Installing the printer software Using the installation softwa re CD (Windows users only) Using the CD that came with the printer: 1 Start Windows. 2 When the desktop appe ars, insert the software CD. The software installation screen appea rs. 3 Click Install .

Networking General networking Networking overview A network is a collection of devices such as computers, printers, Ethernet hubs, wireless access po ints, and rou ters connected together for communication through cables or through a wireless connection.
Scenario 1: Laptop and printer connected wirelessly with Internet • A computer is conn ected to a wire less router by an Ethernet cable. • A laptop and a prin ter are conne cted wirelessly to the router. • The network is conn ected to the Inte rnet th rough a DSL or a cable modem.
Scenario 3: Computer, laptop, and printer connected wirelessly without Internet • A computer, a laptop, and a printer are connected wirel essly to a wireless access point.
If you purchased the internal wire less print server sepa rately, the MAC address app ears on an adhesive labe l that came with the wireless print server. Attach the adhesi ve label to your printer so you will be able to find the MAC address when you need it.
On the computer that is attached to the print er: a Click Start Settings Printers or Printers and Faxes . b Right-click the Lexmark 4800 Series icon. c Click Sharing . d Click Shared As , and give the printer a distinctive name . e Click OK . 3 Locate the printer from the remote computer.
3 Press Enter . The IP address appears as four se ts of number s separated by pe riods, such as 192.168. 0.100. Assigning an IP address An IP address may be assigned by the network using DHCP. The print object, created at the end of the installation, sends all print jobs across the networ k to the printer using th is address.
6 Click Share this printer , and assign a name to y our print er. 7 Follow the directio ns on the computer screen until installa tion is complete. Windows 2000 or Windows XP users onl y: 1 For more information, see the setup information that came with your printer.
Types of wireless networks Networks can operate in one of two modes: infrastructure or ad hoc. Lexmark recomme nds setting up a network in infrastructure mode using the in stalla tion CD that came with the printer.
Advanced wireless setup Creating an ad hoc wirel ess network using Windows The recommended way to set up your wireless network is to use a wireless access poi nt (wireless router).
7 Select the Use Windows to configure my wireless network settings check box. 8 Under Prefer red Networks, delete any ex isting networks. a Click the n etwork to be removed. b Click the Remove button. 9 Click Ad d to create an ad ho c network. 10 In the Network Name (SSID) box, type the name you wa nt to give your wireless netwo rk.
Loading paper and original documents Loading paper 1 Make sure: • You use paper designed for inkjet printers. • If you are using photo, glossy, or heavyweight matte paper , you load it with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable side, see the instructions th at came with the paper.
• The paper guides rest against the edge s of the envelop es. Notes: • Do not load envel opes with holes, pe rforations, cutouts, or de ep embossing. • Do not use env elopes that have e xposed flap a dhesive. • Envelopes require more drying time.
Loading transparencies You can load up to 50 transparencies at a time . 1 Load transpar encies with the rough side facing you. I f the transpare ncies have a removable str ip, each str ip should face aw ay from you and down toward the pr inter. 2 Make sure: • The transparencies are lo aded in the center of the paper support.
3 Place the required stack of banner pa per on the top cover. 4 Feed the leading ed ge of the banner pa per into the printer first. W F I I P R I N T I N G 5 Make sure: • The paper is loaded in the center of the pa per support. • The paper guides rest against the edges of the paper.
Printing Printing basic documents Printing a document 1 Load paper. 2 With a documen t open, click File Print . 3 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup . 4 Adjust the settings. 5 Click OK . 6 Click OK or Print . Printing a Web page You can use the T oolbar to create a printer-friendly versio n of any Web page.
Printing photos or images from a Web page 1 Load paper. For best results, use ph oto or heavyweight matte paper, with the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the p rintable sid e, see the instructions that came wi th the paper.
Collating copies If you print multiple cop ies of a document, you ca n choose to print each copy as a set (co llated) or to print the cop ies as groups of pages (not collated). Collated Not collated 1 With a documen t open, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup .

Printing documents from a removable storage device 1 Make sure the printer i s connected to a computer by a USB cable, and both the printer an d the computer are on. 2 Insert a memory card int o a card slot, or insert a flash drive int o the PictBridge port on the front of the pr inter.
Printing specialty documents Choosing compatible specialty paper types • Heavyweight matte pap er —A photo pape r with a matte finish used for printing high-quality graphics. • Lexmark PerfectFinish TM Ph oto paper —A high-quali ty photo paper specifically designe d for Lexmark inkjet printers, but compatible wi th a ll inkjet printers.
Notes: • To avoid paper ja ms, do not force the card s into the printe r. • To prevent smudging, remove e ach card as it exits, and le t it dry before stacking. Printing a document as a poster 1 With a documen t open, click File Print . 2 Click Properties , Preferences , Op tions , or Setup .
Printing a booklet 1 Before you change any Print Properties settings, you must select the corre ct paper size from the program. You can print booklets u sing these pa per sizes: • Letter • A4 2 Load the paper. 3 With a documen t open, click File Print .
6 From the Paper Size se ction, select Paper and then select Custom Size . 7 Select the measu rement units to use . 8 Use the sliders, or type the size of the pa per loaded into the printer. 9 Click OK to close any printer software d ialogs that are open.
Printing on both sides of the paper Understanding the two-sided printing (duplexing) function The printer has a b uilt-in duplex unit tha t lets you print on both sides of the p aper automatica lly. This function is also known as two-sided printing or duplexing.
Note: Automatic two-sided printing (d uplexing) works only with pl ain paper in l etter and A4 sizes. If you want to print two-sided doc uments on another typ e or size of paper, use th e manual duple xing method. 1 Press A . 2 With a documen t open, click File Print .
5 From the Save Settings dr op-down menu , select Save your current settings . 6 Click a radio button next to the numb er of the location where you want to save your settings, then type a name for your settings in the selected box. Note: The first location contains Fa ctory Default Settings, which ca nnot be changed or deleted.
Note: Factory default settings can not be deleted. Resetting the printer to factory default settings You can reset your printer to the original settings without using the printer software. Note: Resetting to factory default settings will delete all printer setti ngs you selected.
Working with photos Using recommended paper For best results wh en printing phot os or other high-quality images, use Lexmark Photo Paper or Lexmark PerfectFinish Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Your pr int cartrid ges are not compatible with this type of paper.
From here You can Print Camera Selections Print Digital Print Order Fo rmat (DPOF) selections. This option appears only wh en there is a va lid DPOF file on your memory device.
3 If the PictBridge connection is successful, th e following message ap pears on the display: Camera Connected. Refer to Camera display or Camera owners manual for further information. After a few seconds, the followin g message appears: Use Camera to choose and print photos.

Notes: • The printer recognizes one memory card at a time. If yo u insert more than one memory card, a message a ppears on the display promp ting you to remove all memory cards inse rted. • If a USB flash drive is inserted t ogether with the memory card, a messag e appears on the display prom pting you to choose which me mory device to use.
If the printer is co nnected to a wireless network, y ou will be asked to se lect the computer th at you want to use. a Press or to select a computer. b Press . If you set a PIN during network se tup and are being asked for it: 1 Enter the PIN using the and to select a digit loca tion and the and to select a value for that digit.
10 If you want to eras e the photos from th e memory card, click Yes . Note: Make sure all the photo s have been copi ed before you select Yes to erase.
Transferring photos from a me mory card to a flash drive 1 Insert a memory card that contains the images you want to transfe r. 2 After th e memory c ard is det ected, pre ss . 3 Press repeatedly unti l Save Photos is highlighted. 4 Press . 5 Press or t o select USB Fla sh Drive .
Changing the Productivity St udio library preferences 1 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon. 2 From the Tools menu, click Preferences . 3 Click Library . From here, you can choose ho w you want to sort photos. You can also set the minimum file siz e for the photo to appear in the library.
8 Press to select Edit Photo . From here You can Brightness Adjust the brightness of a ph oto. Rotate Rotate a photo in 90-degree increm ents clockwise or counterclockwise. Crop Crop a photo. Auto Enhance Enhance a photo automatica lly. Remove Red Ey e Reduce the red-eye effect ca used by light reflection.
3 Click Image Res olution / Size . 4 Select Photo Size to select from a list of de fined photo sizes, or click Custom Size to enter a different photo size. Note: If you selected Photo Size , you can click R otate to rot ate your photo 90 degrees clo ckwise.
Enhancing a photo The Enhance feature lets you make subtle adjustmen ts to the brigh tness, contrast, and sh arpness of an image. 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit. 2 With an image o pen, click the Enhancements tab.
Changing the Bright ness / Contrast set tings of a photo 1 From the Productivity Studio Welcome Screen, click File Open to select the im age you wa nt to edit. 2 With an image open , click Enhancements . 3 Click Brig htness/Contrast . 4 Adjust the brightn ess and contrast settin gs.
Printing photos Printing photos from a CD or removab le storage device using the computer 1 Load photo paper wi th the glossy or printable side facing you. (If you are not sure which side is the prin table side, see the instructions that came with the paper.
8 To select multiple prints of a photo, or to select photo sizes other than 10 x 15 cm (4 x 6 in.), se lect the options you want in the tabl e. Use the drop -down list in the last column to view and select other sizes. 9 Click Print Now in the bo ttom right corner of th e screen.
14 From the Send Quali ty and Speed area of the screen, select the image size. 15 Click Create E-mail to create an e-mail message with your photo greetin g card(s) attached. Viewing a slideshow of photos on the control panel display 1 Insert a memory card or flash drive.

5 Click the Share tab to save or print your slideshow. 6 Click View Show in the lower-right corner of th e window to start th e slideshow. Note: You can exit th e slideshow any time by moving your cursor to the bottom center of the screen a nd clicking Exit Slideshow .
Copying Making a copy 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or repeatedly until Copy is highlighted . 4 Press or to select the number of copies. The number of copies is au tomatically set to 1.
6 Adjust the copy settings as n eeded. To make a bord erless copy, choose Border less under Resize. For more information, see “Understan ding the Copy Mode men u” on page 83. 7 After making your choic es, press to save your settings temporarily . 8 Press .
4 Press or to select the number of copies. The number of copies is au tomatically set to 1. 5 Press . 6 Press repeatedly unti l Resize is highlighted. 7 Press or to choose among th e following options: 50 percent, 100 percent, 200 percent, Custom, Fit to Page, 2x2 Poster, 3x3 Poster, 4x4 Poster, or Borderless.
6 Press repeatedly unti l Lighter/Darker is highlighted. 7 Press or to adjust the brightne ss of the co py. 8 Press to preview the copy. 9 Press to contin ue adjusting th e settings. 10 Repeat step 8 to step 9 as n eeded. 11 Press to save your settings temporarily.
Repeating an image on one page You can print the same image multiple times on o ne sheet of paper. This option is help ful in creating labels, decals, flyers, handouts, and so on. 1 Load paper. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass.
8 Press to save your settings temporarily. 9 Press . The printer scans th e first page of the original document. 10 When asked if you want to copy anothe r page, pres s to choose Yes . 11 Load the second page of the origina l document facedown on the sca nner glass, and th en press .
4 Press . From here You can Color Choose to copy in col or and black and wh ite. Quality Adjust the quality of a copy. You ca n choose among th e following options: Normal, Pho to, Auto, or Draft . Content Typ e Specify the type of document being copie d: Text and Graphics, Photo, Text Only, or Line Dra wing.
Scanning Scanning a document 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a computer, a nd both the printer a nd the computer are on. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or until Scan is highlighted.
4 Select the Document option. 5 Click Start . The scanned document is load ed into your default word processing application. You can now edit the document. Scanning text for editing The Optical Character Recognitio n (OCR) feature turns a scanned document in to text you can edit with a word- processing appl ication.
Making a color or black-and-white scan 1 Make sure the printer is co nnected to a computer, a nd both the printer a nd the computer are on. 2 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. 3 From the control panel, pr ess or until Scan is highlighted.

Scanning to a computer over a network using the control panel 1 Make sure: • The printer is connecte d to a network through a prin t server or through the wi reless network connection. • The printer, the print server (if used), and the computer rece iving the scan are all turn ed on.
7 From the Save or Edit screen me nu bar, click Save . 8 To save to another folder, cl ick Browse , and select a folder. Click OK . 9 To rename the file, enter the name in the File Name area. To assi gn the name as a prefix to a ll of your photos, select the Start all photos with File Name check box.

Scanning documents or images for e-mailing You can e-mail attached scanned images usin g your default e-mail applicatio n. 1 Load an original document fa cedown on the scanner glass. W F I I P R I N T I N G 2 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon.
Faxing Receiving a fax automatically 1 From the desktop, double-click the Productivity Studio icon. 2 From the Settings area in the left pane of the Welcome screen, click Setup and ma nage faxes . 3 From the Receiving Faxes screen in the Fax Solutions Software, select Automatical ly , if not already selected by default.
Maintaining the printer Installing print cartridges 1 Open the printer. 2 Press down on the cartrid ge carrier levers. W F I I P R I N T I N G 3 Remove the used prin t cartridge or cartrid ges. For more information, see “Removing a used print cartridge” on page 96.
5 Close the blac k cartridge carrier lid. 6 Remove the tape from the back and bo ttom of the color ca rtridge, and insert the cart ridge in the right carrier. Warning: Do not touch the gold co ntact area on the back or the metal nozzles on the bottom of the cartridge.
Removing a used print cartridge 1 Make sure the printer is on. 2 Lift the scanner uni t. The print cartridge carrier mo ves and stops at the loading po sition, unless the printer is busy. 3 Press down on the cartridge carrier la tch to raise the cartridge carrier lid.
To prevent the message from appearing a gain for the indica ted cartridge(s): • Replace your cartridge(s) with new Lexmark print cartridge(s). • If you are prin ting from a comput er, click Learn more on the message, select the check box, and click Close .
4 Using another clean section of the cloth, gently hold th e cloth against the con tacts for about three se conds, and then wipe in the d irection shown. 5 With another clean sectio n of the cloth, re peat step 3 and step 4. 6 Let the nozzles and contacts dry completely.
Cleaning the scanner glass 1 Dampen a clean, lint-free cloth with water. 2 Gently wipe the scanner glass clean. Note: Make sure all ink or corrective fluid on a document is dry before placing the document on the scanner glass. Cleaning the exterior of the printer 1 Make sure that the p rinter is turned off and un plugged from the wall outlet.
Notes: • For best results, use only Lexmark print cartridges. • For best results wh en printing phot os or other high-quality images, use Lexmark Photo Paper or Lexmark Perfectfinish TM Photo Paper. Do not use Lexmark Premium Photo Paper. Your print cartridges are not compatibl e with this type of pape r.
Troubleshooting If you set up your printer on a wireless ne twork, make sure: • The wireless network is working prop erly. • The computer and prin ter are both connected to the same wireless network. • The printer is within the range of the wireless network.
Disconnect and reconnect the power cord 1 Disconnect the power cord from the wall outlet, and the n from the printer. 2 Plug the cord all the way into th e power supply on the prin ter. 1 2 3 Plug the cord into an electr ical outlet that other electrical de vices have been using .
Reconnect power supply 1 Press to tur n the prin ter off. 2 Disconnect t he power cord from the wall outlet. 3 Gently remove the power supp ly from the printer. 4 Reconnect the power supply to the printer. 5 Plug the power cord int o the wall outlet. 6 Press to tur n the printe r on.
Check cartridges 1 Remove the print cartridges. 2 Make sure the sticker and tape have been removed. 1 2 3 Reinsert the cartridges. Check printer default and pause settings 1 Do one of the follo wing: • In Windows Vista, click Control Panel . • In Windows XP, click Start .
Removing and reinstalling the software If the printer is no t functioning pr operly, or if a communica tions error message ap pears when you try to use the printer, you may ne ed to remove and reinstall the printe r software. 1 In Windows Vista, click .

Wireless network prin ter does not print These are possible so lutions. Try one or more of th e following: Check power Make sure the light is on. Check cable • Make sure the power cabl e is connected to the printer and to th e electrical outlet . • Make sure the USB cable o r the installati on cable is not con nected.
4 Verify that XXXX_Series_nnnnnn_P1 is selected, where XXXX is the model series number of your printer and nnnnnn is the last six nu mbers of the MAC addre ss of your printer. Note: The MAC address is located at th e back of the printer be side the seri al number.

Checking the print cartridges Are the print cartridges properly installed? For more information, see “Installing print ca rtridges” on page 94. Are the sticker and tape re moved from the cartridg es? Lift the scanner unit. Press down on th e cartridge ca rrier latches to raise the cartridge carrier lids.
Make sure the cartridges are properly installed With the front of the printer facing you, check for proper pr int cartridge installation. If yo u are using a color cartridge, make sure it is properly installed in th e right carrier. If you are using a bla ck or photo cartridge, make sure it i s properly installed in the left carrier.
3 Click Solution Center . 4 If an exclamation point (!) appears on eith er of the print cartridges, the ink level is low. Install a new cartri dge. Glossy photo paper or tran sparencies stick together.
Printed characters are improperly formed or are no t aligned correctly Have you added spaces at the left margin? If the print is not aligned correct ly, make sure you have not added spaces by pressing Enter or the spacebar (hard- coded spaces). Do you need to align the pr int cartridges? The cartridges may be ou t of alignment.
