Your vehicle has adaptive, two-stage front air bags. In the event of a collision, the air bag control unit evaluates the vehicle deceleration. In the first deployment stage, the front air bag is filled with enough propellant gas to reduce the risk of injuries.
G WARNING Only use seat covers which have been tested and approved by Mercedes-Benz for your vehicle model. Using seat covers or other seat coverings can cause a malfunction of the side impact air bags and/or the pelvis air bags. Contact an authorized Mercedes-Benz Center for availability.

X Tilt the top of the NECK-PRO head restraint cushion forwards in the direction of arrow : . X Push the NECK-PRO head restraint cushion down in the direction of arrow ; as far as it will go. X Firmly push the NECK-PRO head restraint cushion back in the direction of arrow = until the cushion engages.
In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt. The air bags can only protect as intended if the occupants are properly wearing their seat belts. G WARNING Never ride in a moving vehicle with the seat backrest in an excessively reclined position as this can be dangerous.
abdomen, it could cause serious injuries in a crash. R Never wear seat belts over rigid or breakable objects in or on your clothing, such as eyeglasses, pens, keys etc., as these might cause injuries. R Make sure the seat belt is always fitted snugly.
X If necessary, adjust the seat belt to the appropriate height ( Y page 53). X If necessary, pull upwards on the shoulder section of the seat belt to tighten the belt across your body. All seat belts except the driver's seat belt are equipped with a special seat belt retractor to securely fasten child restraint systems in the vehicle.
The warning tone ceases after 60 seconds even if the driver or front passenger has still not fastened their seat belt. The 7 seat belt warning lamp stops flashing, but remains lit.
Children in the vehicle Child restraint systems Important safety notes We recommend that all infants and children be properly secured in an infant or child restraint system at all times while the vehicle is in motion. The use of seat belts and infant and child restraint systems is required by law in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, the U.

X To activate/deactivate: press button ; . If indicator lamp : is lit, operation of the rear side windows is deactivated. Operation is only possible using the switches in the driver's door. If indicator lamp : is off, operation is possible using the switches in the rear compartment.
Important safety notes If you fail to adapt your driving style, the driving safety systems can neither reduce the risk of accident nor override the laws of physics. Driving safety systems are merely aids designed to assist driving. You are responsible for the distance to the vehicle in front, for vehicle speed and for braking in good time.
G WARNING If the BAS malfunctions, the brake system still functions, but without the additional brake boost available that the BAS would normally provide in an emergency braking maneuver.
Deactivating/activating ESP ® (except AMG vehicles) G WARNING ESP ® should not be deactivated during normal driving other than in the circumstances described below. Disabling the system will reduce vehicle stability in driving maneuvers. Do not deactivate ESP ® when the emergency or spare wheel is mounted.
Do not switch on the SPORT handling when a spare wheel is mounted. ESP ® is activated automatically when the engine is started. It may be best to activate SPORT handling mode in the following situati.
If you deactivate ESP ® : R ESP ® no longer improves driving stability. R engine torque is no longer limited and the drive wheels are able to spin. The spinning wheels produce a cutting effect for better traction. R traction control is still activated.
Theft deterrent locking system Immobilizer The immobilizer prevents your vehicle from being started without the correct SmartKey. When leaving the vehicle, always take the SmartKey with you and lock the vehicle. The engine can be started by anyone with a valid SmartKey that is left inside the vehicle.
X To stop the alarm using KEYLESS-GO: grasp the outside door handle. The SmartKey must be outside the vehicle. The alarm is switched off. or X Press the Start/Stop button on the dashboard. The SmartKey must be inside the vehicle. The alarm is switched off.

: & Locks the vehicle ; F Unlocks the trunk lid = % Unlocks the vehicle When unlocking, the turn signals flash once. When locking, they flash three times. When it is dark, the surround lighting also comes on if it is activated in the on-board computer ( Y page 189).
X To unlock the vehicle: touch the inner surface of the door handle. X To lock the vehicle: touch sensor surface : . X Convenience closing feature: touch recessed sensor surface ; for an extended period ( Y page 84). If you pull on the handle of the trunk lid, only the trunk of the vehicle is unlocked.
Removing the mechanical key X Push release catch : in the direction of the arrow and at the same time, remove mechanical key ; from the SmartKey. SmartKey battery Important safety notes Have the batteries changed at a qualified specialist workshop. G WARNING Batteries contain toxic substances.

X Switch off non-essential consumers, e.g. seat heating or interior lighting, and try to start the engine again. If this does not work: X Check the starter battery and charge it if necessary ( Y page 278).

of more than 9 mph (15 km/h), the vehicle locks automatically. You could therefore be locked out when: R the vehicle is being pushed. R the vehicle is being towed. R the vehicle is being tested on a dynamometer. X To deactivate: press and hold button : for about five seconds until a tone sounds.
X Turn the mechanical key clockwise as far as it will go to position 1 . X Turn the mechanical key back and remove it. X Make sure that the doors and the trunk lid are locked. X Insert the mechanical key into the SmartKey. i If you lock the vehicle as described above, the fuel filler flap is not locked.

Closing G WARNING To prevent possible personal injury, always keep hands and fingers away from the trunk opening when closing the trunk lid.
You can open the trunk lid from the driver's seat when the vehicle is stationary and unlocked. X To open: press the upper section of remote operating switch for trunk lid : until the trunk lid opens. Locking the trunk separately You can lock the trunk separately.
X Briefly press emergency release button : . The trunk lid unlocks and opens. The trunk lid can be unlocked and opened with the trunk lid emergency release when the vehicle is stationary or while driving.
The switches for all side windows are located on the driver's door. There is also a switch on each door for the corresponding side window. The switches on the driver's door take precedence. i The side windows cannot be operated from the rear when the override feature for the side windows is activated ( Y page 59).
with power tilt/sliding panel will open for as long as the door handle is held but the door is not opened. Using the SmartKey i The SmartKey must be close to the driver's door handle. X Point the tip of the SmartKey at the driver's door handle.
Problems with the side windows Problem: a side window cannot be closed because it is blocked by objects, e.g. leaves in the window guide. X Remove the objects. X Close the side window. Problem: a side window cannot be closed and you cannot see the cause.
damaged if water enters the vehicle interior. i Resonance noises can occur in addition to the usual airflow noises when the sliding sunroof is open. They are caused by minor pressure fluctuations in the vehicle interior. Change the position of the sliding sunroof or open a side window slightly to reduce or eliminate these noises.
The panorama roof with power tilt/sliding panel can only be operated when the roller sunblind is open. X Turn the SmartKey to position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock.
until the panorama roof with power tilt/ sliding panel is fully closed. X Keep the 3 switch pulled for an additional second. X Press the 3 switch repeatedly to the point of resistance in the direction of arrow ; until the roller sunblinds have opened about 4 in (10 cm).

injury to the head and neck in the event of an accident or similar situation. Do not drive the vehicle without the seat head restraints. Head restraints are intended to help reduce injuries during an accident. ! To avoid damage to the seats and the seat heating, observe the following information: R keep liquids from spilling on the seats.
The time period starts over again if, within these three minutes, you: R open or close a front door R insert the SmartKey into the ignition lock or remove it from the ignition lock R switch the ignition on or off If the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock, the seats can be adjusted at any time.
X Push or pull the lower edge of the head restraint in the direction of the arrow. Adjusting the head restraint height electrically 4 X To adjust the head restraint height: slide the switch for head restraint adjustment ( Y page 92) up or down in the direction of the arrow.
Removing and installing rear head restraints 5 G WARNING Occupants should only travel sitting on seats which have the head restraints installed. This reduces the risk of injury to occupants in the event of an accident. X Release the rear seat backrest and fold it slightly forwards ( Y page 237).
: To adjust the upper back support ; To adjust the contour of the backrest in the lumbar region = To adjust the lateral structure and support of the seat X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. i If, after a certain amount of time, the seat no longer has the desired contour, repeat the adjustment.
i If the battery voltage is too low, the seat ventilation may switch off. X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X To switch on: press button : repeatedly until the desired ventilation level is set. i You can open the side windows and the sliding sunroof using the "Convenience opening" feature ( Y page 83).
Adjusting the steering wheel electrically : To adjust the steering wheel height ; To adjust the steering wheel position (fore-and-aft adjustment) i Other topics: R EASY-ENTRY/EXIT feature ( Y page 98).
Crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature If the crash-responsive EASY-EXIT feature is triggered in an accident, the steering column will move upwards when the driver's door is opened. This occurs irrespective of the position of the SmartKey in the ignition lock.
X Make sure that the SmartKey is in position 1 or 2 in the ignition lock. X Briefly press button : . Both exterior mirrors fold in or out. i Make sure that the exterior mirrors are always folded out fully while driving. They could otherwise vibrate. i If you are driving faster than 9 mph (15 km/h), you can no longer fold in the exterior mirrors.
engage reverse gear. You can store this position. X Make sure that the vehicle is stationary and that the SmartKey is in position 2 in the ignition lock. X Press button ; for the exterior mirror on the front-passenger side. X Engage reverse gear. The exterior mirror on the front-passenger side moves to the preset parking position.
X Adjust the seat ( Y page 92). X On the driver's side, adjust the steering wheel ( Y page 98) and the exterior mirrors ( Y page 99). X Briefly press the M memory button and then press storage position button 1 , 2 or 3 within three seconds. The settings are stored in the selected preset position.

X Press the R button. The yellow R indicator lamp in the instrument cluster lights up. X To switch off the rear fog lamp: press the R button. The yellow R indicator lamp in the instrument cluster goes out.
The hazard warning lamps automatically switch on if: R an air bag is deployed. R the vehicle is slowed down rapidly from a speed of over 45 mph (70 km/h) and comes to a halt. X To switch on the hazard warning lamps: press button : . All turn signals flash.
The system automatically adapts the low- beam headlamp range depending on the distance to the other vehicle. Once the system no longer detects any other vehicles, it reactivates the high-beam headlamps. The system's optical sensor is located behind the windshield near the overhead control panel.
Headlamps fogged up on the inside The headlamps may fog up on the inside if there is high atmospheric humidity. X Drive with the headlamps switched on. The level of moisture diminishes, depending on the length of the journey and the weather conditions (humidity and temperature).
Manual interior lighting control X To switch the front interior lighting on/ off: press the c button. X To switch the rear interior lighting on/ off: press the u button.
Halogen headlamps : Parking lamp/standing lamp: W 5 W ; High-beam headlamp: H7 55 W = Low-beam headlamp: H7 55 W Bi-Xenon headlamps : Cornering lamp: H7 55 W Tail lamp : Backup lamp: P 21 W ; Brake lamp: P 21 W = Brake lamp/parking lamp: P 21 W Changing the front bulbs Low-beam headlamps (halogen headlamps) X Switch off the lights.
X Turn housing cover : counter-clockwise and pull it out. X Turn bulb holder ; counter-clockwise and pull it out. X Take the bulb out of bulb holder ; . X Insert the new bulb into bulb holder ; . X Insert bulb holder ; into the lamp and turn it clockwise.
Right-hand side trim panel Left-hand side trim panel (vehicles with a sound system or trailer coupling) X To open: turn rotary catch : 90° in the direction of the arrow and remove side trim panel ; . X To close: insert side trim panel ; and turn rotary catch : 90° in the opposite direction to the arrow.
X Press the respective bulb : , ; or = back and turn it counter-clockwise to remove it from the bulb holder. X Insert the new bulb into the bulb holder and turn it clockwise. X Reinsert the connector for LED light functions in the bulb holder. X Insert the bulb holder again and lock it in place.
Replacing the wiper blades Important safety notes G WARNING For safety reasons, switch off the windshield wipers and remove the SmartKey from the ignition lock before changing the wiper blades (vehicles with KEYLESS-GO: make sure that the on-board electronics are in state 0 ).
X Firmly press release knob : and pull the wiper blade upwards from the wiper arm in the direction of the arrow. Installing the wiper blades X Position the new wiper blade in the retainer on the wiper arm and slide it into place in the opposite direction to the arrow.

Pressing the Start/Stop button several times in succession corresponds to the different SmartKey positions in the ignition lock. This is only the case if you are not depressing the brake pedal. If you depress the brake pedal and press the Start/Stop button, the engine starts immediately.
Do not run the engine in confined areas (such as a garage) which are not properly ventilated. If you think that exhaust gas fumes are entering the vehicle while driving, have the cause determined and corrected immediately. If you must drive under these conditions, drive only with at least one window fully open at all times.

Indicator and warning display : Yellow indicator lamp/red warning lamp When Blind Spot Assist is activated, indicator lamp : in the exterior mirrors lights up yellow at speeds of up to 20 mph(30 km/h). G WARNING Driving when your engine is overheated can cause some fluids which may have leaked into the engine compartment to catch fire. You could be seriously burned. Steam from an overheated engine can cause serious burns which can occur just by opening the engine hood.
