Read this rst Be sure to follow the important tips given her e t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure t o do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer t o fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your comput er and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sur e that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some product damage is serious enough that the product should not be used again until it has been inspect ed and, if necessary, repaired by an authorized servicer .

9 Fn key Use the Fn k ey to take advantage of ThinkP ad ® function keys, such as turning on the ThinkLight light, locking the comput er , managing the wireless connections, and so on. 11 V olume control butt ons The volume contr ol buttons enable you to quickly adjust the sound volume, mute the speakers, or mut e the microphones of your computer .

4 Mini DisplayPort connect or Use the Mini DisplayP ort connector to connect your computer t o a compatible projector , external monitor , or high-denition television. 5 USB 3.0 connectors The USB 3.0 connect ors are used for connecting devices compatible with a USB interface, such as a USB printer or a digital camer a.
Connect your comput er to the supported docking station t o e xtend the computer capabilities when you are in your ofce or at home. 4 Hard disk drive or solid state drive Depending on models, your comput er might have a large-capacity, cust omer-upgr adable har d disk drive that can meet a variety of stor age demands.

Accessing Lenovo pr ograms on the Windows 8 operating system If your comput er is preinstalled with the Windows 8 oper ating system, you can access L enovo progr ams by doing either of the following: • Click the Lenovo QuickLaunch icon from the taskbar .
• Communications Utility Use the Communications Utility pr ogram to congur e settings for the integr ated camer a and audio devices. • Fingerprint Software If your system comes with a ngerprint r eader , the Fingerprint Softwar e pr ogram enables you to enroll your ngerprint and associat e it with your Windows password.
The P ower Manager progr am pr ovides convenient, e xible, and complet e power management for your computer . It enables you to adjust your computer power settings t o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving.

Chapter 2. Using your comput er This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. Register your computer When you r egister your computer , information is enter ed int o a database, which enables L enovo to contact you in case of a r ecall or other sever e pr oblem.
• Before you dispose of the data on the har d disk drive or the solid state drive, be sur e to r ead “Notice on deleting data fr om your hard disk or solid stat e drive” on page 61. P ower conservation Fn+F4 Put your computer into sleep mode. T o r eturn t o normal operation, press the Fn key only . If you want t o use the combination to put the computer into hibernation mode, you need t o change your power plan settings.
– F or Windows 7: Open the Communications settings window, in which you can preview your video image, take a snapshot of your current image, and change the camera and audio settings. – F or Windows 8: Start the L enovo Settings pr ogram. T o use the camera or change the camera settings, click C amera .
V olume and mut e buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Speaker mute button 2 V olume control button 3 Micr ophone mut e butt on If you mut e the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.
Windows key On the Windows 7 operating syst em, pr ess the Windows key t o open the S tart menu. On the Windows 8 operating system, pr ess the Windows key to switch between the curr ent workspace and the Start scr een. Y ou also can use the Windows key together with another key t o achieve other functions.
The T r ackP oint cent er button 3 , called the scroll bar , enables you to scr oll Web pages or documents in any direction with no need to use the gr aphic scr oll bars on the side of the window . If you are not familiar with the T r ackP oint, these instructions will help you get start ed: 1.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboard and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The touch pad consists of a pad 1 and two click buttons below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
Disabling the T rackP oint pointing device or the touch pad T o disable the T r ackP oint pointing device or the touch pad, do the following: 1. Go to Contr ol P anel and click Hardware and Sound ➙ Mouse ➙ UltraNav . 2. T o disable the T rackP oint pointing device, clear the check bo x for Enable T rackP oint .
The ac power adapter that comes with your computer has two basic components: • The transformer pack that converts ac power for use with the computer . • The power cord that plugs into the ac outlet and into the transformer pack. Attention: Using an impr oper power cord could cause severe damage to your computer .
Managing your batter y power T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, adjust your power plan settings. T o access power plan settings, do the following: • F or Windows 7: Start the P ower Manager pr ogram and then click the Power Plan tab.
Enabling the wakeup function If you put your computer into hibernation mode, and the wakeup function is disabled (this is the default setting), the comput er does not consume any power . If the wak eup function is enabled, it consumes a small amount of power .
DANGER Do not attempt to disassemble or modify the battery pack. Attempting to do so can cause an e xplosion, or liquid leakage from the battery pack. A battery pack other than the one specied by Lenovo, or a disassembled or modied batt er y pack is not covered by the warranty .
DANGER There is a danger of an e xplosion if the backup battery is incorr ectly placed. The lithium battery contains lithium and can e xplode if it is not pr operly handled, or disposed of.
• If you use the wireless feature (the 802.11 standar d) of your comput er simultaneously with a Bluetooth option, the data tr ansmission speed can be delayed and the performance of the wir eless feature can be degraded.
• F or Windows 7: Use the Access Connections pr ogram. F or instructions on how to start the Access Connections progr am, see “ Accessing L enovo pr ograms on the Windows 7 oper ating system” on page 15. • F or Windows 8: Open the L enovo Settings progr am and click L ocation A wareness .
Checking the wireless network connection status Y ou can check your computer wireless network connection status and wireless signal str ength through the wireless network connection status icon in the Windows notication area. The mor e bars encompassed, the better the signal.
Y ou can nd mor e detailed information about the status and signal strength of your wireless connection either by opening the Access Connections progr am or by double-clicking the Access Connections wir eless status icon in the Windows notication area.
Attaching an e xternal monitor Y our computer can support a maximum video r esolution of up to 2048x1536 (with an e xternal monit or attached to the VGA connect or) or up to 2560x1600 (with an e xternal monitor attached to the Mini DisplayP ort connect or), pr ovided that the external monit or also supports that r esolution.
6. Click the Monitor tab. Check the monitor information window to make sure that the monitor type is correct. If it is, click OK to close the window; otherwise pr oceed with the following st eps. 7. If mor e than two monitor types ar e displayed, select Generic PnP Monitor or Generic Non-PnP Monitor .
If the computer output does not appear on the DVI monitor , do the following: • F or a computer that supports NVIDIA Optimus Gr aphics: 1. Right-click on the desktop and select NVIDIA Control P anel . The NVIDIA Control P anel window opens. 2. In the Select a T ask navigation pane at left under Display , click Set up multiple displays .
Pr esentation Director has some predened presentation schemes. T o apply a pr esentation scheme, pr ess Fn+F7. T o start the Pr esentation Director pr ogram, see “ Accessing Lenovo pr ograms on the Windows 7 oper ating system” on page 15.
6. Click Advanced settings and set up the color quality on the Monitor tab. 7. Click OK t o apply the changes. Using the NVIDIA Optimus Graphics featur e Some ThinkPad not ebook computers support NVIDIA Optimus Graphics.
• F or Windows 8: P ress Fn+F6 to start the Lenovo Settings pr ogram. Then click Camer a . When the camera is started, the green camer a-in-use indicator turns on.
Using an ExpressCar d module, a ash media card, or a smart card Depending on the model, your computer might have an ExpressCar d slot for a 34 mm-wide card, a media card reader slot, or a smart card r eader slot.
1. Click the triangular icon in the Windows notication area t o show hidden icons. 2. Select the item you want to remove to stop the car d. 3. P ress the card t o eject it from your computer . 4. Remove the card and st ore it safely for future use.
Chapter 3. Y ou and your computer This chapter pr ovides you information about accessibility and tr aveling with your computer . This chapter contains the following topics: • “ Accessibility and c.
Display : P osition the display to maintain a comfortable viewing distance of 510-760 mm (20-30 inch). A void glare or reections on the display from overhead lighting or outside sources of light. Chapter 4. Security This chapter provides information about how t o protect your computer fr om theft and unauthorized use. Attaching a mechanical lock Y ou can attach a mechanical lock to your computer , to help pr event it fr om being removed without your permission.
P ower-on password Y ou can set a power -on password to help pr otect your computer against access by unauthorized users. If you set a power-on password, the passwor d prompt is displayed on the scr een whenever you turn on the computer . Y ou must ent er the corr ect passwor d to start using the computer .
3. T urn your computer off and then on again. 4. When the logo screen is displayed, press F1. the ThinkPad Setup progr am main menu opens. 5. Select Security , using the cursor directional keys to move down the menu. 6. Select P assword . 7. Select Hard Disk 1 P assword .
• T o r emove the hard disk password, type the curr ent password in the Ent er Current Passwor d eld. Then leave the Enter New P assword and Conrm New P assword elds blank, and pr ess Enter . A Setup Notice window is displayed. P ress F10 to exit from the Setup Notice window.

10. P ress F10 to e xit fr om the Setup Notice window . The ne xt time you open the ThinkP ad Setup pr ogram, you will be pr ompted to type your password t o proceed.
Disk Encryption hard disk drive and Encryption solid state drive Some models contain the Disk Encryption hard disk drive or Encryption solid state drive. This feature helps to pr otect your comput er against security attacks on media, NAND ash or device contr ollers by use of a har dware encryption chip.
Using the ngerprint reader Depending on the options you order ed, your comput er might have an integr ated ngerprint reader . By enrolling your ngerprint and associating it with a power -on p.
1. Place the ball of your nger—that is, the centr al part of the ngerprint—on the small cir cle above the reader . Make sur e that the entir e top joint of the nger is on the r eader . 2. Apply light pr essure and swipe your nger acr oss the r eader in one smooth motion.
Attention: If you always use your ngerprint to log on to the system, you might forget your passwor d. Writ e down your password, and keep it in a safe place. If you forget it and for some reason you cannot swipe your nger across the reader - for e xample, if you injure that nger - you cannot start the computer or change the password.
• The r eader oft en fails to enroll or authenticat e your ngerprint. If your nger has any of the following conditions, you might not be able to register or authenticate it: • Y our nger is wrinkled. • Y our nger is rough, dry, or injur ed.
If an Encryption solid stat e drive or a Disk Encryption hard disk drive is supported and installed in your computer , you can logically dispose of all the data on the drive in a very short time by er asing the cryptogr aphic key .
Chapter 5. Recovery overview This chapt er pr ovides information about the recovery solutions. • “Recovery overview for Windows 7 models ” on page 63 • “Recovery overview for Windows 8 model.
T o cr eate r ecovery media, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen. Using recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how t o use recovery media on differ ent operating systems.
3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup operation options. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een to complet e the backup operation. P er forming a recovery operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am.
3. If you have set a Rescue and Recovery passwor d, type your passwor d when pr ompted. The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay . Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails t o open, see “Solving recovery pr oblems” on page 68.
• If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB hard disk drive, use the following instructions to use the rescue medium: 1. Attach the USB har d disk drive to one of the USB connect ors on your comput er . 2. Repeatedly press and release the F12 key when turning on the computer .
• In the subfolder for the device, look for the executable le (a le with the e xtension .e xe). Double-click the le, and follow the instructions on the screen. Attention: If you need updat ed device drivers, do not download them from the Windows Updat e Web site.
2. In the Remove everything and r einstall Windows section, click Get started . Advanced startup options Advanced startup options enable you to change the startup settings of your Windows oper ating syst em, start the comput er from an ext ernal device, or restor e the Windows oper ating system from a system image.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices This chapter pr ovides instructions on how to install or replace hardwar e for your computer . • “Static electricity prevention” on page 71 • “Replacing the batt.
Note: If an unauthorized battery is installed, the following message will be displayed: “The batt ery installed is not supported by this system and will not charge. Please replace the battery with the corr ect Lenovo battery for this system. ” DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an e xplosion.
4. Install a fully charged battery until it clicks into place. 5. Slide the battery latch to the locked position. 6. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Using the e xtended life battery F or longer battery life, an e xtended life batt ery is available as an option.

T urn off the computer , or enter hibernation mode. Then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables from the computer .
3. Unlock the battery latch. 4. P ress the latch as shown and detach the battery . 5. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the hard disk drive Before you start, print these instructions. Notes: The har d disk drive or solid state drive is very sensitive.
• Never remove the drive while the syst em is operating, in sleep mode, or in hibernation mode. T o replace the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive, do the following: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the computer .
8. Attach the side rubber rails to the new hard disk drive or the side spacer r ails t o the new solid state drive. 9. Insert the har d disk drive or solid stat e drive into the slot; then pr ess it rmly into place. 10. Reinstall the cover of the slot.
11. Reinstall the screw . 12. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 71. 13. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Replacing the k eyboard Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
6. T urn the computer over and open the display . 7. P ush hard in the dir ection shown by the arrows 1 to unlatch the fr ont side of the keyboard. The keyboard will open up slightly 2 . 8. Car efully lift the keyboard until you can see how it is connected.
Installing the keyboard T o install the keyboard, do the following: 1. Attach the connector . 2. Insert the keyboar d. Make sur e that the r ear edges of the keyboar d ar e under the fr ame, as shown by the arrows.
3. Slide the keyboar d in the dir ection shown by the arrows. 4. Close the computer display, and turn the computer over . Reinstall the screws. Chapter 6 .
5. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 . 6. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 71. 7. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables.
Replacing memory in the slot on the underside of the computer Y our comput er has two memory slots: one under the k eyboard and another on the underside of the computer . T o replace the memory module, follow the procedur e below: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables fr om the computer .
7. Pivot the memory module downward until it snaps into place. 8. Make sur e that the memory module is rmly x ed in the slot and cannot be moved easily . 9. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 .
6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the memory module you ar e installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the memory module, do not t ouch its contact edge.
2. When the logo screen is displayed, pr ess the F1 key . The ThinkP ad Setup progr am main menu opens. The Installed memory item shows the total amount of memory installed in your computer . Replacing the wireless LAN/WiMAX card Before you start, print these instructions.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The card pops up 2 . 7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Express Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket contact of the computer .
Note: If the new PCI Express Mini Card has two connectors, as in the next dr awing, put the white cable in the cable pr otection tube. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of the connect ors 1 . Secur e the card with the screw 2 .
10. Connect the cables to the new PCI Expr ess Mini Card. Be sure to attach the gray cable t o the connector marked “MAIN” or “M” on the car d, and the black cable to the connect or marked “ AUX” or “ A ”.
6. Remove the screw 1 . The car d pops up 2 . Then remove the card. 7. Remove the card. 8. Align the contact edge of the new card with the corresponding socket contact of the computer 1 .
Note: If the new PCI Express Mini Card has two connectors, as in the next dr awing, put the white cable in the cable pr otection tube. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of the connect ors 1 . Secur e the card with the screw 2 .
13. T urn the computer over again. Reconnect the ac power adapter and all cables. Installing and r eplacing the wireless W AN car d Before you start, print these instructions. DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous.
5. If a t ool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it t o disconnect the cables from the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.

8. Align the contact edge of the new wir eless WAN car d with the corresponding socket. 9. Pivot the car d until you can snap it into place by pr essing the upper side of each connector 1 . Secure the card with the screw 2 . Note: Depending on the syst em conguration of your computer , the card might have only one connect or .
10. Connect the cables to the new wir eless W AN card. 11. P ut the memory slot cover back in place 1 , close the cover 2 , and then tight en the screws 3 . 12. Reinstall the batt ery . See “Replacing the batt er y” on page 71. 13. T urn the computer over again.
4. Locat e the SIM car d slot inside the battery compartment. Gently pull the tab ext ending fr om the slot until it stops 1 . The car d comes partway out of the slot. Remove the car d 2 . 5. Hold the new car d with the metal contact facing upward and going into the slot rst.

Note: Do not remove the battery and the ac power adapt er t o r eset the computer . 2. While the computer is turned off, remove all power sour ces fr om the computer (battery and the ac power adapter). Hold down the power button for 10 seconds. Plug in the ac power adapter while keeping the battery out of the computer .
Solution : Checksum of the Security settings in the EFI V ariable is not corr ect. Enter ThinkP ad Setup to check security settings, Pr ess F10 and then press Enter to r estart the syst em. If you still have a problem, have the computer serviced. • Message : 0187: EAIA data access err or Solution : The access to EEPROM is failed.
Solution : Cooling fan has failed. Shut down the comput er immediately and have the comput er serviced. • Message : Thermal sensing error Solution : The thermal sensor has problem.
– If your system is installed with the Windows 8 oper ating system, use either the Remove everything and r einstall Windows function or the recovery discs to r estore the system t o the factory stat e. If the problem persists, have the comput er serviced.
Solution : Make sur e that: • The cable is installed corr ectly . The network cable must be securely connect ed both to the Ethernet connector of your computer and to the RJ45 connector of the hub. The maximum allowable distance from the computer to hub is 100 meters.
Solution : • If your system is installed with Windows 7 oper ating syst em, ensure that: – Y our wir eless LAN driver is the lat est version. Check the Web site and conrm that the driver version supported by the Access Connections progr am is the lat est documented in the readme le.
• When the computer is turned on • When the computer r esumes normal oper ation • When the T r ackP oint pointing device is kept pressed for a long time • When the temper ature changes Problem : The T rackP oint pointing device or t ouch pad does not work.

Problem : Y ou hear a noise fr om the drive when the CD , DVD , or CD-RW disc is spinning. Solution : If the disc is not corr ectly loaded on the center pivot of the drive, it might rub against the drive cover and make a noise. Make sur e that the disc is loaded corr ectly in the drive.
