11 Basic Operations Introduction Help Displays Press g ( j ) when M is displayed at the lower right of the menu screen to view a description of the currently selected menu option. To return to the original menu, press g ( j ) again. Shutter-release B utton The camera features a two-stage shutter-release button.
12 First Steps First Steps Charging the Batter y The camera uses a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL11 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Char ge r MH-64 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. It is recommended to charge the batter y wi thin six months after it is first used ( A 135).
13 Charging the Battery First Steps The CHARGE lamp status and description of eac h status are as follows. 3 Unplug the charger. Remove the battery and unplug the charger. B Note on the Battery Charger Be sure to read and follow the warnings for th e ba ttery charg er on pages iii and iv before usin g the battery char ger.
14 First Steps Inser ting the Battery Insert a Rechargeable Li-i on Battery EN-EL11 (supplied) that has been fully charged, using the Battery Charger MH -64 (supplied), into your camera. 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 2 Insert the battery.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. To eject the battery, turn the orange battery latch in the direction shown 1 .
16 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T i me A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) wi ll light for a moment and the monitor will tu rn on.

22 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash and self-timer l amp. When taking pictures in “tall” orientation, turn the camera so that the built-in flash is above the lens.
23 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Digital Zoom When the optical zoom is set at the teleph oto end, i.e. at maximum magnification, holding down g triggers digital zooming. The subject is magnified up to a max. optical zoom ma gnification of 4 ×.
24 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When people's faces (front view) are recognized: Camera will focus on t he face surrounded by a double border. Once focus has been locked the double border will glow green.

C Power on by pressing c If the c is pressed continuous ly while the power is OFF, the p ower will be s witched ON and playback mode will be started up.
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.3-3.5 m (1-11.5 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom applied, the range is 0.6-2.2 m (2 -7.2 ft.) (when ISO sensitivity is set to Auto ).

31 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 10 cm (3.9 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 30 cm (11.8 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press the multi selector o (exposur e compensation). The exposure compensa tion guide is displayed.

50 More on Playback T aking a Closer L ook: Pla yback Zoom Pressing g ( i ) during full-frame playback mode ( A 26) zooms the current picture, wit h the center of the picture displayed on the monitor. • The guide displayed in the right bottom in the monitor will show which part of the image is currently displayed.
51 More on Playback Editing Pic tures Use the COOLPIX S560 to edit pictures in-c amera and store them as separate files ( A 133). The editing features described below are available.
52 Editing Pictures More on Playback Enhancing Brightness and Contrast: D-Lighting D-Lighting can be used to create copies with enhanced brightness and contrast, brightening dark portions of a picture.

76 Making Voice Recordings Voice Recordings Operations During Recording * The copied files can be play ed back using QuickTime or a ny other WAV-compatible audio player. Note that index points c reated with the camera cannot be used when voice recordings are played back on computers.

80 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to Televisions, Computers and Printers Connecting to a TV Connect the camera to a television using the supplied audi o video cable (AV cable) to play back pict ures on the television. 1 Turn off the camera.
81 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to a Computer Use the supplied USB cable to connect the camera to a comp uter, and copy (transfer) pictures to a computer with the supplied Nikon Transfer soft ware.
82 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Transferring Pict ures from a C amera to a Comp uter 1 Start the computer to which Nikon Transfer was installed. 2 Turn off the camera. 3 Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
83 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers 5 Transfer pictures when Nikon Transfer has finished loading. Click Start Transfer in Nikon Transfer. At the default setting, all pictures are transferred to the co mputer.
