3 2. Battery ins tallation and charging Before you can use your new phone, you need to att ach and charge the battery . Attaching the battery To attach the batte ry , place it on the back of the ph one as shown and s lide it towa rd the top of the phone u ntil it click s into place.

6 3. About the phone, keys and menu Power key Y ou can use t he power key to: • turn the phone on or off (press and hold ) • turn the ph one’s light s on for 15 se conds • sel ect a quick aler.
7 Clear key Use th e clear key to: • delete a charac ter to the left of the cursor • clear all cha racters from the display (press and hold) • return t o the previou s menu l evel • return fro.
8 Menu Y our phon e’s me nu allows you to easily acce ss the many powerful features in your phone. Scrol l ba r When you use your phone ’s menu, a scroll bar appears at the far right of the screen. This bar indi cates wh ere you ar e in the men u; each tab location on the bar represents a different menu item.
9 Menu sho rtcuts When you select a menu item, numb ers appear on the display above the scroll b ar . If y ou become familiar with these numbe rs, you c an use th em as shortcuts for acc essing different m enu items. For example, to access the Phon e sett ings menu, you can simply pre ss Menu 4 2.

11 Entering letters and numbers Curs or The cursor is a blinking vertical line tha t appears on the screen when you a re ent ering text or num bers. Chara cters you enter appear to the righ t of the cursor . Pressing the key dele tes the charact er to the left of the cu rsor .
12 There is an e xtra feat ure in y our phon e called Predic tive te xt input. For more information on this spec ial text writing feature, see page 57.
13 Keyguard (loc king the k eypad) The Keyguard feature allows you to lock you r phon e’s keypad so th at accident al keypress es have no effect. This is han dy when y our phone is in a pocket or purse. Note: K eygu ard is not a security featu re and will not preven t unauthorized use of your phon e.
14 Notes about K eyguard • When Keyguard is on, the on ly way to answer a call is to press Answe r . • When Keyguard is on, calls may be possible to t he emer- gen cy nu mbe r pr ogra mme d in to y our p hone (e.g . 91 1 o r other official em ergenc y number) .
15 4. Basic functions Turning the phone on or of f Press and hold the key for one second. Note: If the phone asks for a lock code, see ‘Lock code’ on page 62.

19 5. Settings This section describes some phone settings that allow you to customize your phon e to suit your pre ferences and that you probably won’t change v ery often.
20 Note: The order of the follo wing steps may vary , depending on which dialing sequence your card uses. 6 Enter acc ess number (usually the 1-800 numbe r listed on the back of the ca lling card), th en press OK . 7 Enter your card numb er and/or PIN, then press OK .
21 Clock Y our phone h as an internal clock that can be displayed on th e start screen. The clock must be s et in o rder for call times to be re corded (see ‘ Call lo g’ on page 4 1). If you rem ove the battery for long er than a couple of second s, the time will be lost.
22 Lights If you’re using your phone with a car kit, use Menu 4 2 4 to set your phone’s lights to On (lights stay on) or Automatic (after 15 sec onds, lights turn off until the next key is pressed, phone rings, etc.) . For information about turn ing your phone’s lights on at any time, see page 7.
23 • Press Menu 7 3 3 to turn off the time upda te. • Press Menu 7 2 2 to set th e time on your phone . Tones Use Menu 8, My tone s, to change t he six sound settings in your phone: ringing option, ringing tone, ringing volume, message alert tone, keypad tones, and w arning and game tones.
24 Ring ing v olum e Use Menu 8 3 to control the volu me of your phone’s ringing and of message alert tones. Note: If your phone does not ring loudly enough at maximum volume, try a different ringing tone; some tones are louder than others. Mess age ale rt to ne Use Menu 8 4 to c hoose the ton e playe d when y ou rece ive a text message.
25 Tip: Inst ead of us ing the scr oll ke ys, you ca n press the key repeatedly t o scroll t hrough this m enu. Aft er you r each t he set ting y ou want , pres s and hold the key . Note : If yo u ch oose Silen t or Quiet , the alarm clock will only sound a quiet beep.
26 Voice privacy Available only in digital networks, voice privacy encrypts the voice channel s o it is more difficu lt for anyone to eave sdrop on y our con ve rsati ons. Use Menu 4 4 1 to turn v oice privacy on or off. This feature ma y not be available in a ll areas; con tact your servi ce pro vider f or deta ils.
27 6. Emerg ency ca lls 1 If the phone is no t on, switch it on. 2 Press and h old the key fo r several se conds to rea dy the phone for calls. 3 Ke y in the em ergenc y number for your p resent locatio n (e.g. 9 1 1 or other official emergency number).
28 Emergency ke y 9 Use Menu 4 1 1 to tu rn on this fe ature. Whe n this feature is on, the phone attempts t o make an emergen cy call when you: • press and hold the 9 key , or • press 9 , then press Call . Note: When Keyguard is active , the only way to make an emerg ency call is to d ial the emergenc y number , then pre ss Call .
29 7. Adva nced func tions Network feature sett ing Call forwarding, call waiting, and send own num ber are network s ervices ava ilable through y our service provider . These features do not appear in your ph one’s Network serv ice s menu until you save the re lated featur e code(s) given to you by your service provider .
30 in-call menu, press while you are in a call, then press Options . Press to scroll to the first item in the m enu, or to scroll to the last ite m in the m enu. The in-call m enu is: Making/receiving multiple calls Making a new outgo ing call While you are in a call, se lect New c all from the in -call me nu.
31 Note: The wir eless netw ork d oes not suppo rt endin g in dividual call s when more th an on e call is in pr ogre ss. Call wa iting Call wait ing is a netw ork servic e that allow s you to re ceive an incoming call when you’re already in a call.
32 Call forwarding Call forwarding is a ne twork servic e that lets you forward your incoming calls to another phon e number. Check wit h your service provider for details and feature codes. Activatin g call fo rward ing Standard meth od To activate call forwarding, you mu st get the ca ll forwarding activation code from your se rvice provider .
33 1-touch dialing This feature a llows you to make p hone calls qu ickly and easily with the to uch of a button. Once you hav e assigned a pho ne number to a num ber key (2 thr ough 8), you ca n pres s and hold th at key to dial th e number . (Y ou can also p ress t he number key briefly and then press Call .
34 A number assignment module , or NAM, consists of a phone number and ne twork information th at the service prov ider programs into your phone. When you select a NAM, you ’re not only selecting a phone number , you’re also selecting a home system in w hich you will not be charged roaming fees.
35 Calling card ca lls Before you ca n make a call using a calling card, you have to enter your c alling card inform ation into th e phone. See ‘Calling card set-up’ on page 19.
36 T o switch fr om private to public If you are in a privat e system and want access to a public syst em , pre ss and hol d Menu when yo u ar e not in a c all. Y our phon e will display Sear ch pu blic sy stem s? Pres s OK and your phone will use the publ ic system for the next outgoing call.
37 Setting a utoma tic touch tone length Use Menu 4 2 1 2 to set the length of touch ton es sent automatically by the phone to Sh ort ( one tenth of a secon d) or Long (half a second). Saving touch tone string s Touch tone strings c an be used for sending an d receiving information w ith your phone .
38 8. Phone boo k Y our phone allow s you to save 100 phone numbers and associated names s o they are right at your fingertips for easy d ial ing . Saving names and numbers Saving a name and number is easy! Just en ter the phon e numb er , pres s or , then pre ss Save .
39 Not es a bou t sav ing nam es • A n ame may appea r onl y once in me mory . If yo u try to save a name that already exists in memory , the phone asks if you wan t to replac e the existi ng name. • If you try to save a phone numbe r and your phone book is full, you a re given t he option to re place an ex isting entry .
40 Editing names and numbers To edit phone book entries, press Men u 1 3, scro ll to the entry yo u want to edit, the n press Edit . Edi t t he n am e an d numbe r as need ed. Erasing names and numbers Use Menu 1 4 to erase entries from your phone book.
41 9. Call log For your co nvenienc e, the call log (Menu 3) saves a lis t of phone numbers you have diale d, and can show you how much time you have spent on the phone . If you subsc ribe to the caller I D network s ervice, the c all log also records the phone number s of misse d calls and received calls.
42 Viewing the missed c alls list at a ny time Use Menu 3 1 to view the mis sed calls list at any tim e. T o dial a number , press O ptions , then choose Call . Received calls If you su bscribe to the caller ID n etwork s ervice, your pho ne automati cally sto res the ph one nu mbers of the 10 most rece nt call s you’ve a nswered.
43 Last call is the duration of the last call , or current ca ll if applicable. All call s is the duration of all calls since the timers were last reset. Life ti mer displays th e duration of a ll calls for the life of your phone and cann ot be reset.
44 1 0. Voice messages V oice ma il is a net work service that allows callers to record a mes sage whe n you ca nnot be r eached . Y ou can t hen cal l your voic e ma ilbox and retrieve your me ssage s. Saving your voice mailbox number When you subscribe to voice mail, your service provider will give you a voice mailbox numbe r .
45 1 1. Text messages The text messag e network service a llows you to write, sen d, forward and reply t o text messages. Also, you can rece ive text mess ages from a variety of sou rces, such as a W eb page set up by your service provider . Note: The av ailability of te xt messages m ay vary according to your wireless service prov ider .
46 Reply provi des a s creen w here yo u can w rite a reply to a message. When you’ ve seen th e last ne w messa ge, the indicator disappears. About the In box The Inbox holds text messages that have not been deleted or saved . U se Menu 2 1 1 to access the Inbo x at any time.
47 Writing and sending text messages Y ou ca n writ e a tex t mess age usin g your keypad. Once you have wri tten a messa ge on you r scr een, you wi ll ha ve op tion s for sendin g your message. Note: Y our 5165 supports writing and sending t ext messages in English, Hebrew , P ortuguese and Spanish.
48 Send ing a text mes sage 1 Write a text message and press Options . 2 To s end the message, highlight Send and press OK . 3 Enter t he phone number ( or press Search to locate the number in th e phone book), th en press Send .
49 Forw ardin g a text m ess age 1 Highlight the message th at you w ant to forward. 2 Press Read , then press Options . 3 Scroll to Forward , press OK . 4 Scroll to eithe r As messa ge or As e-mail , p ress OK . 5 Send th e messag e as y ou normally would.
50 1 When your phone displays Bus iness card received , press Options . 2 Select Show and Press OK . 3 Scroll throug h the available information . Saving a viewed business card 1 After viewing the busine ss card, press , scroll to Save , then press OK .
51 12. E-mai l messages Y ou can use your p hone to send and receive e-mail messages. This means y ou no longe r need to be at your computer to send o r recei ve me ssa ges. Saving e-mail addresses Y ou can add an e-mail address to a name you already have in your phone book .
52 5 When pr ompte d E-mail addr ess , enter the e-mail address. To add special characters (@ and . ), press to get to the spec ial charac ter screen. 54 13. Extra features Alarm clock The alarm clock feature is based on your phone’s internal clock and sounds an alert at a time yo u specify . Setti ng th e alar m cloc k Use Menu 7 1 to turn the alarm clock on or off.
55 • T o shut off the alarm, press any key except Snooze . The phone displays K eep the phone on? Pres s Ye s to keep it on or to switc h it off. •I f y o u p r e s s Snooze , the phone turns itself off for 1 0 minutes , then the alarm sounds again.
56 Games Use Menu 6 to ch allenge y ourself or a friend to the three fun games in your phon e. To pause a game, press . T o resume, choose Contin ue . REMEMBER! Y our phone must be switched on to use this function. Do n ot switch on the pho ne when w ireless phone use is prohib ited or when it may cause in terference or dang er .
57 Predictive text input This featur e allow s you to write text messag es by pr essing e ach number key only once for each letter . Y our phone has a built-in dictionary that s earches for the co rrect wo rd. Y ou can add words (for e xample, th e name s that y ou use ofte n) into the dictionary .
58 If the wor d is not correct • Press repeatedly un til the desired word appears, then press to con firm it. OR • Press Options , scroll to Match es , th en press OK . Scrol l t o the correct word and press Use . • Press to confirm t he word and to e nter a space.
59 Prepaid service Y our servic e provider m ay offer prepaid servic e. This me ans that you can sign up to become a prepaid customer and obtain airtime by purchasing a Pre paid card which contains a repl enishm ent v alue. C ontac t yo ur ser vice pr ovider for details.
60 1 Press Menu and , then Selec t . 2 Select Save access ph one num bers . 3 When prompted for the balance num ber , enter the phone number given to you by your service provider . 4 Press OK . 5 When prompted for the replen ish number , enter the phone number giv en to you by yo ur service provider .
61 Zero balanc e on yo ur Prepaid account A zero balance on your Pre paid account during a call ends your call. A zer o balance on your Prepa id acco unt before a call pre vents both incoming an d outgoing calls. You may hear an audio notification about your zero balance wh en you try to make a call.
62 14. Security featu res Access codes overview Access codes consist o f the lo ck cod e and s ecurity code. When you get you r phone, you should change these codes from their defaults, write dow n the new codes, and keep them in a safe pl ace away from th e phon e.
63 Rest rict ing in co ming c alls Choose Rest rict incomin g calls to prevent your phone from receiving incom ing calls. Ent er your securit y code, th en press OK .
64 3 If you wa nt, give a name o f up to 1 0 chara cters to the restri ction (such as Joey , Long dist , or 1-800 #s ), th en press OK . The entry is added to your list of restricted numbers. Allow ing call s to a numb er on th e list If you later de cide to allow calls to a restri cted numbe r , press Select to see your list of n umbers.
65 Saving the unlocked phone number Use Menu 4 3 2 2 to save a numbe r that may be calle d even when y our phone is locked. You will be required to enter th e lock code . Callin g the unlock ed phone number Press or , or manual ly enter the number exactly as it is saved, then press Call .
66 15. Accessori es An ex ten sive rang e of acces sori es is available for your phone. You can se lect th e acc essories that best suit your s pecific comm unication needs. 67 Changing covers When changing covers, don’t use the phone’s antenna as leverage! 1 Switch off the powe r and disconnect the phone from the charger or any other device. 2 Using a coin, de press the colored tab on the top of the ph one and slide th e color cover forward.

71 LCH-9 Ra pid Cigaret te Lighter Ch arger The multivoltage Rapid Cigarette Lig hter Charger allows yo u to ch arge your phone when y ou travel . The small charger's functional design fits well w ith most car lighters and in teriors. Charging tim es are the same as for the Rapid T ravel Charger ACP-9U.
72 When the phone is charging, no lights are displayed on the stand; check the ch arging status of the phon e battery on the phone display . Charging m oves to th e rear s lot once the fron t battery is 1 00% charged. When the spare battery is ch arging, check the status indicator on the left sid e of the cha rging stan d.
73 16. Refer ence in formation Important safety information Traffic safety Do not use a hand-held telephone while driving a vehicle. If using a hand-held phone park the vehicle before conversing. Always secure the phone in its holder; do not place the phone on the passenger seat or where it can break loose in a collision or sudden stop.
