Page 2 Introduction Thank you f or your pu rchase of t he LS1M Scanne r. The LS1M Sca nner is a sca n tool t hat can retrie ve engine pa ramete rs and trouble c odes from GM vehi cle using the VPW OBD-2 protocol. That includes most GM cars & trucks from 1996 to 2006.

Page 4 Turn on the PDA with the power button, located on the top of the PDA. Find the LS1M icon: and tap it with the stylu s. The stylu s is tuck ed away near the b ack of th e PDA.
Page 5 Charging the PDA Your PDA ha s been fully charged be fore shippi ng, so it s houldn’t require any cha rging b efore first use. To rechar ge it, plug the USB cable in to the bottom connection on the PD A, and plug the oth er end into any USB port or to the PDA home charger.
Page 6 Using the Stylus For clicking buttons on a PDA, you use a stylus , which is just a plastic pointer. The stylus should be in its hold er on the back of the PDA.
Page 7 Create a new user named “LS1M” Select “USB” Click Next , and the I nstall. It m a y be necessary to reboot your computer after the installation is complete.
Page 8 Installing LS1M Synchronizer To enable you to save log s to text files on the PC, you must install LS1M Synchronizer. First install Palm Desktop as described a bove. If you already ha ve Palm Desktop install ed, verify it ’s version 4.1 or bet ter (select t o Help- >About Palm Desktop).
Page 9 and another dialog box “LS1M Sycnchro nizer” will pop up, wh ich is what you use to save logged data from the PDA to the computer. See “Exportin g Logs to the PC” on page 18. Resetting the PDA PDA’s are little computers, and like computers hang up some times, every once in a while the PDA can get “stuck”.
Page 10 Using LS1M Starting LS1M To start LS1M, click the “ho me” button until you see th e LS1M icon. Tap the LS 1M icon t o bring up the LS1M Main M enu. From this main menu, ta p any of t he buttons t o bring u p the screen y ou want t o use: • Scan: The basic scanning sc reen.
Page 11 Select which vehicle you int end to scan by clicki ng on th e appropriate box on the scre en, as s hown ab ove. (Note that support for the L67 is only available with a combo LS1/L6 7 cable. Cables purchased befor e July 2003 may not have the new chip installed.
Page 12 Scan To start the Scan screen, click the “Scan” button on the main menu. This will bring up Page 1 of the Scan screen. To start scanning, click the “Scan” butto n on the scree n, or press t he Page-Up button.
Page 13 The first page is filled with some of the most co mmon, basi c engine parameters, from temperatures & ignition advance, to fuel trims & O2 sensor values. The second pa ge is config ured for just ignition voltage. This can b e useful to determine the state of health of your battery.
Page 14 Page 5 has som e of the diag nostic parameters. MAF a nd MAFF show mass air flow sensor output. MISP and MISR are used for misfire diagnosis. MAP shows the manifold air pressure, while IAC shows the idle air controller position in coun ts, and TPSV shows the throttle position switch output i n volts.
Page 15 Pick a parameter from the drop-down list, pick a condition , then enter a value. In the example on the left, all scan s will be shown that contain ignitio n timing advan ce greater th an 25 degrees. In the example on the right, scans will be filtered starting when the throttle is over 90% op en and stopping when the SPD reaches 70 mph.
Page 16 Playing Back a Log On the mai n menu, click t h e Saved Lo gs button. All of your internally saved logs will appear in the list at the top. Click an entry to view the description. Click View to load the saved data into the Scan screen. Delete will dele te the currently selected entry.
Page 17 There are three lists that y ou can cycle b etween by cl icking the List 1, List 2 or List 3 chec k boxes. To modify t he list, click on a n item, and t hen cli ck Change to sel ect a new one . (These li sts are kept separate from the Scan screen , so any changes yo u make here only aff ect the Auto-Log screen.
Page 18 In this example, the en gine coolant tem perature reached a maxim um of 209.9 degrees F, the a verage intake air temperature w as 89.9 degrees F, and the maxim um vehicle speed was 39.3 MPH. Click on a paramet er name or t he word “Max” to change the display.
Page 19 Exporting Logs to the PC Once logs have been sav ed on the PDA, you can export them to files on your PC dur ing a hot-synch operation. This requires that Pal m Desktop 4.1 and the LS1M Synchron izer are both installed on your computer. See the sectio n below on Palm Desktop for installation instructions.
Page 20 EFILive format is for compatibility with the EFILive scan tool program. Note that if yo u selected metric units on the LS1M Config screen, then metric units will be saved to the log file by the synchronizer.
Page 21 Click the saved entry at the to p. Detailed information will be displayed in the bo ttom part of the screen. Use the scroll bar to the right of this data to page down & see all the collected cell values. The Clear Log button will erase all saved LTrim collections.
Page 22 Trouble Codes To go to the Trouble Codes screen, click the Trouble Codes bu tton on the Main Menu. From this screen you can scan for current and p ending tr ouble codes and reset the SES ligh t. Click the Scan button to scan for tr ouble codes.
Page 23 Gauge To go to the Gauge screen, cl ick the Gauge butto n on the Main Menu. The Gauge scree n is useful for a quick chec k in the car. The font is m uch bigger than t he Scan screen. Select a parameter (the little down arrow) to change it. Clic k the Clear button to clear all selected parameters.
Page 24 Sof tware Upgrades Updates to the LS1M software are free for the life of the s canner. Information on revisions will be available on the LS1M web site: http://www.LS1M.com The LS1M program, like most all PDA programs, consists of one file (LS1M.
Page 25 Click the “Add…” button & nav igate to the directory wher e the new LS1M.PRC is. Select the file LS1M.PRC and click “Done”. Now, the next time a hot-synch is performed , the new version of LS1M will be installed.
Page 26 Appendix Scan Parameters Please note that not every vehicle will support every parameter. For example, most V6-equ ipped vehicles do not have a passenger-side O2 sen sor; therefore, codes such as LFT2 & O2R will return “T.O.” (timeout).
