PiN 570 | User Man ual 12 3. Battery When fully charged, your PiN will operate for a varying l ength of time, depending on two main factors: (1) Whether the GPS rece iver is turned on; (2) wh ether the backlight is set to on the defaul t or high setting.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 14 4. GPS and GPS Signals GPS stands for “Global Positioning System”, which is a n etwork of satellites that t ransmit accurate tim e and position information worldwide . GPS receivers receive si gnals from these satellites and use the information to determine an exact l ocation.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 15 5. Microsoft ActiveSync Using Microsoft Active Sync, you can synchroni ze the information on your computer with the information on yo ur PiN. Synchronization com pares the data on your PiN w ith your computer and updates both computers with the mos t recent information.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 16 Installing ActiveSync on Your Computer 1. Turn on your computer and allo w Microsoft Windows to start. 2. Insert the PiN Companion CD into the CD drive of your computer. The Getting Starte d with your Pocke t PC window will open.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 17 6. Memory Card Your PiN may come with a memory card contai ning a preactivated S mart S map of the region in which it was purchased. To navigate to your destination you wi ll first need to insert the m emory card into your PiN .
PiN 570 | User Man ual 18 7. Starting Your PiN 1. Check the Hard Reset switch o n the bottom of the PiN. If this is in the l eft position, remove the stylus a nd use it to se t it to the right a nd set up your PiN for use. 2. Press the Power button on the left side of the PiN The PiN will turn on.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 19 8. Positioning the PiN in a Vehicle Before you be gin, determi ne whet her your vehicle is fitted with a heat-refle cting or heated windscreen. If so, you will need to purchase an external antenna for your PiN to receive GPS signals.

It dis plays the ac tive program and current t ime, and allows you to switch to programs and c lose screens. Use the command bar at the bottom of the s creen to p erform tasks in programs.

For example , if you create an appointment in Calendar, a task with a due date in Tasks, or a n alarm in Clock, you ca n be notified i n any of th e following ways when tha t activity fal ls due: • A message box app ears on the scr een.

When you tap the di splayed word, it is inser ted into your text at the insertion point. Th e more you use your P iN, the more words it lear ns to anticipa te.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 27 The soft keyboard can be used in three modes: small, l arge with gestures enabled, and large wi thout gestures enabled. The larger mod es gives the adv antag e of lar ger keys and therefore high er accuracy; the small mode allo ws you to vie w the soft k eyboard in a styl e similar to a s tandard QWE RTY keyboard.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 28 To amend soft keyboard options: With Keyboard sele cted as the input method , tap the a rrow next to the Input Panel butto n and tap O ptions . This acti vates the Input Method screen, in wh ich you can set the keybo ard to your pr eferred mode.

While this method wil l allow you to write faster, you may have to learn to form letters in a new way . NOTE : Some program s that accept writing may no t have th e Pen butto n. See the d ocumentation for that program to find out how to switch to writing mode.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 33 If your PiN converts your tex t to the wrong word, you ca n select the correct word from a lis t of alter nates or you can return to the or iginal writi ng. To do so, tap and hold th e incorrec t word (tap one word a t a time).
PiN 570 | User Man ual 34 Drawing on the Screen You can draw on the screen in the sam e way that you write on th e screen. The difference b etween writin g and drawing on the screen is how you sele ct items and how they ca n be edited. For example, selected drawings ca n be resized, while writ ing cannot.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 35 Recording a Message In any progra m where you can write or draw o n the screen, you can also qui ckly capture thought s, reminders, and phone numbers by recording a message. In C alendar, Tasks, and Contacts, you can include a recording in the Notes tab.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 37 10. Managing Your Pocket PC Find and Organize Information Use the Find fea ture on your P iN helps you quic kly locate i nformation. Tap Æ Find . Enter the t ext you wan t to find, s elect a d ata type, and then tap Go to begin searchin g.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 38 Changing Password settings: To set or change a password on your PiN, tap Æ Settings Æ Password. You can ch oose between a simple 4-digit numeric al password or a stronger, alphan umeric passwor d. Before se tting your password, set the amount of time after which your PiN will l ock if you have not been us ing it.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 39 To add programs using ActiveSync You will need to install the appropriate s oftware for your PiN on your c omputer before transferring it to your PiN. For information on installing ActiveSync on you r computer, see p ages 15-16.

Using the input pa nel, enter a subject and a loc ation. 4. You can ch ange the date or time of the appoin tment by tap ping on the relevant field .

Contacts: Tracking Friends and Colleagues Contacts maintains address details for your friends and colleagues for easy retrie val at home o r on the ro ad. To assign the con tact to a c ategory, scroll to and tap Categories and select a categ ory from the list.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 52 Connecting Directly to an E-mail Server In addition to synchronizing e-ma il messages with your de sktop computer, you can send and receive e-mail messages by conne cting to an e-m ail server using a mo d em or netw ork card conne cted to your P iN.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 54 Replying to Meeting Invitations When meeting invitations arrive in your Inbox, you can view them just li ke normal e- mail messa ges. The header of th e e-mail differs from standard e-mail messages. Clicking the butto n allows you to acc ept, decline, or te ntatively accep t the meeting invi tation.

Composing Messages To compose an e-mail message: 1. Tap New . 2. In the To field, enter th e e-mail addresses of one or more r ecipients, sepa rating them with a semico lon.

First e nter an e-mail address. 2. Inbox will then attempt to ascertain your mail se rver setti ngs by examinin g the syntax of your e-mail address.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 64 Managing E-mail Messages and Folders By default, message s are displayed in one of five fold ers for each s ervice you ha ve created: Inbox, D eleted Items, Drafts, Outb ox and S ent Items. The D eleted Items folder contains m essages that hav e been dele ted on the PiN.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 65 13. More Programs Pocket Word Using Pocket Word , you can cr eate new docum ents on your PiN , copy docume nts from your comp uter to your PiN, or synchr onize documents between your com puter and your PiN so that you h ave the most up-to- date conten t in both lo cations.
PiN 570 | User Man ual 66 Input Modes Once in a docume nt, the View menu allow s you to switch betwee n input modes. You have a cho ice of writing, drawing, typ ing, and recording modes.

T o do this, you w ill need to create the conne ction first, as described in C hapter 16.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 86 16. Getting Connected You can use your PiN to exchange informat ion with othe r PiNs as well as your d esktop computer , a network, or the Inte rnet. You have the fol lowing connect ion options: • Connect to you r Internet service provid er (ISP).
PiN 570 | User Man ual 87 Creating a modem connection to an ISP 1. Obtain the following inform ation from your ISP : ISP dial-up access telephon e number, use r name, password and TCP/ IP settings. Some I SPs require in formation in front of the user nam e, such as MSN/username .
PiN 570 | User Man ual 88 7. Now enter the number that should b e dialed when conne cting to your ISP. Incl ude any special digits such as “*” or “#”. We will explore dialing rules be low. 8. Now enter any authentic ation informatio n your ISP reques ts.

To change the connect ion speed of your co nnection, w ait for dial to ne before diali ng, wait for credit card, a dd dial-string modem commands, or cancel ca ll after a set number of seconds , use the General tab. ii. Setting up a proxy server co nnection for work connections: If you are connec ted to your I SP or private n etwork duri ng synchroniz ation, your PiN should downl oad proper proxy settings during s ynchronizatio n from your PC.

To change existing settings , under My Work Network , tap Manage existing connections and access the Proxy tab.

PiN 570 | User Man ual 97 Initiating a modem connection To start the connection, simp ly start using on e of the followin g programs. Your PiN wi ll automatically begin connecting. O nce connect ed, you can: • Send and receiv e e-mail m essages by using I nbox.

Tap on the n ame of the driver to receive advanced options . vi. Configure th e IP address sett ings in the IP Address tab .
