8 2 Crea ting your netw ork P ositioning your rout er F or the best wireless signal transmission between the wireless router and the network devices c onnec ted to it, ensur e that you: • Place the wir eless router in a cen tralized area for a maximum wireless co verage f or the net work devices .

13 3. F rom the Local Area Network (LAN) Settings screen, untick U se a proxy server for y our LAN . 4. Click OK when done. MA C OS 1. 16 3 C onguring via the web GUI Logging int o the web GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Rout er comes with an intuitive w eb graphics user interface (GUI) that allows y ou to easily congure its various featur es through a web brow ser such as I nternet Explorer , F iref ox, Safari, or Google Chrome.
17 3. The wireless router’ s web GUI launches. Use the web GUI to configure v ar ious settings. Setting up the Internet connection NO TE : When setting the Internet connection for the first time , press the Reset button on your wir eless router to r eset it to its factor y default settings.
18 2. The wireless router automa tically detects if your ISP connection type is D ynamic IP , PPP oE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnection t ype. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information about your Internet connection type from your ISP .
19 NO TES : • The auto-detection of your ISP connection type takes place when you configure the wir eless router for the first time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings. • If QIS failed to detect your Internet connection type, click Skip to manual setting and manually configure y our connec tion settings.

21 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized acc ess, you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. Key in 192.168.1.1 on your web bro wser . 2. On the login screen, key in the default user name ( admin ) and password ( admin ), then click OK .
22 5GHz security settings 4. On the Wireless name (SSID) field , k ey in a unique name f or your wireless netw ork. 5. Fr om the Authentica tion Method and WP A Encr yption dropdown lists , select the authentication and encr yption methods for y our wireless network.
23 Managing your netw ork clients T o manage your network clients: 1. Launch the wireless router ’ s web GUI. 2. On the Network Map screen, selec t the Client S tatus icon to display the inf ormation about your network clients .
24 NO TE: T o use this feature , you need to plug a USB storage device , such as a USB hard disk or USB flash drive , to the USB 2.0 por t on the rear panel of y our wireless router . Ensure that the USB storage device is f ormatted and par titioned properly .
25 NO TES : • F or more details , ref er to the section U sing the Networ k Place (Samba) Share service and Using the FTP Share service in this user manual. • On USB External HDD/Flash disk: • The wireless router works with most USB HDDs/F lash disks (up to 2TB size) and supports read-write access for F A T16, F A T32, EX T2, EXT3, and NTFS.
26 Using the T raffic Manager Managing QoS (Quality of S ervice) Bandwidth The Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows y ou to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net work tr affic. T o set up the band width priority: 1. Launch the wireless router ’ s web GUI.
27 Monitoring T raffic The traffic monitor function allows y ou to assess the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet , LAN, W ired , WLAN (2.4GHz or 5GHz) connections. Using the USB A pplic ation The USB Application function provides AiDisk , Ser vers C enter , Network P rinter Server , 3G/4G , Download Master , and Media Ser v er submenus.
28 Using AiDisk f or Files Sharing AiDisk allows you t o share files in the USB disk through the Internet. NO TE: Before using AiDisk, ensure that y ou hav e inser ted a USB disk into the USB port of your wireless router . T o use AiDisk: 1. Click USB Application > AiDisk .
29 3. Selec t the access rights that y ou want to assign to the clien ts accessing your shar ed data. 4. Create your domain name via the ASUS DDNS services, selec t I will use the service and accept the T erms of service and key in your domain name . When done, click Next .
30 5. Click Finish to finish the setup . 6. T o access the FTP site that you creat ed , launch a web bro wser or a third-part y FTP client utility and key in the ftp link ( ftp://<domain name> ) you have pr eviously created.
31 Using the Servers C enter ser vice Y our wireless router allo ws UPnP (U niversal Plug and Pla y) multimedia devices , such as PS3 and XBox 360, to access multimedia files from the USB disk connected to y our wireless router . NO TE : Before using the UP nP Media S erver function, install a wireless adapter on your UP nP device.
32 Using the Netw ork Place (Samba) Share service Network Place (Samba) Share allo ws you to set the account and permission for samba service. T o use S amba share: 1. Click USB Application > Ser v ers Center > Netw ork place (Samba) Share tab .
33 Using the FTP Shar e ser vice Sharing files via the FTP server The ASUS Wireless Router enables you t o share files from y our USB storage device via the FTP server with computers in LAN or through the Internet.
34 4. Fr om the list of files/folders , select the type of access rights that you want t o assign for specific files/folders: • R/W : Selec t this option to assign read/writ e access for a specific file/folder . • W : Selec t this option to assign write only acc ess for a specific file/folder .
35 Using the Miscellaneous setting Miscellaneous setting allows you to c onfigure other settings for the USB disk, including maximum login user , device name , work group and language on FTP server . T o use miscellaneous setting: 1. Click USB Application > Ser v ers Center > Miscellaneous setting tab .
36 C onfiguring the Adv anced settings Adv anced Setting allows you to configure the adv anced features of your wireless r outer . Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou may enable the DHCP Server function in your wireless router so your network clients can automa tic ally obtain IP addresses from your wir eless router .
37 3. In the Enable the DHCP Ser ver? field , tick Y es . 4. In the IP Pool Starting Address field , key in the star ting IP address. 5. In the IP Pool Ending A ddress field , k ey in the ending IP address.
38 T o up grade the firmw are: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen. 2. Under the Administra tion menu, click Firmware U pgrade . 3. In the New Firmw are File field , click Browse to locate the new firmware in your c omputer .
39 Restoring/Saving/U ploading settings T o restore/sav e/upload the settings: 1. Click Adv anced Setting from the navigation menu at the left side of your screen.
40 Setting up your networ k printer Use the Network P r inter Setup utility to set up a USB printer on your wireless r outer and allow network clients t o access the USB printer . NO TES : • T o check if your USB printer is compatible with your ASUS wireless router , refer to the Plug-n-Shar e Disk Suppor t List at http://ev ent.
41 4. Follo w the onscreen instruc tions to set up y our hardware , then click Next . 3. Unzip the downloaded file and click the Printer ic on to run the network printer setup program.
42 5. W ait for a f ew minutes for the initial setup to finish. Click Ne xt . 6. Click Finish to c omplete the installation..
43 8. After the printer ’ s driver installation is completed , network clients can now use the printer . 7. Follo w the Windo ws ® OS instructions to install the printer driver .
44 4 U sing the utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled suppor t CD . • If Autorun is disabled , run setup.
45 F irmware Restor ation F ir mware Rest oration is used on an ASUS Wireless Router that failed during its firmware upgrading process . I t uploads the firmware that you specify . The process takes about three to f our minutes. T o launch the rescue mode and use the Firm ware Restoration utility: 1.
46 NO TE : This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router . Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web in ter face . Refer to Chapter 3: C onfiguring via the web GUI f or more details. 5. Specify a firmware file, then click Upload .
47 5 T roubleshooting NO TE : If you encoun ter problems that are not men tioned in this chapter , contact the ASUS T echnical Supp ort. T roubleshooting I cannot access a w eb brow ser for conguring the r outer . • Delete the cookies and files in your web brow ser .
48 Cannot find the rout er: • P ress the Reset button at the rear panel f or more than five seconds. • Check the setting in the wireless adapt er such as SSID and encr yption settings. Cannot ac cess the Internet via wir eless L AN adapter . • Move the rout er closer to the wireless client.
49 If the ADSL “LINK” light blinks continuously or sta ys o , Internet acc ess is not possible - the Router is unable to establish a connection with the ADSL network. • Ensure that all your cables ar e all properly connec ted . • Disconnect the power cord fr om the ADSL or cable modem, wait a few minut es, then reconnect the cord.
50 ASUS DDNS Ser vice RT-N56U suppor ts the ASUS DDNS ser vice . W hen exchanging devices at the service center , if you hav e registered the ASUS DDNS ser vice and want t o k eep the original domain name , data transf er is a must. V isit your local service center f or more information.
51 3. I ha ve register ed a domain name before and it has been working well un til my friends told me that the y could not access m y domain name. Check the following: 1. The internet is working well. 2. The DNS ser ver is w ork ing well. 3. The last time you updat ed the domain name.
