- 8 - Chapter 2 Install GNS-8000B 2.1 Install Hard Disk T o install hard disks to GNS-8000B , plea se make sure you ha ve the following items in place.
- 9 - Hard Disk Installati on Procedure It is highly recommended that you inst all disks of the same brand and same size on GNS-8000B . The server may function improperly if disks of different brands a nd size are inst all ed. Please refer to Chapter 2.
- 10 - 3. Place a hard disk in a hard disk tr ay . 4. T urn over the disk tr ay . Make sure the disk holes match the holes at the base of the tra y . F asten the disk wi th four flat head screws . 5. Insert the hard disk tra y to GNS-8000B. Then lock the tray with the hard disk lock.
- 11 - Install Rackmount Kit Please follow the steps below to in stall the rackmount kit of GNS-800 0B. 1. Attach brack ets ( a ) to both sides of GNS-8000 B in the front. 2. Lock the brack ets ( b ) to GNS-8000B. Then a ttach and fasten z -shape brack ets ( c ).
- 12 - 2.2 Hard Disk Recommendation List The following HDD models are verified by LEVELONE that are compatible with GNS-8000B. It is recommended to use the same brand and same si ze listed here for GNS-8000B if more than one hard di sk is installed. Other HDD br ands that are not tested by LEVELONE may or may not work properly with GNS-8000B .
- 13 - 2.3 Connect GNS-8000B to Office Network When connecting GNS-8000B to office network: 1. It is recommended to install GNS-8000B in LAN with DHCP server . 2. Y ou can use any PC in the same subnet to connect to the server by IE browser . 3. Y ou ma y also connect a CD/DVD burner to GNS-8000B for data backup and restore.
- 14 - T o install GNS-8000B in office ne twork, please follow the steps: a, b, c, d, e below . # T o use fail ov er or load balance func tion, please connect both LAN 1 and LAN 2 to switch/ h ub/ router . For furt her details, please refer to Chapter 6.

- 19 - Chapter 4 Quick Install Wizard Quick Install Wizard enables you to search f or all available GNS-8000B within the local network, and view the server name , IP ad dress, and workgroup etc. Y ou can also configure the disk name, date an d time, etc.
- 20 - Run Quick Install wiz ard shortcut on the desktop, the follow ing screen will be shown. Name of server IP address of server Windows workgroup j oined by server View the details of selected serv.
- 21 - Operation 1. Configure GNS-8000B Select a GNS-8000B displayed on Quick Install Wizard and click Con figure . Enter the administr ator password. Upon successful login, the following screen will appear . Enter the configuration values and click OK.
- 22 - For fur ther configur ation of the sys tem, please login the admini stration page of GNS-8000B via web browser . Note: Y ou may ha ve to restart GNS-8000B after cha nging the network configur ation. Set the name, date and time for GNS-8000B. The length cannot exceed 14 char acters.
- 23 - 2. View GNS-8000B details Select a GNS-8000B av ailable on Quick Install Wizard and click Details . The following screen w ill be shown:.

- 26 - Chapter 5 Start to Enjoy the Services of GNS- 8000B GNS-8000B provides the following powe rful se rvices and applications 5.1 File Server Y ou can mak e use of the following means to access and share the folders of GNS - 8000B easily: a.
- 27 - 5.3 Backup Server GNS-8000B provides versatile backup mechan isms to help you back up or restore disk data completely to enhance more e fficient and secure system management. The backup/ restore applicat ions are listed below: a. Remote Replication Re mote replication is a built -in backup feature of GNS-8000B .
- 28 - Chapter 6 Administer GNS-8000B When you have installed GNS-8000B and co nnected it to the network or PC, you can manage the server via web bro wser .
- 29 - 6.1 Access Administration Page Y ou can access GNS-8000B administr ation page by the following means: 3. Launch the web browser . Enter the IP address of GNS-800 0B to access the administration page. Y ou can check th e IP address of GNS-8000B on the LCD panel (see Chapter 3).
- 30 - 5. When the administration page is shown, click Admi nistration . 6. Enter the user name and pas sword to login. Default user name: administr ator Password : admin The first time you login GNS-8000B, Quick Con figuration page will be shown. Please refer to 6.

- 32 - 6.3 Quick Configuration Please follow the step-by-step guide in Quick Configuration to complete the settings of GNS-8000B. If you have any questions during we b administration, please click the help button on the top right hand corner of the page.
- 33 - Step 2. Change the administr ator password or select to use the original password. Step 3. Enter the date, time and select the time z one for the server . Step 4. Select the language the server us es to display files and directories. The default setting is English .
- 34 - Step 5. Enter the IP address, subnet ma sk and default gatew ay for the server . Select network interf ace configuration: fail over or load balance.
- 35 - Step 7. Configure disk volume on the server . Step 8. Configure the method of user au thenti cation. Please refer to Chap ter 6.5.2 for further information.

- 38 - 6.4 System Settings Basic system settings include the server name, date, time, and view system settings. 6.4.1 Server Name Enter the name of GNS-8000B . The server name can be 14 char acters long at maximum, which can contai n alphabets, numbers and hyphen (-).
- 39 - 6.4.2 Date & Time Set the date, time, and time zone accordin g to your l ocation. If the setti ngs are incorrect, the follow ing problems may occur: When using a web bro wser to access or sa ve a file, the display time of th e action will be incorrect .
- 40 - NTP Server Y ou can enable or use specified NTP (Network Time Protocol) server to update the date and time of t he system automatically . T o enable NTP server , please enable Configure NTP server or cli ent setting and enter the IP address or domain name of the NTP server , e.
- 41 - 6.4.3 Language Setting Select the language GNS-8000B uses to display files and directories. Note: All files and directories on GNS-8000B will be created using Unicode encoding.
- 42 - 6.5 Network Settings 6.5.1 TCP/ IP Configuration.
- 43 - Configuration of Network Inter faces Fail Over (Default) The system supports the conf iguration of multiple network interf aces, which enables you to perform F ail Over or L oad Balance functions. F ail over ensures server av ailab ility to the network.
- 44 - Load Balance In load balance * mode, the transmission lo ad is distributed among aggregated network ports. * An intelligent software adaptiv e agent will repeatedly analyze the traffic f low from the server and distribute the packets based on the desti nation address.
- 45 - Standalone Standalone settings enable each port to have a unique IP , which allows users on different network areas to shar e one GNS-8000B and maintain their independence from one an other in the network. When using this mode, fail over cannot be used and only LAN 1 can be configured as DHCP serv er .
- 46 - Network Speed Network speed settings pro vide an adv anced option for configuring ne twork speed. Y ou can select auto-negotiation (default), 10 Mbps, 100 Mbps, or 1000 Mbps. It is recommended to use t he default setting th at the server will determin e network speed automatically .
- 47 - Primary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of primary DNS server that provides DNS service for GNS-8000B in exte rnal network. Secondary DNS Server: Enter the IP address of seco ndary DNS server that provides DNS service for GNS- 8000B in external network.
- 48 - 6.5.2 Microsoft Networking Enable file service for Microsoft networki ng: If you ar e using Microsoft Windows, enable this service to access the files on network share folders. Assign a workgroup name. Standalone Serve r Use local users for user authentication.
- 49 - Microsoft Network Services. W orkgroup: Specify the workgroup GNS-8000B belongs to. The workgroup is a computer group unit in Microsoft Windows network for network sharing. AD Server Name: Enter the name of the AD server when AD domain is selected for authentication.
- 50 - 6.5.3 Apple Network T o use GNS-8000B on Apple MAC oper ating system, enable Apple T alk network support. If your Apple T alk network uses exte nded networks, and is assigned w ith multiple zones, assign a zone name to GNS-8000B . If you do not w ant to assign a network zone, enter a n asterisk (*) to use the defaul t setting.
- 51 - 6.5.5 Web File Manager T o access files on GNS-8000B via web browser , enable We b File Manager . If GNS- 8000B is connected to the Internet and us es a valid IP address, you can access files on the server by web browser from anywhere. F or further details, please refer to Appendix A.

- 54 - 6.6 Disk Configuration In the section, you can create, delet e, examine and format disk volume, as w ell as view disk and volu me status of GNS-8000B.
- 55 - b. RAID 5 Disk Volume Three or more hard disks can be integr ated to form RAID 5 disk volume. Data will be distributed and stored among th e disks. If a disk fails, you can replace a new disk with the damaged on e, and the system will resto re the data to the new disk.
- 56 - e. Linear Disk Volume You can combine two or more disks into one larger disk. Files will be saved on physical disks sequent ially but does not have a disk failure f ile protection function. The overall c apacity of linear disk is the su m of all disks.
- 57 - 6.6.3 Examine Disk Volume To examine a disk volume, select the disk volume to examine an d click OK. You can check the Fix erro rs box and the server will fix errors automatically duri ng disk checking.
- 58 - 6.6.4 Format Disk Volum e To format disk volume, select the di sk volume to format and click OK. 6.6.5 View Disk & Volume Status You can view details of physical disk s and logical volumes in the section.
- 59 - 6.7 User Management The files on GNS-8000B can be shared among multiple users. F or easier management and better control of users’ ac cess right, yo u have to organize users, user groups and their access right control.
- 60 - 512 users can be cre ated at maximum (i ncluding system defaul t users). You can create a new user according to your n eeds. The follo wing informat ion is required to create a new user: User name The user name must not exceed 32 char acters.
- 61 - 6.7.2 User Groups User group is a collection of users with th e sa me access right to files or folders. GNS-8000B has created the following user gro u ps by default: Administrators All members in this grou p have administration right. You cannot delete this group.
- 62 - Create Users and Ass ign Users to User Group The following example demonstrates how to create new users and assign users to a user group. ABC Co. has recently r ecrui ted two employees Mr. Jones Lee for Adm inistration Department and Ms. Jane Wu for Sale s Department.
- 63 - iii. Select t he user groups the users belong to on the ri ght list, i.e. Mr. Jones Lee for Administration Dept and Ms. Ja ne Wu for Sales Dept, and click Add . Then click Close . iv. After creatin g the users, the users will appear on th e list on Create User Page.
- 64 - Create Private Network Share for Us er Groups You can create particular network share for each user gro up. The procedure is described as below: 1. To create a network share called media acce ssible by Administration Department only, please go to “Use r Management—User Groups” page.
- 65 - 3. You can see the folder media in Network Share M anagement page. 4. Enter Access Control. You ca n see that only Administrati on Dept has full access right to the folder.
- 66 - 6.7.3 Quota T o allocate disk volume ef ficiently , you can specify the quo ta that can be used by each user . When this function i s enabled and a user has re ached his/her disk quota, he/she cannot upl oad data to the server an ymore. By default, no limitations are set for users.
- 67 - 2. Select Jones Lee on User page and click Quota Settin gs on the right. 3. Enter the quota size 2000MB and click OK . 4. Follow the same steps and enter the quota size 4000MB for Jane Wu and click OK . The quota setting is successfully applied.
- 68 - 6.8 Network Share Man agement The primary purpose of network storage is file sharing. In a standard operation environment, you can c reate different ne twork share folders for various types of files, or provide different file access rights to users or user groups.
- 69 - 6.8.1 Create T o create a network share, ent er the following informat ion: Network share name The share name must not exceed 12 characters and canno t contain the following characters: " . + = / : | * ? < > ; [ ] % Disk volume This area shows the disk volume statu s.
- 70 - 6.8.2 Property To edit the property of an existing network share, select a share and click Property . You can the n edit th e content of that share.

- 72 - 6.9 System Tools System T ools enable you to optimiz e the maintenance and management of GNS- 8000B. 6.9.1 SNMP Settings Enable SNMP (Simple Netw ork Management Protocol) service and complete al l necessary settings to manage network components of the server by SNMP.
- 73 - 6.9.2 Alert Notification Enter the e-mail address of admi nistrator an d SMTP server IP address. In case of warning or malfunction, e. g. CPU fan fails, a disk drive fails or is un plugged, an email will be sent to the ad ministra tor automatically .
- 74 - 6.9.4 Hardware Settings Y ou can enable or disable the hardw are functions of GNS-8000B. i. Enable LCD panel setting function To enable users to configure TC P/IP setting s via the LCD p anel.
- 75 - 6.9.5 UPS If your UPS device provides USB i nterface, you can enable UPS (uninterruptible power supply) support to protect your sy stem from abnormal system shutdown caused by pow er outage. In case of ut ility power failure, th e system will shut down automatically by probing the power stat us of the connected UPS unit.
- 76 - UPS Model Select the UPS model from th e list. If the UPS model you are using is not available on the list, please contact our technical support. IP Address of UP S If you have selected APC UPS with SNMP for UPS model, enter the IP address of the UPS.
- 77 - 6.9.6 System Update Note: If the system is runni ng properly , you do not need to update the firmware. Before updating system firmware, plea se make sure the product mod el and firmware version are correct.

- 79 - 6.9.7 Change Logo You can choose a personal picture to di splay on the login page of GNS-8000B. The size of the picture cannot exceed 20K byte s.
- 80 - 6.9.8 Tape Backup T ape backup enables you to perform backup or restor ation jobs by a tape drive. GNS-8000B supports full backup and incremental backup . By full backup, all source files will be backed up. By incremental backup, only modified or new files after last backup will be backed up.
- 81 - Scheduled Jobs Y ou can schedule a backup job to be executed automatically . Click New and define the job name, backup sour ce, backup t ype, and schedule.
- 82 - T ools There are several useful tape function s to oper ate on the tape drive. For example, you can rewind, eject or er ase the tape here. Click Apply to execute the action. Job Status Y ou can view the status of backup or restore job. Note: 1.
- 83 - 6.9.9 Remote Replication Remote R eplicat ion enables you to replicate local files to remote f olders on another server . The files will be compressed before the repl ication process in order to save ti me for data transfer . Make sure a ne twork sh are is crea ted before creating a remote repli cation job.

Note: T o use remote replication, enable Microsoft Networking service, make sure the destination networ k share and directory have been created, and the user name and password are valid to login the destination folder .

- 86 - 6.9.10 Backup/ Restore/ Reset Settings To backup the setting(s), select the appropriate option(s) and click Backup . To restore a backup settings file, click Browse to select the file and click Restor e . To reset the setting(s) to factory defaul t(s), select the appropriate option and click Reset .
- 87 - 6.9.11 USB CD/ DVD Backup/ Restore USB Backup/R estore function enables you to back up local data to CD/DV D discs via USB CD/DVD burner , and CD/DVD data to l ocal disk.
- 88 - i. USB CD/ DVD De tection a. Connect USB burner to GNS-8000B . T urn on the burner and input a writable disc. b. Click Re-detect . The system will display information of the detect ed burner . c. Click Eject Disc to eject the disc from the burner .
- 89 - ii. Write data a. T o write data from GNS-8000B to disc, enter the volume label name. b. In Source Path (Network Share/Di rectory), select a network share from the drop-down menu and enter a di rectory name. Y ou can also use s troke to indicate multiple dir ectories, e.
- 90 - iii. Load data a. Insert the disc for loading data to GNS-8000B network share. The volume label is shown in CD Label. b. In Destination Pa th (Network Share /Directory), select a network share from the drop-down menu a nd enter a directory name.
- 91 - 6.10 Statistics & Logs Y ou can view the event logs of all currently online users on GNS-8000 B for system monitoring. 6.10.1 Active Users This page shows all users t hat are curre ntly logged on to W eb File Manager . 6.10.2 Event Logs GNS-8000B can store thousands of recent event logs, including warning, error and information messages.
- 92 - Chapter 7 Access GNS-8000B 7.1 By Microsoft Windows 1. Y ou can access GNS-80 00B in Wi ndows OS by the following w ays: a. By Quick Install Wizard . For fu rther information, please refer to Chapter 4. b. Y ou may also search for GNS-8000B within the Network Neighborhood.
- 93 - 2. Once the connection to GNS-8000B is su ccessful, all listing on your av ailable network share will be displayed. Use the option Map Network Drive to map the folder(s) as your netw ork drive.
- 94 - 7.2 By Apple MAC OS If you are an Apple MAC user , you can access GNS-8000B by the following ways: 1. Using Network Brow ser a. Choose “Network Browser” in Apple menu. b. In “Network Browser” , choose Appl e T alk. A list of computers on the Apple T alk netw ork will appear .
- 95 - c. Enter the lo gin name and password, or use “Guest” to enter . Click Connect . d. When GNS-8000B is connected, all network shares will be shown.
- 96 - e. C hoose a network share to connect. The network share will appear on the desktop..
- 97 - 2. Using Chooser a. Select Chooser on Apple menu b ar . b. Click on AppleShare . The name of GNS-8000B will appea r on the right side of the window .

- 101 - 7.5 By File Transf er Protocol (FTP) In addition to working with multiple operating systems, GNS-8000B al so supports connection via FTP . Enter the correct us er name and pas sword to connect the server or access the public share folders as guest.

- 104 - Chapter 8 GNS-8000B Maintenance GNS-8000B is specially designed to run 24x7 and be ready at all times against system crash ca used by power outage. Th is section provides a general overview on system maintenance. 8.1 Restart/ Shut down Server Follow the steps below to restart or shut down GNS-8000B .
- 105 - 8.2 Reset Administrator Password and Network Settings T o reset the administrator password and network settings o f GNS-8000B, 1. Press the reset button of GNS-8000B for a few seconds.
- 106 - 8.3 Disk Failure or Ma lfunction When you encounter disk malfunction or failure, please do the following: 1. Re cord the malfunction status or e rror messages. 2. Stop using the failed GNS- 8000B and turn off the server . 3. Contact customer service fo r technical suppo rt.
- 107 - Appendix A Web File Manager Using Web File Manager T o use W eb File Manager , enable W eb File Manager in Network Settings first. Launch the web browser and go to GNS-8000B home page. Select Web File Manager and enter the correct login name a nd password.
- 108 - Select an existing network share for management. Y ou can organize network share folders of GNS -8000B. With W eb File Manager , you can upload, rename, or delete files an d folders in the network shares. View files online Click on a file displayed on the web page.

- 112 - Appendix B Configuring AD Authentication AD environment mixed mode can be su pported b y GNS-8000B. F or example, qatest.com.tw and sub2.qatest.com.tw ar e domains controlled by Windows 2003 server , and sub1.qatest.com.tw domain is controlled by Windows 2000 server .
- 113 - Please make sure you have enabled the Active Directory Service on the Windows Server and check the following items: 1. DNS Server setting on GNS-8000B ha s to be di rected to AD server . 2. GNS-8000B and AD server can synchron ize only if their time difference is less than 5 minutes.
- 114 - Adding GNS-8000B to Wind ows Server 2003 Acti ve Directory Dom ain 1. Go to TCP/IP Configur ation in Netw ork Settings. Enter the IP address of primary DNS server .
