8 Quick Start F our Steps to Playing Music on iP od mini T o set up i P od mini, you install software from the iP od CD , and import songs from your music CD collection or purchase songs from the iT unes Music Store (a vailable in some countries only).
Quick Start 9 Step 3: Connect iP od mini to Charge the Batter y and T ransfer Music Connect iP od mini to a high-power USB 2.0 port on your computer using the included iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable. When you connect iPod mini t o your computer , iT unes opens.
10 Quick Start Important: Be sure to connect iP od mini to a high-power USB 2.0 port directly on your computer , or to a pow ered USB 2.0 hub that’ s connected to your computer . iP od mini won ’t work if it’ s connec ted to a low-pow er USB 2.0 port, such as those sometimes found on keyboards or other peripherals.
Quick Start 11 Step 4: Play Music When the song transfer is complete and you ’ re ready to disconnect iP od mini, squeeze both sides of the Dock connector to disconnect the cable from iPod mini. Then use the Click Wheel and Select button (in the center of iP od mini) to browse for a song.

Using iPod mini 17 Making Playlists on iP od mini Y ou can set iPod mini to play the songs y ou want in the order you want. When you create a list of songs on your iP od mini, the songs appear in an On-The-Go playlist. T o create an On-The-Go playlist: 1 Highlight a song and press and hold the Select button until the song title flashes.
18 Using iPod mini T o transfer On-The-Go playlists to y our computer: n If iPod mini is set t o transfer songs automatically (see page 26), and you create an On-The-Go playlist, the playlist automatically transfers to iT unes when you connect iP od mini.
Using iPod mini 19 Note: If your computer doesn ’t hav e a USB 2.0 port but has a FireWire 400 (IEEE 1 394) port, you can use an iP od D ock Connector to F ireWire Cable (av ailable for purchase at www .ipod.com/store). By default, iP od mini imports songs automatically when you connect it to your computer .
20 Using iPod mini T o eject iPod mini: n Select iPod mini in the iT unes Source list and click the Eject button. If you’ re using a Mac, you can also eject iPod mini by dragging the iP od mini icon on the desktop to the Trash.
Using iPod mini 21 Connecting iP od mini Using the iP od mini Dock (A vailable Sepa rately) The iP od mini Dock holds iPod mini upright as it char ges or transfers music. Connect the Dock to your computer using the iP od Dock Connector to USB 2.0 Cable , then put iP od mini in the Dock.
22 Using iPod mini T o play music from iP od mini using the Dock: 1 Place iP od mini in the Dock. 2 Connect the speakers or stereo to the Dock Line Out port using an audio cable with a 3.5 millimeter st ereo miniplug. 3 Use the iP od mini controls to play a song .
Using iPod mini 23 About iT unes iT unes is the software application you use to manage the music on your comput er and transfer music to iP od mini. When you connect iP od mini to your computer , iT unes opens automatically .
24 Using iPod mini About the iT unes Music Store Using iT unes, you can preview , purchase, and download your favorite songs from the iT unes Music Store (a vailable in some countries only).
Using iPod mini 25 A song encoded using Apple Lossless f ormat has full CD-quality sound, but takes up only about half the amount of space as a song encoded using AIFF or W A V format. The same song encoded in AAC or MP3 format takes up ev en less space.
26 Using iPod mini About Smart Playlists Using iT unes, you can automatically create customized Smart Playlists from the songs in your library . Y ou can create a Smar t Playlist that includes only certain genres of music, songs by certain artists, or songs that match particular criteria.
Using iPod mini 27 T o update iPod mini with only c ertain songs: 1 In iT unes, check the boxes next to songs you want to transf er (by default, all songs are checked). 2 Select iPod mini in the iT unes Source list and click the Options button. 3 Select “Only update checked songs.

30 Using iPod mini Listening to P odcasts With iT unes 4.9, iPod mini supports listening to podcasts. P odcasts are downloadable radio-style shows delivered over the Int ernet. Y ou can subscribe to podcasts, download them using the iT unes Music Store , transfer them to your iP od mini, and listen to them at your conv enience.
Using iPod mini 31 Updating P odcasts Y ou can transfer podcasts to your iP od mini, or you can set iP od mini to automatically transfer all updated podcasts or selected podcasts. T o update podcasts: 1 In iT unes, selec t iP od mini in the Source list and click the Options button.
32 Using iPod mini Adjusting iP od mini S ettings Y ou can change settings directly on i P od mini in the Settings menu. Setting iP od mini to Shuffle Songs Y ou can set iPod mini to play songs or albums in random or der . Using iPod mini 35 Adding or Removing Items F rom the Main Menu Y ou can add often-used items to the iPod mini main menu. For example, you can add a “Songs” item to the main menu, so you don’t ha ve to select Music before you select Songs. T o add or remove items from the main menu: n Select Settings > Main M enu.
36 Using iPod mini Using the Extra Features of Y our iPod mini Using iP od mini as an Ex ternal Hard Disk Y ou can use iPod mini as a hard disk, to stor e and transfer data files. T o enable iPod mini as a har d disk: 1 In iT unes, selec t iP od mini in the Source list and click the Options button.
Using iPod mini 37 T o prevent iT unes from opening automatically when you c onnect iPod mini to your computer: 1 In iT unes, selec t iP od mini in the Source list. 2 Click the Options button and deselect “Open iTunes when attached .” Setting the Sleep Timer Y ou can set iPod mini to turn off aut omatically after a specific period of time.
38 Using iPod mini Importing Addresses , Phone Numbers, Calendar E ven ts, and T o-Do Lists Y our iPod mini can store contacts , calendar events, and to-do lists for viewing on the go. If you are running any version of Mac OS X earlier than 1 0.4, you use a Mac and iSync to update your inf ormation.
Using iPod mini 39 T o impor t contact or calendar information (using Mac OS X v1 0.4 or later): 1 Connect iP od to your computer . 2 In iT unes, selec t iP od in the Source list and click the Options button. T o update contacts, click C ontacts, click “Synchronize Address Book con tacts,” and selec t an option.
40 Using iPod mini T o update calendars, click Calendars, click “Synchronize iCal calendars,” and select an option: If you are using Windows, or you don’t wan t to use iSync to import your contacts or calendar information, you can transf er information to iP od mini manually .

42 Using iPod mini Charging the iP od mini Batter y iP od mini has an internal, nonremov able battery. If i P od mini isn ’t used for a while , the battery may need to be charged. The iP od mini battery is 80-percent charged in about an hour , and fully charged in about four hours.
Using iPod mini 43 If you can ’t charge using a USB port on your computer , you can char ge the battery using the optional iP od USB Po wer Adapter . T o charge the battery using the optional iPod USB P ower Adapter: 1 Connect the AC plug adapter to the po wer adapter (this may already be assembled).
44 Using iPod mini Battery States When iP od mini is not connected to a power source, a batter y icon in the top-right corner of the iP od mini screen shows about how much charge is left. If iPod mini is connected to a pow er source , the battery icon animates to show that the battery is charging.

46 Using iPod mini iP od Remote (A vailable Separately) T o use the i P od Remote, connect it to the iPod Remote port, then connect the Apple Earphones (or another set of headphones) to the remote . Use the buttons on the remote just as you would use the iP od mini buttons.
Using iPod mini 47 Apple Earphones iP od mini comes with a pair of high-quality earbud headphones. T o use the earbud headphones: n Plug them in to the Headphones port, then place the earbud in your ear as shown. W arning Listening to music at high volume ov er extended periods of time can damage your hearing.
