Occupant safety 42 Vehicle equipment i This Operator’s Manual describes all fea- tures, standard or optional, potentially available for your vehicle at the time of pur- chase. Please be aware that your vehicle might not be equipped with all features described in this manual.
Occupant safety 43 SRS indicator lamp The SRS system conducts a self-test when the ignition is switched on and in regular intervals while the engine is running.

Occupant safety 50 If the front passenger front air bag is deployed, the rate of inflation will be influ- enced by: R the rate of relevant vehicle deceleration as assessed by the air bag control unit R the front passenger’s weight category as identified by the OCS.
Occupant safety 51 R While seated, an occupant should not position him/herself in such a way as to cause the occupant’s weight to be lifted from the seat bottom as this may result in the OCS being unable to correctly approximate the occupant’s weight cat- egory.
Occupant safety 52 likely to hit the interior of the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt. The air bags can only protect as intended if the occupants are properly wearing their seat belts.
Occupant safety 53 too much force to the ribs or abdomen, which could severely injure internal organs such as your liver or spleen. Adjust the seat belt so that the shoulder section is located as close as possible to the middle of the shoulder (it should not touch the neck).
Occupant safety 54 your seat belt properly buckled. Without your seat belt buckled, you are much more likely to hit the interior of the vehicle or be ejected from it. You can be seriously injured or killed. In the same crash, the possibility of injury or death is lessened if you are properly wearing your seat belt.

Occupant safety 56 the warning chime stops sounding, the seat belt telltale < stops flashing but contin- ues to be illuminated. After a vehicle standstill, the warning chime is reactivated and the seat belt telltale < is flashing again if the vehicle speed once exceeds 15 mph (25 km/h).

Occupant safety 60 Do not expose the child restraint system to direct sunlight. The child restraint system’s metal parts, for example, could become very hot, and the child could be burned on these parts. G Warning! Do not carry heavy or hard objects in the passenger compartment unless they are firmly secured in place.
Occupant safety 61 A child’s risk of serious or fatal injuries is significantly increased if the child restraints are not properly secured in the vehicle and/or the child is not properly secured in the child restraint. Children too big for a toddler restraint must ride in seats using regular seat belts.
Occupant safety 62 Once top tether anchorage hook 3 is attached, the child restraint itself can be secured. X Install the child restraint system and tighten top tether strap 4 according to the child restraint manufacturer’s instructions. After removing the child restraint system and the top tether strap 4 .
Occupant safety 63 Child safety Child safety locks G Observe Safety notes, see page 59. G Warning! Children could open a rear door from the inside. This may cause serious personal injury or an accident. Therefore, secure the rear doors with the child safety locks when- ever children are riding in the back seats of the vehicle.
Driving safety systems 64 Panic alarm 1 Â button i USA only: This device complies with Part 15 of the FCC Rules. Operation is subject to the fol- lowing two conditions: 1. This device may not cause harmful interference, and 2. this device must accept any interfer- ence received, including interference that may cause undesired operation.
Driving safety systems 65 The driving safety systems described in this section cannot reduce these risks or pre- vent the natural laws of physics from acting on the vehicle. They cannot increase brak- ing or steering efficiency beyond that afforded by the condition of the vehicle brakes and tires or the traction afforded.
Driving safety systems 66 For more information, see “What to do if …?” ( Y page 291). BAS G Observe Safety notes, see page 64. The Brake Assist System (BAS) operates in emergency situations. If you apply the brakes very quickly, the BAS automatically provides full brake boost, thereby potentially reducing the braking distance.
Driving safety systems 67 The ESP ® warning lamp v in the instru- ment cluster flashes when the ESP ® is engaged. G Warning! Never switch off the ESP ® when you see the ESP ® warning lamp v flashing in the instrument cluster. In this case proceed as follows: R When driving off, apply as little throttle as possible.
Driving safety systems 68 To improve the vehicle’s traction, switch off the ESP ® in driving situations in which it would be advantageous to have the drive wheels spin and thus cut into surfaces fo.
Anti-theft systems 69 When you switch off the ESP ® R the ESP ® does not stabilize the vehicle R the engine output is not limited, which allows the drive wheels to spin R the ETS will still apply th.
Anti-theft systems 70 Anti-theft alarm system Once the alarm system has been armed, a visual and audible alarm is triggered when someone opens: R a door R the trunk R the hood The alarm will stay on even if the activating element (a door, for example) is immediately closed.

Once you close the door, the window moves up again. ! A side window will not work if it is blocked with ice or if the vehicle battery is dis- charged.
Locking and unlocking 74 KEYLESS-GO Vehicles equipped with KEYLESS-GO come with two SmartKeys with KEYLESS-GO, each with remote control and a removable mechanical key. The KEYLESS-GO function is integrated into the SmartKey. On these vehicles, the validity of the SmartKey with KEYLESS-GO is checked every time you pull an outside door handle.

Locking and unlocking 79 Vehicles with trunk opening/closing system 1 Indicator lamp 2 Remote trunk opening/closing switch X Pull switch 2 until the trunk begins to open. Indicator lamp 1 in the switch comes on and remains lit until the trunk is closed.
Locking and unlocking 80 Closing the trunk from the inside auto- matically G Warning! Maintain sight of the area around the rear of the vehicle while operating the trunk lid with the door mounted switch. Monitor the closing procedure carefully to make sure no one is in danger of being injured.

The emergency release button unlocks and opens the trunk while the vehicle is standing still or in motion. Illumination of the emergency release button: R The button flashes for 30 minutes after opening the trunk.

Seats 84 KEYLESS-GO start/stop button 1 USA only 2 Canada only Position 0 Before you press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button, the vehicle’s on-board electronics have status 0 (as with SmartKey removed). Position 1 X Press the KEYLESS-GO start/stop button once.
Seats 85 G Warning! Your seat must be adjusted so that you can correctly fasten your seat belt. Observe the following points: R Adjust the seat backrest until your arms are slightly angled when holding the steering wheel. R Adjust the seat to a comfortable seating position that still allows you to reach the accelerator/brake pedal safely.
Seats 86 X Seat fore and aft adjustment: Press the switch forward or backward in direction of arrow 4 . i When moving the seat fore or aft, the head restraints may readjust automatically. X Seat backrest tilt: Press the switch for- ward or backward in direction of arrow 5 .
Seats 87 Lumbar support You can adjust the contour of the front seat’s lumbar support to help enhance support to your spine. 1 Adjustment lever X Move adjustment lever 1 in direction of the arrows until you have reached a com- fortable seating position.
Seats 88 1 Head restraint release switch X Switch on the ignition. X Press the symbol-side on switch 1 to release the head restraints. The head restraints will fold backward. Placing head restraints upright X Pull the head restraint forward until it locks into position.
Seats 89 X Move the seat backrest support cushion to the bottom with button 3 or to the center with button 2 . X Seat backrest side bolsters: Adjust the side bolsters so that they provide good lat- eral support using switch 1 . i If, after a period of time, the seat no longer provides the desired contour, then repeat the adjustment procedure.
Multifunction steering wheel 90 The seat heating switches from level 3 (high) to level 2 after approximately 5 minutes. The seat heating switches from level 2 to level 1 (low) after approximately 10 minutes. The seat heating automatically switches off after approximately 20 minutes.
Multifunction steering wheel 91 Easy-entry/exit feature This feature allows for easier entry into and exit from the vehicle. When entering and exit- ing the vehicle, the steering wheel is in its uppermost position. The easy-entry/exit feature can be activated or deactivated in the Convenience submenu of the control system ( Y page 138).
Mirrors 92 i The steering wheel heating is temporarily suspended while indicator lamp 3 remains on when the temperature of the vehicle interior is above 86‡ (30†) or if the temperature of the steering wheel is above 95‡ (35†). When these conditions do not apply any- more, steering wheel heating continues.
Memory function 93 i At low ambient temperatures, the exterior rear view mirrors will be heated automati- cally. Auto-dimming rear view mirrors The reflection brightness of the exterior rear view mirr.
Lighting 94 Recalling positions from memory X Press and hold desired memory position button 1 , 2 or 3 until the seat, on the driver’s side also the steering wheel and exterior rear view mirrors, have completely moved to the stored positions. i Releasing the memory position button stops movement to the stored positions immediately.
Lighting 95 starter switch or open the driver’s door with the ignition switched off. When the parking lamps or the rear fog lamp are switched on and you remove the SmartKey from the starter switch or open the driver’s door, an acoustic signal sounds.
Lighting 96 Canada only: High-beam headlamps are only available with the exterior lamp switch in position B . Daytime running lamp mode In Canada the daytime running lamp mode is mandatory and therefore in a constant mode. In the USA the daytime running lamp mode is deactivated by default.
Lighting 97 lamps should only be used in conjunction with low-beam headlamps. Consult your State or Province Motor Vehicle Regulations regard- ing permissible lamp operation. X Switch on the ignition. X Turn the exterior lamp switch to position C or B ( Y page 94).
Lighting 98 Turn signals 1 Turn signals, right 2 Turn signals, left X Press the combination switch in direction of arrow 1 or 2 . The corresponding turn signal indicator lamp L or K in the instrument clus- ter flashes. The combination switch resets automatically after major steering wheel movements.
Lighting 99 Corner-illuminating front fog lamps The corner-illuminating front fog lamps improve illumination of the area in the direc- tion into which you are turning.
Lighting 100 Interior lighting in the front 1 X Left front reading lamp on/off 2 ò Rear interior lighting on/off 3 ¡ Automatic control on/off 4 ð Front interior lighting on/off 5 X Right front reading lamp on/off 6 Interior lighting 7 Ambient lighting 8 Front reading lamps Automatic control X Activating: Press switch ¡ .
Wipers 101 The overhead control panel is located above the rear seat bench. 1 X Left rear reading lamp on/off 2 X Right rear reading lamp on/off X Switching on/off rear reading lamps: Press respective reading lamp switch X . Wipers Notes ! Do not operate the wipers when the wind- shield is dry.
Wipers 102 ically sets a suitable wiping interval depend- ing on the wetness of the sensor surface. ! Do not leave windshield wipers on an intermittent setting when the vehicle is taken to an automatic car wash or during windshield cleaning.
Power windows 103 - Remove blockage. - Turn the windshield wipers on again. If the windshield wipers fail to function at all with the combination switch in position U or V , R set the combination swit.
Power windows 104 i After switching off the ignition or remov- ing the SmartKey from the starter switch, you can operate the door windows until you open the driver’s or front passenger door. If no door was opened you can operate the door windows for up to 5 minutes.
Power windows 105 X Pull and hold the respective switch once more immediately until the door window is completely closed. X Hold the respective switch for approxi- mately 1 second.
Driving and parking 106 X Close all doors. X Press and hold the lock button on an out- side door handle ( Y page 74) until the door windows and the tilt/sliding sunroof are completely closed. X Release the lock button on the outside door handle to interrupt the closing procedure.

Driving and parking 108 The engine does not start. You can hear the starter. There could be a malfunction in the engine electronics or in the fuel supply system. Carry out the following steps: X If you are starting the engine with the SmartKey: Turn the SmartKey in the starter switch to position 0 and repeat the starting procedure.
Driving and parking 109 i Once the vehicle is in motion, the auto- matic central locking system engages and the locking knobs in the doors move down. The automatic door lock feature can be deactivated ( Y page 138).
Driving and parking 110 In case of accident If the vehicle is leaking fuel: X Do not start the engine under any circum- stances. X Exit the vehicle at a safe distance from the roadway.
Driving and parking 111 the vehicle’s brake lights do not light up when the parking brake is engaged. G Warning!
