26 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.5-4.0 m (19.7 in.- 13 ft. 1.5 in.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom applied, the range is 0.5-2.0 m (19.7 in.-6 ft. 6.7 in.
27 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode B The W (Off) Indicator Note the following when lighting is poor and the flash is off ( W ): • Place the camera on a flat, level su rface or use a tripod (recommended). • The E symbol is displayed w hen the camera automa tically incr eases sensitivity .
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode T ak ing Pictures with the S elf-timer The camera is equipped with a ten-second timer for self-portrait s. When using the self-timer, use of a tripod is recommended. 1 Press n (self-timer). The self-timer me nu is disp layed.
29 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 10 cm (3.9 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 50 cm (1 ft. 7.7 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
30 Basic Photography and Playback: Easy Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press o (exposure compensation). The exposure compensa tion menu is displayed.
31 Auto Mode Auto Mode Shooting in the Auto Mode In the A (auto) mode, you can set image mode, white balance, continuous shooting and color opti ons in the shooting menu , and take pictures. 1 Press the shooting mode button in shooting mode. The shooting-mode selection menu will be displayed.

The follo wing features are automatically activated: • Portrait: The portrait subject stands out clearly.

42 More on Playbac k More on Playback V iewing Multiple Pictures: T humbnail Pla yback Press f ( h ) in full-frame playback mode ( A 24) to display pictures in “conta ct sheets” of thumbnail images. The following operations can be performed while thumbnails are displayed.
43 More on Playbac k T ak ing a Clos er Look: Pla yback Zoom Pressing g ( i ) during full-frame playback mode ( A 24) zooms the current picture in 3×, with the center of the picture displayed in the monitor (Quick Playback Zoom). The guide at lower right shows which portion of the picture is enlarged.
44 More on Playbac k Editing Pic tures Use the COOLPIX L14 to e dit pictures in-camera and store them as separate files ( A 95). The editing features described below are available. C Picture Editing • Pictures taken at an image mode setting of [16:9] ( A 66) can not be edited .
45 Editing Pictures More on Playbac k Enhancing Brightness and Contrast: D-Lighting D-Lighting can be used to create copies with enhanced brightness and contrast, brightening dark portions of a picture.

48 Movies Movies Recor ding Movies To shoot movies with s ound recorded via the built-in micropho ne, select shooting mode and follow the steps below. 1 Press the shooting mode button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and use the multi se lector to choose D and press k .
49 Movies The Movie Menu [Movie options] setting can be ch anged from the movie menu. Press d in movie mode to display the movie menu and us e the multi selector to modify and apply settings. Selecting Movie Options The movie menu offers the options shown below.
50 The Movie Menu Movies Stop-Motion Movies Take a number of still pictures, at no specified interval, and join them for recording as a movie. Use to create a mo vie that simulates claymation. 1 Use the multi selector to choose [Movie options] > [Stop-motion movie] and press k .
51 Movies Movie Pla yback In full-frame playback mode ( A 24), movies are recognized by the movie mode icon. To play a movie, display it in full-frame playba ck mode and press k . The icon for the movie mode differs according to t he movie option ( A 49) selected in shooting.
52 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to Televisions, Computers and Printers Connecting to a TV Connect the camera to a television usin g the supplied A/V cable to play back pictures on the television. 1 Turn the camera off.
53 Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting to a Computer When the camera is connected to a co mputer using the supp lied USB cable, pictures recorded with the camera can be copied (transferred) to the computer for storage u sing the Niko n Transf er software .
54 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Transferring Pictur es from the Camera to a Computer 1 Start the computer to which Nikon Transfer was installed. 2 Turn off the camera. 3 Connect the camera to the computer using the supplied USB cable.
55 Connect ing to a Comp uter Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers 5 Transfer pictures when Nikon Transfer has finished loading. Click [Start Transfer] in Nikon T ransfer. At the default setting, all pict ures are transfe rred to the co mputer.

58 Connecting to a Printer Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Connecting the Camera a nd Printer 1 Turn off the camera. 2 Turn on the printer. Check printer settings. 3 Connect the camera to the printer using the supplied USB cable. 4 Turn on the camera.
59 Connecting to a Printer Connecting to Televi sion s, Computers and Printers Printing Pictures One at a Time After connecting the camera to the printer correctly ( A 58), print pictures by following the procedure below. 1 Use the multi selector to choose the desired picture and press k .

66 Shooting Options: The Shooting Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus A Image Mode Pictures taken with a digital camera are re corded as image files. The size of th e files, and with it the number of i mages that can be recorded, depends on the size and quality of the images.

72 Shooting Options: The Shooting Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus Restrictions on Camera Settings Restrictions apply to the following settings in A (auto) mode. Flash mode Flash turns off at [Continuous] settings of [Continuous], [Multi-shot 16] or [BSS].

83 Basic Camera Setup: The Setup Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus e Monitor Settings Choose whether or not to di splay informat ion in the monitor, and set the monitor brightness. Photo Info The following display options are available. See “The Monitor” ( A 6) for information on indicat ors in the monitor.
84 Basic Camera Setup: The Setup Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus f Date Imprint Date and time are imprinted on pictures. Da te can be pri nted from printers that do not support the date imprinting ( A 64) . At settings other than [Off], the icon for the current setting is displayed in the monitor ( A 6).

87 Basic Camera Setup: The Setup Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus l Format Mem ory/ m Format Card Use this option to format the in ternal memory or a memory card. Formatting the Internal Memory To format the internal memory, remove the me mory card from the camera.

90 Basic Camera Setup: The Setup Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus Setup Menu Others • Choosing [Reset all] als o clears the current fi le number ( A 95) from the memory. Numbering will continue from the lowest number av ailable. To re set file numbering to “0001”, delete all pictures ( A 76) before selecti ng [Reset all].
91 Basic Camera Setup: The Setup Menu Shooting, Playback and Setup Menus s Battery Type To ensure that the camera shows the correct battery level ( A 18), choose the type that matches the batteries currently in use. z Power saving The function for saving the battery po wer can be set to On or Off here.
