Installing hardware options Order of ins tallation CAUTION—PO TENTIAL IN JURY: Th e printer weig ht is great er than 1 8 kg (40 lb) , and requ ires two or more trained p ersonnel to lift it safel y.
2 Label the trays with the su pplied tray numb er label s from t he top do wn. Note: The standa rd 25 0 ‑ sheet tray m ust be labele d as Tray 1. 3 Place the tr ay near the print er.

Note: When the printe r soft ware a nd any o ptions are installed, you m ay nee d to manu ally add the op tions in the printer driver to make t hem avai lable f or print jobs. Loading paper and specialty media This chapt er cov ers the s electio n and handling of paper and specialty m edia. P roper selectio n and loading of medi a can improv e how reliably d ocumen ts print. Fo r more info rmation , see “Avoiding jams ” on page 142 and “Sto ring pap er” on page 53.
Loading the 250 ‑ and 550 ‑ sheet tray The print er has one 250-sh eet tray (Tr ay 1) with an integ rated manual feeder. The 250-sheet tr ay, the 650-sheet duo tray, and the 55 0-shee t tray supp ort th e same pa per si zes and t ypes and are lo aded in the same way.
3 Squeeze, and then slide the lengt h guide tab to the correct position for t he size of the pape r being loaded. 1 2 Note: Use the paper size in dicato rs on the b ottom of the t ray to hel p positi on the g uide. 4 Squeeze, and then slide th e width guide tab to the corr ect position for the size of the pap er being loaded.
6 Load th e paper stack wit h the rec ommende d print able s ide faceup. 7 Place the paper guides secure ly against the edges of t he paper. 8 Ins ert th e tra y. 9 From the printer control pane l, set the pap er siz e and paper typ e in the Pape r menu to ma tch the paper loaded in the tray.

2 Open the multipu rpose feeder. 3 Pull the multipur pose feeder extender. Note: Guide the extender gently so that the multipurpose feeder is fully extended and open. 4 Prepare the paper fo r loading. • Flex the sheets of pap er back and forth to loosen them, an d then fan them.
• Flex a stack of envelopes back and forth to loosen them, and then fan them. Straigh ten the edges on a level surf ace. Warn ing— Poten tial Dama ge: Ne ver use envelopes with stamps , clasps, snaps, windows, c oated lini ngs, or self ‑ stick adhe sive s.
6 Load the paper, and then adjust the width guide to lightly touch the edge of the paper stack. • Load paper, card stock, and transparencies with the recommended printable side facedown and the top edge entering the p rinter first. • Load en velope s with the flap s ide up a nd aga inst the right side o f the pape r gui de.
One ‑ sided printing using a le tterhead Two ‑ sided printing using a letterhead ABC ABC • Load envelope with the flap side up and against the right side of the p aper guide. 2 Feed paper into the manual feeder on ly to the point where its leading edge can contact the paper gu ides.
Linkin g and u nlinkin g tray s When the paper s ize and paper type for any trays are the same, t he printer links those trays. When one linked tray become s empty, pap er will f eed fro m the ne xt link ed tray.
