11 Basic Operations Introduction Help Displays Press g ( j ) when M is displayed at the lower right of the menu screen to view a description of the currently selected menu option. 12 First Steps First Steps Charging the Batter y The camera uses a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL11 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Char ge r MH-64 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. It is recommended to charge the batter y within six months after it was used.

14 First Steps Inser ting the Battery Insert a Rechargeable Li-i on Battery EN-EL11 (supplied) that has been fully charged, using the Battery Charger MH -64 (supplied), into your camera. 1 Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. 2 Insert the battery.
15 Inserting the Battery First Steps Removing the Battery Turn the camera off and make sure that the power-on lamp and the monitor have gone out before opening the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover. To eject the battery, open the bat tery-chamber/ memory card slot cover and slide the battery latch in the direction shown 1 .
16 First Steps Setting Display Language , Date and T i me A language-selection dialog is displayed the first time the camera is turned on. 1 Press the power switch to turn on the camera. The power-on lamp (green) wi ll light for a moment and the monitor will tu rn on.

Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash and self-timer l amp. When taking pictures in “tall” orientation, turn the camera so that the built-in flash is above the lens.
23 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Digital Zoom W h e n t h e c a m e r a i s z o o m e d i n t o t h e maximum magnification (5×), holding down g ( i ) triggers digital zoom. The subject is magni fied up to 4×, for a total magnification of 20×.
24 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 F ocus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When people's faces (front view) are recognized: Camera will focus on t he face surrounded by a double border. Once focus has been locked the double border will glow green.

C Power on by pressing c If the c is pressed continuous ly while the power is OFF, the p ower will be s witched ON and playback mode wi ll be started up.
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.3-4.7 m (1-15.4 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optica l zoom applied, the range is 0.6-3.1 m (2-10.2 ft.) (in high sensitivity mode).
29 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B The W (Off) Indicator Note the following when lighting is poor and the flash is OFF ( W ): • Place the camera on a flat, level su rface or use a tripod (recommended).
30 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode T aking Pictures with the S elf-timer The camera is equipped with a ten-s econd and two-second timer for self-portraits. When using the self-timer, use of a tripod is recommended. 1 Press n (self-timer). The self-timer me nu is disp layed.
31 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 10 cm (3.9 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 30 cm (11.8 in.). 1 Press p (macro mode).
32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter exposure from the value suggested by the camera to make pictures brighter or darker. 1 Press the multi selector o (exposur e compensation). The exposure compensa tion guide is displayed.
33 High Sensitivity Mode High Sensitivity Mode Shooting in the Hi gh Sensitivit y Mode In high sensitivity mode, sens itivity is increased when shoot ing under low lighting, to reduce blurring caused by camera sh ake or subject movement, allowing you to capture the atmosphere of the scene.

49 Editing Pictures More on Playback Enhancing Brightness and Contrast: D-Lighting D-Lighting can be used to create copies with enhanced brightness and contrast, brightening dark portions of a picture.

51 Editing Pictures More on Playback Creating a Cropped Copy: Crop This function is only available when u is displayed in the monit or with playbac k zoom ( A 47) enabled. Cropped copies are stor ed as separate files. 1 Press g ( i ) in full-frame playback mode to zoom in on the image.

63 The Movie Menu Movies Electronic VR Enable or disable electronic VR for movie recording. At settings other than Off , the electronic vi bration reduction icon is displayed in the monitor ( A 6). Autofocus mode Choose how the camera focuses in movie mode.

73 Connecti ng to Televisi ons, Comp uters and Pr inters Connecting to a Computer Use the supplied audio video/US B cable to connect the camera to a computer, and copy (transfer) pictures to a comp uter w ith the supplied Nikon Transfer software.

84 Creating a DPOF Print Order: Print Set Connecti ng to Televisi ons, Comp uters and Pr inters 5 Choose whether or not to also print shooting date and photo information. Choose Date and press k to print date of recording on all pictures in the print order.
