Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given her e to continue to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailure to do so might lead t o discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. When your computer is turned on or the batt ery is charging, the base, the palm rest, and some other parts may become hot.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep (standby) mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that require immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .

P ower cords and power adapters DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV-F, 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a r eceptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your computer equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Batteries DANGER P ersonal computers manufactured by Lenovo contain a coin cell battery t o provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile products, such as notebook comput ers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack to provide system power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly r eplaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The battery contains lithium and can explode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries are char ging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
DANGER Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser r adiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid dir ect e xposure to the beam.

The T r ackP oint and touch pad butt ons provide functions similar to those of a mouse and its butt ons. 16 V olume contr ol buttons The built-in volume buttons enable you t o quickly adjust the volume or mute the sound fr om your computer . Note: Y our computer is compatible with USB 1.1 and 2.0. 2 ExpressCar d slot Y our computer has the Expr essCard slot for a 34 mm-wide car d. F or details, refer to the instructions in “Using an Expr essCard or a Flash Media Car d” on page 53. 3 Optical drive Y our computer has a slot for an optical drive.

Note: T o avoid impeding airow, do not place any obstacle in front of the fan. 2 Monitor connector Y ou can attach an e xternal monit or or a pr ojector to your computer to display computer information.

3 PCI Express Mini Card slot for wireless WAN Y our computer might include a PCI Expr ess Mini C ard for wireless WAN in the PCI Expr ess Mini C ard slot which enables wir eless W AN communications. 4 Memory-upgrade slot Y ou can incr ease the amount of memory in your computer by installing a memory module in the memory bay .
DANGER T o avoid the risk of electrical shock, do not connect the telephone cable to the Ethernet connector . Y ou can only connect an Ethernet cable to this connector . T wo indicators, t o the lower right and left of the connector , show the status of the network connection.
System-status indicators Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. The illuminat ed dot in the ThinkP ad logo on the outer lid of your computer and on the palm rest works as a system-status indicator: it shows whether the computer is in sleep (standby), hibernation, or normal mode.
P ower-status indicators Y our computer has an indicat or that shows the status of ac power . Note: Y our computer keyboar d might look differ ent from the illustr ation above. The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapter is connect ed.
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er . If you contact Lenovo for help, the machine type and model number will enable support technicians to identify your computer and provide the highest level of service.
If no integr ated wir eless PCI Express Mini Car d has been pr einstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the procedur e in Installing and r eplacing a PCI Expr ess Mini Card for wireless LAN/WiMAX connection or Installing and replacing the PCI Expr ess Mini Car d for wir eless WAN.

The Message Center Plus can also provide messages about new updates available t o keep your computer current. P assword Manager The P assword Manager program enables users to manage and remember all their sensitive and easy-to-for get application and W eb site login information, such as user IDs, passwords, and other personal information.
ThinkV antage GPS If the PCI Express Mini Car d installed in your comput er supports GPS, your comput er can receive signals from GPS satellit es and determine its location. If your computer is connected to the Internet, you can nd your location on a r eal-time map pr ovided by Google Maps or Microsoft Bing ™ Maps.
Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer ” on page 25 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans (in Windows XP , power schemes) by use of P ower Manager. • If your comput er will be turned off for an ext ended period of time, you can prevent batt ery power from draining by removing the battery .
ThinkP ad Edge E420 special k eys Y our computer has several special keys 1 and 2 . T o take advantage of each function, dir ectly pr ess the desir ed key . Note: If you select “Default, ” pr essing F1–F12 initiates special functions illustr ated on each key .
Switch between the computer display and an ext ernal monitor . Windows will show these display options: • Computer display only (L CD) • Computer display and external monit or (same image) • Com.
V olume and mute keys T o quickly adjust the volume of the sound from your comput er , mute the sound entirely, set the micr ophone to mute, or control the video output from the integr ated camera, press one of the following keys.
Note: T o switch between the computer display and an e xternal monitor , the Win+P key combination is also available. Note: This function is not supported if differ ent desktop images ar e displayed on the computer display and the external monitor (the Extend desktop function).
Using the Ultr aNav pointing device Y our comput er may come with the UltraNav pointing device. The Ultr aNav consists of the T r ackPoint and the touch pad, each of which is itself a pointing device with both basic and ext ended functions.
Note: Y our computer keyboard may look slightly different fr om the illustr ation above. If you ar e not familiar with the T r ackP oint, these instructions will help you get started: 1.
Note: If you replace the keyboard, a new k eyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The t ouch pad consists of a pad 1 and two click buttons below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
F or Windows 7: 1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel . 2. Click Hardware and Sound , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the UltraNav tab and proceed to customizing the touch pad. F or Windows XP: 1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel .

3. Plug the power cor d into an electrical outlet. Tips on using the ac power adapter • When the ac power adapter is not in use, disconnect it fr om the electrical outlet. • Do not bind the power cor d tightly around the ac power adapt er tr ansformer pack when it is connected to the tr ansformer .
• F or Windows XP: Click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ ThinkV antage ➙ P ower Manager . F or mor e information about the P ower Manager progr am, refer to the on-line help of the pr ogram. P ower-saving modes There ar e several modes that you can use at any time t o conserve power .
4. F rom the left pane, select the task folder for which you want t o enable the wakeup function. The scheduled tasks are displayed. 5. Click a scheduled task, and then click the Conditions tab. 6. Under P ower , select the check bo x for W ake the comput er to run this task .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
Connecting to the network Y our computer has one or more network adapt ers for connecting to the Internet and t o your company's wired LAN or wir eless LAN network. Note: Some models come with a built-in wir eless W AN card enabling you to establish wireless connections over remote public or private networks.
Making wireless LAN connections Y our comput er comes with a built-in wireless networking car d and a congur ation utility t o help you make wireless connections and monitor the status of your conn.
Using Bluetooth F or Windows 7 If your computer is equipped with the Int egrated Bluetooth features, you can enable or disable the features by pressing F9. If you pr ess F9, a list of wireless features is displayed. Y ou can enable or disable the Bluetooth features with a single click.
If you ar e using Windows XP and want to use the Micr osoft standard Bluetooth features, install the softwar e by following the instructions in “Installing the Micr osoft Bluetooth softwar e in Windows XP” on page 44. F or information about how t o use the Bluetooth function, do as follows: 1.
The Bluetooth Setup Wizard has the following capabilities: • Finding all Bluetooth -enabled devices that can pr ovide services • Finding a specic Bluetooth -enabled device that you want t o use.

Y ou can nd mor e detailed information about the signal strength and status of your wireless connection by opening Access Connections or by right-clicking the Access Connections Gauge in the task bar and selecting View Status of Wireless Connection .
– P ower to the wir eless r adio is on. The signal str ength of the wir eless connection is poor . T o improve signal strength, move your system closer t o the wireless access point.
F or Windows XP: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Properties . The Display Pr operties window opens. 2. Click the Appearance tab. 3. Under F ont Size , click Large F onts or Extra Large F onts . 4. Click Apply to apply the settings. 5. Click OK .
• If the external TFT monit or you connect has an analog interface, ickers or ripples may appear on some displays, such as the shutdown screen of Windows. This is caused by the e xternal TFT monitor , and cannot be x ed by adjusting the e xternal TFT monit or or the comput er side settings.
11. Click Update Driver . The Har dware Update Wizar d appears. 12. Click No, not this time , and then click Next . 13. Select Install fr om a list or specic location (Advanced) , and then click Ne xt . 14. Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install , and then click Ne xt .
1. Connect the e xternal monit or to the monitor connector; then connect the monitor to an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the external monitor . 3. Pr ess F6, then select Extend . T o change the resolution for each monitor , do as follows: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Screen resolution .

Notice on deleting data from your hard disk drive As computers spread into every corner of life, they process more and more information. The data on your computer , some of which is sensitive, is stor ed on a har d disk drive (HDD). Befor e you dispose of, sell, or hand over your computer , make sure t o delete data stored on it.

Chapter 5. Recovery over view This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions pr ovided by Lenovo. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Creating and using recovery media.
Creating r ecover y media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 operating syst em, you can create r ecovery media using discs or ext ernal USB stor age devices.
3. Select the optical drive with the boot disc as the startup device and press Enter . After a short delay, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4. On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your syst em . 5. F ollow the instructions on the scr een.

F ollow the instructions on the screen to complete the recovery oper ation. • T o perform a r ecovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows XP oper ating system, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ ThinkV antage ➙ Rescue and Recovery .
• T o restor e your har d disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or t o r estore your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings, click Restore your system and follow the instructions on the screen. 3. On the S tartup Device Menu , select the desired optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the r escue disc into the optical drive and pr ess Enter . The rescue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB har d disk drive, use the following instructions t o use the rescue medium: 1.
-OR- • If the subfolder for the device contains a le of setup information (a le with the extension .inf), you can use the Add New Har dware progr am (in the Windows Contr ol P anel) to r einstall the device driver . Not all device drivers can be reinstalled by use of this progr am.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can increase the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by r eplacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. Or , if you need to, you can r eplace the PCI Express Mini Car d by following the pr ocedures in this section.
Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
4. Insert a fully charged batt er y until it clicks into place 1 as shown in the drawing, and then slide the battery latch t o the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables t o the computer . Replacing the hard disk drive Before you start, print these instructions.
3. Remove the battery . F or more information about how to r emove the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 77. 4. Loosen the screws 1 , and then remove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the screws 1 , and then slide the hard disk drive towar ds the fr ont of the system 2 .
6. Remove the hard disk drive by lifting its upper side. 7. Place the new har d disk drive fr om the lower side as shown in the picture. 8. Slide the hard disk drive rmly into the connector 1 , and then r einstall the scr ews 2 .
9. Attach the cover 1 , pivot it downwar ds, and then tighten the scr ews 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . F or mor e information about how to r einstall the battery, r efer to “Replacing the battery” on page 77 . 11. T urn the computer over again.
5. Loosen the screw . 6. Pull out the drive. T o install a r epaired drive or a new one, do as follows: Chapter 6 . Replacing devices 83.
1. Insert the drive in the bay, and then pr ess it rmly into the connect or . 2. Reinstall the screw . 3. Attach the cover 1 , pivot it downwar ds, and then tighten the scr ews 2 .
5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and the cables t o the computer; then turn it on. ThinkP ad Edge E520 Before you start, print these instructions. An optical drive is pr einstalled in the bay . If it needs t o be r epaired, r emove it as follows: 1.
1. Insert the drive in the bay, and then pr ess it rmly to the connector . 2. Reinstall the scr ew 1 , and tighten it 2 . 3. Put the batt er y in place. 4. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapter and the cables t o the computer; then turn it on.
DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables befor e opening the cover of this slot. Attention: Before you start installing a PCI Expr ess Mini Card, t ouch a metal table or a grounded metal object.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d with the corresponding sock et 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the card with the screw 2 . 8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Express Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing.
10. Reinstall the battery . F or mor e information about how to r einstall the battery, r efer to “Replacing the battery” on page 77. 11. T urn the comput er over again.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new card, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the card. If no such t ool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connect ors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini Car d with the corresponding sock et 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the card with the screw 2 . 8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Express Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing.

Connect the ac power adapter and cables to the comput er; then turn it on. Replacing memory Before you start, print these instructions.
5. If the two SO-DIMMs are alr eady in the memory slots, pr ess out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 1 , and then remove an SO-DIMM 2 t o make r oom for the new one. Be sure to save it for futur e use. 6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the SO-DIMM you ar e installing.

Computer st ops responding Print these instructions now and keep it with your comput er for reference later . If your computer is complet ely unr esponsive (you cannot use the Ultr aNav pointing device or the k eyboard), do the following steps: 1. Push and hold the power switch until the machine turns off.
Note: If you want to replace your keyboar d, contact the Customer Support Cent er . Refer to “Calling Lenovo” on page 158. Error messages • Message : 0175: Bad CRC1, st op POS T task. Solution : The EEPROM checksum is not correct (block #6). Have the computer serviced.
Solution : Make sure that there ar e no objects placed on the keyboar d, or if you have one, the e xternal keyboard. T urn off the computer , and turn off all attached devices.
T urn the computer off; then turn it on to start the ThinkPad Setup. V erify the conguration and then restart the computer either by choosing the Exit Saving Changes option under the Restart item or by pr essing F10. If you still see the same error code, have the comput er serviced.
– If the memory size has been changed, re-cr eate the hibernation le. • Message : Oper ating syst em not found. Solution : V erify the following: – The hard disk drive is correctly installed. – A startable disc is in the drive. If you still see the same err or message, check the boot sequence using ThinkP ad Setup.
– The ac power adapter is connected to the computer and the power cor d is plugged into a working electrical outlet. – The computer is turned on. (T urn the power switch on again for conrmation.) If a power -on password is set: – Pr ess any key to display the prompt for the power -on passwor d.

• Problem : The adapt er stops working for no apparent r eason. Solution : The network driver les may be corrupt or missing. Update the driver by referring to the “Solution” description for the procedur e to make sure that the correct device driver is installed in the preceding problem.

• Problem : The screen is unreadable or distorted. Solution : Make sure that the monitor information is corr ect. (Refer t o the “Solution” for setting a higher resolution on the e xternal monit or .) Make sure that the appr opriate monitor type is selected.
8. Click the Monitor-2 icon (for the external monitor). 9. Select the Resolution of the secondary display . 10. Set the r elative position of the each monitor by dragging its icon. Y ou can set the monitors in any relative position, but the icons must touch each other .
Solution : Make sur e the built-in audio device is congur ed correctly . F or Windows 7: 1. Click S tart ➙ Contr ol P anel . 2. Click Har dware and Sound . 3. Click Device Manager . If you are prompt ed for an administr ator passwor d or conrmation, type the password or provide conrmation.
Solution : The slider might be gr ayed out. This means that its position is xed by the hardwar e and cannot be changed. • Problem : The volume sliders do not stay in place when some audio applications are used. Solution : It is normal for the sliders to change position when certain sound applications ar e used.
