Ov er vie w 5 Over vie w Le xmar k has had many y ears of e xper ience in suc cessful card stoc k and label design, testing, and cross educ ation prog rams wi th print material v endors and con ver ters.
Genera l Inf or mation 6 General Inf ormation The Industr y The paper a nd label i ndustry includes s e v eral diff erent types of bus i nesses: manuf acturers , con v er ters , and distrib utors . Manuf acturers produce the base stoc k. If the base is f or labels , man uf acturers ma y ship it on large rolls or in a cut-sheet f orm.
Print Material T esting 7 Print Material T e sting Choosing print materials can seem comple x. U nf or tunately , it is not poss ibl e to write a simple “ cookbook ” e xplaining ho w to select print materials, because there are too man y va riables y ou need to addres s f or each specif ic appli cation.
Print Material T esting 8 Adjustab le T ray des igned f or the Optr a S, Opt ra T , and Le xmark T printer f amilies prints on a r ange of paper siz es includi ng A6 and 3-inch b y 5-inch inde x cards , 3- inch by 7-i nch punch cards and 4-inch b y 6- inch post card s.
Print Material T esting 9 P erforations and Die-Cuts If y our f or m has perf o rati ons, t he perf or ation l ine should s top 1.6 mm (0.06 in.) from each edge of the f orm to a voi d separating the f orm in the printer path, resulti ng in a jam. The location of t he perf o ration aff ects initia l pic k strength.
Print Material T esting 10 Basic Form Design When designi ng f or ms, incl ude a non-print area of 8.38 mm (0.3 3 in.) at the top an d bottom of the f or m and 6.35 mm (0.2 5 in.) on both sides of the f or m. In gener al, portrait orientation is the pr ef erred l a yout , especial ly if y ou are printing bar co des.
Card Stock 11 Car d Stoc k Card stoc k is a r igid , st iff material that can ha ve a wi de variety of constructions. Orientation of pape r fibers (g ra i n direction) , mois ture conten t, thic kness.
Grain Or ient at ion 12 Use the f ollowing tab le to compare the weights of v arious types of card stoc k. Depending on the printer , material thic ker than 0.30 mm (0.012 in.) ma y prese nt f eed reliability prob lems , and material t hic ker than 0.
Coatin gs 13 Most printer s f eed paper shor t-edge first. If y our printer suppor ts larger paper siz es, s uch as 11 x17 in. or A3 mm, it ma y f eed some paper siz es long- edge first . Ref er to y our printer document ation f or more inf or m ation.
Offset P owd ers 14 between 100 and 400 Sheffi eld points ( 150 to 250 is o ptimal). Using medi a higher than 300 Shef field could re sul t in printing degr adation. Offset P owder s W e do not recommend usin g offset powders or oth er f oreign materials t o speed drying.
Labels 15 Labels Labels (al so calle d pressur e sens iti v e materials) are mul ti- ply mat erials consi stin g of a “ sandwich ” of v arious combinat ions of f ace sheets (printab le st oc k), adhes iv es, and remo v a b le protectiv e bac ki ngs (liners) .
Printing on Labe ls 16 Prin ting on Lab els Use full label sheet s only . Pa r tial sheets (with areas e xposed by missi ng labels) can cause l abel s to peel off during printing, resul ting in a paper jam. P ar tial sheets can also contamin ate your printer and car tridge with adhesiv e and can void the printer and car tridge ser vice warr anties.
Dupl e xing P aper Lab els 17 P/N 56P2109. This wiper mak es it possib le to print on bot h sides o f paper label s specifical ly designed f or duple xing. In addition, you can u se this wiper to simple x paper labels and duple x paper in the same printer .
Label C ompon ents 18 Labe l Com ponent s Labels ar e composed o f three basic par ts: t he liner , t he adhesiv e, and the face s heet. Label s ma y also ha ve t opcoats that af f ect printing. Choosing appropriate materials f or each of these label components will help ensu r e reliab le pr inting.
Label C ompon ents 19 gloss appea rance . High gl oss, glaze d surf aces ma y increa se sk ew and are more difficult f or the printer ’ s f eed mechanism to han dle reli ab ly . Some Kr aft liners ma y produce a cceptab le resul ts; how ev er , we strongl y recommend e xtensive tes ting of pressur e sensit iv e constructions using Kr aft liners .
Label De si gn Gui d el ines 20 Face Shee t (Pr inta ble Stock) P aper , vin yl, and poly ester are the most common materials used f or printab le stoc k.
Label De si gn Gui d el ines 21 If zo ne coating is not used, w e recommend a stripped edge matrix. The stripped edge matrix varies with t he type of f ace stoc k, liner , and adhesiv e mater ials. Ref er to the f ollowing tab le f or stripped edge matrix gui delines.

Label De si gn Gui d el ines 24 Dual W eb Form s Constructing dual w eb f orms inv olves jo ini ng together rol ls of two diff erent materials (usuall y pressure sensitiv e paper and bond p aper) and t hen con v er ting to a cut sheet pr oduct. Thi s construction req uires a stripped edge matrix.
Label De si gn Gui d el ines 25 Vin yl and P oly est er Labels Viny l labels w ork we l l within speci fi ed desi gn paramete rs . Vinyls are heat sensitiv e, so the liners need to be thic k enough to absor b e xcess heat and pre v ent melting. A total strip matrix ma y cause adhesiv e contamination.
Label De si gn Gui d el ines 26 Due to the unique constructi on of integr ated forms, y ou ma y e xperience stac king prob lems in the output bin.
