1 INTR ODUCTION Thank you f or purchasing an X-70A 3D . Its adjustable V ar iView™ 3D per- spective lets y ou rotate the underwater picture to accommodate specific viewing needs . In addition to the 3D views , the X-70A 3D also giv es yo u outstanding 2D detail using either the supplied 384 kHz transducer or an optional 192 kHz transducer .
2 T ransducer Location 1. The transducer must be placed in a location that has a smooth flo w of w ater at all times. If the transducer is not placed in a smooth flow of w ater , interf erence will sh.
3 T ransducer Assembly and Mounting The best wa y to install this transducer is to loosely assemb le all of the par ts first, place the transducer’ s brack et against the transom and see if you can mo v e the tr ansducer so that it’ s par allel with the ground.
4 3. Once you determine the correct position f or the ratchets , assemble the transducer as sho wn at left. Do not tighten the lock nut at this time . NUT MET AL W ASHER R UBBER W ASHERS MET AL W ASHER BOL T 4. Hold the transducer and brac ket assemb ly against the transom.
5 6. Route the transducer cab le to the sonar unit. If possible , route the transducer cab le awa y from other wir ing on the boat. Electr ical noise from the engine’ s wiring, bilge pumps, VHF radio wires and cables, and aerators can be pic ked up by the sonar .
6 PO WER CONNECTIONS The X-70A 3D works from a twelve-v olt batter y system. F or the best re- sults, attach the po wer cable directly to the battery . Y ou can attach the po wer cable to an accessory or power buss , howe ver y ou may hav e prob- lems with electrical interference .
7 KEYBO ARD The ke yboard is arranged f or con v enient oper ation. A ten-key k eypad on the right side of the screen lets you enter numbers . Arrow k eys beneath the ke ypad are used to adjust features . The keys in the left column are used to select menu f eatures.
8 DISPLA Y - General When the X-70A 3D is first turned on, the display looks similar to the one below . The 3D screen scrolls from r ight to left, with the scale on the right side of the screen. The current depth beneath the transducer shows in the upper right cor ner of the displa y .
9 screen, showing the distance behind the boat. If the speed/temperature sensor is not plugged into the X-70A 3D , then none of these will show . MODES OF OPERA TION The X-70A 3D shows a sonar picture of the underw ater wor ld in 3D , 2D , Bottom Depth View , and FasT rack™ modes .
10 All 2D modes show the bottom signal, structure, thermoclines, fish (both with and without the Fish ID f eature), baitfish schools, and more . The 3D view sho ws a 3D representation of the bottom, with Fish ID symbols only . The 2D mode shows more inf or mation, the 3D mode makes it easier to visualize the bottom contour .
11 OPERA TION The A utomatic and Sensitivity features used on the X-70A 3D are the same f or all modes of operation. This section will e xplain these f eatures. F or inf or mation on f eatures specific to diff erent modes, see the 2D or 3D operation sections .
12 T o adjust the sensitivity , press the SENS key . A menu appears on the right side of the screen as shown on the pre vious page. Press the r ight arrow k ey to increase it, the left arro w ke y to decrease it.
13 f eet (shown by the digital depth displa y), the unit will show a flat bottom at 45 f eet.) T o use the zoom feature, first press the ZOOM ke y , then press the k ey ne xt to the zoom menu that appears in the lo wer left corner of the display as shown at right.

15 lection This view sho ws all echoes in the traditional sonar graph displa y . Y ou can view echoes from an y two 384 kHz tr ansducer elements , or the 192 kHz transducer . (Note: 192 kHz operation requires an optional 192 kHz tr ans- ducer .) T o select the transducer element and place the X-70A 3D into the 2D mode, press the WINDOWS k ey .
16 f ew seconds and the menu will automatically disappear from the screen or press the CLR ke y to erase it. Manual mode When the X-70A 3D is in the manual mode, an y range can be selected. The unit will leav e the range setting you choose, b ut it won't keep the bottom on the displa y .
17 and your ne w upper limit will be at the top of the screen. T o change the lower limit, use the same steps as abov e, b ut press the ke y ne xt to the "Set Low er Limit" menu. Press the CLR ke y to erase these menus or w ait a fe w sec- onds and they will automati- cally disappear .
18 matically disappear from the screen or press the CLR ke y to erase it. 2D ZOOM - Manual Mode The zoom f eature works the same in manual as it does in automatic with two e xceptions. One, since the unit is in man ual, the unit won’t change the range to k eep the bottom signal on the display .
19 mation only . No fish, structure, or any echoes other than the bottom signal appear on this screen. Y ou can adjust the range , howe ver this is the only adjustment y ou can make on this screen. The X-70A 3D au- tomatically sets the sensitivity le vel.

21 The depth alarms sound a tone when the bottom signal goes shallow er than the shal- low alarm’ s setting or deeper than the deep alarm’ s setting. F or e xample, if you set the shallow alarm to ten feet, the alarm will sound a tone if the bottom signal is less than ten f eet.
22 low alarm sounds a tone. T o turn the shallow alarm off, press the MENU k ey , then press the ke y ne xt to the "Alar ms" label. Now press the k ey ne xt to the "Shal Alar m" menu until the chec k mar k mov es to the “OFF” bo x.
23 FISH ALARM The fish alarm sounds a distinctive tone when the X-70A 3D places a fish symbol on the displa y . A different tone sounds f or each of the four fish symbol sizes . T o tur n the fish alar m on, first press the MENU ke y , then press the ke y ne xt to the "Alarms" label.

25 change on the screen as you press the k eys. After you’ve made the ad- justment, press the CLEAR ke y to er ase the men u. 2D VIEW OPTIONS The 2D view has se v eral ad- justments that (with some e x- ceptions noted belo w) affect the 2D view screen only .
26 screen is turned on for the first time, the digital depth displa y is located at the top left cor- ner of the screen. This display comes from a separate digital sonar built into the unit. It dis- pla ys only the bottom depth. If it loses the bottom, the last known depth will flash on the displa y .
27 When the unit is in the 2D split- screen zoom mode , the zoom bar doesn’t normally show on the screen. The zoom bar shows the section of w ater on the right side of the screen that the zoom f eature displays on the left side. T o tur n the zoom bar on continuously , first press the MENU ke y .
28 T o display the char t cursor , press the MENU ke y . Next, press the k ey adjacent to the “2D View Options” label. Finally , press the ke y ne xt to the “Char t Cursor” menu. Press the CLR key to return to the sonar displa y . Use the up or down arro w keys to mo ve the cursor up or do wn to the desired depth.
29 diff erent GRA YLINE ® le vel, also . The lev el chosen by the X-70A 3D is usually adequate f or most conditions. Experi- ment with your unit to find the GRA YLINE ® setting that’ s best f or y ou. T o adjust GRA YLINE ® , press the MENU ke y twice, then press the ke y adjacent to the “Adjust Gra yline” label.
30 “Adjust Back Light Le vel” label. The screen shown at right ap- pears. Now press the left ar- row k ey to decrease the light le vel. Press the right arrow ke y to increase it. The percentage of back light in use changes as the arrow k e ys are pressed.
31 F or example, press the k ey ne xt to the "Depth" label two times to s witch from f eet to meters. This mov es the check mark two times from the “Ft” to the “M”.
32 The ASP f eature has two le v- els - Low and High. If you ha ve high noise le vels, try using the “High” ASP setting. Howe ver , if you are ha ving trouble with noise , we suggest that you take steps to find the interf er- ence source and fix it, rather than continually using the unit with the high ASP setting.
33 mark is on the desired range. Press the CLR ke y to e xit the menu. RESET DIST ANCE LOG The X-70A 3D can displa y the log (distance trav elled) in the digital block if the optional speed/temperature sensor is installed. This f eature star ts counting distance as soon as the unit is turned on.
34 3D SIMULA T OR The X-70A 3D has a built-in sim ulator f or the 3D display . When this simu- lator is turned on, a realistic 3D view scrolls across the screen. The digital depth displa y shows the simulated bottom depth, and fish symbols ap- pear on the displa y .
35 TROUBLESHOO TING If your unit is not w or king, or if you need technical help , please use the f ollowing troubleshooting section bef ore contacting the f actor y customer service depar tment. It may sa v e y ou the troub le of returning your unit.

Check the battery voltage . If the voltage drops , the unit’ s transmitter pow er also drops, reducing its ability to find the bottom or targets .
37 NOISE A major cause of sonar problems is electrical noise. This usually appears on the sonar’ s displa y as random patter ns of dots or lines. In sev ere cases, it can completely cov er the screen with black dots , or cause the unit oper- ate erratically , or not at all.
