3 Precautions 1. Recording Copyright —Unless it’ s for personal use only , recording copyrighted material is illegal with- out the permission of the copyright holder . 2. A C Fuse —The AC fuse inside the unit is not user - serviceable. If you cannot turn on the unit, contact your Onkyo dealer .
4 Precautions —Continued F or British models Replacement and mounting of an AC plug on the po wer supply cord of this unit should be performed only by qualified service personnel.

B ST ANDBY indicator (32) This indicator lights up when the A V receiver is in Standby mode, and it flashes while a signal is being receiv ed from the remote controller .

8 Front & Rear P anels —Continued A DIGIT AL IN OPTICAL 1, 2 & COAXIAL These optical and coaxial jacks can be used to con- nect a CD or D VD player and other components with digital audio outputs. B COMPONENT VIDEO A D VD player , TV , or other component that sup- ports component video can be connected here.
9 Bef ore Using the A V receiver Notes: • If the remote controller doesn’t w ork reliably , try replacing the batteries. • Don’t mix ne w and old batteries or dif ferent types of batteries. • If you intend not to use the remote controller for a long time, remov e the batteries to prev ent damage from leakage or corrosion.
10 Remote Contr oller Including the A V receiver, the remote controller can be used to control up to six different components. The remote controller has a specific operating mode for use with each type of component. Modes are selected by using the five REMO TE MODE buttons.

16 Remote Controller —Continued T APE mode is used to control an Onkyo cassette recorder connected to the A V receiver via . To set the remote contr oller to T APE mode, press the [RECEIVER] REMO TE MODE button. For twin cassette decks, only deck B can be controlled.
17 Enjo ying Home Theater Y ou can use two sets of speakers with the A V receiv er: speak er set A and speak er set B . Speaker set A should be used in your main listening room for up to 5.1-channel playback. *While speaker set B is on, speaker set A is reduced to 2.
18 Connecting Y our Speaker s F or the best surround-sound e xperience, you should con- nect five speakers and a po wered subwoofer . The following table sho ws which channels you should use based on the number of speakers that you ha ve.
19 Connecting Y our Speakers —Continued Using a suitable cable, connect the A V receiver’ s SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT to an input on your po wered sub- woofer , as sho wn. If your subwoofer is unpo wered and you’ re using an external amplifier , connect the SUB- WOOFER PRE OUT to an input on the amplifier .
20 Connecting Antenna This section explains ho w to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna, and how to connect commercially av ailable outdoor FM and AM antennas. The A V receiver w on’t pick up an y radio signals without any antenna connected, so you must connect the antenna to use the tuner .
21 Connecting Antenna —Continued If you cannot achiev e good reception with the supplied indoor FM antenna, try a commercially av ailable out- door FM antenna instead. Notes: • Outdoor FM antennas work best outside, b ut usable results can sometimes be obtained when installed in an attic or loft.
22 Connecting Y our Components • Before making any A V connections, read the manuals supplied with your other A V components. • Don’t connect the po wer cord until you’ ve completed and double-checked all A V connections.
23 Connecting Y our Components —Continued By connecting both the audio and video outputs of your D VD player and other A V components to the A V receiver, you can select both the audio and video simultaneously simply by selecting the appropriate input source on the A V receiver.

29 Connecting Y our Components —Continued ■ CD Play er or T urntable with Built-in Phono Preamp ■ T urntable (MM) with no Phono Preamp Built-in A phono preamp is necessary to connect a turntable that doesn’t ha ve a phono preamp b uilt-in.
30 Connecting Y our Components —Continued As of this printing, the Onkyo Remote Interacti ve Dock is the only HDD-compatible component a vailable. Connect your HDD-compatible component’ s analog audio output jacks to the A V receiver’ s VIDEO 3 IN L/R jacks or T APE IN L/R jacks.
31 Connecting Y our Components —Continued W ith (Remote Interactive), you can use the follo wing special functions: ■ A uto P ower On/Standby When you start playback on a component connected via , if the A V receiv er is on Standby , it will automatically turn on and select that component as the input source.

33 Fir st Time Setup To enjoy Dolby Digital and DTS, you must connect your D VD player to the A V receiver by using a digital audio connection (coaxial or optical). Here are the default assignments. W ith this function, you can assign digital inputs to input sources.
34 First Time Setup —Continued This section explains ho w to specify your speaker con- figuration. For speakers with a cone diameter larger than 6-1/2 inches (16 cm), specify Large (full band) . For those with a smaller diameter , specify Small (default crossov er 100 Hz) .
35 First Time Setup —Continued 5 Use the Down [ ] b utton to select “Center , ” and then use the Left and Right [ ]/[ ] buttons to select Small , Large , or None . Small: Select if the center speaker is small. Large: Select if the center speaker is large.

37 Playing Y our A V Components —Continued The multichannel input is for connecting a component with individual 5.1-channel analog audio output jacks, such as a D VD player or MPEG decoder .
38 Using the T uner W ith the built-in tuner , you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. Y ou can store your fa vorite stations as presets for quick selection. AM Frequency Step Setup (not North America and Europe) Here you can specify the AM frequency step used in your area.
39 Using the T uner —Continued Presetting Radio Stations Y ou can store up to 30 of your fav orite radio stations as presets. Selecting Preset Stations Deleting Presets Displaying Radio Inf ormation 1 T une into the station that y ou want to store as a preset.
40 Using the T uner —Continued Using RDS (European models onl y) RDS only works with European models and only in areas where RDS broadcasts are av ailable. When tuned into an RDS station, the RDS indicator appears. ■ What is RDS? RDS stands for Radio Data System and is a method of transmitting data in FM radio signals.
41 Using the T uner —Continued Displaying Radio T ext (R T) When tuned to an RDS station that’ s broadcasting R T text information, that information can be displayed. Notes: • The message “W aiting” may appear while the A V receiv er waits for R T information.
42 Common Functions This chapter explains functions that can be used with an y input source. Y ou can connect a pair of stereo headphones (1/4-inch phone plug) to the A V receiver’ s PHONES jack for pri- vate listening, as sho wn. Notes: •A lw ays turn down the v olume before connecting your headphones.
43 Common Functions —Continued W ith this function, you can temporarily mute the output of the A V receiver. To unmute the A V r eceiver, press the remote control- ler’ s [MUTING] button again, or adjust the volume. The output is unmuted and the MUTING indicator goes off.
44 Common Functions —Continued Y ou can adjust the lev el of each speaker in speaker set A while listening to an input source. These temporary adjustments are cancelled when the A V receiver is set to Standby . Notes: •Y ou cannot use this function while the A V receiver is muted.
45 Using the Listening Modes See “ About the Listening Modes” on page 46 for detailed information about the listening modes. Selecting on the A V receiver ■ [STEREO] button This button selects the Stereo listening mode.
46 Using the Listening Modes —Continued About the Listening Modes W ith its built-in surround-sound decoders and DSP pro- grams, the A V receiver can transform your home listen- ing room into a movie theater or concert hall. Direct The selected input source is output directly with minimal processing for a pure sound.
47 Using the Listening Modes —Continued The following table lists all the listening modes and sho ws which modes can be selected for each input signal format. Input signal format Analog, PCM *1 *1. In the Direct listening modes, PCM signals at 32 kHz, 44.
48 Adjusting the Listening Modes Some functions are not av ailable with all speaker config- urations. Audio Adjust provides various functions for adjusting the sound. The Audio Adjust functions are explained belo w . Input Channel Settings ■ Multiplex This setting determines which channel is output from a stereo multiplex source.
49 Adjusting the Listening Modes —Continued PL II Music Mode Settings These settings apply to only 2-channel (stereo) sources. ■ P anorama W ith this function, you can broaden the width of the front stereo image when using the Pro Logic II Music listening mode.
50 Recor ding This chapter explains ho w to record the selected input source to an A V component with recording capability , and how to record audio and video from tw o different sources. Y ou can record only to A V components that are con- nected to the T APE OUT or VIDEO 1 OUT jacks.
51 Ad v anced Setup Crosso ver Frequency This setting only applies to the speakers that you speci- fied as Small in the “Speaker Configuration” on page 34. To get the best bass performance from your speaker sys- tem, you need to set the crossov er frequency according to the size and frequency response of your speakers.
52 Adv anced Setup —Continued Speaker Distance To get the best from surround sound, it’ s important that the sound from each speaker reaches the listener at the same time. T o achieve this, you need to specify the dis- tance from each speaker to the listening position.
53 Adv anced Setup —Continued Note: •A quicker way to adjust the speak er lev els is to press the remote controller’ s [TEST TONE] b utton to output the test tone, use the [LEVEL–] and [LEVEL+] but- tons to adjust the lev els, and use the [CH SEL] button to select the speakers.
54 Adv anced Setup —Continued When using progressiv e scanning on your D VD player , you may find that the picture and sound are out of sync. W ith this setting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals. Y ou can set it to 0, 20, or 40 milliseconds.
55 Tr oubleshooting If you hav e any trouble using the A V receiv er, look for a solution in this section. Can’t turn on the A V receiver? • Make sure that the po wer cord is properly plugged into the wall outlet. • Unplug the power cord from the w all outlet, wait five seconds or more, then plug it in again.
56 Tr oubleshooting —Continued • On the A V receiver, the subw oofer setting in the speaker configuration is set to No. Set the subwoofer setting to Y es. There’ s no sound with a cer tain signal format? • Check the digital audio output setting on the con- nected device.
57 Tr oubleshooting —Continued Can’t record? • On your recorder , make sure the correct input is selected. •T o prev ent signal loops and damage to the A V receiv er, input signals are not fed through to outputs with the same name (e.g., T APE IN to T APE OUT , or VIDEO 1 IN to VIDEO 1 OUT).
