AV Receiver TX-NR709 Instruction Manual Thank you for purchasing an Onkyo AV Receiver. Please read this manual thorou ghly before making connections and plugg ing in the unit. Following the in structions in this manual will enable you to obtain optimu m performance and listening enjoyment from your new A V Receiver.

12 En Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Connecting the Speaker Cables The following illustration shows which speaker should be connected to each pair of terminals. If you’re using only one surround back speaker, connect it to the SURR BAC K L terminals.
13 En Speaker Configura tion The following table indicate s the channels you sh ould use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many speakers you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
14 En Using Dipole Speakers You can use dipole speakers for the su rround and surround back speakers. Dipole speakers output the same sound in two directions. Dipole speakers typically have an arrow printed on them to indicate how they should be positioned.
15 En Connecting a Power Amplifier If you want to use a more powerful power amplifier, you can use the AV receiver as a preamp. Connect all speaker outputs to the power amplifie r. See the manuals supplied with your amplifier for details. Note *1 Specify “ None ” for any channel that you don’ t want to output ( ➔ page 47 ).
16 En Connecting AV componen ts • Before making any AV connections, read the manuals supplied with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-check ed all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good connect ions (loose connections can cause noise or malfunctions).
17 En Connect your components to the appropriate jacks. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 45 ).
18 En Connecting Your Components The on-screen menus appear only on a TV tha t is connected to the HDMI OUT MAIN . If your TV i s connected to other video outputs, use the AV receiv er’s display when changing settings.
19 En Connect your components to the appropri ate jacks. The default i nput assignments are show n below. See “Connection Tips and Video Signal Path” for more information ( ➔ page 83 ). ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 45 ). Note *1 Do not connect the AV re ceiver’s USB port to a USB port on your computer.
20 En With u (Remote Interactive) , you can use th e following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u while the AV receiver is on Standby, the AV receiver will au tomatically turn on and select that component as the input source.
21 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radi o signals without any antenna connected, so you must c onnect the antenna to use the tuner.

24 En Note • The buttons you can use will differ depending on the devices and media used for playback. This section describes icons that appear on the display during media playback. This section explains how to play music/video files on the iPod/iPhone.
25 En Extended Mode (Music) control The music content informa ti on is displayed (lists are displayed), and you can control the music content while looking at the screen. Top screen list: Playlists, Ar tists, Albums, Genres, Songs, Composers, Shuffle Songs, Now Playing.
26 En Listening to Other Internet Ra dio To listen to other internet radio stations , insert the following step after step 1 in the “Listening to vTuner Internet Radio” section. Registering My Favorit es *1 You can add the currently playing song or station to the “ My Favorites ”.
27 En This section explains how to play music files on a computer or media server through the AV receiver (Server Playback). Windows Media Player 11 Set up This section explains how to configure Windows Media Player 11 so that the AV recei ver can play the music files stored on your computer.
28 En Using Remote Playback Using the Tuner With the built-in tuner you can enjoy AM and FM radio stations. You can store your favor ite st ations as presets for quick selection.
29 En ■ Tuning into stations by frequenc y You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/F M Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets. Note • You can name your radio presets for easy identificatio n ( ➔ page 53 ).
30 En ■ Displaying Radio Te xt (RT) ■ Finding Stations by Type (PTY) You can search for ra dio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS progra m types (P TY) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP once.
31 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey MultEQ ® XT automat ically determi nes the number of speakers connected, their size for purposes of bass management, optimum cr ossover frequencies to the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
32 En Note • You can cancel Audyssey Mu ltEQ XT Ro om Correction and Speaker Setup at any point in this procedure simply by disconne cting the se tup microp hone. • Do not connect or disconnect any speak ers during Audyssey MultEQ XT Room Corre ction and Speaker Setup.
33 En Error Messages While Audyssey MultEQ ® XT Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages below may appear. The options are: ` Retry : Try again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey M ultEQ XT Room Correction and Speaker Setup.
34 En Selecting Listening Modes See “About Listening Modes” for detailed information about the listening modes ( ➔ page 35 ). ■ Listening Mode Buttons MOVIE/TV button This button selects the list ening modes intended for use with movies and TV.
35 En About Listening Modes The AV receiver’s listening modes can tr ansform your listening room into a movi e theater or concert hall, with high fidelity and stunning surround sound. ■ Explanatory Notes Input Sour ce The following audio formats are supported by the listening mode.
36 En ■ Onkyo-Origi nal DSP List ening Modes ■ Listening Modes Listening Mode Description Input Source Speaker Layout Orchestra Suitable for classical or operatic musi c, this mode emphasizes the surround channels in or der to widen the ster eo image, and simulates the natural reverberation of a large hall.
37 En Dolby Pro Logic IIx *4 Dolby Pro Logi c II Dolby Pro Logic IIx expands any 2-chann el source for 7.1-channel playback. It provides a very natur al and seamless surround-so und experience that fully envelops the listener. As well as music and movies, video games can also benefit from the dramatic spatial effects and vivid imaging.
38 En Neo:6 This mode expands any 2-chann el source for up to 7.1-channel playback. It uses seven full-bandwidth chan nels of matrix decoding for matrix-encoded material, providing a very natural an d seam less surround sound experience that fully envelops the listener.
39 En Note *1 Depending on the “ Speaker Configuration ” setting ( ➔ page 47 ), the output can be switched between the fr ont high, front wide or surround b ack speakers by pressing SP LAYOUT . *2 Pure Audio cannot be selected when Zone 2 is active.
40 En The Home menu provides you qu ick access to frequently used menus without having to go through the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 For the PORT input selector, the name of Universal Port Option Dock will be displayed.
41 En You can display various info rmation about the current input source as follows. (Components connected to the UNIVERSAL PORT jack are excluded.) The following information ca n typically be displayed. Tip • Alternatively, you can use the AV receiver’s DISPLAY .
42 En By using ACTIVITIES in Easy macro mode, you can sequentially operate Onkyo components via simple commands from a single-butt on press. These commands are user-definable. See “Using Normal Mac ros” ( ➔ page 73 ). ■ MY MOVIE First, the TV, the Onkyo DVD player, and the AV receiver are turned on.
43 En Advanced Op erations Advanced Setup The on-screen setup menus a ppear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings. Sett ings are organized into 9 categories on the main menu . Carry out the settings by u sing the on-screen display.
44 En Main Menu Input/Output Assig n Monitor Out If you connect yo ur TV to HDMI output, “ Monitor Out ” setting is automatical ly set so that the onscreen setup menus are displayed and com posite video, S-Video, and component video sources are upconverted * and ou tput.
45 En HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an input selecto r. For example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/DVD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
46 En Digital Audio Input If you connect a component to a digital audio input, you must assign that input to an input selector. For example, if you connect your CD player to the OPTICAL IN 1 , you must assign “ OPTICAL1 ” to the “ TV/CD ” input selector.
47 En Note •I f t h e “ Speakers Type(Front) ” setting is set to “ Bi-Amp ”, Powered Zone 2 cannot be used . •W h e n t h e “ Powered Zone 2 ” setting is set to “ Yes ”, the surround back, front wide and front high speakers cann ot be used.
48 En ■ Wireless Subwoo fer ` Yes : The audio is output from the speakers connected to the wireless unit. ` No : The audio is not output fro m the speakers connected to the wireless unit.
49 En Equalizer Settings With the Equalizer settings, you can adjust the tone of speakers individually with a 7-band equalizer. The vo lume of each speaker can be set ( ➔ page 48 ). ■ Equalizer ` Manual : You can adjust the equalize r for each speaker manually.
50 En Main menu Audio Adjust With the Audio Adjust functions and settings, you can adjust the sound and listening modes as you like. Multiple x/Mono ■ Multiple x Input Channe l ` Main ` Sub ` Main/Sub This setting determi nes wh ich channel of a stereo multiplex source is output.
51 En ■ Dolby Volum e ` Off ` On Dolby Volume automatical ly adjusts the difference in volume levels which can occu r between different conten ts or source components, freeing the user from having to make volume adjustments. Also, by adjusting the frequency balance according to the playback volume, it recreates the origina l so urce audio.
52 En Items can be set i ndividually for each input selector. Main menu Source Setup Audyssey ■ Audyssey ` Off ` Movie : Select this setting for movie ma terial. The Audyssey indicator lights. ` Music : Select this setting for music mat erial. The Audyssey indicator lights.
53 En Note • If you w ant to use Audyssey Dy namic EQ ® or Audyssey Dynamic Volume ® with THX listening modes, set the “ Loudness Plus ” setting to “ Off ” and set “ Preserve THX Settings ” to “ No ” ( ➔ pag e 49 ). • If you make Dynamic Volume active, “ Dynamic EQ ” is set to “ On ”.
54 En To correct a character: Tip • To na me a radio pre set, use TUNER to select AM or FM, and then select the preset ( ➔ page 29 ). • To restore a custom name to its default, erase the custom name by entering an empty white space for each letter.
55 En ■ Game Mode *3*4*5 ` Off ` On If video signal delay occurs during playback on a video component (i.e., game cons ole), select the corresponding input source and set the “ Game Mode ” setting to “ On ”. The delay will decrease but in return the picture quality will become poor.
56 En ■ Fixed Mode ` Off : The format is dete cted au tomatically. If no digital input signal is present, the corresponding analog input is used instead. ` PCM : Only 2-channel PCM format input signals will be heard. If the input signal is not PCM, the PCM indicator will flash and no ise may also be produced.
57 En ■ DTS/DTS-ES/DTS-HD With this setting, you can sp ecify the listening mode used when DTS or DT S- HD High Resolution format digital audio signals are pl ayed (DVD, LD, CD, etc.). Specifies the default li stening mode for DTS-HD Master Audio sources, su ch as Blu-ray or HD DVD (input via HDMI).
58 En Tuner For AM/FM tuning to work prope rly, you must specify the AM/FM frequency step used in your area. Note that when this setting i s changed, all radio presets w ill be deleted. ■ AM/FM Frequency Step (North America n and Taiwan models ) ` 10kHz/200kHz : ` 9kHz/50kHz: Select the frequency step according to your area.
59 En ■ Audio TV Out ` Off ` On This preference determines whether the incoming audio signal is output from the HDMI output. You may want to turn this preference on if your TV is connected to the HDMI output and you want to listen to the audio from a connected component through your TV’s speakers.
60 En Network This section explains how to configure the AV receiver’s network setti ngs manually. If your router’s DHCP server is enabled, yo u don’t need to change any of these settings, as the AV rece iver is set to use DHCP to configure itself automatically by default (i.
61 En Main menu Remote Controller Setup Remote Mode Setup See “Looking up for Remote Control Code” ( ➔ page 69 ). With this preference, you can protect your settings by locking the setup menus. Main menu Lock Setup ■ Setup ` Locked ` Unlocked When “ Locked ” is selected, the se tup menus will be locked and you cannot change any setting.
62 En Audyssey ■ Audyssey See “Audyssey” in “Source Setup ” ( ➔ page 52 ). ■ Dynamic EQ See “Dynamic EQ” in “Source Setup” ( ➔ page 52 ).
63 En Zone 2 In addition to the main listen ing room, you can also enjoy pla yback in another room, which we call Zone 2. For either of the rooms, you can specify a different input source. There are two ways you can connect Zone 2 speakers: 1. Connect them directly to the AV receiver.
64 En ■ Operating on the AV receiver ■ Operating on the rem ote controller To control Zone 2, you must press ZONE2 on the r emote controller first.
65 En Muting Zone 2 ■ Operating on the remote controller Tip • To unmute, press ZONE2 followed by MUTING agai n. Note • Only analog input sources are output fro m the ZONE 2 LI NE OUT L/R jacks and FRONT WIDE/ZONE 2 L/R terminals. Digital input sources are not output.
66 En Controlling Other Components iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock UP-A1 Dock With the UP-A1 Dock, you can easily play the mu sic, photos, or movies stored on y our Apple iPod/iPhone through the AV receiver and enjoy great sound. You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to operate your iPod/iPhone.
67 En ■ Status Messages If either of the following me ssages is not displayed on the AV receiver’s display, check the connection to your iPod/iPhone. • PORT Reading The AV receiver is checking the connection with the dock. • PORT Not Support The AV receiver do not support the connected dock.
68 En ✔ : Available buttons • With some iPod/iPhone models, generations and RI Docks, certain buttons ma y not work as expected. • For detailed operation of iPod/iPhone, please refe r to the instruction manual of the RI Dock. *1 This button does not tur n the Onkyo DS-A2 or DS-A2X RI Dock on or off.
69 En Controlling Other Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other AV compone nts, including those made by other manufacturers. Th is section ex plains how to enter the remote control code for a compon ent that you want to control: DVD, TV , CD, etc.
70 En Onkyo components that are connected via u are controlled by pointing the remote controller at the AV receiver, not the component. Th is allows you to control components that are out of view, in a rack, for example.
71 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may not work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 When you pres s 8 SOURCE , the related component is turned on (or off). *2 The p function is not supp orted. The p supported by the AV receiver is the CE C system control function of the HDMI standar d.
72 En The AV receiver’s re mote controller can learn the commands of other remote c ontrollers. By transmitting, for example, the Pla y command from your CD player’s remote controller, the supplied remote controller can learn it, and then reproduce the ex act same command when its 1 is pressed in CD remote mode.
73 En You can program the remote co ntroller’s ACTIVITIES to perform a sequence of re mote control actions. Example: To play a CD you typically ne ed to perform the following actions: 1. Press RECEIVER to select the Re ceiver remote controller mode.
74 En Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer.

79 En ■ If the picture on your TV/monitor connected to the HDMI output(s) is unstable, try switching the DeepColor function off To turn off the DeepColor function, simultaneously press the CBL/SAT and 8 ON/STANDBY buttons on the AV receiver. While holding down CBL/SAT , press 8 ON/STANDBY until “ Off ” appears on the display.
80 En Firmware Update To update the firmware of the AV receiver, you can choose from the following two methods: update via network, or update via USB storage. Choose the one that best suits your envi ronment. Before proceeding with the update, please read the co rresponding explanations carefully.
81 En Troubleshooting Case 1: If “ No Up date ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver, i t means that t h e firmware has already been updated. You do not need to do anything further. Case 2: If an error occurs, “ Erro r!! *-** No media ” is displayed on the front display of the AV receiver.

83 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV receiver supports severa l connection formats for compat ibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your components. Use the follow ing sections as a guide.
84 En Audio components can be conne cted by using any of the following audio connection form ats: anal og, analo g multichannel, optical , coaxial or HDMI. When choosing a connection format, bear in mind that the AV receiver does not convert di gital input signals for analog line outputs and vice versa.

86 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interactive over HDMI, is the name of the system control function found on Onkyo components. The AV receiver can be us ed with CEC (Consumer Elect ronics Control), which al lows system control over HDMI and is part of the HDMI standa rd.

88 En About HDMI Designed to meet the inc reased demands of digital TV, HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for conne cting TVs, projectors, Blu -ray Disc/DVD players, set- top boxes, and other video components.
89 En Network/USB Features The following diagram shows how you can connect the AV receiver to your home network. In this example, it’s connected to a LAN port on a router, which has a 4-port 100Base-TX switch built-in. ■ Ethernet Networ k For the best results, a 100B ase-TX switched Ethernet network is recommended.
90 En ■ Server playback The AV receiver can play digital music files stored on a computer or media server and supports the following technologies: • Windows Media Player 11 • Windows Media Player 12 • Windows Media Connect 2.
91 En For server playback and playback from a USB device, the AV receiver supports the following music file formats. Variable bit-rate (VBR) fi les are supported. However, playback time may not be display correctly. Note • With remote playback, the AV receiver does not suppor t the following music file fo rmats: FLAC and Ogg Vorbis .
