7 Your DVR S ecurity Kit includes the following items. 1 x 8-chan nel DV R with 1TB HD 6 x Indoor/ Outdoor Cameras 6 x 60’ Bundles of Camera Cab le 18 x Mount ing Hardwar e and Screw.
8 Please be sure the co mputer t hat you w ill use with the DVR Sec urity Kit complies w ith the fol lowing spec ifications: Windows ® X P,VIST A, 7, or 8 Mac ® OS 10.
9 Use the pr ovided p ower ada pter. Do not use this product with a pow er source that applies more tha n the specified v oltage. Never insert metal into the DV R case or i ts openi ngs. Inserting met al into t he DVR case may cau se electric sho ck.
10 Do not attem pt to remov e t he top cover. If you observ e an y abnor mal op eration, unplug t he DVR i mmediate ly and contact technical sup port. Do not attempt t o open the DVR to diagnose the cause o f the problem. (W ARNING: Y ou may be subject ed to severe electrical shoc k if you re move the cover of the DVR.

15 6.3 Mouse You can use a mouse instead of t he remote co ntrol t o navigate through your DVR’ s menus. Con nect the included mouse to the USB port on the back of the D VR. Use the mouse b uttons t o perfor m the foll owing: 1. Left Butt on : Click to select a menu option.

17 7.1 Connecti ng the Po wer Supply 1. Plug the in cluded power a dapter cab le into the ba ck of the DVR. 2. Plug t he other end of the power adapter cable into an av ailable wall outlet (or, if you are using an uninterrupt able power supply, plug the adapter cabl e into one o f its out put sockets).
18 7.2 Connecti ng the DVR to a TV or Monitor Using the supp lied VGA c onnector: 1. Connect the VG A conne ctor to t he back of the DVR’s VGA port . 2. Connect the other end o f the cab le to an avai lable VGA inp ut on your TV or monitor. 3. Select the appropr iate v ideo input channel on your TV or monitor to view the DVR.
19 8.1 Connecti ng Camera s to the DVR 1. Your DVR sy stem co mes with one 60- ft. coaxia l cable per ca mera. Connect e ach cable t o a camer a using the BNC con nectors (yellow connector) and the D C connectors ( red conn ector). 2. Plug the other end o f the cables into the Video Input port s on the back pane l of the DVR.
20 8.2 Mounting the Camer as 1. Choose a l ocation : Decide w here you w ould like to mount the camera. 2. Indicate s crew posit ions : Mark three h oles on the surface w here you plan to mount t he camera, using the ho les in the camera base as a guide.
21 9.1 Sy stem Initi alization After y ou plug in the pow er adapter, the DVR will a utomatic ally start up and display the Night Owl l ogo on your TV while initial izing. After init ialization, your screen w ill display a live camera v iew, showing a ll the cameras t hat are currently conne cted to t he DVR.
22 9.2 On -Screen Dis play The on-scree n display will also show the followin g informat ion: Date & Tim e: Display s the dat e and time on the syst em. Channel Title/Number: Disp lays the channe l name, which you can set in the C amera Menu.
23 Use the Start up Wi zard to enter the security system’s basic settings, networ k settings, record settings, an d HDD sett ings. The Start up W izard wi ll open when t he DVR i s powered on. Refer to t he Startup Gu ide for step- by -step in structions on using the Startup Wizard.
24 Before you can access any menus, you must lo g in. Remote ID: This number should match the number in parentheses to the right of the field. User Name: E nter the user name you created in the Startup Wizard or the User Menu. If you ha ve not created a user name , leave this s etting as “ad min .
25 O pen s the menu interface. Allows you to chec k o ne channel at a ti me to enl arge the se lected channel to a full-screen v iew. Allows you to enter i nto a multi-screen v iew. Allows you to start/stop an auto sequence. This will display the cameras as a slide show .
26 When you open the Main M enu y ou will see a line of icons at the top of the screen. Eac h icon repr esents a different m enu. The menu n ames are listed below.
27 Basic Menu Use the Bas ic Menu to access the Sy stem, D ate/Time, Dis play, Record, and User menus. Chapter 14: Basic Menu Be sure to A pply all cha nges y ou make in t he menus. If you do not apply the changes, they will not be saved. You can a lso select the Default button on any page to restore the DVR’s defa ult settings.
28 14.1 Sy stem Menu The Syst em Menu allows you t o change the language, output resolution , and logout time, an d turn the St artup Wizard on/off. It is reco mmended tha t you leave t he Device Na me and Remote ID fields at their de fault v alues.
29 14.2 Date/Tim e Menu You should set the date and time when first setting up your system. You can also configure Daylight Saving Ti me (DST) sett ings. To access the Date/T ime Menu, se lect the Basi c button, and then select Date/Time fro m the list on the left side of t he screen .
30 14.2.2 DST Menu Use the DST M enu to con figure Day light Savin g Time settings. To access the DST Men u, select the B asic button, select Date/ Time fro m the list on the left sid e of the scr een, and then s elect DST. Enable : Select this bo x if y ou would like to en able the Dayl ight Saving Time settings.
31 14.3 .1 Display Menu Use t he Disp lay M enu t o config ure channel na me, chann el mas king, color , and time/na me settings. To access the Display M enu , select the Basic b utton and then s elect Display from the list o n the left side of the scr een.

34 14.3.1.3 Time/ Name Scre en The Time/Na me Screen i s used to show/remov e the dat e/time and a channel na me display ed on the screen. To access the Time/ Name Scr een, select t he Basic button and then select Display from the list o n the left side of the scr een.
35 14. 3.2 A uto SEQ Menu Use t he Auto SEQ Men u to adjust the chan nels an d time that will be displayed whe n you st art the auto se quence. To access the Auto SEQ Menu, se lect the B asic butt on, select Display from the list on the left s ide of the scr een, and th en select Auto SEQ.
36 14.4.1 Recor d Menu Use t he Rec ord Menu t o enable r ecording, set audio preferences, and specify how y ou would like to record on each channel. To access the Record Me nu ’s bas ic functions, se lect the Basic button , select Recor d from the list on the left side of t he screen, and the n select Basic.
37 14.4.2 Bit R ate Menu The Bit Rat e Menu allows you to set the quality of the recorded v ideo. To access the Bit Rat e Menu, select t he Basic but ton, select Re cord from the list on the left sid e of the scr een, and then s elect Bit Rate . CH: Indic ates the ch annel that you w ill be configuring .
38 14.4.3 Resol ution Choose bet ween D1 (70 4x480) ( High), HD1 (704 x240) ( Medium), or CI F (352x240) (Low ) resoluti ons to record videos. To help maximize the DV R’s hard drive spa ce, use the lowest reso lution. D1 Resoluti on (704x48 0 pixels) : The highest resoluti on.
39 14.4.4 Sche dule Men u The Schedu le Menu allow s you to schedule recor dings. To acc ess the S chedule Menu, select the Basic button, select Record fro m the list on the left sid e of the scr een, and then s elect Schedule . CH : Indicat es the chann el that you will be conf iguring.
40 14.5 User Menu The User Me nu allows y ou to add user s and per missions for those users . To access the User Menu, select t he Basic butt on, select Record fro m the list on the left side of t he screen, and th en select U ser . User Name: Display s the names that you assign to users.

44 15 .1 Alarm Menu 15.1.1 Motio n Menu The Motion Menu allows y ou t o configure the motion settings on y our DVR. To access the Motion Me nu, select t he Advanced b utton, select Alarm from the list on the left s ide of the scr een, and t hen sele ct Motion.
45 15.1.1.1 A rea Screen The Area Scr een allows you to see areas that will and will not detect motion. To ac cess the Area Scre en, select the Adv anced bu tton, select A larm from the list on the left sid e of the scr een, and t hen select Motion . Select Settings in the Area c olumn for the channel y ou are custo mizing.
46 15. 1.1.2 Sc hedule Scre en The Schedu le Screen a llows y ou to choose w hen to record. To access the Motion Me nu ’s Schedu le Scree n, select the Adv anced button, select Al arm from the list on the le ft side of t he screen, and then Motion .
47 15 .1.1 .3 Trigger Screen The Trigger Screen allow s y ou see what has t riggered an a larm. To access the Trigger Scr een, select the Advan ced button, select A larm from the list on the left s ide of the scr een, and t hen sele ct Motion . S elect Settings in the Trigger column for the chan nel you are configuring.
48 15.1.2 Video Loss Menu The Video Lo ss Menu al lows y ou to configure t he video loss settings o n your DVR. To access th e Video Loss M enu, select t he Advanc ed button, se lect A larm from the list on the left side of the scre en, and th en sele ct Video L oss.
49 15.1.3 Camera Block Menu The Camer a Block Menu allows y ou to config ure the settings on y our DVR for when the c amera is covered. To access the Camera Block Men u, select t he Advanced but ton, select Alarm from the list on t he left side of the scr een, and t hen select Camera Block .
50 15.1.4 Others Menu The Others Me nu allow s you to configure the setting s on your DVR for different alar m features. To access the Others Me nu, select t he Advanced b utton, select Alarm from the list on the left side of the scre en, and th en sele ct Others .
51 15 .2 Net work Menu 15 .2.1 LA N Menu The LAN Menu a llows y ou to configure the IP a ddress for y our DVR. Ma ke sure that t he DVR is p lugged directly into your internet router. To access the LAN Men u, select the A dvanced button, select Network from the list on the left side of the scre en, and th en sele ct LAN .
52 15.2.2 PPP oE Menu The PPPo E Menu allows you to configure the DVR using broadband dial-up netw ork access. To access the PPPoE Me nu, select the Advanc ed button, select Net work from the list on the left side of the scre en, and th en sele ct PPPoE.
53 15.2.3 Port Menu The Port Menu a llows you to view your DVR through the Int ernet, software, and mobile ph ones. To access the Port M enu, select t he Advance d button, select Net work fro m the list on the left sid e of the scree n, and then s elect Por t.
54 15.2.4 Sub- Stream Men u The Sub-Str eam Menu al lows y ou to configure the network tr ansfer settings. To access the Sub-Strea m Menu, sel ect the Adv anced button, select Network fro m the list on the left side of the scree n, then se lect Sub-Stream.
55 15.3.1 DDNS Menu The DDNS Men u allows y ou to con figure DDN S setup after you hav e registered f or a free do main nam e at http:// www.nightow ldvr.co m . To access the DDNS Men u, select the A dvanced button, select COMM, and then sel ect DDNS from the list on the le ft side of the scr een.
56 15.3.2 E-Mail Menu The E-Mail Men u allows y ou to con figure email al ert settings. To access the E-Mail Men u, select the A dvanced button, select COMM, and then sel ect E-Mail from the list on the le ft side of the screen. E-mail: Allows you t o enable/disa ble ema il alerts.
57 15.3.3 UPnP Menu The UPnP Me nu allows you to enab le the UP nP (Univ ersal Plug an d Play) setting of t he DVR. To access the UPnP Men u, select the Adv anced but ton, select CO MM, a nd then select U PnP fro m the list on the left side of the screen.
58 15.4 PTZ Menu The PTZ Menu a llows y ou to configure setting s on your DVR to cont rol a PTZ (Pan Ti lt Zoom) ca mera. (PTZ c amera n ot included.) To access the PTZ Menu, select the A dvanced button and the n select P.T.Z. from th e list on the left side o f the scr een.
59 Record Search Menu Use this menu to find, pl ay back, and back u p recorded v ideo. Be sure to A pply all cha nges made to the menus. If y ou do not apply t he changes, t hey will not be saved. You can a lso select the Default button on any page to restore the DVR’s origi nal setting s.
60 The Calendar lets you se lect the dates of record ed v ideo you w ish to play back. To access the Record S earch Men u, select the Record Se arch button. T he Calendar ap pears on the left. Calendar Left / Right A rrows: Switch between mont hs and y ears.
61 The File List shows a list of recor dings. To access the Record S earch Men u, select the Record Se arch button. T he File List is on the right. File List CH: Indic ates the ch annel that was recorded. Start Time : Indicates the time t hat the record ing began.
62 When you p lay bac k a recorded file, a num ber of co ntrols are av ailable. Use t he Ca lendar, File List, and Playback button to playback rec orded files. The playbac k screen has the fo llowing butt ons: Rewinds the recorded video. P ause s/plays the r ecorded v ideo.

67 18.2.1 LA N Menu The LAN Menu allows y ou t o information abo ut your Loca l Area Netw ork (LAN). To access the LAN Men u, select the I nformation but ton, select Networ k, and then sel ect LAN. Network Status: Indicat es whet her the DV R is prop erly connect ed to the internet .
68 18.2.2 PPP oE Menu The PPPo E (Point- to -Point Protocol over Ethernet) Menu a llows y ou to view infor mation about your net work. 74 19 .2 Settings Menu The Settings Menu allows you to import or exp ort the DVR ’s settings . To access the Settings M enu , se lect the Ma intenance but ton and t hen select Settin gs . Export S ettings: Al lows you to copy all of t he settin gs on the D VR to a flash driv e.
75 This chapter will show y ou how to connect your DVR to the internet. Y ou will learn how to properly connect your DVR t o your r outer/modem an d set up port con figurations, int ernet configurat ions, Mo bile configur ations, and DDNS reg istration.
76 20.1 Connecti ng the D VR and R outer/ Modem Use this sect ion to learn h ow to connect the DV R to your r outer/mode m. DVR 1. Make sure th at y our DVR is connect ed to a power out let. 2. Connect the DVR d irectly to t he router through an open Ethernet port with t he included Et hernet cab le.
77 20.2 Windo ws Networ k Confi guration In this secti on you wil l determin e basic inf ormation about your networ k Make sure th at the DVR is properly connected to the router/mode m and that y ou have a Windows computer connect ed to the sa me router.
78 4. Change th e last three d igits to 150. You will need thi s new numb er in a later step. (Example: Say y ou wrote down the IP Address 192.168.0.104. W hen the last digits are c hanged, th e IP address will be 192. 168.0.150.) 5. Write down th is nu mber.
79 Changin g the Net work Sett ings on the DVR For the fol lowing step s, use the infor mation that you just wrote down. To access the LAN Men u, select the A dvanced button, select Network from the list on the left side of the scre en, and th en sele ct LAN.
80 20.3 Appl e (Mac) Net work Co nfiguration Follow the st eps in th is section to configur e remote access for a n Apple Macintosh co mputer. Make sure th at the DVR is properly connected to the rout er/modem an d that you have a Macintosh com puter connect ed to the same router/ modem.
81 Use the in formation that you just wrote down for the next steps. To access the LAN Men u select Adv anced button, select Network from th e list on the left side of t he screen, and then se lect the LAN tab. You can manually enter the IP address/ DNS serv er i nformatio n int o the DVR by selecting Use the foll owing IP a ddres s.
82 After you hav e configure d the Networ k Settings, you w ill need to forward the necessary ports t o be able to view the DVR over t he Internet fro m anywhere in t he world. Refer to y our router’s doc umentation to see how port forwarding w orks for that device.
83 5. You w ill ne ed to enter a new port forwardin g entry for each port that your DVR use s: Media P ort ( 9000), Web Port (2049), and Server Port (2050).
84 21.1 Checki ng the P orts A fter Port Forwar ding Once you have forward ed the necessary ports on your r outer, y ou should check to ma ke sure they have been correct ly forwar ded. 1. Go to ht tp://www .yougetsignal.co m/tools/ope n-ports/ . 2. Type in port 90 00 and sel ect the Check b utton to see if the port tests as open or closed.
85 22.1 Registeri ng a Fr ee Domai n Name ( DDNS) This option a llows you t o set up a fre e website address that will point back to the DVR r egardless o f whether the IP Ad dress chang es. If you do not have a stat ic IP Address, you shoul d use this opt ion.
86 4. Create a do main name. 5. If the doma in name that you hav e chosen i s availab le, you w ill see a window that tells y ou that your domain was s uccessfully created. (If the do main name is t aken, t ry again unti l you find an av ailable name.
87 22.2 Addi ng your New Domain Name to y our DVR Use the DD NS Menu to c onfigure DDNS setup after you hav e registered for a free do main na me. To access the DDNS Men u, select the A dvanced button, select COMM, and then sel ect DDNS from the list on the le ft side of t he screen.
88 Use the Intern et Explorer or Contro l Manage ment Software t o access y our DVR remot ely over the Internet or within your local a rea networ k. Make sure that y ou have compl eted the steps in Chapters 21 and 22 o f this manual be fore try ing to access the DVR usin g this softw are.
89 23.2 DVR Lo gin User Nam e : Type in t he user na me that you created in t he Password Men u of the DVR. Pass word: Enter the pa ssword that was assigned to the User. Languag e: If you w ould like the information t o be di splayed in another lang uage, y ou can change it to English, French, or Spanish.
90 23.3 Using Inter net Expl orer Internet Exp lorer is a re mote-v iewing progra m that allow s you to view live and recorded v ideo ov er the Int ernet.
91 Play Control T ake s a snapshot of the v ideo. Starts/stops recording on all chann els. Stops/pla ys the liv e video feed . Enables Main-Strea m on all ch annels. This r equires a fast networ k for transmissio n. Enables Sub-Strea m on all chan nels.
92 PTZ Contr ol These contro l settings ca n only be used for ca meras t hat have Pan, Tilt, and Zoom f eatures. (A PTZ camera is not incl uded.) Arrows: Mov e the cam era manua lly in t he direction of the arrow.
93 Play back This screen lets you sear ch, play back, and b ack up recorde d videos. To access thi s menu, select the Pl ayback butt on from the Me nu Bar. Calendar: Shows day s with record ings in bold n umbers . S elect a date to v iew a file list.
94 Play back (continued) Use the bot tom contro l panel for various v ideo contr ols. Plays the video. P ause s the video. Stops the video. Slows down the vid eo. S peed s up the v ideo. S how s each fram e during playback. Captures an image. Allows you to conf igure the t imeline to show hours and minutes.
95 Backup This screen al lows you t o back up file s to y our computer. To access thi s screen, select the Pl ayback t ab from the Menu Bar and then select t he Record Li st button on the left si de of the screen. CH : S how s the channe l that recorded the file.
96 Remote Sett ing This screen al lows you t o access all of t he DVR s etting m enus. To access the Remote Setting scree n, select t he Remote S etting button from the Men u Bar. Informatio n: Refer to Chapter 19 of this gu ide for details on configurati on.
97 23.4 Using Control Manageme nt Soft ware (CMS – Ni ghtowl Vi ew) You can use the CMS software to access one or mo re DVRs remotely ov er the Internet or within y our local are a networ k. Make sure that you hav e completed t he Remot e Access ch apter of t his manu al before try ing to access the DVR using t his softw are.
98 Starting t he CMS You will hav e to register a s an adm inistrator w hen start ing the CMS. Ty pe: Choose betwee n Local an d Server . Local allows you to configure DVRs. Serv er allows you t o enter a serv er address. F or example, the Night O wl DDNS Server.
99 Device List This menu show s all DV Rs that have been ad ded to t he CMS. Device List : L is ts all DVRs t hat have been added to the CMS. Allows you to refresh devices.
100 Device Tab To add a dev ice you must first add a group by selecting t he plus (+) sign in the navigati on pane. N ext, right-clic k your mous e on the group that y ou would like t o add the d evice to, and t hen select A dd a Device.
