3 Getting started Pr oduct overview This A T&T 993 two-line speakerphone with caller ID/call waiting can be used with one or two incoming telephone lines and f eatures a speak erphone for hands-free use. It is hearing-aid compatibl e and can also be used hands-free with a two-band 2.

7 Getting started Glossary Call er ID: Call er iden tificat ion is a subsc riber s ervice avai lable from most l ocal tel ephone compa nies f or a f ee.
8 Getting started Avoid placing the t elephone t oo close to: Communication devices such as: personal comput ers, computer r outers, television sets, V CRs, wireless r outers (wireless br oadband, wi-fi, or 802.11) or cordl ess telephones. Excessiv e heat sources.
9 Getting started Optional spar e batt ery Y ou can purchase a 9V alk aline battery and k eep it in the spare batt ery compartment of the telephone base at all times.
10 Getting started Connect the tel ephone line cor d(s) to the t elephone and the modular wall jack(s). If ther e is a single two-line modular wall jack, use only the black telephone line cor d (4-conductor). Plug one end int o the jack labeled L1 or L1/L2 on the back of the telephone.
11 Getting started Connect the handset to the t elephone. Plug the coiled handset cor d into the handset jack on the left side of the telephone. Plug the other end of the coil ed handset cord into the handset, then hang up. 2. T elephone installation Connect the power adapter .
12 Getting started Data port If you want to connect another devic e (such as a modem or a fax machine) to the wall jack, use the jack labeled D A T A on the telephone. The data port uses line 2 only . NOTES: Use only the power adapter supplied or equivalent with this pr oduct.
13 Getting started W all mounting A wall jack with mounting studs is requir ed for wall mounting. This wall jack with mounting studs may be available f or purchase fr om a hardware st ore or consumer electr onics retailer and ma y require pr ofessional installation.
14 Getting started W all mounting Connect the handset to the t elephone. Plug the coiled handset cor d into the handset jack on the left side of the telephone. Plug the other end of the coil ed handset cord into the handset, then hang up. Connect the tel ephone line cor d(s) to the t elephone and the modular wall jack(s).
15 Getting started Check for a dial t one. Press LINE 1 then lift the handset, or pr ess SPEAKER and listen for a dial tone. Then press LINE 2 and list en for a dial tone. If ther e is no dial tone, see T roubleshooting on page 58. Confirm Lines 1 and 2.
16 Getting started Optional headset Make sur e the headset is firmly plugged into the headset jack under the rubber flap on the right side of the telephone. Ther e is a low pitch (err or) tone if you pr ess HEADSET when the headset is not plugged in. For hands-fr ee telephone conver sations, use any industry standard 2.
17 T elephone operation Menu oper ation Featur e setup, memory programming and a f ew individual featur e operations for this telephone use the menus shown in the screen display . Use the navigation buttons ( , , , , and ENTER ) to begin, end and move through menu operations (f or example, FEA TURE SETUP ).
18 T elephone operation Menu structur e Use the menu to customiz e the feature set tings for your 993 telephone. Pr ess ENTER when the phone is in idle mode to access the menu.
19 T elephone operation T urn auto speak er on or off Choose whether pressing a one-touch k ey while the telephone is on hook automaticall y initiates a speed dial call or displays the speed dial number without dialing.
20 T elephone operation F eatur e setup T urn automatic line selection on or off When t his f eatur e is t urned on and the t elepho ne is o ff hook, it aut omatic ally connec ts t o a pr e-sel ecte d line.
21 T elephone operation F eatur e setup Set pr eferr ed mode Choose the mode (headset or speakerphone) which will be used automatically when dialing a number fr om the directory , speed dial or call history without lifting the handset.
22 T elephone operation Set the time and date If you subscribe to caller ID servic e, the time and date are set automatically with each incoming call. Y ou can set the time and date manually f ollowing these instructions. Press ENTER to begin f eature setup.
23 T elephone operation F eatur e setup T urn screen backlight on or off Press ENTER to begin f eature setup. Press until the screen displays PHONE SETTINGS . Press ENTER . The scr een displays PRIMARY LINE . Press until the screen displays L CD BACKLIGHT and the current setting.
24 T elephone operation F eatur e setup T urn the central offic e voicemail (C OVM) indicator on or off If you subscribe to voic email service with your local telephone company , turn the COVM indicator on t o have the NEW CALL light for that line flashing when there ar e messages waiting.
25 T elephone operation F eatur e setup T urn NEW CALL light off If a NEW CALL light continues to flash when ther e are no messages on that line, you may have r eceived a false signal from your t elephone company . Y ou can turn off the light manually .
26 T elephone operation F eatur e setup Pr ogram home and l ocal ar ea codes Home area code is the ar ea code for your t elephone number . Most users dial the seven digits of a tel ephone number to mak e a call within their own area code and 11 digits outside of their area c ode.

29 T elephone operation F eatur e setup T u rn caller ID with call waiting on or off If you subscribe to combined call er ID with call waiting service from y our local telephone company , activate this featur e in order to see call inf ormation for call waiting calls.
30 T elephone operation Basic oper ation Mak e, answer or end a call Handset T o mak e a call , lift the handset and dial the number. The number appears on screen when dialing. T o answer a call , lift the handset. T o override aut omatic line selection , lift the handset, then press and r elease a LINE button.

32 T elephone operation Basic oper ation Timer When making or answering a call, the timer automatically starts. F or outgoing calls, the timer starts when dialing. The screen displays the elapsed time in minut es and seconds (up to 59:59) and then displays the hour s and minutes up to 10 hours (09:59) be fore starting at 00:00 again.
33 T elephone operation Basic oper ation Redial The last number dialed on this telephone (up t o 24 digits) is stored in r edial memory until another number is dialed. Handset T o dial the same number again, lift the handset, listen for the dial tone, and press (A UTO) REDIAL .
34 T elephone operation Basic oper ation Auto r edial The telephone can automaticall y redial the last outgoing number up to 10 times, until the other telephone rings or you cancel auto r edial. It will activate the speak erphone to mak e auto redial calls.
T elephone operation 35 Options while on calls Hold While on a call, press HOLD . The LINE light f or the call will flash slowly while the call is on hold. Y ou can replace the handset in the cradle without disconnecting the line and the speakerphone or headset is aut omatically disabled.
T elephone operation 36 Options while on calls Mute Mute allows you t o hear the other party, but the other party cannot hear you. T o activa te this fea tur e , press and rel ease MUTE . The MUTE light goes on. T o r eturn t o the conversation , pr ess and release MUTE again.

38 One-touch operation (speed dial) This telephone has 18 one-touch l ocations for storing telephone numbers. Y ou can store up t o 24 digits in each location. The first nine locations can be accessed b y using only the one-touch k eys. T o access the r emaining nine locations, press L OWER and then the one-touch k ey for the desir ed location.
39 One-touch operation (speed dial) Stor e a number in one-touch Press ENTER to ent er the featur e menu. The screen displays ONE T OUCH . Press ENTER . The scr een displays PROGR AM . Press ENTER . The cursor flashes on the scr een. Enter the phone number using the dial pad k eys.
40 One-touch operation (speed dial) Stor e a pause in a one-touch entry Y ou can add a pause while storing a dialing sequenc e which requir es a pause during actual dialing. When entering a pause, press P AUSE . Each pause counts as one digit and appears on the screen as P .
41 One-touch operation (speed dial) Dial a one-touch number If the auto speak er is turned on, numbers will be dialed using the method selected in the Set pr eferr ed mode on page 21. If the pref erred mode is Headset but no headset is connected, the number will be dialed using the speakerphone.

44 This telephone can stor e up to 100 names and tel ephone numbers in the direct ory. Names can be up t o 16 characters and number s can have 24 digits.
