1 About This Manual Introduction About This Manual Thank you for your purchase of Nikon Captur e 3. This install guide explains how to install and uninstall Nikon Capture 3 on your Windows or Macintosh computer , and how to connect your camera to your computer .
2 Introduction Overview This guide is divided into two main parts, one for Windows and the other for Macintosh computers. Windows This section explains how to install and uninstall Nikon Capture 3 on your Windows computer , and how to connect your camera to your computer .
3 This section explains how to install and uninstall Nikon Cap- ture 3, how to connect your camera and insert the camera memory card in a car d reader or PC car d slot, how to start Nikon T ransfer , and how to r egister the camera with the sys- tem.
4 Windows Installing Nikon Captur e 3 Under Windows Before installing Nikon Captur e 3, make sur e that your computer meets the following system requir ements. Windows XP Home Edition/Professional, Windows 2000 Pr ofessional Installing Nikon Capture 3 under a multi-user operating system r equires Administrator privileges.
5 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows When installing Nikon Capture 3, you can choose between Easy Install and Custom Install options. Earlier V ersions of Nikon Captur e and Nikon View Before you can install Nikon Captur e 3, you must uninstall any earlier versions of Nikon Capture or Nikon View .
6 Windows When the Nikon Capture 3 CD is inserted into a CD-ROM drive, the W elcome window will open automatically . The W elcome window contains three tabs: the Softwar e tab, the Custom Install tab, and the Customer Support tab. Clicking the Quit button will interrupt installation and close the Welcome window .
7 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows Easy Install The standard installation pr ocedure involves two steps: choosing the Easy Install option and installing the software.
8 Windows 2.2 — Install Quick T ime 5.0.2 Installation of QuickTime 5.0.2 opens with the dialog shown below . Leave the registration information blank and click Next . Follow the on-scr een instructions to complete installation and proceed to the next step.
9 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.3.2 — Personalize your copy of Nikon Capture 3 Enter your name and company (if applicable) to activate the Next button. Clicking Next will display a confirmation dialog; if the information you entered is corr ect, click Y es to proceed to the next step.
10 Windows 2.3.3 — Choose a location The folder to which Nikon Captur e 3 will be installed is shown in the Destination Folder area (the default location is …Program FilesNikonNCaptur e30). T o install to this folder , click Next . T o select a new folder , click the Browse… button and navigate to the desir ed location.
11 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.3.6 — Associate Nikon Capture 3 with image adjustment file extensions The dialog for image adjustment file extensions will be displayed. T o associate Nikon Capture 3 with the extensions for color balance settings (*.
12 Windows The default output color -space pr ofile can be changed at any time after installation in the Color Management tab of the Nikon Captur e 3 Editor or Nikon Capture 3 Camera Contr ol Prefer ences dialog.
13 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.3.8 — Complete installation of Nikon Capture 3 The following dialog is displayed when installation of Nikon Capture 3 is complete.
14 Windows 2.4 — Install Nikon V iew 5 Installation of Nikon View 5 begins with the license agreement shown in Step 2.4.1. 2.4.1 — Accept the license agreement After making sure that you have r ead and understood the contents of the agreement, click Y es to continue installation.
15 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.4.3 — Create a shortcut on the desktop When the Nikon View application files have been installed, the dialog shown below will ap- pear . Click Ye s to create a shortcut, allowing you to start Nikon View 5 dir ectly from an icon on the desktop.
16 Windows Custom Install The standar d installation procedure involves two steps: choosing the Custom Install option and installing the software. Step 1: Choose the Custom Install option Click the Custom Install tab and check the software you want to install.
17 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows Step 2: Complete installation T o begin installation of the selected software, click the Install button in the Custom Install tab. If more than one option is selected, the softwar e will be installed in the order listed.
18 Windows 2.1 — Install drivers If you selected PTP driver , Driver for COOLPIX 990/880 , or Driver for D1-series cameras , installation will begin with the selected drivers. The explanation that follows takes the driver for D1-series camera as an example.
19 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows If the Updater is displayed, complete the update by following the on-screen instructions. Do not restart your computer when the update is complete; instead, continue with installation. If the Updater dialog is not displayed, complete installation normally .
20 Windows Earlier V ersions of Nikon Captur e and Nikon View Before you can install Nikon Captur e 3, you must uninstall any earlier versions of Nikon Capture or Nikon View . 2.2 — Install Quick T ime 5.0.2 If you opted to install QuickTime 5.0.2, installation will open with the dialog shown below .
21 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.3.2 — Personalize your copy of Nikon Capture 3 Enter your name and company (if applicable) to activate the Next button. Clicking Next will display a confirmation dialog; if the information you entered is corr ect, click Y es to proceed to the next step.
22 Windows 2.3.6 — Associate Nikon Capture 3 with image adjustment file extensions The following dialog will be displayed. T o associate Nikon Capture 3 with the extensions for color balance settings (*.nca), tone curves (*.ncv), and other image adjustment settings files, click Y es (recommended).
23 Installing Nikon Capture 3 Under Windows 2.3.7 — Choose default color management settings T o use the color -space profile embedded in images opened in Nikon Captur e 3, choose (A) Use the color space of the file to be opened as working color space .
24 Windows 2.3.8 — Complete installation of Nikon Capture 3 The following dialog is displayed when installation of Nikon Captur e 3 is complete. Click Finish to proceed to the next step.

27 Connecting to a Computer COOLPIX Series (USB Interface) D100 (USB Interface) Connecting to a Computer If you are using a computer running Windows, make sure that you install Nikon Captur e 3 before connecting your camera to the computer for the first time.

29 Connecting to a Computer If Nikon T ransfer Does Not Start If Nikon T ransfer does not start, refer to Device Registration to confirm that the camera is r egistered as a device with your computer .
30 Windows Starting Nikon T ransfer under Windows XP The procedur e for starting Nikon T ransfer under Windows XP Home Edition/Professional dif- fers from that for other operating systems.
31 Connecting to a Computer D1-Series and COOLPIX990/880 Cameras The Autoplay window will not appear when one of the above cameras is connected; instead, the Nikon T ransfer window will appear automatically .
32 Windows Uninstall Uninstalling Nikon Capture 3 and Nikon View 5 This section describes how to uninstall the Windows versions of Nikon Capture 3 and Nikon View 5.
33 Uninstall Windows XP Home Edition/Professional, Windows 2000 Pr ofessional Uninstalling Nikon Capture 3 and Nikon View 5 under a multi-user operating system r equires Administra- tor privileges.
34 Windows Device Registration If you connect a supported digital camera to a Windows computer after installing Nikon Cap- ture 3 and r estarting the computer , W indows will automatically identify the camera as a new device and register the camera with the system.
35 Device Registration: D100/COOLPIX-Series Camer as D100/COOLPIX-Series Cameras Windows XP Home Edition/Professional The following explanation uses D100 as an example. After installing Nikon Capture 3 and r estarting the computer , connect your camera to the computer using a USB cable and turn the camera on .
36 Windows Device registration is now complete. Click OK to close the System Properties dialog. Step 3 Confirm that Nikon Digital Camera USB Device , Generic V olume , and USB Mass Stor - age Device are listed r espectively under Disk drives , Storage volumes , and Universal Se- rial Bus controllers .

43 Device Registration: D100/COOLPIX-Series Camer as Reinstalling the Device Driver — Windows 98 Second Edition (SE) If NIKON D100 is listed under Other devices , you will need to reinstall the device driver . Step 1 Double-click the NIKON D100 listing under Other devices .
44 Windows Step 5 The dialog shown at right will be displayed. Click Next . No Driver Found If a message is displayed stating that Windows was unable to find a suitable driver , this may indicate that the Nikon Capture 3 CD was not correctly inserted in the CD-ROM drive or that the appropriate check box was not selected.

100 Macintosh Installing Nikon Captur e 3 on a Macintosh Before installing Nikon Captur e 3, make sur e that your computer meets the following system requir ements. Mac OS X The administrator password is r equir ed when installing Nikon Capture 3 under Mac OS X.
101 Installing Nikon Capture 3 on a Macintosh Software Check the desired items and click Install . The selected software will be installed in the or der listed.
102 Macintosh Step 2: Install software Click Install to begin installation of the software selected in the Softwar e tab. If more than one item is selected, the software will be installed in the or der listed. 2.1 — Install Nikon Capture 3 If you opted to install Nikon Capture 3, it will be installed first.
103 Installing Nikon Capture 3 on a Macintosh The ReadMe file will be displayed. T ake a few moments to view this file, which may contain important information that could not be included in the manual. After viewing the ReadMe file, click Continue… .
104 Macintosh 2.1.5 — Start the installer Click Install in the Nikon Capture Installer dia- log to begin installation of Nikon Captur e 3.
