14 First Steps First Steps Inser ting the Battery Insert a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL12 (supplied) into the camera. • Charge the battery before first use or when the battery is runni ng low ( A 16). 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off ( A 19) and confirm th at the power-on lamp and the monitor are off before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. To eject the battery, open the bat tery-chamber/ memory card slot cover and slide the orange battery latch in the direction shown ( 1 ).
16 First Steps Charging the Batter y Charge the supplied Rechargeable Li-ion Battery EN-EL12 inserted into the camera, by connecting the suppli ed Charging AC Adapter EH-68P to the camera via the supplied USB Cable UC-E6, and th en plugging the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet.
17 Charging the Battery First Steps 4 Plug the Charging AC Adapter into an electrical outlet. • The camera’s charge lamp slowly blinks green to indicate that the battery is charging. • About 4 hours are requ ired to charge a f ully exhausted battery.
18 Charging t he Batte ry First Steps B Notes on Charging AC Adapter • Do not use the Charging AC Adapter EH-68P with any device th at is not supported. • Be sure to read and follow the warni ngs and cautions of “For Your Safety” ( A ii) thoroughly before using the EH-68P.
19 Charging the Battery First Steps Turning On and Off the Camera Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on. Press the power switch again to turn off the camer a. When the camera turns off, both the power-on lamp and moni tor will tu rn off.
20 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T ime A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. • The power-on lamp (gr een) will light for a moment and the monitor will turn on.

22 First Steps Inser ting Memory Cards Image, sound, and movie files are stored in the camera’ s internal memory (approx . 45 MB) or on removable memory cards (available separately) ( A 138).
23 Inserting Memory Cards First Steps B Formatting a Memory Ca rd If the message at the r ight is displayed when the camera is turne d on, the memory card must be formatted before use. Note that formatting ( A 129) permanently deletes all data on the memory ca rd.

25 Step 1 Turn the Camera On and Sel ect A (Auto) Mode Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Indicators Displayed in A (Auto) Mode The indicators and photo info displayed during shooting and playback will turn off after a few seconds ( A 123).
26 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 F rame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. • Hold the cam era steadily in both hands. Keep your fingers, hair, strap and othe r objects away from the lens, flash, AF-assist il lu minator, microphone and speaker.
27 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the Zoom Rotate the zoom control to activate optical zoom. Rotate in the direction of g to zoom in on the subject. Or rotate in the dir ection of f to have a wider view. A zoom indicator is displayed at the top of the monitor when the zoom control is ro tated.
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. • The camera focuse s when the shutt er-release butto n is pressed halfway ( A 13). • Camera automa tically selects the focus area (up to nine areas) containing the subje ct closest to the ca mera.

30 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 4 V iewing and Deleting Pictures Viewing Pictures (Playback Mode) Press the c (playback) button. • The last pictur e shot will be displayed in full-frame playback mode. • Rotate the rotary m ulti selector, or pres s H , I , J or K , to view additio nal pictures ( A 10).

C Pressing the c Button to Turn on the Camera When the camer a is off, hold ing down th e c button will turn the camera on in playback mode.
32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of about 0.5 to 8.0 m (1 ft. 8 in. to 26 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum op ti cal zoom applied, the range is about 0.5 to 4.0 m (1 ft. 8 in.
33 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B Shooting When Lighting is Poor and When the F lash is Disabled ( W ) • Use of a tripod is recommended to stabili ze the camera during shooting an d avoid the effects of camera shake.
34 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode T aking Pic tures with the Self- T imer The camera is equipped with a ten-s econd and two-second timer for self-portraits. When using the self-timer, use of a tripod is recommended. Set Vibration reduction ( A 125) to Off in the setup menu ( A 116) when using a tripod.
35 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro m ode is use d for taki ng pictures of ob jects as close as 2 cm (0 .8 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light the entire subject at distances of less than 50 cm (1 ft. 7 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
36 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter the e xposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press o (exposure compensation). • The exposure compensat ion guide and histogram are displayed.

49 Shooting in S cene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene Taking Pictures f or a Pan orama The camera focuses on the subject in the cente r of the frame. Use a tripod for best results. Set Vibration reduction ( A 125) in the setup menu ( A 116) to Off when using a tripod to stabilize the camera during shoo ting.
50 Shooting in Scene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene 4 Shoot the second picture. • Compose the next picture so that it overlaps the first picture. • Repeat until you have taken the necessary number of pictu res to comple te the imag e. 5 Press the k button when shooting is complete.

Subject tracking begi ns once you select a subject to be focused on, and the focus area will move and follow the subject.

In full-frame playback mode, just as with the normal playback mode, picture displays can be enlarged, pictures can be edited, and movies can be played back.

74 Editing Pictures More on Playback/In-Camera Editing Resizing Pictures: Sma l l Picture Create a small copy of the cu rrent picture. Small copies ar e stored as separate files with a compression ratio of 1:16.
75 Editing Pictures More on Playback/In-Camera Editing Creating a Cropped Copy: Crop Create a copy containing only the portion visi ble in the monitor when u is displayed with playback zoom ( A 60) enabled. Cropped copies are stored as separate files.
76 Movies Movies Recor ding Movies To shoot movies with s ound recorded via the built-in micropho ne, select shooting mode and follow the steps below. 1 Display the shooting-mode selection menu by pressing the A button in shooting mode, use the rotary multi selector to select D , and then press the k button.
77 Movies The Movie Menu Movie options and Autofocus mode ( A 77) settings can be cha nged in the movie menu. Press the d button in movi e mode to display the movie menu and use the rotary multi selector to modify and apply settings. D Selecting Movie Options The movie menu offers the options shown below.
78 Movies Movie Pla yback In full-frame playback mode ( A 30), movies are recognized by the movie opt ions ( A 77) icons. To play a movie, display it in full-frame playback mode and press the k button. Use the zoom control g or f during playback to adjust the volume.
79 Connecting to Televi sion s, C omputers and Printers Connecting to Televisions, Computers and Printers Connecting to a TV Connect the camera to a television using the supplied audio/video cable to play back pictures on the television. 1 Turn off the camera.
80 Connecting to Televi sion s, C omputers and Printers Connecting to a Computer Use the supplied USB cable to connect the camera to a comp uter, and copy (transfer) pictures to a computer with the supplied Nikon Transfer soft ware.
81 Connect ing to a Com puter Connecting to Televi sion s, C omputers and Printers Transferring Pictur es from the Camera to a Computer 1 Start the computer to which Nikon Transfer was installed. 2 Be sure that the camera is off. 3 Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
