AV Receiver HT-R590 Instruction Manual Thank you for purchasing an Onkyo AV Receiver. Please read this manual thoroughl y before making connections and plugg ing in the unit. Following th e instructions in this manual will enable you to obtain opti mum performance and listening enjoyment from your new AV Receiver.

11 En Connections Connecting the AV Receiver Connecting the Sp eaker Cables The following illustration shows which spea ker should be connected to each pair of terminals. If you’re using only one surround back speaker, connect it to the SURROUND BACK or FRONT HIGH L terminals.
12 En Speaker Configurat ion The following table indicates the channels you should use depending on the number of speakers that you have. No matter how many spea ke rs you use, a powered subwoofer is recommended for a really powerful and solid bass.
13 En Connected image wi th AV components • Before making any AV connecti ons, read the manuals supplie d with your AV components. • Don’t connect the power cord until you’ve completed and double-checke d all AV connections. • Push plugs in all the way to make good conne ctions (loose c onnections can cause noise or malfunctions).
14 En Connect your components to the appropr iate jack s. The default input assi gnments are shown below. ✔ : Assignment can be changed ( ➔ page 35 ).

16 En With u (Remote Interactive) , you can use th e following special functions: ■ System On/Auto Power On When you start playback on a component connected via u , if the AV receiver is on Standby, it will automatically turn on and sele ct that component as the input source.
17 En This section explains how to connect the supplied indoor FM antenna and AM loop antenna. The AV receiver won’t pick up any radi o signals without any antenna connected, so you must c onnect the antenna to use the tuner.

22 En ■ Manual tuni ng mode In manual tuning mode, FM st ations will be in mono. ■ Tuning into station s by frequency You can tune into AM and FM stations directly by entering the appropriate frequency. Presetting AM/FM Stations You can store a combination of up to 40 of your favorite AM/FM radio stations as presets.
23 En ■ Displaying Radio Text (RT) ■ Finding Station s by Type (PTY) You can search for radio stations by type. ■ Listening to Traffic News (TP) You can search for stations that broadcast traffic news. RDS program types (PTY) 1 Press RT/PTY/TP once.
24 En Using Basic Functions With the supplied calibrated microphone, Audyssey 2EQ ® automatical ly determines the number o f speakers connected , their size for purposes of bass management, optimum crosso ver frequencies t o the subwoofer (if present), and distances from the primary listening position.
25 En Note • You can cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction a nd Speaker Setup at any point in this proced ure simply by disconnecting the setup microphone. • Do not connect or disconnect any speakers during Audyssey 2EQ Room Correc tion and Speaker Setup.
26 En Error Messages While Audyssey 2EQ ® Room Correction and Speaker Setup is in progress, one of the error messages be low may appear. The options are: ` Retry : Try again. ` Cancel : Cancel Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup. • Ambient noise is too high.
27 En Selecting L istening Modes See “Listening Modes” for detailed in formation about the listening modes ( ➔ page 28 ). ■ Listening Mode Buttons MOVIE/TV button This button selects the listening modes intended for use with movies and TV. MUSIC button This button selects the listening modes intended for use with music.
28 En Input Source The following audio formats are supported by the li stening mode. Speaker Layout The illustration shows which spea kers are activated in each channel. See “S p Config (Sp eaker Configuration)” for the speaker setup ( ➔ page 36 ).
29 En ■ Listening Modes Listening Mode Description Input Source Speaker Layout Direct In this mode, au dio from the inpu t source is output without surround-so und processing. The speaker configuration (presence of speakers) and spea ker distance settings are enabled, but much of the processing set via Home menu is disabled.
30 En Note *1 These listening modes cannot be selected during USB or iPod playback. *2 When the input source contain s the encoded front high channel, front high speakers output the sound. *3 If there are no surround back speakers, Dolby Pro Logic II is used.
31 En The Home menu provides you quick access to frequently used menus without having to go th rough the long standard menu. This menu enab les you to change settings and view the current information. Note *1 Depending on the inpu t source and listening mode, not all channels show n here outpu t the sound.
32 En You can adjust the bright ness of the AV receiver’s display. You can display various info rmation abo ut the current input source as follows. The following information ca n typically be displayed. Tip • Alternatively, you can use the AV receiver’s DISPLAY .
33 En You can temporarily mute the output of the AV receiver. This section explains how to record the selected input source to a component with recording capability, and how to record audio and vide o from different sources. AV Recording Audio sources can be recorded to a recorder (e.
34 En Advanced Operations Advanced Setup Note • The on-screen setup menus are disp layed when: – There is no video input, or – The video input is 480p, 576p, 720p , 1080i, or 1080p. The on-screen setup menus appear on the connected TV and provide a convenient way to change the AV receiver’s various settings.
35 En Menu HDMI Input If you connect a video component to an HDMI input, you must assign that input to an input selecto r. For example, if you connect your Blu-ra y Disc/DVD player to HDMI IN 2 , you must assign “ HDMI2 ” to the “ BD/DVD ” input selector.
36 En Menu Sp Config Here you can check the sett ings made by Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speake r Setup, or set them manually, which is useful if you change on e of the connected speakers after using Audyssey 2EQ Room Correction and Speaker Setup.
37 En Menu Sp Distance Here you can specify the distance from each speaker to the listening position so that the sound from each speaker arrives at the listener’s ears as the sound designer intended. ■ Unit ` feet : Distances can be set in feet. Range: 1ft to 30ft in 1 foot steps.
38 En Dolby Settings ■ PLIIx Music (2ch Input) These settings apply to only 2-channel stereo sources. If you’re not using any surr ound back speakers, these settings apply to Dolby Pro Logic II, not Dolby Pro Logic IIx.
39 En Menu Source Setup Audyssey ■ Audyssey ` Off ` Movie : Select this set ting for movie material. The Audyssey indicator will light ( ➔ page 8 ). ` Music : Select this setting for m usic material . The Audyssey indicator will light ( ➔ page 8 ).
40 En A/V Sync ■ A/V Sync ` 0m s to 400 ms in 10 ms steps When using progressive scanning on your Blu-ray Disc/DVD player, you may fi nd that the picture and sound are out of sync. With this se tting, you can correct this by delaying the audio signals.
41 En Setting the Incoming Digi tal Signal (Fixed Mode) ■ Fixed Mode ` Off : The format is dete cted au tomatically. If no digital input signal is present, the corresponding analog input is used instead. ` PCM : Only 2-channel PCM format input signal s will be heard.
42 En Menu HDMI Setup ■ HDMI Ctrl (RIHD) ` Off ` On Turn this setting on to allow p -compatible components connected via HDMI to be controlled by the AV receiver ( ➔ page 57 ). Note • When set to “ On ” and close the menu, the name of connected p -compatible components and “ RIHD On ” are displayed on the AV receiv er.
43 En ■ LipSync ` Off ` On This function allows the AV receiver to automatically correct any delay between the video and the audio, based on the data from the connected monitor. Note • This function wor ks only if your HDMI-compatible TV su pports HDMI Lip Sync.
44 En Late Night Funct ion ■ Late Night For Dolby Digital and Dolby Digital Plus sources, th e options are: ` Off ` Low : Small reduction in dynamic range. ` High : Large reduction in dynamic range. For Dolby TrueHD sources, the options are: ` Auto : The Late Night function is set to “ On ” or “ Off ” automatical ly.
45 En Controlling Other Compon ents iPod/iPhone Playback via Onkyo Dock RI Dock With the RI Dock, you can easily play the music stored on your Apple iPod/iPhone thro ugh the AV receiver and enjoy great sound, and watc h iPod/iPhone slideshows and videos on your TV.

47 En Controlling Other Onkyo Components You can use the AV receiver’s remote controller to control your other Onkyo AV compon ents. This section explains how to enter the re mote control code (with the default underlined) for a com ponent that y ou want to control: DVD, CD, etc.
48 En You can reset a REMOTE MODE to its default remote control code. You can reset the remote contro ller to its default settings. By pressing REMOTE MODE that’s been programm ed with the remote control code for your component, you can control Onkyo component as below.
49 En Note • With some components, certain buttons may no t work as expected, and some may not work at all. ✔ : Available buttons *1 The p function is not supp orted. The p supported by the AV receiver is the CEC system control function of the HDMI standar d.
50 En Appendix Troubleshooting If you have any trouble using the AV receiver, look for a solution in this section. If you can’t resolve the issue yourself, contact your Onkyo dealer.

54 En Connection Tips and Video Signal Path The AV receiver supports seve ral connection formats for compatibility with a wide range of AV equipment. The format you choose will depend on the formats supported by your com ponents. Use the followi ng sections as a guide.
55 En USB Features • USB mass storage device class (but not always guaranteed). • FAT16 or FAT32 file system format. • Each folder may contain up to 255 music files and folders, and folders may be nested up to 8 levels deep. • USB hubs and USB devices with hub functions are not supported.
56 En About HDMI Designed to meet the inc reased demands of digital TV, HDMI (High Definition Multimedia Interface) is a new digital interface standard for conne cting TVs, projectors, Blu -ray Disc/DVD players, set- top boxes, and other video components.
57 En Using an RIHD-compatible TV, Player, or Recorder p , which stands for Remote Interact ive over HDMI, is the name of the sy stem control function found on Onky o components. The AV receiver ca n be used with CEC (Co nsumer Electroni cs Control), wh ich allows system control o ver HDMI and is part of the HDMI standa rd.
58 En ■ How to connect and setup 1 Confirm the connecting and setting. 1. Connect the HDMI OUT jack to the HDMI input jack of the TV. 2. Connect the audio output from the TV to the OPTICAL IN 2 jack of the AV receiver using an optical digita l cable.
