8 2 Crea ting y our netw ork P ositioning y our rout er F or the best wireless signal transmission betw een the wireless router and the network devic es connected to it, ensure that you: • Place the wireless r outer in a centr alized area f or a maximum wireless co verage f or the network devices.
9 Wha t you need T o set up your network, you need one or two computers that meet the following sy stem requiremen ts: • Ethernet RJ-45 (LAN) por t (10Base-T/100Base-T X/ 1000BaseT X) • IEEE 802.
10 Setting up your wireless r outer Wired c onnection IMPORT ANT! • Use wired connection in setting up your wireless r outer to av oid possible setup problems due to wireless uncertainty . • Before setting up y our ASUS wireless router , do the following: • If you are replacing an existing r outer , disconnect it from your network.
11 2. Using the bundled network cable, connect your computer to your wireless r outer ’ s LAN por t. IMPORT ANT! Ensure that the LAN LED is blinking. 3 Using another network cable , connect your modem to your wireless router’ s W AN por t. 4. Inser t your modem ’ s AC adapter to the DC-IN port and plug it to a pow er outlet.
12 NO TES: • F or details on connecting to a wireless network, refer to the WLAN adapter ’ s user manual. • T o set up the security settings for your network, refer to the section Setting up the wireless security settings in this user manual.
13 Before y ou proc eed A. Disable the pro xy ser ver , if enabled. Windo ws ® 7 1. Click Start > Internet Explorer to launch the brow ser . 2. Click T ools > Internet options > C onnections tab > L AN settings .
14 MA C OS 1. F rom your Safari browser , click S afari > Pref erences > Adv anced > C hange Settings... 2. F rom the Network screen, deselect FTP Pro x y and W eb Pro xy (HT TP) . 3. Cllick Apply Now when done. NO TE: Refer to y our browser's help f eature f or details on disabling the proxy server .
15 3. T o obtain the IPv4 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IP address automatically . T o obtain the IPv6 IP settings automatically , tick Obtain an IPv6 address automatically . 4. Click OK when done. MA C OS 1. Click the Apple icon located on the top left of your screen.
16 C. Disable the dial-up c onnection, if enabled . Windo ws ® 7 1. Click Start > Internet Explorer to launch the brow ser . 2. Click T ools > Internet options > C onnections tab. 3. Tick Nev er dial a connection . 4. Click OK when done. NO TE: Refer to y our browser's help f eature f or details on disabling the dial-up connection.
17 3 C onfiguring via the web GUI Logging int o the web GUI Y our ASUS Wireless Router comes with an in tuitive web gr aphics user interface (GUI) that allows you to easily c onfigure its various featur es through a web bro wser such as Internet Explorer , Firef o x, Safari, or G oogle Chrome.
18 3. The wireless router ’ s web GUI launches. Use the web GUI t o configure v arious settings. Setting up the Internet connection NO TE : When setting the Internet connection for the first time , press the Reset button on your wir eless router to r eset it to its factor y default settings.
19 2. The wireless router automatically det ects if your ISP connection type is D ynamic IP , PPPoE , PPTP , L2TP , and Static IP . Key in the necessary information for your ISP c onnection t ype. IMPORT ANT ! Obtain the necessary information about your Internet connection type from your ISP .
20 NO TES : • The auto-detection of your ISP connection type takes place when you configure the wir eless router f or the first time or when your wireless rout er is reset to its default settings. • If QIS failed to detect your Internet connection type, click Skip to manual setting and manually configure y our connection settings.
21 4. Y our Internet and wireless settings are displa yed . Click Ne xt to continue . 5. Read the wireless network connection tutorial. When done, click Finish .
22 Setting up the wireless security settings T o protect your wireless network from unauthorized access , you need to configure its security settings. T o set up the wireless security settings: 1. Key in 192.168.1.1 on your web browser . 2. On the login screen, key in the default user name ( admin ) and password ( admin ), then click OK .
23 5GHz security settings 4. On the Wireless name (SSID) field , key in a unique name for your wireless netw ork. 5. From the Security Le vel dr opdown list, select the encr yption method for y our wireless network. IMPORT ANT ! The IEEE 802.11n/ac standar d prohibits using High Throughput with WEP or WP A-TKIP as the unicast cipher .
24 Managing your netw ork clients T o manage your netw ork clients: 1. Launch the wireless router ’ s web GUI. 2. On the Network M ap screen, select the Client Status icon to display the inf ormation about your network clients .
25 NO TE: T o use this featur e, you need to plug a USB stor age device , such as a USB hard disk or USB flash drive, to the USB 3.0/2.0 por t on the rear panel of your wireless r outer . Ensure that the USB storage device is f ormatted and partitioned properly .

27 Crea ting your Guest Netw ork The Guest Network pro vides Internet connectivity for temporary visitors without pro viding access to your priv ate netw ork. T o create y our guest networ k: 1. Launch the wireless router ’ s web GUI. 2. On the Guest Net work screen, click Creat e to create a netw ork for y our visitors.
28 Using the T raffic Manager Managing QoS (Quality of S er vice) Bandwidth The Quality of Ser vice (QoS) allows you to set the bandwidth priority and manage the net work traffic. T o set up the bandwidth priority: 1. Launch the wireless router ’ s web GUI.
29 Monitoring T raffic The traffic monitor function allows y ou to assess the bandwidth usage and speed of your Internet , LAN, Wired , WLAN (2.4GHz or 5GHz) connections. Using the USB Extension The USB Extension function provides AiDisk , Ser vers C enter , Network P rinter Server and Download Master submenus.
30 Using AiDisk f or F iles Sharing AiDisk allows you t o share files in the USB disk through the Internet. NO TE: Before using AiDisk, ensure that you ha ve inserted a USB disk into the USB port of your wireless router . T o use AiDisk: 1. Click the AiDisk icon in USB Extension.
31 3. S elect the access rights that you want to assign t o the clients accessing your shar ed data. 4. Create your domain name via the ASUS DDNS services, select I will use the service and accept the T erms of ser vice and key in your domain name . When done , click Next .
32 5. Click Finish to finish the setup . 6. T o access the FTP site that you cr eated , launch a web bro wser or a third-part y FTP client utility and key in the f tp link ( ftp://<domain name> ) you have pr eviously created .
33 Using the Servers C enter service Y our wireless router allows UP nP (Universal Plug and Play) multimedia devices , such as PS3 and XBox 360, to access multimedia files from the USB disk connected to y our wireless router . NO TE : Before using the UPnP Media Server function, install a wireless adapter on your UP nP device.
34 Using the Netw ork Place (Samba) Shar e ser vice Network Place (Samba) Share allo ws you to set the acc ount and permission for samba service. T o use Samba share: 1. Click the Network place (Samba) Share tab in the Servers Cent er of USB Extension.
35 Using the FTP Shar e service Sharing files via the FTP server The ASUS Wireless Router enables you to share files fr om your USB storage device via the FTP server with computers in LAN or through the Internet.

From the list of files/f olders, selec t the t ype of access rights that you want t o assign for specific files/f olders: • R/W : Selec t this option to assign read/write access f or a specific file/folder . • W : Selec t this option to assign write only access for a specific file/folder .
37 Using the Miscellaneous setting Miscellaneous setting allows you to c onfigure other settings for the USB disk, including maximum login user , device name, work group and language on FTP server . T o use miscellaneous setting: 1. Click the Miscellaneous setting tab in the Ser vers Center of USB Extension.
38 C onfiguring the A dv anced settings Adv anced Setting allows y ou to configure the adv anced f eatures of your wireless r outer . Setting up the DHCP Ser ver Y ou may enable the DHCP Ser ver function in your wireless r outer so your network clients can automa tically obtain IP addresses from your wir eless router .
39 3. In the Enable the DHCP S er ver? field , tick Y es . 4. In the IP Pool Starting Address field , key in the star ting IP address. 5. In the IP Pool Ending Addr ess field , key in the ending IP address.
40 T o upgrade the firmwar e: 1. Click Advanc ed Setting from the navigation menu a t the left side of your screen. 2. Under the Administration menu , click Firmw are Upgr ade . 3. In the New Firmwar e F ile field , click Browse to loca te the new firmware in your c omputer .
41 Restoring/Saving/U ploading settings T o restore/sa ve/upload the settings: 1. Click Advanc ed Setting from the navigation menu a t the left side of your screen.
42 Setting up your networ k printer Use the Network P rinter Setup utility to set up a USB printer on your wireless r outer and allow network clients t o access the USB printer . NO TES : • T o check if your USB printer is c ompatible with your ASUS wireless router , refer to the P r inter Support List at http://ev ent .
43 4. Follow the onscr een instructions to set up your hardwar e, then click Next . USB LAN 3. Unzip the downloaded file and click the Printer icon t o run the network printer setup program.
44 5. Wait f or a few minut es for the initial setup to finish. Click Next . 6. Click Finish to complet e the installation. RT -AC56U.
45 8. After the printer ’ s driver installation is complet ed , network clients can now use the printer . 7. Follow the Windows ® OS instructions to install the printer driver .
46 4 U sing the utilities NO TES: • Install the wireless router's utilities fr om the bundled suppor t CD . • If Autorun is disabled , run setup .
47 F irmwar e Restor ation F irmware Restora tion is used on an ASUS Wireless Router tha t failed during its firmware upgrading process . It uploads the firmware that you specify . The process takes about three t o four minutes. T olaunchtherescuemodeandusetheFirmware Restoration utility: 1.
48 NO TE : This is not a firmware upgrade utility and cannot be used on a working ASUS Wireless Router . Normal firmware upgrades must be done through the web in ter face. Refer to Chapter 3: Configuring via the w eb GUI for more details . 5. Specify a fir mware file , then click Upload .

50 Cannot find the rout er: • Pr ess the Reset button at the rear panel f or more than five seconds. • Check the setting in the wireless adapter such as SSID and encr yption settings. CannotaccesstheInternetviawirelessLANadapter .

52 ASUS DDNS Ser vice RT-AC56R supports the ASUS DDNS ser vice. When ex changing devices at the service center , if you ha ve regist ered the ASUS DDNS ser vice and want to keep the original domain name , data transf er is a must. Visit your local ser vice center f or more information.
53 3. I hav e registered a domain name before and it has been working well un til my fr iends told me that the y could not access m y domain name . Check the following: 1. The in ternet is working well. 2. The DNS server is working well. 3. The last time y ou updated the domain name .
