Operation In the “Operation” section you will find de- tailed information on operating, maintai n- ing and caring for your vehicle. The first 1000 miles (1500 km) The more cautiously yo u treat your vehicle during the break-in period, the more satis- fied you will be with its performance later on.
Operation Driving instructions 왔 Driving instructions Drive sensibly – save fuel Fuel consumption, to a great extent, de- pends on driving habits and operating con- ditions. To save fuel you should: 앫 Keep tires at the recommended infla- tion pressures.
Operation Driving instructions Power assistance Brakes Wa r n i n g ! G The brake system requires electrical energy for operatio n. A malfunction in the ve hicle’s power supply or electrical system may impair brake system operation and swit ch it into its emer- gency operation mode.
Operation Driving instructions To help prevent brake disk corrosion after driving on wet road surfaces (particularly salted roads), it is advisable to brake the vehicle with considerable force prior to parking. The heat generated serves to dry the brakes.
Operation Driving instructions Driving o ff Apply the brakes to test them briefly after driving off. Perform this procedure only when the road is clear of other traffic. Warm up the engine smoothly. Do not place full load on the engine until the oper- ating temperature has been reached.
Operation Driving instructions Treadwear indicators (TWI) are required by law. These indicators are located in six places on the tread circumference and become visible at a tread depth of approx- imately 1 / 16 in (1.6 mm), at wh ich point the tire is considered worn and should be replaced.
Operation Driving instructions Tire traction The safe speed on a wet, snow covered or icy road is always lower than on a dry road. You should pay particular attention to the condition of the road whenever the outside temperatures are close to the freezing point.
Operation Driving instructions CLS 500 Your vehicle is factory equipped with “V”-rated tires, which have a speed rating of up to 149 mph (240 km/h). An electronic speed limiter prevents your vehicle from exceeding a speed of 130 mph (210 km/ h).
Operation Driving instructions Road salts and chemicals can adversely affect braking efficiency. Increased pedal force may become necessary to produce the normal braking effect. Depressing the brake pedal periodically when traveling at length on salt-strewn roads can bring road-salt-impaired braking efficiency back to normal.
Operation Driving instructions Standing water Passenger compartment Driving a broad Abroad, there is an extensive Mercedes-Benz service network at your disposal.
Operation Driving instructions Telephones and two-way radios Radio transmitters, such as a portable tele- phone or a citizens band unit should only be used inside the vehicle if the y are con- nected to an antenna that is installed on the outside of the vehicle.

Operation Tires and wheels Tread dept h Do not allow your tires to wear down too far. Adhesion properties on wet roads are sharply reduce d at tread depths under 1 ⁄ 8 in (3 mm).
Operation Tires and wheels Direction of rotation Unidirectional tires offer added advan- tages, such as better hydroplaning perfor- mance. To benefit, however, you must make sure the tires rotate in t he direction specified. An arrow on the sidewall indicates the intended direction of rotation (spinning) of the tire.
Operation Tires and wheels 1 Driver’s door B-pillar Following is a discussion on how to work with the information contained on the two placards with regards to loading your vehi- cle.
Operation Tires and wheels The placard showing the load limit informa- tion is located on the dr iver’s doo r B-pillar. If your vehicle is equipped with the Tire and Loading Information placard (Example A), locate the statement “The combined weight of occupant s and cargo should never exceed XXX kilograms or XXX lbs.

Operation Tires and wheels The TPMS only functions on wheels that are equipped with the proper electronic sensors. It monitors the tire inflation pres- sure, as selected by the driver, in all four tires. A warning is issu ed to alert you to a decrease in pressure in one or more of the tires.
Operation Tires and wheels Wa r n i n g ! G The TPMS does not in dicate a warning for wrongly selected inflat ion pressures. Always adjust tire inflation pressure according to the placard on the driver’s door B-pillar or, if available, the supplemental tire pressur e in- formation on the inside of the fuel filler flap.
Operation Tires and wheels Reactivating Advanced TPMS* The TPMS must be reactivated when you have adjusted the tire inflation pressure to a new level (e.g. because of different load or driving conditions). The TPMS is then recalibrated to t he current tir e inflation pressures.

Operation Tires and wheels Summer tires 앫 At the tire manufacturer's option, any tire with a speed capability above 149 mph (240 km/h) can include a “ZR” in the size designation (for exam- ple: 245/40 ZR18). To determine the maximum speed capability of the tire, the service description for the tire must be referred to.
Operation Tires and wheels All-season and winter tires Load identification 1 Load identification In addition to tire load rating, special load information may be molded into the tire sidewall following the letter designating the tire speed rating 1 ( 컄 page 326).
Operation Tires and wheels DOT, Tire Iden tification Nu mber (TIN) U.S. tire regulations require each new tire manufacturer or tire retreader to mold a TIN into or onto a sidewall of each tire produced.
Operation Tires and wheels Tire type code The code 4 ( 컄 page 327) may, at the option of the manufacturer, be used as a descriptive code for identifying significant characteristics of the tire. Date of manufacture The date of manufacture 5 ( 컄 page 327) identifies the week and year of manufac- ture.
Operation Tires and wheels Maximum tire inflation pressure 1 Maximum permissible tire inflation pressure This is the maximum permissible tire inflation pressure for the tire. Always follow the recommended tire inflation pressure ( 컄 page 311) for proper tire inflation.
