Play able Discs 7 Region Codes and Color Systems D VDs must meet the requir ements for Region Codes and Color Systems befor e you can use them with the D VD Pla yer . D VDs must be labeled for ALL r egions or for Region 1 in order to pla y on this D VD Pla yer .
8 Gener al Information Batter y Installation 1 Remo ve the batter y compartment lid on the rear of the remote contr ol by pressing in the tab , then lifting off the lid. 2 Place two AA batteries inside the batter y compar tment with their + and – ends aligned as indicated.
Hookups 9 Determining the best possible connection... The capabilities of y our existing equipment, especially your TV , will determine y our connection possibilities. How ev er , the f ollowing guidelines describe which options pr ovide the best picture and sound quality .
1 Connect the supplied video cable (which has y ellow markings) to the Pla y er’ s y ellow VIDEO (VIDEO OUT) jack. Connect the other end of the cable to the VIDEO IN jack on the RF modulator . The VIDEO IN jack on the RF modulator is usually yello w and might be labelled VIDEO , CVBS, COMPOSITE, or B ASEB AND .

Hookups (cont’ d) 15 Connecting to a TV and a Stereo (Stereo has Dolb y ® Digital or MPEG2) 1 Connect the CO AXIAL jack of the D VD Pla yer to the CO AXIAL DIGIT AL AUDIO IN jack on y our Stereo . Use an appr opriate digital audio cable (not supplied).
16 Quick Disc Playback There ar e many pla yback features and options a vailable on Discs. After familiarizing yourself with the D VD Play er , see pages 20 and f ollowing to try additional featur es. 1 Press ST ANDBY -ON y y or PO WER y y to turn on the D VD Pla yer .
Remote Contr ol Buttons 17 Number Buttons Press to select n umbered items in a menu. During pla yback, press the Number buttons to select a Chapter (within the curr ent Title) or T rack f or pla yback. Details are on page 20. RETURN/TITLE Button Press to g o back to a pre vious menu.
18 F r ont P anel ON light This light appears when the Pla yer’ s power is on and the Pla yer is ready to use. It flashes while the Pla yer is turning on. PLA Y light This light appears when a Disc is pla ying. It flashes when pla y is paused or during a search.
Rear P anel 19 Y Pb Pr (VIDEO OUT) jacks Connect component video cables (not supplied) here and to the Component Video In jacks of a TV . Details are on pag e 13. If your TV has Progressiv e Scan, set PR OGRESSIVE to ON at the Pla yer for the best pictur e.
20 Title/Disc Men us , Chapter/T r ack Selection Title/Disc menus 1 Press DISC MENU during D VD pla yback. The main Disc menu (or Root menu) will a ppear . The menu ma y list camera angles, spoken language and subtitle options, and Chapters for the Title.
Fast F orward and F ast Re verse 1 T o fast forward a D VD or Video CD , pr ess 2 repeatedly to select two , four , eight, 16, or 32 times the normal speed. Or , press and hold Next ¢ until the Fast F orward icon shows in the upper right corner of the TV screen.
22 Still Picture/F r ame-b y-Fr ame Playback, Time Search Still Picture/F rame-by-F rame Pla yback 1 T o pause a D VD or Video CD pictur e , pr ess P AUSE 8 on the remote contr ol during pla yback. 2 Press P A USE 8 repeatedl y to advance the still picture one frame at a time.
Zoom/Reduce , Camer a Angle 23 Zoom/Reduce Y ou can reduce or enlarge the video image during pla yback. 1 Press ZOOM r epeatedly during Disc pla yback to make the picture tw o, three, or four times larger . Or , k eep pressing ZOOM to reduce the pictur e to 1/2, 1/3, or 1/4 its normal size.
24 Repeat/Shuffle , Repeat A-B DV D VIDEO CD AUDIO CD Repeat/Shuffle Y ou may pla y a Chapter , T rack, Title, or entir e Disc repeatedly . 1 During Disc pla yback, pr ess REPEA T to choose a Repeat option. Depending on the type of Disc, y ou ma y choose to pla y the Chapter , T rack, Title , or ALL (Disc) repeatedl y .
D VD Audio Language 25 Some D VDs are r ecorded in multiple languages; some ma y ha ve extra audio options such as a director’ s commentar y or a music soundtrack. Y ou can choose the language or the soundtrack that you want to hear b y adjusting AUDIO in the PREFERENCE PAG E .
26 D VD Subtitle Language Some D VDs include subtitles. Choose the language you want for a vailable subtitles by adjusting SUBTITLE in the PREFERENCE PA G E . T o do so , f ollow the steps below . Or , the easiest wa y to choose subtitles is to press the SUBTITLE button on the remote r epeatedly during D VD pla yback.
D VD Disc Menu Language 27 D VDs ha ve a Disc men u that allows you to choose options such as Audio Language, Subtitles, or other special features. Featur es var y among D VDs, so the menus ar e differ ent for every D VD . Some menus ma y be a vailable in multiple languages.
28 P arental P asswor d The P ARENT AL featur e limits viewing of D VDs. Y ou need a pass wor d to change the P ARENT AL settings or to pla y Locked Discs. T o set your passw ord, follow the steps belo w . T o adjust the P ARENT AL level so D VDs cannot play if the y exceed that lev el, see page 30.
Disc Lock 29 Not all D VDs are rated or coded by the Disc mak er . Y ou can specifically lock or unlock a D VD , regar dless of its rating. If y ou lock a specific D VD , you m ust enter your pass word befor e you can watch the D VD . Pass word details are on page 28.
30 P arental Le vels Y ou can set the Play er to block or allow pla yback according to the D VD movie rating. If someone tries to pla y a D VD whose rating exceeds the lev el you selected, P ARENT AL VIOLA TION ma y appear on the TV screen. Some D VDs ma y give you the option of entering y our passwor d to allow pla yback.
Pr ogr am 31 2-6 1 4-5 AUDIO CD VIDEO CD DV D Y ou may pla y T racks or Chapters in an or der you specify instead of normal order (1, 2, 3, etc.). The order y ou set is a Program. For example, if y ou want to set up an Audio CD so T rack 12 will pla y first, put T rack 12 in Pr ogram position number one (1).
32 Pre view Some Video CDs or Super Video CDs ma y contain pre view or introductory information. If you ar e not sure of the contents of a Video CD or its T racks, use the Pre view features to see the content of the T racks. Not all Video CDs contain this information.
Navig ator 33 This D VD Pla yer can pla y some Compact Disc-Recordable (CD-R) discs that you r ecord on your computer . These CD-Rs ma y contain pictures in a JPEG format or audio files/tracks in an MP3 format. For example, you ma y ha ve photographic film dev eloped by a retailer that places the pictur es on a CD-R for y ou.
34 JPEG and MP3 F eatures General Information on CD-R and CD-R Ws ● When you mak e CDs to pla y on this D VD Pla yer , the Disc should ha ve at least 6-10 pictures or 2-3 MP3 m usic files. Make sur e there are at least 3 MB (three megab ytes) of information on the Disc.
• D VDs only play in the format in which they were recorded. For example, if the D VD case says the D VD is recorded in Letterbox or Widescreen format, you may play the D VD only with the black bar s showing at the top and bottom of the widened picture.
36 Smar tPictur e TM , Pictur e Setting Just as y ou can adjust your picture on y our TV , you can adjust some picture elements at the D VD Pla yer . Choose a pictur e setting that best displa ys the Disc you ar e playing. This featur e is known as SmartPicture and can be adjusted by follo wing these steps.
Smar tPictur e TM , Pictur e Setting (cont’ d) 37 8 An adjustment scale will appear on the TV scr een. Press 1 or 2 to adjust the element you selected. • For BRIGHTNESS, choosing a more positiv e value brightens the color on the screen and seems to ad d white to the picture.
38 TV T ype , Pr ogr essive Scan 1,5 2-4 TV T ype D VDs are r ecorded in a color system, usually NTSC or P AL. NTSC is the most common in the United States. Y our TV also has a color system. This Pla yer is compatible with NTSC and P AL. Ho we ver , the color system of the D VD , the TV , and the Pla yer should match.
Analog Output 39 Adjust DO WNMIX according to how y ou connected the Pla yer to y our TV and/or Stereo . Balance the volume during pla yback by adjusting the Dynamic Range Contr ol (D .R.C .). 1 Press SY STEM MENU. 2 Press 2 to select the AUDIO SETUP P A GE icon at the top of the menu.
If you connected the D VD Pla yer to a Stereo using the CO AXIAL jack as shown on page 15, you need to adjust the DIGIT AL OUTPUT (audio) setting as described below . If y ou are not using the CO AXIAL jack, no adjustment is necessar y . 1 Press SY STEM MENU.
LPCM Output 41 If you connected the D VD Play er to a Stereo using the CO AXIAL jack as shown on page 15, you ma y need to adjust LPCM OUTPUT . Discs are r ecorded in a certain sampling rate . The higher the sampling rate , the better the sound quality .
42 Sound Mode , 3D Sound Sound Mode Select the sound mode that matches the type of music y ou pla y most often. These preset sound modes adjust the fr equency bands of the audio to enhance your fa vorite m usic style. 1 Press SY STEM MENU. 2 Press 2 to select the AUDIO SETUP P A GE icon at the top of the menu.
Display Language , Closed Captions 43 Helpful Hint • If you have French or Spanish menus and need English: 1) Press SYSTEM MENU. 2)The first icon on the left (P A G .CONFIG .GENERAL or P A GE REGLAGES GENERA UX) will be selected. Press OK. 3) With IDIOMA MENUS or LANGUE OSD highlighted in green, press 2 .
44 Screen Sav er The Screen Sa ver is the mo ving D VD logo that appears on y our TV screen when pla yback is stopped. It prev ents damage to your TV scr een caused by lea ving a still image on the TV too long. 1 Press SY STEM MENU. 2 The GENERAL SETUP P A GE will be selected.
D VD Player Def aults 45 Helpful Hint • Restoring the Defaults will reset the Play er’ s menus to English. T o restor e the original settings of the D VD Pla yer , follow the steps below . 1 Press ST OP 7 twice to stop Disc pla yback completely . 2 Press SY STEM MENU.
46 Helpful Hints If you ar e having pr oblems with your pr oduct, check this list of pr oblems and possible solutions befor e requesting service . Y ou ma y be able to solve the pr oblem yourself. Analog: Sound that has not been turned into numbers. Analog sound varies, while digital sound has specific numerical values. Analog sound is a vailable when you use the r ed and white audio jacks on your equipment. These jacks send audio thr ough two channels, the left and right.
