Before Use - 10 - The LCD monito r can be rotated to s uit your needs. T his is convenient as it allows you to take pictures from various angles by adjust ing the LCD monitor . • Do not cover the AF Assist Lamp with yo ur fin gers or other object s.

Before Use - 14 - About the Lens ∫ Micro Four Thirds ™ mount specificati on le ns This unit can use the dedicated l enses compatible with the Micro Four Thirds System lens mount specification (Micro Four T hirds mount).
- 15 - Preparation Preparation Att ach ing/Det ac hing the Lens • Check that t he camera is turne d off. • Change lense s whe re there is not a lot of dirt or dust. Ref er t o P189 , P1 90 when dirt or dus t gets on the lens. T urn the lens rear cap A and the body cap B in the direction of the arrow to det ach them.
Preparation - 16 - Att ach the lens cap . While pres sing on the lens relea se button D , rot ate the lens tow ard the arrow until it stop s and then re move. • Always at tach the body cap to t he camera body so that dirt or dust doe s not ge t inside.
- 17 - Preparation In bright sunlight or backlight, the lens hood wi ll minimize lens flare and ghosting. The lens hood cuts of f exces s lighting and improves the picture quality .

- 19 - Preparation Charging the Battery ∫ About batteries that you can use with this unit • Use the dedicate d charger an d battery . • The battery is not c harged when the camera is shipped. Charge the battery before use. • Charge th e bat tery with the charger ind oors.
Preparation - 20 - ∫ Charging time • The indic ate d charging time is for when the batt er y has been discharged completel y . The charging ti me may vary dependin g on how the battery has been used. Th e charging time for the batter y in hot/cold environmen ts o r a battery th at h as n ot been used for a long time m ay be longer than norm al.
- 21 - Preparation ∫ Battery indication The battery indication is displayed on the screen. • The indicati on turns red and blinks if t he remaining battery power is exh austed. (T he s tatus indicato r also blinks) Recharge the bat tery or repl ace it with a ful l y charged batt ery .

Preparation - 24 - Inserting and Removin g the Card (optiona l)/the Battery • Check that t his unit is turned of f. • We rec ommend us ing a P anasonic card. Slide t he release le ver in the direction of the arrow and open the card/battery door . • Always use g enuine Panasonic batteries.

Basic - 32 - Tip s for t aking good pictures A AF as sist la mp • Do not cover the fl ash or the AF assist lamp wi th your fingers or other objects. • Hold the camer a gently with bo th hands, keep your arms still at your s i de and stan d with your feet s lightly apart .

Basic - 38 - Recording Mode: ñ T aking Pictur es using the Autom atic Function (Intelligent Auto Mode) The camera will set the most appropriate settings to match the subject and the recording conditions so we recom mend this mode f or beginners or those who want to leave the settings to the camera and take pictures easily .

- 41 - Basic The brightness and color optimally set by the camera can be easily matched to your preferences. This mode is usef ul for those who would like the settings m ade by the camera to match their preferences but do not like deali ng with detailed settings.
Basic - 42 - Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es with Defocus Control Fun ction Y ou can easily set the blurriness of the background while checking the screen. T ouch [ ] to display th e setting scre en. • When using the v iewfinder , press the rear dial se ve ral times to display the De focus Control setting scre en.
- 43 - Basic Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es with Y our Favo rite Settings (Program AE Mo de) The camera automatically sets the shutt er speed and the aperture value according to the brightness of the subject. Y ou can take pictures with greater freedom by changing various settings in [REC] Mode menu.
Basic - 44 - In Program AE Mode, you can change the pres et aperture value and shutter speed without changing the exposure. This is called Program Shift. Y ou can make the bac kground more blurred by decreasing the aperture value or record a moving subject more dynamically b y slowing the shutter s peed when taking a picture in Program AE Mode.
- 45 - Basic Recording Mode: Recording Motion Pictur es This can record full high definition motion pictures compatible with the A VCHD format or motion pictures rec orded in Motion J PEG .

Basic - 54 - Deleting Pictures Once deleted, pictures cannot be recovered. Press [ ( ]. T o delete a single picture Select the pic t ure to be dele ted, a nd then touch [] . T ouch [DELETE SINGLE]. • Confirmati on screen is displayed. Picture is delet ed by selecti ng [YES].

Basic - 56 - Setting the Menu This camera offers menu selections that allow you to customize it s operation to maximize your picture taking experience. In particular , the [SETUP] menu contains some important settings relating to the camera’s clock and power .

- 69 - Recording Recording Mode: Recording Optical Image St abil izer Using one of these modes, jitt er during picture taking is detected, and t he camera automatically compensates the jitter , enabling jitter-free images to be taken. The interchangeable lens ( H-FS014042, H-FS045200) has a stabilizer function.
Recording - 70 - ∫ Preventing jitter ( camera shake) When the jitter alert [ ] appears, use [ST ABILIZER] (P132) , a tripod, the self-timer (P81) or th e remote shutter (DM W-RSL1; optional) (P184) . • Shutter speed will be slower pa rt icularly in t he fo llowin g c ases.
- 71 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es with the Zoom [Y ou can only use the Optical Zoom in [ ], and the Optical Zoom, the Extended T ele Conversion in [ ¿ ] m ode.] ∫ Optica l Zoom Y ou can zoom-out to record landscapes etc. in wide angle (Wide) or zoom-in to make people and objects appear closer (T el e) by rotating the zoom ring.
Recording - 72 - Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es using the Built- in Flash Note • Be careful not to catch a f in g er when cl os in g a flash bul b. Applicable modes: Set the built-in flash to match the recording. • Open th e fl ash. 1 Select [FLAS H] in the [REC] Mode menu.

Recording - 76 - Recording Mode: Compensating the Exposure Use this function when you c annot achieve appropriate expos ure due to the difference in brightness between the subject and the background. Look at t he following examples. Press th e rear dia l to switch to Exp osure Compensatio n operation .

Recording - 78 - T ouch [SET]. Focus on the subject and t ake a picture . A When Burs t Mode is set to h igh speed [H] . • Hold down th e sh utter but to n full y to activa te the Burst Mode .

Recording - 80 - ∫ Changi ng the sett ings for [ / SETTI NGS], [STEP] and [SE QUENCE] in Au to Bracket 1 Select [AUTO BRACKET] in the [REC] Mod e menu. (P56) 2 Press 3 / 4 to select [ / S ETTINGS], [STEP] or [SEQUENCE] and then press [M ENU/ SE T] .

Recording - 82 - Note • T ime setti ng for the sel f timer c an als o be set by [SE LF -TIMER] in the [ REC] Mode menu. • Setting of the time setting for th e s elf t i mer the [REC] Mod e menu is not pos sible when Intelligent A u to Mode is set.
- 83 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es with Auto Focus This allows the focusing method that suit s the positions and number of the s ubjects to be selected. Also, it is poss ible to set the focus to the subject spec ified on the touch panel.
Recording - 84 - The camera automatically detects the person’ s face. The focus and exposure can then be adjusted to fit t hat face no matter what portion of the picture it is in. (max. 15 areas) When the camer a detects a person’s face, the AF area is displayed.
- 85 - Recording Focus and exposure can be adjusted to a spec ified subject. Focus and exp osure will keep on following the subj ect even if it moves. (Dynamic tracking) ∫ When operating the touch panel Y ou can lock the subject by touching it. • Perform t he opera t ion after canceling the touch shutter function.
Recording - 86 - Up to 23 points for each AF area c an be focused. This is effective when the subject is not in the center of t he screen. (AF area fram e will be same as im age aspect ratio se tting) Note • The 23 AF areas ca n be divi ded into 9 areas and the are a to b e focu sed can be set.
- 87 - Recording • Perform t he opera t ion after canceling the touch shutter function. • Using the butt ons, you can display the AF ar ea s etting scre en by pressing 2 , then 4 . When selecting [ š ], [ Ø ] Position and size of the AF area can be c hanged.
Recording - 88 - ∫ Move the AF area easily with [ DIRECT FOCUS AREA] function When the [DIRECT FOCUS AREA ] in the [CUSTOM] menu is set to [ON] while [ š ], [ ] or [ Ø ] is selected, it is possible to move the AF area directly with the cursor button.
- 89 - Recording Recording Mode: T aking Pictur es with Manual Fo cus Use this function when you want to f ix the focus or when the dist ance between the lens and the subject is determined and you do not want to ac tivate Auto Focus. Set the [FOCUS MODE] in [REC] M ode menu to [MF].
Recording - 90 - ∫ Displaying the MF Assist • It is display ed by rotating the f ocus ring or touc hi ng the screen. • It can also be di splayed by pressing 2 to display the setup sc reen for the enlarged area, deciding t he are a to enlarge using the c urs or button, and then pres s ing [MENU/SET ] .
- 91 - Recording 1 Rotate the focus ring to focus on the subject. 2 Rotate it a little more. 3 Finely focus on the subject by rotating the focus ring slowly in reverse. Note • If you use th e zoom function af ter foc using on the subj ec t, focus on the sub ject again.
Recording - 92 - Recording Mode: Adjusting the White Bala nce In sunlight, under incandescent lights or in ot her such conditions where the color of white takes on a reddish or bluish tinge, thi s item adjust s t o t he color of white which is closest to what is seen by the eye i n ac cordance with the light source.
