16 First Steps First Steps Charging the Batt ery The camera uses a Rechargeable Li -ion Battery EN-EL10 (supplied). Charge the battery with the Battery Char ge r MH-63 (supplied) before first use or when the battery is running low. 1 Connect the power cable.

23 Inserting Memory Cards First Steps Removing Memory Ca rds Before removing memory cards, turn the camera off and confirm that the power-on lamp and monitor are off. Open the battery-chamber/memory card slot cover and press the card in 1 to partially eject the card.

25 Step 1 Turn the Camera On and S elect A (Auto) Mode Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Indicators Displayed in A (Auto) Mode Tap A to change the information displayed in the monitor ( A 12). When the monitor has turned off in standb y mode to save power, press the power switch or the shutter-release button to reactivate it ( A 136).
26 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 2 Fr ame a Picture 1 Ready the camera. Hold the camera steadily in both hands, keeping your fingers and other objects away from the lens, flash, microphone, and speaker. When taking pictures in “tall” orientation, turn the cam era so that the built-in flash is above the lens.
27 Step 2 Frame a Picture Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the Zoom Use the zoom control to activate opti cal zoom. Rotate the zoom control to g to zoom in so that the subject fills a larger area of the frame, or f to zoom out, thus increasing the area visible in the frame.
28 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Step 3 Fo cus and Shoot 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway. When a face looking toward the camer a is recognized: Camera will focus on t he f ace surrounded by the double border active foc us area. When the su bject is in focus, the double border glows green.
29 Step 3 Focus and Shoot Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B During Recording While picture s are being recorded, the number of exposures remaining will blink. Do not open the battery-chamber/mem ory card slot cove r while pictures are being recorded.

32 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Using the F lash The flash has a range of 0.6-4.6 m (2-15 ft.) when the camera is zoomed out all the way. With maximum optical zoom app lied, the range is 0.6-2.5 m (2-8 ft.) (when ISO sensitivity is set to Auto ).
33 Using the Flash Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode B Shooting When Lighting is Poor and the Flash is Disabled ( W ) • Use of a tripod is recommended to stabili ze the camera during shooting an d avoid the effects of camera shake. • The E indicator is displayed when the camera automa tically increases sensit ivity.
34 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode T ak ing Pictures with the Self- timer The camera is equipped with a ten-s econd and two-second timer for self-portraits. This feature is useful for reducing the effects of camera shake that occurs when pressing the shutter-release button .
35 Basic Photography and Playback: Auto Mode Macro Mode Macro mode is used for taking pictures of objects as clo se as 10 cm (4 in.). Note that the flash may be unable to light enti re subject at distances of less than 60 cm (2 ft.). 1 Tap the macro mode control.

44 Shooting in Scene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene Shooting in Portrait/Night Portrait Scene Mode 1 Press the A button in shooting mode to display the shooting- mode selection menu and choose b (Portrai t) or e (Night portrait) ( A 36). The camera enters portrait or night portrait scene mode.
45 Shooting in S cene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene Portrait One-Touch Zoom When a face is recognized in Portrait or Night portrait scene mode, simply tap L to change the zoom position for the p.
46 Shooting in Scene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene 3 Frame the picture. The camera can focus at distances as close as 10 cm (4 in.) at the wide-angle zoom positio n at which F and the zoom indicator glow green (the zoom indicator is before G ). The closest distance at which the camera can focus varies depending upon zoom position.
47 Shooting in S cene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene Using the Draw Option Write a memo, or draw a picture, on the to uch panel display and save it as an image. The image is saved at an image size setting of TV screen (640 × 480). 1 Press the A button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and choose A (Draw) ( A 36).
48 Shooting in Scene Mode Shooting Suite d for the Scene Taking Pictures f or a Panora ma The camera focuses on the subject in the ce nter of frame. Use a tripod for the best results. 1 Press the A button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and choose p (Panorama assist) ( A 36).

Each time a picture is taken, the came ra automatically takes two consecutive shots. Of the two shots, the shot in whic h the subject’s eyes are open takes priority and is saved.

82 Movies Movies Recor ding Movies To shoot movies with s ound recorded via the built-in micropho ne, select shooting mode and follow the steps below. 1 Enter movie mode by pressing the A button in shooting mode and tapping D . The maximum length of the movie that can be recorded is displayed in the monitor.
83 Movies The Movie Menu Movie options and Electronic VR ( A 84) settings can be changed from the movie menu. Tap F in movie mode to display the movi e menu and tap the menu options to modify and apply settings. Movie Options The movie menu offers the options shown below.
84 The Movie Menu Movies Electronic VR Choose whether to use electronic VR (vib r ation reduc tion) whe n shooting movies. At settings other than Off , the icon for the current setting is displayed in the monitor ( A 9).
85 Movies Movie Playback In full-frame playback mode ( A 30), movies are recognized by the movie playback guide ( A 11). To play a movie, display it in full-frame playback mode an d tap the movie curre ntly displayed. Rotate the zoom control f or g to adjust the playback volume.
86 Voice Recordings Voice Recordings Making V oice Recor dings Audio voice recordings can be recorded ov er the built-in microphone and played back over t he built- in speaker. 1 Press the A button in shooting mode to display the shooting-mode selection menu and tap the scene mode control.
87 Making Voice Recordings Voice Recordings Operations During Recording * The copied files can be play ed back using QuickTime or a ny other WAV-compatible audio players. Not e that index po ints created with the camera cannot be used when voic e recordings are played back on computers.
