MA GMA Appendix A Bus Hierarchy 35 Appendix A Bus Hierarchy Bus Hier archy The following figure is r epresentative of the Magma PE6R4. This figure pictorially conve ys the overall PCI bus topology of the system. 6 Slot PCIe to PCI Topol ogy In general, we do not kno w what the actual Bus num bers are.
MA GMA 36 Appendix B Need More Slots? Appendix B Need More Slot s? Multiple PCI Expansion System Configurations The PCI Local Bus S pecification defines the PCI bus as a hier archical bus , where PCI to PCI Bridges (PPBs) may be used to ad d "levels" to the PCI bus hierarchy.
MA GMA Appendix B Need More Slots? 37 2. The 4 and 7 Sl ot Magma Expansi on Systems eac h add t wo (2) PCI to PCI Bridges to the PCI Local Bus. The 13 Slot a dds three (3) PCI to PCI Bridges to the PCI Local Bus. The PE6R4t adds one (1) bridge. T hese bridges are the comm unication paths between the PCI cards and th e computer resources.
MA GMA 38 Appendix B Need More Slots? Fan-Out For reasons described in bu llet #3 above, we recomm end using a fan- out configuration when you need to add successive PCI expansio n systems to the host computer.
MA GMA Appendix B Need More Slots? 39 Verify your configuration Before you start installi ng your PCI cards (refer to Chapter 4 Install Cards and Drives for more infor mation) , you should confirm that everything is in proper working order.
MA GMA 40 Appendix B Need More Slots? Daisy-Chaini ng Recognizing the t ypical insignificance of the performa nce variance between the “Fan-Out” and “Dais y-Chain ing” configuratio ns, the primary reason for using this one would be limitatio ns on physical spac e.
MA GMA Appendix B Need More Slots? 41 Combination Configurations Depending on your business requirement s, and your ph ysical space limitations, you can ad d additional Expa nsion System in multiple configurations, such as thes e. These com binati ons are only limited by the available slot types: PCIe or PCI.
MA GMA 42 Appendix B Need More Slots? PCI Card Conflicts If you determine that one PCI card is interfering with the operation of another card, first try reorganizing the cards on the motherboard. Moving the cards aroun d can change the order in which the cards ar e configured by the system du ring po wer-on.
MA GMA Appendix B Need More Slots? 43 Problems with 3 rd Party cards might only be trackable once you hav e identified the expansio n system containing the pr oblem card.
MA GMA 44 Appendix B Need More Slots? Finding the Problem Card Windows If you need help to determine which PCI card, or which expansion chassis, has the problem, you can “right-click” on the c ard with the and check the information contained in the “L ocation:” field.
