Thank you for buying the Pentax Optio S4 Digital Camera. Please read this manual before usin g the camera in order to get the most out of all the features and functions. Keep this manual safe, as it can be a valuable tool in helping you to understand all the camera' s capabilities.
1 Sufficient attention has been paid to the safety of this product but ple ase pay particular attention to the warnings indicated by the following symbols during use. 12 1 Getting Started Powering the Camera When using the camera for the first time or when the [Battery depleted.] message is displayed, charge the battery. 1 Connect the AC plug cord to the batt ery charger. 2 Plug the AC plug co rd into the power out let.
13 Getting Started 1 Install the battery provided. When us ing the camera for the first time, charge the battery before installing. 1 Slide the battery /card cover in the direction indicated by the arrow and flip the c over open.

15 Getting Started 1 If you intend to use the LCD monitor fo r a lon g time or connect the ca mera to a PC, use of th e AC adapter D-AC8 (optional) is recommended .
16 1 Getting Started Installing the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard This camera uses an SD Memory Card and MultiMediaCard. Captured images are recorded on the SD Memory Card / Mu ltiMedia Card if a card is inserted ( icon on the LCD monitor), or in the Built-in memory if no card is inserte d ( icon on the LCD monitor).
17 Getting Started 1 Data Backup Very occasionally, data stored in the Built-in memory becomes unreadable. As a backup measure, we recommend that you download important data to a PC or store the data in a media other than t he Built-in memory.
18 1 Getting Started Initial Settings If the initial settings screen appe ars when you turn the camera on, follow the procedure below to set the display language, Home Town, DST and current date and time.
19 Getting Started 1 You can choose the city (Home Town) i n which you will use the camera. 1 Press the four-w ay controller ( 45 ) to select the desired city (H ome Town). 2 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ). The screen fo r setting the D.S.T wil l be displayed.

21 Getting Started 1 6 When you have finished the settings , press the OK button when the clock rea ches 00 seconds. The camera is ready to take a picture. When you set date and time excep t the initial set tings, press the OK button again after press ing the OK button when the cloc k reaches 00 seconds to return to capture mode.
22 2 Quick Start Quick Start Taking Still Pictures For the simplest procedure to take still pictures: The flash fires automatically depen din g on the light conditions. 1 Press the power switch. The camera will tu rn on. 2 Confirm the subject and sho oting information on the LCD monitor.
23 2 Quick Start 3 Press the shutter relea se button. The image will be di splayed on the LCD monito r for 1 second (Inst ant Review) and recorded on the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard or the Built-in memory.
24 2 Quick Start Quick Start Playing Back Still Pictures You can display the still picture. 1 Press the Playback but ton after taking a picture. The image take n will be disp layed on th e LCD monitor. Still images can be played back one at a ti me, proceeding either forward or backward.
25 2 Quick Start During this time y ou can erase the image by pressing the i button (The Delete screen will be displayed.), press the four-way controller ( 2 ) to select [Delet e], and then pressing the OK button. Press the Playback button again or press the shutter re lease button hal fway to return to capture mode.
26 2 Quick Start Quick Start How to View the Recorded Images Instead of using the Bui lt-in memory, images taken with this ca mera can be record ed on the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard. You can view the images recorded on the card on th e camera itself, transfer them to your PC and print them out.
27 2 Quick Start Once you have installed the USB driver on your PC, you can view recorded images and edit them on your PC j ust by conne cting the camera to the PC with the USB cable and downloadin g the images. Or you can remove the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard from the camera and transf er the data to your PC using a card reader.

32 3 Common Operations Setting the Menus When you press the MENU button, the menus are displayed on the LCD monitor. You can set functions, save the settings, and change the camera settings on these menus. When you are making settings from a menu, a guide to operation is displayed on the LCD monitor.

36 4 Taking Pictures Taking Pictures Setting the Shooting Functions Capture mode is for taking pictures and Playback mode is for playing back or erasing images.
37 Taking Pictures 4 • Focus Mode 1 Press the q s or z butt on in Capture mode. The focus mode changes each t ime the button is pressed and the setting is display ed on the LCD monitor. The camera is ready to take the pict ure in the set focus mode.

42 Taking Pictures 4 A B F GDE You can choose the image compression rate. The more stars, the clearer the quality and the larger the volume. The recorded pixel s setting also chang es the picture volume. 1 Select [Quality Level] on the [ A Rec. Mode] menu.

52 Taking Pictures 4 A B F GDE You can take picture s that are intentional ly over-exposed or under- exposed. 1 Select [EV Compensation] on the [ A Rec. Mode] menu. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select the EV sett ing in the range of –2.0 EV to +2.
53 4 Taking Pictures Taking Pictures In Program mode ( A ), the camera automatically sets the shutter speed and aperture for taking sti ll pictures . However, you can sel ect other functions such as the flash m ode or continuos shooting mode. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture Mode.
54 Taking Pictures 4 You can select the Picture mode according to the shooting scene. • Picture Mode There are nine available modes in Picture mode. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture Mode. The virtual mod e dial appears. 2 Use the four-way controlle r ( 45 ) to display t he Pictur e mode ( H ) at the top of the dial.
55 Taking Pictures 4 You can choose settings appropri ate for taking pictures of dark scenes, such as nightscapes. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode. The virtual mod e dial appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to display the Night- scene mode ( B ) at the top of the dial.
56 Taking Pictures 4 This mode enables you to take moving images and sound. The maximum length of one recording (1 set) is approximately 60 seconds. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode. The virtual mod e dial appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to display the Mo vie Picture mode ( C ) at the top of the dial.
57 Taking Pictures 4 If you keep the shutter release button pressed for more th an one second, pictures will be taken for as long as you keep the button pressed. Shooting stops when you take a finger off from the shutter release button. Keeping the shutter release b utton pressed Playing Back Movie Pictures 1 p.
58 Taking Pictures 4 You can take a numb er of images and jo in them together to form a panorama picture. The pan orama software provided with the camera and a computer that supports Windows are necessary for joini ng the images. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode.
59 Taking Pictures 4 5 Take the first picture. Press the shutter rele ase button to take the first image. The right edge of the image is displayed in transparent form on the left of the LCD monitor. 6 Move the camera to the right and take the secon d picture.
60 Taking Pictures 4 You can take pictures using digital filters. The filters consist of color filters such as red, blue and green, a nd a slim filter that produces a slim effect. • Color Filters Eight color fil ters are provi ded: blac k-and-white, sepia, red, pink, viole t, blue, green and yellow .
61 Taking Pictures 4 When you select the slim filter in Digi tal Filter Mode, the slimness setting screen is displayed. 1 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to set the slimness. Decreases slimness. Increases slimness. 2 Press the OK button. The camera returns to digi tal filter mode.
62 Taking Pictures 4 In User mode, you can take pictures using the functions and settings registered in advance in User mode. 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ) in Capture mode. The virtual mod e dial appears. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to display the User mode ( E ) at the top of the dial .
63 Taking Pictures 4 You can take 3D pictu res using the LCD monitor and view them by the parallel method or cro ss method (p.65). If you print out the 3D pictures and look at them through the 3D im age viewer provided, the image will appear in three dimensio ns.

65 Taking Pictures 4 • Viewing 3D pictur es by the parallel meth od and cross method As our eyes are positioned about 6 - 7 cm apart, there is a very slight deviation between what we see with our rig ht eye and what we see with our left eye. The difference is proce ssed by our brain to prod uce a three- dimensional image.
66 Taking Pictures 4 • How to view 3D pictures using the 3D image viewe r Print out the pictures so that they are about 11cm or 12cm wide and place the divider of the 3D image viewer in the middle of the two.

70 Taking Pictures 4 A B C F GDE You can take pictures using the remote control F (optional). 1 Press the four-way contr oller ( 2 ) in Capture mode to dis play ( i ) on the LCD monitor. The self-timer lamp will bli nk and the camera is ready to take pictures.
71 Taking Pictures 4 A B C F GDE You can use the zoom to take pictures in Tele or Wide mode. 1 Press the Zoom b utton in Capture mode. x : makes the subj ect larger w : makes the subj ect smaller When the digita l zoom functi on is disable d, you can take pi ctures at up t o 3 times magnification usi ng the optical zoom.
72 Taking Pictures 4 1 Press the MENU button in Capture mode. The [ A Rec. Mode] menu will be displayed . 2 Press the four-w ay controller ( 23 ) to select [Digital Zoom]. 3 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select [On]. 4 Press the OK button. The camera is ready to take a picture.
73 Taking Pictures 4 C This mode lets you take movie pictures at a delayed frame rate so that when you play the movie back, the action ap pears speeded u p. This function is useful for recording a blooming flowers, etc. 1 Press the MENU button in Movie Pic ture mode.
74 4 Taking Pictures Saving the Settings (Memory) You can choose whether you wan t the set values to be saved when th e camera is turned off. If you select O [On], the setti ngs will be saved in the status they were in immediatel y b efore the came ra was turned off.

76 5 Recording and Play back Recording and Playback Recording Sound (Voi ce Recorder Mode) You can record sound. The recordable time is displayed on the LCD monitor accordi ng to how much space is av ailable on the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard. 1 Press the power switch fo r more than 2 seconds.
77 5 Recording and Play back Playing Back Sound You can play back the recording you made in Voice Recorde r Mode. 1 Enter the Voice Reco rder Mode and pres s the Playback button. 2 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select the recording y ou want to play back.
78 5 Recording and Play back Adding a Voice Memo You can add a voice memo to a captured image. 1 Enter the playback mode and choose the image t o which you want to add a voice me mo with the four-way controller ( 45 ). The voice memo screen will be displayed on the LCD monitor while the ima ge is displayed.
79 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Playback/Erasing/Editing Playing Back Images See “Playing Back Images” (p.24), or “Playing Back Previous or Next Images” (p.24). You can display images magni fied up to a maximum of 4 times. A guide to operation is di splayed on the LCD mon itor during magnifi cation.
80 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can play back Movi e pictures. A gui de to operation i s displayed on the LCD monitor during playback. You can play b ack the recording you made in Voice Recorder mode at the same time. 1 Enter the Playback mode and choose the movie picture you want to play bac k with the four-way co ntroller ( 45 ).
81 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Shooting informatio n can be displayed on the LCD mo nitor. Pressing the Display button switches the informatio n displayed.
82 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can display n ine images at the same time. 1 Enter the Playback mode and choose an image with the four-way controller ( 45 ). 2 Press w / f on the Zoom button f / y . Nine images wi ll be displaye d with the selected image in the cen ter.
83 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can play back all the images on the SD Memory Card/ MultiMediaCard continuously. 1 Enter the Playback mode and cho ose the image with which to start the slideshow with the four-wa y controller ( 45 ). 2 Press the MENU button.
84 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Erasing Images 1 Enter the P layback mode and choose the image or voice memo you want to erase with th e four-way controller ( 45 ). 2 Press the i button. The Delete screen will be displaye d. 3 Select [Delete] with the four- way controller ( 2 ).
85 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing If an image has a voice memo, you can erase the voice memo without erasing the image. 1 Enter the Playback mode and cho ose the image with the voice memo that you want to erase with the four- way controller ( 45 ). 2 Press the i button.
86 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can erase all the images and soun d at once. 1 Enter the Playback mode and press th e i button twice. The Delete Al l screen will b e displayed. 2 Select [Delete All] with the four-way controller ( 2 ). 3 Press the OK button.
87 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can protect imag es/sound fr om being a ccidentally erased. 1 Enter the Playbac k mode and choos e the image/sound you want to protect with the four -way controller ( 45 ). 2 Press the Z button. The Protect screen wil l be displayed.
88 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Viewing Images on a TV By using th e AV cable, you can captur e and play back images on a TV or other equipme nt with a video IN jack. Make sure that both the TV and the camera are turned off before connecting the cable. 1 Open th e terminal co ver and con nect the AV cable.
89 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Setting the Printing Service (DPOF) You can print the images on the SD Memory Card / MultiMediaCard using a DPOF (Digital Print Ord er Format) compatible p rinter or at a printing service. Set the following items for each image.
90 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing 3 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select the number of prints, then press the fo ur-way controller ( 3 ). The frame will move to [Date] . 4 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select whether to inse rt the date or not.
91 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing 1 Enter the Playback mode and press the four-way controller ( 2 ). 2 Press the Display but ton. 3 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to select the number of prints. You can print up to 99 copi es. 4 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ).
92 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Editing Images By changing the size and quality of a selected image, you can make the file smaller than the original. After chang ing the size, the image can be saved as a new image or written over the original image. 1 Press the MENU button.
93 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing 7 Press the four- way controller ( 45 ) to selec t [Recorded pixels]. 8 Press the four-way contr oller ( 3 ). The select frame moves t o [Quality Level]. 9 Press the four-w ay controller ( 45 ) to select [Quality Level]. 10 Press the OK button.
94 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing You can trim part of a picture and save it as a separate image. 1 Press the MENU button. 2 Press the four-way contr oller ( 5 ). The [ Q Pl ayback] menu will be display ed. 3 Press the four-way contr oller ( 23 ) to select [Trimming].
95 6 Playback/Erasing/Editing Copying Files You can copy files from th e Built-i n memory to the SD Memory Card/ MultiMediaCard and vice versa. When files are copied from the Built-in memory to the card, all the fil es are copied at once.
96 7 Settings Settings Camera Settings Formatting will delete all the data o n the SD Memory Card/ MultiMediaCard if you are using a card, and al l the data in the Built-in memory if there is no card inserted. 1 Select [Format] on the [ B Set-up] menu.
97 7 Settings You can change the volume of the playback and operation sound s ([Start-up Sound], [Shutter Sound], [Key Operation Sound], [Focus Sound] and [Self-timer Sound]). You can also change the type of each sound. 1 Select [Playback Volume] on the Set -up menu.
98 7 Settings You can display an i mage recorded with th e camera as the welcome screen when the camera is turned on. 1 Select [Start-up Screen] on the [ B Set-up] menu. 2 Press the four-way contr oller ( 5 ). 3 Press the Display but ton. 4 Use the four-way controller ( 45 ) to choose the image you want to display as the start-u p screen.
