18 C HAPTER 1: I NTRODUCING THE S WITCH 3300 XM, SM, TM, MM Network Configuration Examples The following illustrations s how some examples of h ow the Switch can be used in your network.
Network Configuration Examples 19 Switch as a Collapsed Backbone Switch The example in Figure 8 shows how a Switch 3300 TM stack can act as a backbone for both shared and switched network segments.
20 C HAPTER 1: I NTRODUCING THE S WITCH 3300 XM, SM, TM, MM Switch as a Desktop Switch The example in Figure 9 shows how the Switch can be used for a group of users that r equire dedicated 10Mbps or 100Mbps conn ections to the desktop.
Configuration Rules for Fast Ethernet 21 Configuration Rules f o rF a s tE t h e r n e t The topology rules for 100Mbps Fast Ether net are slightly differ ent to those for 10Mbps Et hern et. Figure 10 illustrates the key topology rules and provides examples of how they allow for large-scale F ast Ether net networks.
22 C HAPTER 1: I NTRODUCING THE S WITCH 3300 XM, SM, TM, MM The key topology rules are: ■ Maximum UTP ca ble length is 100 m (328ft) ove r Category 5 cable . ■ A 412m (1352ft) fiber run is allowed for connecting switch-to-switch, or endstation-to-switch, using half -duplex 100BASE-FX.
Configuration Rules for Gigabit Ethernet (SM and TM) 23 Configuration Rules for Gigabit Ether net (SM and TM) Gigabit Ether net is designed to run over four media: ■ Single-mode fiber optic cable, with connections up to 5km. ■ Multimode fiber optic cable, with connections u p to 550m.

2 I NSTALLING THE S WITCH This chapter contains the informat ion you need to install and set up the Switch. It covers the following to pics: ■ Choosing a Suitable Site ■ Rack-mounting ■ Placing .
26 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Choosing a Suitable Site The Switch is suited for use in an office envir onment where it can be mounted in a standard 19-inch equipment rack, or fr ee standing. Alter natively , the Switch can be rack-moun ted in a wiring closet or equipment room.
Rack-mount ing 27 Rack-mounting The Switch is 1U hi gh and fits in most sta ndar d 19-inc h racks. CAUTION: Disconnect all c ables from the Switch befor e continuing. Remove all self adhesive pads from the underside of the Switch if they have been fitted.
28 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Placing Units On T o po fE a c hO t h e r If the Switch units are fr ee-standing, up to four units can be placed one on top of the other . If you a r e mixing a variety of SuperStack Switch and Hub units, the smaller units must be positioned a t the top.
Stacking Units 29 Stacking Units Units in the Switch 1100/3300 family can be stacked together and then treated as a single manageable unit with one IP ad dress. T h eM a t r i xP o r to nt h er e a ro ft h eS w i t c hS M ,T Ma n dX Ma l l o w sy o ut o connect two Switch units back-to-back.
30 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH Figure 12 A stack of two units Stacking Up T o Four Units Y ou can stack up to f our Switch units using one Switch 3300 MM an d the appropriate number of Matrix Cables. Only one SuperStack 3 Switch 3300 MM unit can be fitted per stack.
Stacking Units 31 4 If you use the management softwar e of the units: ■ Ensure that all the units have the same version of man agement software ■ Ensure that you r e-configur e the stack-wide features on all the units For more information about management software, see “ Managing the Switch ” on page 34 .
32 C HAPTER 2: I NSTALLING THE S WITCH The Power -up Sequence The following sections describe how to get your Switch 3300 XM, SM, TM or MM powered-up and r eady for operation. Connecting a Redundant Power System Y ou can connect a SuperStack Advanced Redundant Power System (par t number 3C16071B) to the Switch.
Choosing the Co rrect Cables 33 If there is evidence o f a problem, see “ Solving Pr oblems Indicated by LEDs ” on page 34. Choosing the Correct Cables All of the ports on th e front of the Switch 3300 XM, SM, TM and MM are configured as MDIX (cr oss-over).

56 G LOSSARY information to forward packets based on th eir destination address. This process is known as filtering. broadcast A packet sen t to all devices on a netwo rk. broadcast s torm Multiple simultaneous broadcasts that typically absorb all the available network bandwidth and can cause a network to fail.
57 full duplex A system that allows packets to be transmitted and received at the same time and, in effect, doubles the potential throughput of a link. half duplex A system that allows packets to transmitted and received, but not at the same time. Contrast with full duplex .
58 G LOSSARY loop An event that occurs when two n etwork devices are connected by mor e than one path, thereby causing packets to r epeatedly cycle around the network and not reach their destination. MAC Media Access Contr ol. A protocol specified by the IEEE for determining which devices have access to a networ k at any one time.
59 server A computer in a network that is shared by multiple endstations. Servers provide endstations with access to shar ed network services such as computer files and printer queues. SLIP Serial Line Inter net Protocol. A pr otocol that allows IP to run over a serial line (console p ort) connection.
60 G LOSSARY unicast A packet sent to a single endsta tion on a network. WA N W ide Area Network. A communications network that covers a wid e area. A W AN can cover a la rge geographic area, and m ay contain several LANs within it.
