12 1 Basic Operations Display There are two types of screens shown: Print screen (for disp laying printer statu s) and Menu screen (for configuring settings). Note • The message displayed di ffer s according to the options i nstalled and setting sta tus.
1.2 Switching On and Of f the Power 13 1.2 Switching On and Off the Power Switching On the Power 1. Press the power switch of the printer to the < > position. 2. When the power is on, “Please wait...” will be displayed on the control panel. Check that this display changes to “Ready to print”.

Loading Envelopes You have to clo se the flaps of the envelope s a nd load them with th e address side facin g up in the orientation shown in the diagra m below.

Important • T ransparenci es with white frames or full -color transp arencies cannot be used. The way to load transp arencies in the paper tray is the same as the way to load sta ndard size paper .

The paper sizes that can be set on this printer are as follows: Important • Print quality on the p art of the p aper that extends beyond 356 mm canno t be guaranteed.
24 2 Printing Setting Custom Paper Sizes Before printing, set the custom size on the printer dr iver. You have to configure the settings on the control pan el too when loading custom size pap er in trays 1 to 4 for printing. Fo r details on se tting the control panel, refer to “3.

28 2 Printing Configuring Secure Print The procedure to configure Se cure Print is as follows. First of all, carry out the secure print settings at the computer and send data to the printer for printing. Then, ca rry out the output pr ocedure at the printe r to output the print data.

First of all, carry out the proof p rint settings at the comp uter and send data to the pr inter for printing. Then, carry out the outpu t procedur e at the printer to output the print data.

2.7 Print at a S pecified T ime - Delayed Print 33 2.7 Print at a S pecified T ime - Delayed Print When the hard disk (optional) ha s been insta lled, you can use the delayed print feature. The delayed print feature allows you to store the data in the printer before hand and then print it out automatically at the specified time.

2.8 Direct Printing of PDF Files 35 2.8 Direct Printing of PDF Files You can send a PDF file direc tly to the printer for pr inting withou t using the printer driver. As the print data is sent directly to the printe r, the printing process is simpler than p rinting with the printer driver and it is don e at a faster sp eed.

38 2 Printing 2.10 Printing via Electronic Mail - E-mail Printing When the hard disk (optional) has been installed and the printer is connected to a network, enabling it to receive e-mails via TCP/IP co mmunication, e- mails can be sent from the computer to this printer.

42 2 Printing Receiving and Printing E-mails This printer allows you to receive and print e-mails man ually using the control panel. 1. Press the < > button. 2. Press the < > or < > button until [Mail Print] is dis played. 3. Press the < > button.
3.1 About Paper 43 3 About Paper 3.1 About Paper Using unsuitable pape r may lead to paper jams, poor p rint quality, breakdown and damage to your printer. In or der to use the features of this printer effectively, we suggest using only paper that is recomme nded here.

3.1 About Paper 45 Special Media The following types of paper can be used for prin ting on this printe r. These types of paper are called special media. 3.2 Loading Paper 47 Storing and Handling Paper Even for su itable papers, poor stora ge conditi ons may le ad to a change in the paper quality, paper jams, poor print quality and machine breakdo wn.

50 3 About Paper 3. 3 Setting Custom Paper Sizes To print on custom size paper loaded in trays 1 to 4, you must set the paper size on the control panel. You may also n eed to set it on the printer d river, depending on the paper size. This section explains how to se t the size on the control panel.

52 4 Settings on the Control Panel 4 Settings on the Control Panel 4.1 Overview of the Common Menu Menu Configuration There ar e two type s of menus : common menu and mode me nu. The common menu is the menu from which you can set the common items for all print modes.

54 4 Settings on the Control Panel Changing Menu Settings Basic Operations Press one of the following buttons to display the menu screen or set the printe r by browsing though each menu s tructure.
4.1 Overview of the Common Menu 55 Example: Changing the Low Power/Sleep Mode Settings This section describes how to set the common menu. In this example, you set the transitional time to the low power mode to 15 minutes and the time to th e sleep mode to 30 minutes.

4.2 Description of Menu Items 59 Print Mode Sets whether to have high quality or high speed. [Normal] (default) Select this to print documents at normal speed and nor mal quality. [High Quality] Selecting this decreases p rinting speed but prints images at high quality.

4.2 Description of Menu Items 61 Quantity Specifies the copies to be printed be tween 1 to 999. The default is [1 Sets]. ImageEnhance Selects whether to p erform image e nhancement. Image enhancement is a featur e that makes the boundary line between bl ack and white smoother to decrease jags and enhance the visual appearance.
62 4 Settings on the Control Panel Admin Menu The [Admin Menu] is used for the ne twork/port settings, system setting s (for alarm , Power Saver mode, and ma chine clock, etc.), pr inter settings, allocate memory settings, initialization of printer setti ng values and hard disks, and for m data deletion settings.
4.2 Description of Menu Items 63 n Auto Eject Time *3 (refer to P. 83) Sets the time interval for the pr inter to automatically print the remaining data when no furthe r data is rece ived for a continuo us period. The time can be set between 5 to 1275 seconds in incre ments of 5 seconds.

[Auto] (def ault) Select this to make the printer au tomatically detect the printer lang uage being used in the data received from a computer and perform printing based on the d etected data.
70 4 Settings on the Control Panel Port9100 Select this to use Port9100. n Port Status Specifies whether to enable or disabl e the Port9100 port when the printer tu rns on. The default is [Enable], which means the Port9100 por t is available. Note • T o enable the Port9100 port, the IP address must be set.
4.2 Description of Menu Items 71 UPnP Makes settings for UPnP (Universal Plu g and Play). n Port Status Specifies whether to enable or disabl e the UPnP when the printer turns on. The defa ult is [Disable]. Important • If the memory is running out when the port is enabled, the port may be disa bled automatically .

4.2 Description of Menu Items 73 n Primary IP, Secondary IP *3 (refer to P. 83) These items are used to check the addre sses that ha s been aut omatically ob tained or t o set the addresses manually. Enter the address in the format of xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx.

4.2 Description of Menu Items 75 Sleep Mode The Sleep mo de is a featur e that reduc es the printer’s power co nsumption more effectively than Low Power mode. Th is item specifies whether to us e this feature. The default is [Enable]. Note • If [Disable] is set for [ Low Power Mode], you cannot set [Disable ] for [Sleep Mode].

4.2 Description of Menu Items 77 Printer Settings [Printer Settings] menu is used to make se ttings for paper trays such as the auto tray selection feat ure. Substitute T ray Specifies whether to print on paper loade d in another tray when there is no paper left in the tray selected by the auto tray selection feature.

80 4 Settings on the Control Panel Buffer Size For each inte rface, spe cify the memo ry capacit y of the receiv e buffer (i n which the da ta sent from a computer is saved temp orarily). For LPD, SMB, and I PP, specify the availability of spool process ing, location s, and memory cap acity.
4.2 Description of Menu Items 81 [Memory] Select this to perform s pool proces sing. This uses the memory as the receive buffer for spool process ing. If you select this option, specify the receive buffer m emory cap acity for sp ool process ing between 0.
82 4 Settings on the Control Panel Hard Disk Select this to initialize the ha rd disk (optional). The data to be deleted during initialization includes the additional fonts, th e HP-GL and HP-GL/2 forms, the ESC /P user definition data, and SMB folders.

5.1 When Paper Jams 89 5 T roubleshooting 5.1 When Paper Jams CAUTION • When removing jammed p aper , make sure that no pieces of torn p aper are lef t in the machine.
90 5 T roubleshoot ing Inside Cover A Follow the procedur e below to remove any ja mmed paper when the con trol panel displays the following messages: “Paper Jam Op en Cover A” or “Remove cartridge Clear jam” 1. Open cover A, and holding the drum/ton er cartridge by the gr ip, remove it from the printer (1).
5.2 When Problems Occur 91 5.2 When Problems Occur Before treating the prob lem as a machine breakdown, re fer to the following table an d check the printer condition again. W ARNING • Never open or remove machine covers that are secured with screws unless specifically instructed in the user guide.
92 5 T roubleshoot ing Cannot print. Is the light of t he <READY> indicator of f? If so, thi s printer is of fline or in menu setti ng mode. Fix the problem accordin g to the following display st atus: •“ O f f - l i n e ” Press the <ON LINE> button to exit the of f-line mode.
5.2 When Problems Occur 93 Although no print job is sent, the message “Print ing” is displayed on the control panel (when using the parall el interface). Did you switch o n the power of the co mputer aft er switching on the power to the printer? Pressing the <CANCEL> button cancel s the printing.
94 5 T roubleshoot ing Paper cannot be fed. Paper jam. Multiple pa pers are fed. Papers are fed at an angle. Paper is wr inkled. Is the pape r correctly set? Load the p aper correctly . For labels, transparencie s or envelopes, fan th em well first to allow ai r to enter between each sheet before loading.
5.2 When Problems Occur 95 Envelope is wrinkled. Envelopes can get wrinkled dependi ng on the type used. Open cover B of this pri nter and lif t up the levers at both ends of the fus er unit. The wrinkles can be reduced. After printi ng the envelope, remember to return the levers to the ir original positions.
96 5 T roubleshoot ing 5.3 When the Print Quality is Poor When the print quality is poor, select the closest symptom from the following table to rectify the problem. If the print quality does not improve after ca rrying out the ap propriate action, contact our Printer Support Desk.
