Chapter 1 Getting Started 7 Music, audiobooks, podcasts, video content , and pur chased applications are synced from your iT unes librar y . If you don ’t already have c ontent in iT unes, the iTune s Store (available in some c ountries) makes it easy to purchase or subscribe to conten t and download it to iT unes.

Applications P ane Use the Applications pane to s pecify which App Store applications you w ant installed on iP od touch. Any applications downloaded directly to iP od touch are automa tically backed up to your iT unes library when you sync.

Y ou can also tr y MobileMe, free for 60 day s. Go to www.me .com. Add an accoun t on iPod touch: 1 F rom iPod touch ’ s Home screen, tap Settings.
Push A ccounts MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, and Y ahoo! Mail are known as “push ” accounts. When new information is av ailable, such as the arrival of an email message , the inf ormation is automatically deliv ered (pushed) to iP od touch.

Notes Jot notes on the go—reminders , grocery lists, brilliant ideas. Send them in email. Settings Adjust all iP od touch settings in one convenien t place. Set your own volume limit for listening comfort. Set your wallpaper , screen brightness, and settings for network, mail, web , music, video, photos, and more.
Chapter 2 Basics 19 Y ou can create up to nine screens . The number of dots above the Dock shows the number of screens you ha ve, and indicates which screen y ou are viewing. Switch to another Home scr een: Flick left or right. Reset your Home screen t o the default layout: Choose Settings > General > Reset and tap Reset Home Screen Lay out.

Chapter 2 Basics 23 Enter te x t: 1 T ap a text eld, such as in a note or new contact, to bring up the keyboard. 2 T ap keys on the k eyboard. Start by t yping with just your index nger . As you get more procient, you can type more quickly using two thumbs.
T urn interna tional keyboards on or o : 1 In Settings, choose General > International > Keyboards. 2 T urn on the keyboards you want. Languages with more than one keyboard, such as Japanese and Chinese , indicate the number of keyboards available.
Chapter 2 Basics 25 When Simplied or T raditional Chinese handwriting formats are turned on, you can enter Chinese char ac ters with your nger , as shown: Dictionar y F or many languages, i P od touch has dictionaries to help you type. The appropriate dictionar y is activated automatically when y ou selec t a supported k eyboard .
Edit text: T ouch and hold to see a magnied view , then drag t o position the inser tion point. Connecting to the Int ernet iP od touch connects to the Internet via Wi-Fi networks. iPod t ouch can join AirPort and other Wi-Fi networks at home , at work, or at Wi-F i hotspots around the world .

If you listen to part of a podcast or audiobook, your place in the story is included if you sync the conten t with iTune s. If you star ted listening to the story on iPod t ouch, y ou can pick up where you left o using iT unes on your computer—or vice versa.

Chapter 3 Music and Video 33 If you’ re using an application, the playback controls appear on top of the applica tion. After using the controls , you can close them or tap Music to go to the Now Playing screen. If iP od touch is locked, the controls appear onscreen, then disappear automatically after you nish using them.
Brow sing Album Cov ers in Cov er Flow When you ’ re browsing music, you can rotate iP od touch sideways to see y our iTune s conten t in Cover F low and browse your music by album artwork. See conten t in Cover F low Rotate iP od touch sideways. Browse album c overs Drag or ick left or right.
Chapter 3 Music and Video 35 Viewing All T racks on an Album See all the tracks on the album that contains the curr ent song: From the Now Playing screen tap . T ap a track to play it. T ap the album cover thumbnail to return to the Now Playing scr een.
Refreshing a playlist crea tes a playlist of di erent songs based on the song you picked. Y ou can refresh any Genius playlist , whether it w as created in iT unes and synced to iP od touch, or created directly on iP od touch. Base the Genius playlist on a new song: In the playlist, tap New , then pick a new song.
Chapter 3 Music and Video 37 Playing Videos Play a video: T ap V ideos and tap the video. Display pla yback controls: T ap the screen to show the controls . T ap again to hide them. Con trolling Video Playback Videos play in widescreen to take full advan tage of the display .
Scale a video to ll the screen or t to the screen T ap to make the video ll the screen. T ap to make it t the screen.Y ou can also double-tap the video to toggle between tting and lling the screen. When you scale a video to ll the screen, the sides or top may be cropped fr om view.
Chapter 3 Music and Video 39 Deleting Videos from iP od touch Y ou can delete videos from iP od touch to save s pace. Delete a video: In the videos list, swipe lef t or right over the video , then tap Delete.
Change the browse butt ons: T ap M ore and tap Edit, then drag a button to the bottom of the screen, over the button you want t o replace. Y ou can drag the buttons at the bottom of the screen left or right to rearrange them. T ap Done when you nish.
41 iT unes Wi-Fi Music St ore Y ou can search for , browse, preview , purchase, and download songs and albums from the iT unes Wi-Fi Music Stor e directly to iPod touch. Y our purchased content is automatically c opied to your iT unes librar y the next time you sync iP od touch with your computer .
Browse f eatured songs and albums: T ap F eatured and select a categor y at the top of the screen. Browse t op ten songs and albums: T ap T op T ens, then choose a categor y and tap T op Songs or T op Albums.

Find out wha t song is playing: T ap Starbucks. The currently playing song appears at the top of the screen. T ap the song to see the album the song is on and the other songs on the album. View Recently Pla yed and other Starbucks playlists: T ap Starbucks, then choose Recently Play ed or one of the Starbucks playlists.

Browse f eatured applications: T ap Featured and select a featur ed categor y at the top of the screen. Browse b y categor y: T ap Categories and select a categor y to see a list of applications.
Chapter 4 iT unes and App Store 47 Browse the t op 25 applications: T ap T op 25 , then scroll through the list of applications. Search for applications: T ap Search, tap the search eld and enter one or more wor ds, then tap Search.
Info Screen T ap any application in a list to see more inf or mation, such as the application ’ s price, reviews, and other information. If you’ ve already installed the application, “Installed” appears in place of the price on the Info screen.
Chapter 4 iT unes and App Store 49 See the status of downloading applications: After you begin downloading an application, its icon appears on your Home screen and shows the sta tus of the download and installation. If you need to turn o iPod touch or lea ve the area of your network connection, it’ s okay to interrupt the download .
Updating Applica tions Whenever you acc ess the App Store , it checks f or updates to applications you ’ve installed. By default, the App Store also aut omatically checks for updates every week. The App Stor e icon shows the total number of application updates a vailable.
Chapter 4 iT unes and App Store 51 V er ifying Pur chases Y ou can use iT unes to verify that all the music, videos, applications, and other items you bought from the iT unes Wi-Fi Music Store or App St ore are in your iT unes library . Y ou might want to do this if a download was in terrupted.
52 Safari lets you sur f the web and view webpages on iP od touch in the same way as if you were on y our computer . Y ou can create bookmarks on iPod touch and sync bookmarks with your computer . Add web clips f or quick access to your fav orite sites directly from the Home screen.
Chapter 5 Safari 53 Opening W ebpages Open a webpage: T ap the address eld, then t ype the web address and tap Go . I f the address eld is not visible , tap the sta tus bar at the top of the screen to quickly scroll to the address eld at the t op of the webpage.
See a link’ s destination address T ouch and hold the link. The address pops up next to your nger . Y ou can touch and hold an image to see if it has a link. Stop a webpage from loading T ap . Reload a webpage T ap . Return to the previous or next page T ap or at the bottom of the scr een.
Chapter 5 Safari 55 Entering T ext and Filling Out F orms Some webpages hav e text elds and forms to ll out. Bring up the keyboard T ap inside a tex t eld. Move to another t ex t eld T ap another tex t eld, or tap the Nex t or Previous button.
Sync bookmarks with MobileMe: In iP od touch’ s Settings, select Book marks in your MobileMe account. See “Setting Up Accounts ” on page 10 . Open a bookmarked webpage: T ap , then choose a bookmark or tap a folder to see the bookmarks inside.
57 Mail works with MobileMe, Microsoft Exchange, and many of the most popular email systems—including Y ahoo! Mail, Google email, and A OL—as well as other industr y- standard POP3 and IMAP email systems. Y ou can send and receive embedded photos and graphics, and view PDFs and other attachments.
3 T ap Cc/Bcc/From if y ou want to copy or blind copy the message t o others, or change the account you send the me ssage from. If you have more than one email accoun t, you can tap the F rom eld to change the account you ’ re sending from. 4 Enter a subject, then your message .
Chapter 6 Mail 59 On each account screen, you can see the number of unread messages in each mailbox. Number of unread messages T ap to see all your email accounts T ap a mailbox to see its messages.
Follo w a link T ap the link. T ex t links are typically underlined and blue. Many images are also links. A link can take you to a webpage , open a map , or open a new preaddressed email message . W eb and map links open Safar i or Maps on iP od touch.

Organizing Email Y ou can delete messages one at a time , or selec t a group to delete all at once . Y ou can also move message s from one mailbox or folder to another . Delete a message: Open the message and tap . Or tap Edit, then tap next to the message.
63 Maps Maps provides street maps , satellite photos, and hybrid views of locations in many of the world’ s countries. Y ou can get detailed driving directions and, in some areas, trac information.
A pin marks the location. T ap the pin to see the name or description of the location. T ap to get information about the location, get directions, or add the location to your bookmarks or contacts list Find y our current location: T ap . iP od touch uses Location Services to determine your current (appro ximate) location.
Chapter 7 More Applications 65 A pin drops down on the map , which you can then drag to any location y ou choose. Quickly move the pin to the area curr ently display ed: T ap , then tap Replace Pin. Zoom in to a part of a map Pinch the map with two ngers.
See the location of someone’ s address in your contacts list T ap in the search eld , then tap Con tac ts and choose a contact. T o locate an address in this way , the con tac t must include at least one address. If the contact has more than one address , you must choose the one you want to loca te.
Chapter 7 More Applications 67 Â T o view all the directions in a list, tap , then tap List. T ap any item in the list to see a map showing that leg of the trip . The approxima te driving time appears at the top of the screen. If trac data is available , the driving time is adjusted accordingly .
Highways are c olor-coded according to the ow of trac: Gra y = No data currently available Red = less than 25 miles per hour Y ellow = 25–50 miles per hour Green = more than 50 miles per hour .

Chapter 7 More Applications 73 View a photo in landscape orientation: Rotate iP od touch sideways. The photo reorients aut omatically and, if it’ s in landscape format, expands to t the screen. Zoom in on part of a photo: Double-tap where you want to zoom in.
See the next or previous photo: Flick left or right. Or tap the screen to show the controls , then tap or . Slideshows Y ou can view your photos as a slideshow , complete with background music. View photos in a slideshow: Choose a photo album, then tap .
Chapter 7 More Applications 75 Y ou can also choose from several wallpaper pictures included with iP od touch by choosing Settings > Wallpaper > W allpaper from the Home screen. Saving Images from an Email Message or W ebpage Y ou can add images attached to an email message or webpage t o your Photo Library .
Calendar Calendar lets you view your ev ents in a continuous list, by day , or by mon th. Sync iP od touch with the calendars on your computer . Mak e, edit, or cancel appointments on iP od touch, and have them synced back to your c omputer . If you have a Microsoft Exchange accoun t, you can receive and res pond to meeting invitations.

Respond to an in vitation in Calendar: 1 T ap a meeting invitation in the calendar , or tap to display the Even t screen and tap an invitation. T ap “Invitation from ” to get contact information f or the meeting organizer . T ap the  email address to send a message t o the organizer .

W eather Use W eather to get the current temperature and six-da y forecast for one or more cities around the world . T o use Weather , iP od touch must join a Wi-F i network that is connected to the Internet. See “Connecting to the Int er net” on page 26.

Clock Clock lets you see the time in di erent places , set an alarm, use a stopwatch, and set a timer . W orld Clocks Y ou can add clocks to show the time in other major cities and time zones ar ound the world. View clocks: T ap World Clock. If the clock face is white, it ’ s daytime in that city .

If at least one alarm is set and turned on, appears in the iP od touch status bar at the top of the screen. T urn an alarm on or o : T ap Alarm and turn any alarm on or o .
Nike + iP od When activated in Settings, the Nike + i P od application appears on the Home screen for con trolling the Nike + i P od Sensor , sold separately . Nike + iP od is not available on the rst generation iP od touch. See the Nike + i P od documentation for s pecic instructions on activating and using Nike + iPod .
89 Settings allows you to customiz e iPod touch applications , set the date and time, congure your netw or k connection, and enter other prefer ences for iP od touch. Wi-F i Wi-Fi settings det er mine whether iP od touch uses local Wi-Fi networks to connect to the Internet.
F orget a network, so iPod touch doe sn’ t join it automatically: Choose Wi-Fi and tap next to a network you ’ve joined before. Then tap “For get this Network.” Join a closed Wi-Fi network: T o join a Wi-Fi network that isn ’t shown in the list of scanned networks, choose Wi-F i > O ther and enter the network name .
Chapter 8 Settings 91 Note that setting P ush to OFF or Fetch t o Manually in the Fetch New Data scr een overrides individual accoun t settings. Brightness Screen brightness a ects batter y life. Dim the screen to extend the time before you need to recharge iP od touch, or use A uto-Brightness.
Sounds Adjust alerts volume: Choose General > Sounds and drag the slider . Or , if no song or video is playing use the volume butt ons on the side of i P od touch.
Chapter 8 Settings 93 Location Services Location Services allows applications such as Maps to gather and use data indicating your location. Location Ser vices does not correlat e the data it collects with your personally identiable information.
After ten failed passcode attempts , your settings are reset to their defa ults and all your information and media on your iP od touch is permanently removed by ov er writing the data stored on iP od touch. Important: Y ou can’t use iP od touch while data is being overwr itten.
Chapter 8 Settings 95 Date and Time These settings apply to the time sho wn in the status bar at the top of the screen, and in world clocks and calendars. Set whether iP od touch shows 24-hour time or 1 2-hour time: Choose General > Date & Time and turn 24-Hour Time on or o .
Intern ational Use the International settings to set the language f or iPod t ouch, turn keyboards for di erent languages on or o , and set the date, time, and telephone number formats for your region. Set the language for iP od touch: Choose G eneral > International > Language , choose the language you want t o use, and tap Done.
Chapter 8 Settings 97 Reset the Home screen lay out: Choose General > Reset and tap Reset Home Screen Layout. Reset the location warnings: Choose General > Reset and tap Reset Location W arnings. Locations warnings are the r equests made by applications (such as Camera and Maps) to use Location Services with those applications.
Video Video settings apply to video content , including ren ted movies. Y ou can set where to resume playing videos tha t you previously star ted , turn closed captioning on or o , and set up iP od touch to play videos on your T V .

 T o adjust SSL and password settings, tap Adv anced. Ask your network administrat or or Internet service provider for the correct settings. Delete an account from iP od touch: Choose “Mail, Contacts, Calendars,” choose an account, then scroll down and tap Delete Account.
Chapter 8 Settings 101 Set the default email account: Choose “Mail, C ontacts, Calendars” > Default Acc ount, then choose an account. This setting determines which of your acc ounts a message i.
General Y ou can use Google or Y ahoo! to per form Internet searches. Select a search engine: Choose Safar i > Search Engine and select the search engine you want t o use. Security By default, S afari is set to show featur es of the web , such as some movies, animation, and web applications.
