X 4 The M od e D i al The camera offers a choice of the following shooting mo des and g mode: P , S, A, and M Modes Select these modes for full control over camera settings.
5 X The Release -Mode Selec tor Use the rel ease -mode selector to ch oose from the follo wing relea se mode s: 8 Single frame One photo is taken each time the shutter-release button is pres sed. X 8 The C ommand Dial The command dial can be used with other controls to adjust a var iety of sett ings when shooting information is displayed in the monitor . X 12 Usi ng Cam era M en us The multi selec tor and J button are used to navigate the camera menus. F o llow the steps below to n avigate the menus. 1 Display the menus. Press the G button to display the menus. 2 Highlight the icon for the curr ent menu.

14 X F irst Steps Charge the Battery The camera is power ed by an EN-EL14 re chargeable Li-ion battery (sup plied). To maximize shooting time, charge the batter y in the supplie d MH-24 batter y charger before use . About 1 hour and 3 0 minutes are required to fully recharge the batter y when no char ge remains.

X 18 Basic Setup A language-selection dialog will be display e d the first time the camera is turned on. Choose a language and set the time and date . Photographs can not be take n until you have set the time and date . 1 Tu r n t h e c a m e r a o n .
19 X A The Setup Menu Language and date/time settin gs can be changed at any time using the Language ( 0 14 0) and Time z one and date ( 0 139) options in the setup menu.
X 20 Inser t a Memory Card The camera stores pictures on S ecure D igital (SD) memor y cards (available separat e ly; 0 177). 1 Tu r n t h e c a m e r a o f f . 2 O pen the card slot cover . Slide the card slot cov er out ( q ) and open the card slot ( w ).

X 22 Adjust V iewfinder F ocus The camera is equipped with diopter adjustment to accommodate individual differ ences in vision. Check that the display in the viewfinder is in f ocus before framing pictures in the viewfinder . 1 Remove the lens cap . 2 Tu r n t h e c a m e r a o n .
23 s s Basic Photograph y and Pla yback This section describes how to take photog raphs in i (auto) mode, an automatic “point-and-shoot” mode in which the majority of settings are controlled by the camera in response to shooting condit ions, and in which the flash will fir e automati cally if the subjec t is poorly lit.
24 s 3 Check the number of exposur es remaini ng. The information displa y and viewfinder show the number of photographs that can be stored on the memor y card (values over 1,000 are rounded down t o the near est hundred; e .g., valu es between 1,200 a nd 1,299 are shown as 1.
25 s Step 3: F rame the Photogr aph 1 Ready the cam era. When framing photographs in the viewfinder , hold the handgrip in your right hand and cradle the camera body or le ns with your left. Keep your elbows propped lightly against y our torso for support and place one foot half a pace ahead of the other to keep y our upper body stable.
26 s Step 4: F oc us 1 Press the shutter-release button halfway . Press the shutter-release button halfway to focu s. The camera will selec t the focus points automatically . If the subject is poorly lit, the flash may pop up and the AF-assist illuminator ma y light.
27 s A The Shutter-Release Button The camera has a two-sta ge shutter-release button. The camera f ocuses when the shutter- relea se button is pr essed halfwa y.
28 s Cr eativ e Photogr aphy (Sc ene Modes) The camera offers a choice of “sc ene” modes. Choosing a scene mode automatically optimizes setting s to suit the selected scene, making creative photograph y as simple as selecting a mode, framing a picture , and shooting as described on pages 23–27.
29 s p Child Use for snapshots of children. Clothing and background details are vividly render ed, while skin tones remain soft and natur al. m Spor ts F ast shutter speeds freeze motion for dynamic sports shots in which the main subject stands out clearly .
30 s Basic Play back Photographs are automatically display e d for about 4 s after shooting. If n o photograph is display ed in the monitor , the most recent picture can be viewed by pressing the K button. 1 Press the K button. A photograph will be displa yed in the monitor .
31 s Deleting Un wanted Photogr aphs T o delete the ph otograph currently displayed in the monitor , pr ess the O button. Note that photogr aphs can not be rec overed onc e deleted. 1 Display the photogr aph. Display the photograph y o u wish to delete as described on the preceding page.

33 ! ! Guide Mode Guide mode gives access to a variety of frequently-used and useful functions. The top level of the guide is display ed when the mode dial is rotated to g . Th e G u i d e Choose from the following items: Shoot View/delete Set up T ake pictures.
34 ! Guide Mode Menus T o access these menus, highlight Shoo t , V iew/delete , or Set up and press J . ❚❚ Shoot “Star t Shooting” T o start sh ooting, highlight Star t shooting and press 2 . The options shown below at right will be displayed.

37 x x Liv e Vie w F o llow the steps below to take photographs in live view . 1 Rotate the live view switch. The mirror will be raised and the view through the lens will be displa yed in the camera monitor . The subject will no longer be visible in the viewfinder .
x 38 2 Choose a focus mode. Press the P button and use the multi selector to high light the curren t focus mode in the monitor . Pr ess J to display the foll owin g op tio ns. Highlight an option and press J . The description in Steps 3, 4, and 5 assumes that AF-S or AF-F is selec ted.

x 42 A Flic ker Y ou may notice flicker or banding in the monitor during live view or when shooting movies under cer tain types of lighting, such as fluo rescent or mercury-vapor lamps. Flic ke r an d banding can be reduced by choosing a Flick er reduc tion option that matches the frequency of the local A C power supply ( 0 1 39).
43 x D Using A utofocus in Live V iew Autof ocus is slower in live view and the monitor may brighten or darken while the camera focu ses. The camera may be unable to f ocus in the following situations.

45 y y Recording and Vi ewing Mo vies Movies can be recorded in live view mode. 1 Rotate the live view switch. The mirror is raised and the view through the lens is displayed in the monitor instead of the viewfinder . 2 Choose a focus mode. Press the P button and select a focus mode as described in Step 2 of “Live View“ ( 0 38).
y 46 5 Star t recording. Pr ess the movie -rec ord button to star t recor ding (the camera can recor d both video and sound; do not cover the microphone on the front of the camera during recording). A recor ding indicator and the time available ar e displayed in the monitor .

55 z z More on Photograph y (All Modes) This section describes the fo cus options available when photographs are framed in the viewfin der . F o cus can be adjusted automatically or manually (see “Focus Mode, ” below).
56 z 3 Choose a focus mode. Highlight a focus mode and press J . To r e t u r n to shooting mode, pr ess the shutter-release button halfway. D Continuous-servo Autofocus In AF-C mode or when continuou.
57 z D The AF-Assist Illuminator If the s ubject is poorly lit, the AF-assist illuminator will light automatically to assist the autofocus operation when the shutter- release button is pressed halfway .
58 z AF-Ar ea Mode Choose how the focus point for autofo cus is selected. A AF-Area Mode The AF-area mode used when photographs are framed in th e viewfinder can also be selected using the AF-area mode > Vi ew f i nd e r option in the shooting me nu ( 0 131).
60 z F ocus Poin t S election In manual focus mode or wh en autofocus is combined with AF-area modes other than e ( A uto -area AF ), you can choose from 11 focu s points, making it possible to compose phot ographs with the main sub j ect almost anyw here in the frame.
61 z 2 Lock focus. AF-A and AF-C f ocus modes : With the shutter-release button pressed halfway ( q ), press the AE-L/AF-L button ( w ) to lock b oth focus and exposu re (an AE-L icon will be display ed in the viewfinder; 0 80).
62 z Manual F ocus Manual f ocus can be used when y ou are not using an AF-S or AF-I lens or when autofocus does not produc e the desired results ( 0 56). 1 Set the lens focus-mode switch. If the lens is equipped wi th an A -M or M/A-M switch, slide the switch to M .
63 z ❚❚ The Elec tronic R angefinder If the lens has a maximum aperture of f/5.6 or fa ster , the viewfinder focus indicator can be used to con firm whether th e subject in the selec ted focus poin t is in fo cus (the focus point can be selected from an y of the 11 focus points).
64 z Image Quality and Size T o gether , image qualit y and size determine how much space each photograph occupies on the memory card. Larger , higher quality images can be printed at larger sizes but also require more memor y , meanin g that fewer such images can be st ored on the memor y card ( 0 187).
65 z 3 Choose a file type. Highlight an option and press J . To r e t u r n t o shooting mode, press the shutter-release butt on halfway . A NEF (RA W ) Images Note that the option selected for image size does not aff ec t the size of NEF (RA W ) or NEF (RA W ) + JPEG images.

70 z A Shutter Speeds A vailable with the Built-in Flash Shutter speed is restricted to the following ra nges when the built-in flash is used: Mode Shutter spee d Mode Shutter speed i , p , n , P , A .
71 z ISO Sensitivit y “ISO sensitivity ” is the digi tal equivalent of f ilm speed. Choose from se ttings that range from a value roughly equivalent to ISO 100 to one roughly equivalent to ISO 3200 in st eps equivalen t to 1 EV .
72 z A AU TO If the mode dial is rotated t o P , S , A , or M after AU TO is selected for ISO sensitivity in another mode, the ISO sensitivity last selected in P , S , A , or M mode will be restored. A Hi 1/Hi 2 Pictures taken at these settings are more like ly to be subject to noise (randomly-spaced bright pixels, f o g, or lines).
73 t t P , S, A, and M Modes P , S , A , and M modes offer differ ent degrees of contro l over shutter speed and aperture: Shutter Speed and Aper ture Mode Description P Programmed auto ( 0 74) Camera sets shutter speed and aperture for optimal exposure.
74 t Mode P (Pr ogrammed Auto ) In this mode, the camera automatically adjusts shutter speed and aperture f or optimal exposure in most situations. This mode is recommended f o r snapshots and other situations in w hich you want to leave the camera in charge of shutter spe ed and aperture .
75 t Mode S (Shutter-Priority Auto ) In shutter-priority auto , you choose the shutter speed while the camer a automatically selects the aper ture th at will produce the optimal exposure. Use s low shutter speeds to suggest moti on by blurring moving subjects, fast shutter speeds to “freeze ” motion.
76 t Mode A ( Aper ture -Prio rity Auto ) In aperture-priority auto , you choose the aperture while the ca mera auto matically selects the shutter speed that wi ll produc e the optimal exposure. Large apertures (low f-numbers) reduce depth of field, blurr ing objects beh ind and in front of the main subject.
77 t Mode M (Manual) In manual exposure mode, you contr o l both shutter speed and aperture. To t a k e photographs in manual exp osure mode: 1 Rotate the mode dial to M . 2 Choose aperture and shutter speed. Check ing the exposure indicator (s ee below), adjust shutter speed and aperture .
78 t ❚❚ Long Time-Exposures (M Mode Onl y) At a shutter speed of “bulb, ” the shutter remains open while the shutt er-rel e ase butto n is held down. This can be used for long time- exposure photogr a phs of moving ligh ts, the stars , night scener y , or fireworks.
79 t Exposure Met ering Choose how the ca mera sets exposur e in P , S , A , and M modes (in other modes, the camera selects the metering method automatically). 1 Place the cursor in the information display . If shooting information is not di splayed in the monitor , press the P button.
80 t Aut o exp o s ur e L oc k Use autoexposure lock to r ecompose photographs after metering exposur e: 1 Set meterin g to M or N ( 0 79). L will not produc e the desired results . Note that autoexposure lock is not available in i or j mode. 2 Loc k exp osur e.
81 t Exposure C ompensation Exposure compensation is used to alter ex posure from the value suggested by the camera, making pic tures brighter or darker . It is most effec tive when used with center-weighted or spot meter ing ( 0 79). Choose from values between –5 EV (un derexposure) and +5 EV (overexposure) in increments of 1 / 3 EV .
82 t A The E Button Exposure compensation can also be set by pressing the E butt on and rotating the command dial. The selected value is shown in the viewfinder and information display . E button C ommand dial – 0. 3 EV + 2 EV A Mode M In mode M , exposure compensation affects only the exposure indicator; shutter speed and aperture do not change.
83 t Flash C ompensation Flash c ompensation is used to alter fl ash output from the le vel suggest e d by the camera, changing the brightness of the ma in subject relative t o the background.
84 t A The Y ( M ) and E Buttons Flash compensation can also be set by rotating the command dial while pressing the Y ( M ) and E buttons. The selected value is shown in the viewfinder and information display . Y ( M ) button E button Command dial – 0.
85 t A c tiv e D -Lighting When " On is selected, the camera automatical ly adjusts Active D-Lighting during shooting to preser ve details in h ighlights and shadows, creating photographs with natural contrast.
86 t D Active D-Lighting Noise (randomly-spaced bright pixels, fog , or l ines) may appear in photographs taken with Active D-Lighting. Uneven shading may be visible with some subjects.
87 t White Bala nc e White balance ensures that colors are unaffec ted by the color of the light source. Auto white balance is r ecommended for most light sourc es; in P , S , A , and M modes, other values can be sel ected if necessa ry according to the type of source: 1 Place the cursor in the information display .
88 t A The Shooting Menu White balance can be selected using the White bal ance option in the shooting menu ( 0 131), which also can be used to fine-tune white balance ( 0 89) or measure a value f o r preset white balance ( 0 90).
89 t F ine - T uning White Balance White balance can be “fine tuned” to c ompen sate for variations in the color of the light source or to in t roduc e a deliberate color cast into an image. White balance is fine tuned using the White bala nce option in the shooting men u.
90 t Pr eset Manual Pr eset manual is used to record an d recall custom whit e balance s ettings for shoo ting under mixed lighting or t o compensate f o r light sources with a strong color cast. Tw o methods are av ailable for setting pre set white balance : ❚❚ Measuring a V alue for Preset White Balance 1 Light a reference ob ject.
91 t When the camera is ready to measure white balance , a flashing D ( L ) will appear in the viewfinder and information display . 5 Meas ur e whit e bala nce .
