It is int ended only for tr ained servicers who are familiar with Lenovo computer pr oducts. Before servicing a L enovo pr oduct, be sur e t o read the Safety Information.

Chapter 2. Safety information This chapter contains the safety information that you need to be familiar with before servicing a computer . General safety F ollow these rules to ensur e general safety: • Observe good housekeeping in the area of the machines during and after maintenance.
Observe the following rules when working on electrical equipment. Important: Use only appr oved t ools and test equipment. Some hand tools have handles covered with a soft material that does not insulat e you when working with live electrical currents.

Each machine, as it was designed and built, had r equired safety it ems installed to protect users and service personnel from injury .

Chapter 5. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using. However , the oper ating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility pr ogram.
Administrator P assword Setting an Administr ator Passwor d det ers unauthoriz ed persons fr om changing conguration settings. Y ou might want to set an Administrat or P assword if you are responsible for maintaining the settings of sever al computers.
T o set a Power -On P assword, do the following: 1. Start the L enovo BIOS Setup Utility pr ogram (See ”Starting the L enovo BIOS Setup Utility pr ogram” on page 13.) 2. F rom the Security menu, select Set Power -On P assword and pr ess the Enter key .

POS T error codes Each time you turn the computer on, it performs a series of tests to check that the syst em is oper ating correctly and that certain options ar e set.

Identifying parts on the motherboar d The motherboard (sometimes called the planar or syst em boar d) is the main circuit board in your comput er . It pr ovides basic computing functions and supports a variety of devices that are factory-installed or that you can install later .

Replacing the k eyboard and mouse T o replace the keyboard and mouse Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, DVDs or memory cards) from the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices. Step 2. Unplug all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
Step 4. Remove the 2 screws that secur e the computer cover at the r ear of the chassis. Step 5. T o r einstall the comput er cover: a. Line up the comput er cover with the chassis then slide it back. b. Secur e the comput er cover t o the chassis with the scr ews.
Note: It may be helpful t o place the comput er face-down on a soft at surface for this procedur e. L enovo recommends that you use a blanket, towel, or other soft cloth to pr otect the computer screen fr om scratches or other damage. T o r emove the front bezel: Step 1.
Step 6. Remove the 2 screws that secure the optical disk drive bay to the chassis. 1 Step 7. Slide out the optical disk drive bay, then lift it up. 2 1 2 Step 8.
c. Slide the optical disk drive bay back, then push it in and r eattach it t o the chassis with the screws. Step 11. Reattach the fr ont be zel, computer cover . Replacing the hard disk drive Note: F or this procedure, it helps t o lay the comput er at.
Step 10. Slide the har d disk drive out of the bay . Step 11. Install the new hard disk drive : a. Insert the new hard disk drive into the drive bay . b. Scr ew back the 4 screws on the drive bay . c. Attach the data and power cables to the new hard disk drive.
Step 6. Remove the memory module being replaced by opening the r etaining clips as shown. Step 7. P osition the new memory module over the memory connect or . Make sure the notch 1 on the memory module is correctly aligned with the connector key 2 on the syst em board.
Step 8. Slide then lift the P ower supply out of chassis. Step 9. Install the new power supply : a. Line up the holes on the new power supply with mounting holes on the rear of the chassis and secure it t o the chassis with the 3 scr ews. b. Connect the power cables to the connectors on the motherboard.
Step 5. Remove the screw that secures the graphic card to the chassis, and slide out the metal bracket. Step 6. Push the pin that lock the gr aphic car d, and pull it up then slide it out t o r emove it. Step 7. T o install the new graphic car d: a. Slide then insert the new graphic card to the same connector on the motherboar d.
Replacing the system fan T o r eplace the system fan: Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, DVDs, or memory cards) fr om the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices. Step 2. Unplug all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
Step 6. Remove the 4 scr ews that secure the micr oprocessor fan t o the heat-sink and lift up the micropr ocessor fan t o r emove it. Step 7. T o install the new micr oprocessor fan: a. Line up the new micr oprocessor fan with the heat-sink and secure it t o the heat-sink with 4 scr ews.
Step 3. Disconnect all cables attached to the computer . This includes power cor ds, input/output (I/O) cables, and any other cables that are connect ed t o the computer . Refer t o “L eft and right view” and “Rear view” for help with locating the various connectors.
Step 6. Remove the heat-sink. Refer t o “Replacing the heat-sink”. Step 7. T o remove the micropr ocessor 3 fr om the system boar d, press then slide the small handle out to spring it up. 1 and open the r etainer . 2 Attention: Do not touch the gold contacts on the bottom of the micr oprocessor .
Step 8. Holding the sides of the micr oprocessor with your ngers, r emove the pr otective cover 1 that prot ects the gold contacts on the new microprocessor .
T o r eplace the Wi-Fi car d: Step 1. Remove any media (disks, CDs, DVDs, or memory cards) fr om the drives, shut down the oper ating system, and turn off the computer and all attached devices. Step 2. Unplug all power cor ds from electrical outlets. Step 3.
