- 10 - Prepar ation Insert the battery into t he camera to c harge it. 1 Slide the r elease lever i n the direction of the arrow and open the card/ battery door . • Always u se genuin e Panasonic batterie s. • If you use oth er batteries, we ca nnot guarantee the quality of this product.
- 11 - Prepar ation • Charge the ba tter y in areas with a n ambient temperatu r e, between 10 o C and 30 o C (50 o F and 86 o F ) (sa me as the battery tem p erature), is recom mended.
- 12 - Prepar ation (Charging from a computer) Connect the computer and this camer a with the USB connect ion cable (supplied). • Charging may not be possible dependin g on computer specific ations. • If the computer enter s a suspended state while chargi ng t he battery , charging will stop.
- 13 - Prepar ation • Do not leave any metal ite ms (such as clip s) near the cont act areas of the po wer plug. Otherwise, a fire and/or electri c shocks may b e caused by short-cir cuiting or the resulting heat genera ted.

- 16 - Prepar ation Inserting and Removing t he Card (optional) • Che ck th at this un it is tur n ed off. • We rec ommend using a Panasonic c ard.
- 17 - Prepar ation About the Built-in Memory/ the Card • Y ou can copy th e recorded picture s to a card. (P97) • Memory size: Approx. 90 MB • The access time for th e built-in memory may be longe r than the a ccess time for a card. The following cards, which conform to the SD video standard, can be used with this unit.
- 18 - Prepar ation • During acce ss ( image writing, r eading and deleti ng, formatting etc. ), do not turn thi s unit off, remove the ba ttery , card or disconnect the AC adaptor (supplied). Furtherm ore, do not subject the cam era to vibration, i mpact or st atic electricity .
- 19 - Prepar ation ∫ About the displ ay of the numb er of recordable pictures an d available recording t ime ∫ Number of recordable pictures • [ i 99999 ] is displayed if there are more t han 100,000 pictur es remaining.
- 20 - Prepar ation Setting Date/Time (Clock Set) • The clock is not set when the camera is shipped. 1 Press came ra [ON/OFF] button. • If the lang uage select screen is not displa yed, proceed t o st ep 4 . 2 Press [MENU/SET]. 3 Press 3 / 4 to s elect the language, and press [MENU/SET].
- 21 - Prepar ation Select [Clock Set] in the [Rec] or [Setup] men u, and press [ME NU/SE T]. (P37) • The clock can be reset as shown in steps 5 and 6 . • The clock setting i s maintained for 3 months us ing the built-in clock battery even w ithout the battery .
- 22 - Prepar ation Tip s for taking good pictures Hold the camera gently w ith both hands, k eep your arms still at your s ide and st and with yo ur feet slightly apar t. • T o pr event dropping, be sure to atta ch the supplied strap and fit it to your wrist.
- 23 - Basic Selecting the Recording Mode ∫ List of Recording M odes • When the mode has been switched from Playbac k Mode to Recording Mode, the pr eviously set Recording Mode will be set. 1 Press [MO DE]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the Recording Mode.
- 24 - Basic T aking pictures using the automa tic function (Intelligent Auto Mode) Recording Mode: The camera will set the m ost appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recommend th is mode for beginners or those who want to leave the s ettings to the camera and take pictures easily .
- 25 - Basic When the camera identifies the optimum s cene, the icon of the scene concerned is displayed in blue for 2 se conds, after which its color c hanges to the usual red. When takin g pictu res • [ ¦ ] is set if none of the scenes are ap plic able, and the st andard setti ngs are set.

- 27 - Basic T aking pictures with your favorite settings (Normal Picture Mode) Recording Mode: The camera automatically sets the shutter speed and the aperture value according to t he brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures wit h greater freedom by changing various settings in the [Rec] menu.
- 28 - Basic Focusing Aim the AF area at the subject, and then press the shutter b utton halfway . • The AF area may be disp layed larger for cert ain zoom magnificat ions and in dark places. ∫ About focus range The focus range is displayed wh en operating the zoom.
- 29 - Basic ∫ When the su bject is not i n focus (such as when it i s not in the center of the composition of the picture you want to take) 1 Aim the AF area at the su bject, and press the shutter button half way to fix the focus and exposure. 2 Press and hold the shutter button half way while moving the camera as you compo se the pict ure.

- 36 - Basic Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictu res cannot be recovered. • Pictures on t he bui lt-in memory or the c ard that are being playe d back will be deleted. • Pictures th at are not in the DCF s tandard or th ose that are prot ected cannot be deleted.
- 37 - Basic Setting the Menu The camera comes with menus that allow you to choose the settings for taking pictures and playing them back jus t as you like and menus that enable you to have m ore fun with the camera and us e it more eas ily .
- 38 - Basic ∫ Close the menu Press [ ] until the screen returns to th e recording/playback screen or press the shutter button half-w ay . • There a re functio ns that cannot be s et or used depending on the mo des or menu settings being used on the camer a due to the specifi cations.

- 40 - Basic • When you conn ec t the c amera t o a TV , the v olu me of t he TV s peak ers do es not chang e. Also, when connected , no sound is outp ut from the camera speak ers. • Some subjec t s may appear dif ferently fr om actuality on the LC D monito r .
- 41 - Basic • [Auto Po we r Off] is set to [5MI N.] in th e Intellige nt Auto Mod e. • [Auto Po w e r Off] does not w ork i n the fo l l owin g case s.
- 42 - Basic • This will wo rk when th e A V cable (optional) is connected. ¢ P AL video out is not availa ble on the version DMC- SZ3P sold in the U.S. and th e version DMC-SZ3PC sold i n Canada. • Refer to P32 for informatio n about how to play back pic tu res.
- 43 - Basic • Do not tu rn th e ca m era off duri n g fo r mat ti n g. • If a card has bee n inserted, only the c ard is formatted. T o format the built -in memo ry , remove the car d. • If the ca rd has been formatted on a PC or other equipment, format it on the camera again.
- 44 - Recording About the LCD Monitor Press 4 to change . 1 LCD monitor • During moti on pic ture playback, p anorama playback or a slideshow , you can only select “Normal Display E ” or “No Display G ”.
- 45 - Recording ∫ Recording guidelin e This is used as a reference of compositi on, such as balance, while taking a pictur e. • In the follo wing c ases, the guidelines are not displayed: – Pan.
- 46 - Recording Using the Zoom Appl ica ble m odes : Y ou can zoom in to make people and objects appear closer or zoom out to record landscapes in wide angle. ∫ Screen display Example of display when Extended Opt ical Zoom (EZ), Intelligent Zoom and Digital Zoom are used together .
- 47 - Recording This function works when any of the pict ure sizes (P67) indicated with is selected. Y ou can zoom in further than you can with t he Optica l Zoom without deteriorat ing the image quality . Maximum magnification: 22.5 k (This includes th e optical zoom magnifi cation.
- 48 - Recording T aking Pictures Using the Built-in Flash Appl ica ble m odes : Set the flash to match the recording. 1 Press 1 [ ‰ ]. A Flas h Do not cover it with your fingers or other objects.

- 53 - Recording Compensating th e Exposure Appl ica ble m odes : Use this function when you cannot achieve appr opriat e exposure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. 1 Press 3 [ È ] to displa y [Exposure]. • EV is an abbrevi at ion of [Exposur e V alue], a unit indic ating the amount of exposure.
- 54 - Recording T aking Pictures with different ima ge effects (Creative Control Mode) Recording Mode: This mode records with additional image effects. Y ou can set the effects to add by selecting example images a nd checking them on the sc reen. 1 Press [MO DE].
- 55 - Recording ¢ These pic tures are e xamples t o show the e ffect. This effect emphasizes the color t o mak e a pop art picture. This effect gives a faded image. This effect adds a bright, airy and soft feel to the overall im age. This effect adds a dark and relaxing feel to the overall i mage and enhances bright parts.
- 56 - Recording This ef fect creates a sepia ima ge. This effect gi v es a higher contrast to create an impressive black and white picture. This effect gi v es your photo a dramatic contrast look. This effect produces the optimum brightness for b oth dark and b right part s.
- 57 - Recording This effect gi v es your photo a dramatic color look. This effect reduces peripheral brightness to give th e impression of a toy camera.

- 59 - Recording T aking panorama pictures (Panorama Shot Mod e) Recording Mode: Pictures are recorded continuously while moving the camera horizontally or vertically , and are combined to m ake a single panorama p icture. 1 Press [MO DE]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select [Pano rama Shot], and the n press [MENU/SET].
- 60 - Recording 7 Press th e shutter button fully and record a picture while mo ving the camera in a small circle in the direction sele cted in St ep 3 . 8 Press th e shutter button onc e again to end the still picture recording. • Recording can also be ende d by keeping the camera still while recording.
- 61 - Recording • The zoom posit ion is fixed to Wide. • The focus , white balance, and expo sure are fixed at the optimum values fo r th e first pictu re. As a result, if t he focus or b rightness chan ges substan tia lly during rec ordin g, the entire panorama picture may not be record ed at the s uitable focus or brightness.
- 62 - Recording T aking pictures that match the sc ene being recorded (Scene Mode) Recording Mode: When you se lect a Scene Mod e to match t he subject and recording situation, the ca mera sets the optimal exposure and hue to obtain the desired picture.
- 63 - Recording When taking pictures of people outdoors during the daytime, this mode allows you to im prove the appearance and make their skin tones look healthier . ∫ T echnique for Portrait Mode T o mak e this mode more effective: 1 Rotate the zoom lever as far as possible to T ele.
- 64 - Recording Setting for when you want to t ake pictures of sports scenes or other fast-moving events. • Shutter spee d may slow down up to 1 secon d. • This mode is suit able for tak i n g pictures of sub jects at dist ances of 5 m (16 feet) or more.
- 65 - Recording This takes pictures of a baby with a healthy complexion. When you use the flash, the light from it is weaker than usual. It is possible to set di fferent birthdays for [Baby1] and [Baby2]. Y ou can display those during playback. ∫ Birthday setting 1 Press 3 / 4 to select [Age] and then press [MENU/SET].
- 66 - Recording This mode allows you to take vivid pic tures of a starry sk y or a dark subject. ∫ Setting the shutter speed Select a shu tter speed of [15 sec.], [30 sec.] or [60 sec.]. • Press the sh utter button ful ly to display the c ount down scree n.
- 67 - Recording Using the [Rec] Menu For det ails on [R ec] menu s ettings, r efer to P37 . Appl ica ble m odes : Set the number of pixels. The hi gher the numbers of pixels, the finer the detail of t he pictures will appear even when they are print e d onto large sheets.
- 68 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : This allows the Sensitivity to light (ISO sensitiv ity) to be set. Setting to a higher figure enables pictures to be taken even in dark places wi thout t he resulting pictures coming out dark. • For th e foc us range of flash wh en [ ] is set, r e fe r to P51 .
- 69 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in other s uch conditions where the color of whit e takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, this item adjusts to the color of w hite which is closest to what is seen by the eye in accordance with the light source.
- 70 - Recording ∫ Auto White Balance Depending on the conditions prevailing when pictures are taken, the pict ures may take on a reddish or bluish tinge. Furthermore, when a mult iple number of l ight so urces are being used or there is nothing with a color close to white, Au to White Balance may not f unction properly .
- 71 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : This allows the focusing method that suits t he positions and number of the subjects to be selected. ¢ [ Ø ] will be used during motion picture reco rding. • [AF Mode] is f i xe d to [ Ø ] in the following case s.
- 72 - Recording ∫ About [ š ] ([Face Detection] ) The following AF area frames are dis played when the c amera detects the face s. Y ellow: When the shutter button is pressed halfway , the frame turns green when the camera is focused. White : Displayed when more than one face is detected.

- 75 - Recording • Depending on th e operating c ondi tions, it may t ake time to take the next pict ure if you repeat the recording of pic tures. • It may t ake time to save pi ctures take n in Burst Mode on the card. If yo u take pic tures continuously w hile saving, the m aximum num ber of reco rdable pictures d ecreases.
- 76 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : Sets various color ef fects, including making the picture sharper , brighter , or applying a sepia tone. ¢ 1 This can be set only when In telligent Au to Mode is set. ¢ 2 This can be set only during Normal Pic ture Mode.
- 77 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : When Red-Eye Reduction ([ ], [ ] ) is selected, Red-Eye Removal is performed whenever the flash is used. The camera automatic ally detects red-eye and corrects the picture. Setti ngs: [ON]/[ OFF] • Only avail able when [AF Mode] is set to [ š ] and Face Detection is active.
- 78 - Recording Appl ica ble m odes : Y ou can take a picture with date and time of recording. • Date information for pi ctures recorded with the [Date St amp] s et cannot be deleted. • When prin ting pictures with [Date St amp] at a shop or with a printer , the da te will be printed on top of th e other if you choos e to print with the date.
- 79 - Recording Using the [Motion Picture] Menu For details on [Motion Picture] m enu setti ngs, refer to P37 . Appl ica ble m odes : This sets up the pictu re quality of motion pictures. Appl ica ble m odes : It will continually keep on focusing on a subject for which the focus was once set.
- 80 - Playback/Editing V arious methods of play back Y ou can play back the recorded pictures in various methods. 1 Press [ ( ]. 2 Press [MO DE]. 3 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select item , and then press [MENU/SET ]. • Following it ems can be selected.
- 81 - Playback/Editing Y ou can play back the pictures you have tak en in synchronization wit h mus ic, and you can do this in sequence while leaving a fixed interval bet ween each of the pictures. Y ou can also p lay back images that have been sor ted by category , images that hav e been set as favorites, etc.
- 82 - Playback/Editing ∫ T o filter images for slide show playback Y ou can filter imag es and play them b ack in a slide show by selec ting [Filtering] on the slide show menu screen. • If you select [All], you can p lay back a ll images in a slide sho w.
- 83 - Playback/Editing The images s orted into the ca tegory or images s et as favorite are played back. ∫ T o cancel filtering 1 Press 3 while playing back one picture at a time. 2 Press 3 / 4 to select [Filtering Off] and then press [MENU/SE T]. • Filtering is also can ce led by turning of f the camera or switching to Recording Mode.
- 84 - Playback/Editing 1 Press 3 / 4 to select [S elect Date] and then press [MENU/SET]. 2 Press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the date to be played back, and then press [MENU/ SET]. • If there were no pic tures recorded du ring a month, that mont h is not displayed.
- 85 - Playback/Editing Y ou can search for images by recorded date. • The recording date of the picture s ele cted in the playbac k scree n becomes the date select ed when the calend ar s creen is first displa yed. • If there are multiple picture s with the same record ing date, the fir st picture recor ded on that day is displayed.
- 86 - Playback/Editing Having Fun with Recorde d Pictures (Retouch ) Y ou can adjust t he color tone of the pictur es taken, or add your preferred effects. • The processed pictures are newly gen erated, so be sure that you have enough space in the built -in memory or on the card.
- 87 - Playback/Editing Apply effects similar to that of aesthetics or mak eup to brighten up any face. 1 Press 2 / 1 to s elect a picture, a nd then press 3 . • If you hav e filt ered imag es fo r play bac k by us ing [Sli de Show] (P81) or [Filt ering P lay] (P83) , the s election scr een appears .
- 88 - Playback/Editing 6 Af ter finishing the picture editing , press [MENU/SET]. • Confirmation scre en is displayed . Selecting [Y es] displ ays images before applic ation and afte r applicatio n. 7 Press [MENU/SET]. • Confirmatio n screen is displayed.
- 89 - Playback/Editing Y ou can add your desired ef fects to the pictures that you have t aken. 1 Press 2 / 1 to s elect a picture, a nd then press 3 . • If you hav e filt ered imag es fo r play bac k by us ing [Sli de Show] (P81) or [Filt ering P lay] (P83) , the s election scr een appears .
- 90 - Playback/Editing Using the [Playb ack] Menu Y ou can perform actions like cropping recorded pict ures, as well as set up the protection of recorded images, et c. • With [Retou ch], [Resize] or [Cr opping], a ne w edit ed picture is cr eat ed.
- 91 - Playback/Editing • Y ou can set up to 50 pic tures at on e time in [MUL TI]. • The picture qu ality of the resized pict ure will deteriorat e. • It may not be poss ible to resize pict ures recorded with other eq uipment. • The followin g images cannot be resi z ed.
- 92 - Playback/Editing Y ou can enlarge and then clip t he important part of t he reco rded picture. 1 Select [Croppin g] on the [Playbac k] menu. 2 Press 2 / 1 to s elect the picture, and then pres s [MENU/SET]. 3 Use the zoom lever and press 3 / 4 / 2 / 1 to select the p arts to be cropped .
- 93 - Playback/Editing Y ou can do the following if a mark has been added to pictures and they have been set as favo rites . • Play back only th e pictures set as favo rites. ([Fav orite] in [Filtering Play]) • Play back th e pictures set as fa vorites only as a Slide Sh ow.
- 94 - Playback/Editing DPOF “Digital Print Order Format” is a system that allows t he user to select which pictures to print, how many copies of each picture to prin t and whether or not to print the recording date on the pictures when using a DPOF compatible phot o printer or phot o printing store.
