16 First Steps First Steps Charging the Battery The camera uses the supplied E N-EL5 recharge able lith ium-ion batte ry. Fully charge the battery with the supplied MH-61 ba ttery charger before first use or when th e bat tery is running low. Notes on the Battery Charger • The MH- 61 b atte ry ch arge r is fo r use with the EN-EL 5 bat ter y.
17 First Steps 2 Charge battery . Insert the bat tery into the charger a s illus- trated. • The C HARGE lamp starts blinking when the bat tery is co rrectly inse rted. Charging is complete when the lamp stops blink ing. • A new or fully exhausted battery will charge in app roximat ely 2 h ours.

20 First Steps Inserting Memory Cards Pictures can be stored in the camera’s intern al memory (approximately 23 MB) or o n an optio nal Secure Di gital (SD) memory card. If a memory card is inserted in the camera, p ictures will auto matically be stored on th e card and only the pi ctures s tored on it are play ed back or de- leted.

To reduce these brigh t reflections, set the flas h to B (Flash Canc el) or zoom in on the su bject.

32 Basic Photography and Playback Exposure Compensation Exposure compe nsation is used to alter the ex posure from the value s uggested by the camera. Exposure c ompensation can be set to values between –2.0 EV * (underexposure) and +2.0 EV (overexposu re) in increments of 1/3 EV.

53 Viewing Pictures on the Camera Playbac k Zoom While Quick playback z oom is in effect, press k ( v ) or j ( t ) to zoom the picture in or out. Pictures can be zoomed in to a ma ximum o f 10×. • When an image is zoomed in on, the zoom ratio is dis- played on the monitor.
54 Viewing Pictures on the Camera Creating a Cropp ed Copy When th e N : u icon is displayed in Quick playback zoom (P.52) or Playback zoom mode (P.53), you can crop part of a pict ure and save it as a separate file.
