Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given here t o continue t o get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailur e to do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ut it in sleep (standby) mode. • P ut it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that r equire immediat e action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .

P ower cords and power adapt ers DANGER Use only the power cords and power adapters supplied by the product manufacturer . The power cords shall be safety approved. F or Germany, it shall be H05VV -F , 3G, 0.75 mm 2 , or better . F or other countries, the suitable types shall be used accordingly .
Plugs and outlets DANGER If a r eceptacle (power outlet) that you intend to use with your comput er equipment appears to be damaged or corroded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
Batteries DANGER P ersonal comput ers manufactur ed by L enovo contain a coin cell batter y to provide power to the system clock. In addition, many mobile pr oducts, such as notebook comput ers, utilize a rechargeable battery pack to provide system power when in portable mode.
Lithium coin cell battery notice DANGER Danger of explosion if battery is incorr ectly replaced. When replacing the lithium coin cell battery, use only the same or an equivalent type that is recommended by the manufacturer . The battery contains lithium and can e xplode if not properly used, handled, or disposed of.
Heat and product ventilation DANGER Computers, ac power adapters, and many accessories can generate heat when turned on and when batteries are char ging.
Electrical current safety information DANGER Electric current from power , t elephone, and communication cables is hazar dous. T o avoid a shock hazard: • Do not use your computer during a lightning storm.
DANGER Some laser products contain an embedded Class 3A or Class 3B laser diode. Note the following. Laser r adiation when open. Do not stare into the beam, do not view directly with optical instruments, and avoid dir ect exposure to the beam.

3 Built-in micr ophone The built-in microphone captur es sound and voice when it is used with an application pr ogram capable of handling audio. 5 Numeric k eypad Y our comput er has a numeric keypad that can be used to quickly input numbers. 6 P ower switch Use the power switch t o turn on the computer .
The T r ackP oint and t ouch pad buttons provide functions similar to those of a mouse and its butt ons. 16 V olume control buttons The built-in volume buttons enable you t o quickly adjust the volume or mute the sound fr om your computer . 2 Optical drive Y our computer has a slot for an optical drive. 3 P ower jack The ac power adapter cable connects to the comput er power jack t o provide power to the computer and charge the battery . 4 Security k eyhole Y our computer comes with a security keyhole.
F or details, refer t o the instructions in “ Attaching an external monitor” on page 48. 3 USB connectors The Universal Serial Bus connectors are used for connecting devices compatible with a USB interface, such as a printer or a digital camera. Note: Y our computer is compatible with USB 1.

5 Hard disk drive Y our computer may have a lar ge-capacity, customer -upgr adable har d disk drive that can meet a variety of stor age demands. T o keep the drive safe, Active P rot ection System ™ is installed on your computer . F or details, refer to “ Active Pr otection System” on page 22.

System-status indicators Note: Y our computer keyboard might look different from the illustration above. The illuminat ed dot in the ThinkP ad logo on the outer lid of your comput er and on the palm r est works as a system-status indicator: it shows whether the computer is in sleep (standby), hibernation, or normal mode.
P ower-status indicators Y our computer has an indicator that shows the status of ac power . Note: Y our computer keyboard might look different from the illustration above. The meaning of the indicator is as follows: • Green: The ac power adapt er is connect ed.
Y ou can nd the machine type and model of your computer in the label as shown below: FCC ID and IC Certication number label There is no FCC ID or IC Certication number for the PCI Express Mini Car d shown on the enclosur e of your computer .
If no integr ated wireless PCI Expr ess Mini Car d has been pr einstalled in your computer , you can install one. T o do this, follow the pr ocedure in Installing and replacing a PCI Express Mini Car d for wireless LAN/WiMAX connection or Installing and replacing the PCI Expr ess Mini C ard for wireless WAN.

Note: If you do not nd the application you need in Contr ol P anel, open the L enovo ThinkV antage T ools application navigation window and double-click the dimmed icon to install the application you need. Then, follow the instructions on the screen.
Active Pr otection System The Active P rotection System pr otects your har d disk drive when the shock sensor inside your computer detects a condition that could damage the drive, such as system tilt, ex cessive vibr ation, or shock.
Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbo x Note: Depending on the dat e when your comput er was manufactur ed, your computer is preinstalled with either the Lenovo Solution Cent er progr am or the Lenovo ThinkV antage T oolbox pr ogr am for diagnostic purposes.
Rescue and Recovery The Rescue and Recovery® pr ogram is a one button r ecovery and r estore solution that includes a set of self-recovery t ools to help you diagnose comput er problems, get help, and recover from syst em cr ashes, even if you cannot start the Windows operating syst em.
Chapter 2. Using your comput er This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Registering your computer ” on page 25 .
• T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans (in Windows XP , power schemes) by use of P ower Manager. • If your comput er will be turned off for an e xtended period of time, you can pr event battery power fr om draining by removing the battery .
T o t oggle the F1-F12 key functionality on the Windows 7 oper ating syst em, do either of the following: • F r om Control P anel: 1. Click Start ➙ Control P anel . 2. In the icons view , click K eyboard and the K eyboard P roperties window is displayed.
Microphone mute (F4) When you pr ess the micr ophone mute k ey, all of the r ecording devices are set on mute or unmute; this is the default setting. Camera mute (F5) During a video confer ence you can contr ol the video str eaming fr om the integr ated camer a by pr essing this key .
Windows key If you pr ess this key, the Start menu of Windows is displayed or hidden. If you press this key and another key at the same time, the System P roperties window or the Computer (in Windows XP , My Comput er) window is displayed. F or details, refer t o the Help in the Windows operating system.

Note: Y our computer keyboard may look slightly different fr om the illustration above. If you ar e not familiar with the T r ackP oint, these instructions will help you get start ed: 1. Place your hands in the typing position, and press gently with either inde x nger on the pointing stick in the direction in which you want the point er to move.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboar d, a new keyboar d is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The t ouch pad consists of a pad 1 and two click buttons below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
F or Windows 7: 1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel . 2. Click Hardware and Sound , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the UltraNav tab and pr oceed to cust omizing the touch pad. F or Windows XP: 1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel .
3. Click the UltraNav tab. 4. Select the check box for Show UltraNav icon on the syst em tray . 5. Click OK or Apply . F or Windows XP: 1. Click Start , and then click Control P anel . 2. Click Printers and Other Hardware , and then click Mouse . 3. Click the UltraNav tab.
3. Plug the power cor d int o an electrical outlet. Tips on using the ac power adapter • When the ac power adapter is not in use, disconnect it fr om the electrical outlet. • Do not bind the power cor d tightly ar ound the ac power adapt er tr ansformer pack when it is connected to the tr ansformer .
• F or Windows XP: Click S tart ➙ All P rograms ➙ ThinkV antage ➙ P ower Manager . F or more information about the P ower Manager pr ogr am, refer to the on-line help of the progr am. P ower -saving modes There ar e several modes that you can use at any time to conserve power .
4. F rom the left pane, select the task folder for which you want t o enable the wakeup function. The scheduled tasks are displayed. 5. Click a scheduled task, and then click the Conditions tab. 6. Under P ower , select the check box for Wak e the computer to run this task .
DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
Connecting to the network Y our computer has one or more network adapt ers for connecting to the Int ernet and to your company's wired LAN or wir eless LAN network. Note: Some models come with a built-in wir eless W AN car d enabling you to establish wir eless connections over remote public or private networks.
Making wireless LAN connections Y our comput er comes with a built-in wir eless networking car d and a congur ation utility to help you mak e wireless connections and monitor the status of your con.
Using Bluetooth F or Windows 7 If your computer is equipped with the Int egrat ed Bluetooth features, you can enable or disable the features by pressing F9. If you pr ess F9, a list of wireless features is displayed. Y ou can enable or disable the Bluetooth features with a single click.
If you ar e using Windows XP and want to use the Micr osoft standar d Bluet ooth featur es, install the software by following the instructions in “Installing the Micr osoft Bluet ooth softwar e in Windows XP” on page 44. F or information about how t o use the Bluetooth function, do as follows: 1.
The Bluetooth Setup Wizard has the following capabilities: • Finding all Bluetooth -enabled devices that can pr ovide services • Finding a specic Bluetooth -enabled device that you want t o use.
2. Click Start ➙ Run . 3. T ype C:SWT OOL SDriversTPBT oo thSe t up.e xe (or specify the full path to the setup.e xe le you have downloaded from http://www.lenovo.com/support); then click OK . 4. Click Ne xt . 5. Select I accept the terms in the license agreement ; then click Ne xt .
Y ou can nd mor e detailed information about the signal str ength and status of your wireless connection by opening Access Connections or by right-clicking the Access Connections Gauge in the task bar and selecting View Status of Wireless Connection .
– P ower to the wir eless radio is on. The signal str ength of the wireless connection is poor . T o impr ove signal strength, move your system closer t o the wireless access point.
F or Windows XP: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Properties . The Display Pr operties window opens. 2. Click the Appearance tab. 3. Under F ont Size , click Large F onts or Extra Large F onts . 4. Click Apply to apply the settings. 5. Click OK .
• If the external TFT monit or you connect has an analog int erface, ickers or ripples may appear on some displays, such as the shutdown screen of Windows. This is caused by the ext ernal TFT monitor , and cannot be x ed by adjusting the e xternal TFT monitor or the comput er side settings.
11. Click Update Driver . The Hardwar e Update Wizar d appears. 12. Click No, not this time , and then click Next . 13. Select Install fr om a list or specic location (Advanced) , and then click Ne xt . 14. Select Don't search. I will choose the driver to install , and then click Ne xt .
1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the monit or connect or; then connect the monit or t o an electrical outlet. 2. T urn on the external monitor . 3. Pr ess F6, then select Extend . T o change the resolution for each monitor , do as follows: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click Scr een resolution .
• Recording and playback of PCM and W A V les in 16-bit or 24-bit format. • Playback of a WA V le at a sample rat e of 44.1KHz to 192 KHz. • Playback of MIDI les thr ough a W ave table synthesizer under Microsoft Windows oper ating systems.
Using a ash media C ard Y our computer has one Media C ard Reader slot. The Media Card Reader slot supports the following cards: • SD car d • SDHC car d • SDXC card • MultiMediaCar d (MMC) .
Removing a ash media card T o remove a ash media car d, do the following: F or Windows 7: • Click the Show hidden icons in the task bar . • Right-click Safely Remove Hardware and Eject Media icon. • Select corr esponding item t o eject the card fr om the Windows operating system.
Chapter 3. Y ou and your computer This chapt er provides you information about accessibility and tr aveling with your computer . This chapter contains the following topics: • “ Accessibility and c.
screen clean and set the brightness to levels that enable you to see the scr een clearly . P ress Home or End to adjust display brightness. 1. While it is safe to allow your comput er to go through the x r ay machines at airport security stations, it is important to keep your eyes on the comput er at all times t o prevent theft. 2. Consider bringing an airplane or aut omobile adapter for your computer .

10. Commit your passwor d t o memory . Note: Y ou might want t o not e your power -on passwor d in a safe place. Otherwise, if you forget it, you have to tak e your computer t o a Lenovo reseller or a marketing repr esentative to have the password canceled.
12. If you select User+ Master , a message window opens and prompts you to set up a user har d disk password rst. Click Continue . 13. A new hard disk user password window opens. T ype your new passwor d in the Enter New P assword eld. 14. Pr ess Enter once to move to the ne xt line.
• T o change the master hard disk passwor d, type the curr ent master hard disk passwor d in the Ent er Current P assword eld. Then type the new master hard disk passwor d in the Enter New P assword eld, and retype the password you just enter ed to verify it in the Conrm New P assword eld.
1. Print these instructions. 2. Save all open les, and e xit all applications. 3. T urn your computer off and then turn it on again. 4. When the logo screen is displayed, pr ess F1. The ThinkPad Setup window opens. 5. Select Security , using the cursor directional keys to move down the menu.

Notice on deleting data from your har d disk drive As computers spread into every corner of life, they process more and more information. The data on your computer , some of which is sensitive, is stor ed on a hard disk drive (HDD). Befor e you dispose of, sell, or hand over your computer , make sur e to delete data st ored on it.

Chapter 5. Recovery over view This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions pr ovided by L enovo. This chapter contains the following topics: • “Creating and using recovery media.
Creating recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to cr eate r ecovery media on the Windows 7 operating system. Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can cr eate r ecovery media using discs or ext ernal USB stor age devices.
3. Select the optical drive with the boot disc as the startup device and press Enter . After a short delay, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4. On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your system . 5. F ollow the instructions on the screen.

F ollow the instructions on the scr een to complet e the recovery operation. • T o perform a r ecovery oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows XP oper ating system, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows deskt op, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ ThinkV antage ➙ Rescue and Recovery .
• T o restor e your har d disk drive fr om a Rescue and Recovery backup or to r estore your hard disk drive to the fact ory default settings, click Restor e your system and follow the instructions on the screen. F or more information about the features of the Rescue and Recovery workspace, click Help .
3. On the Startup Device Menu , select the desir ed optical drive as the rst boot device. Then, insert the r escue disc int o the optical drive and pr ess Enter . The rescue medium starts. • If you have cr eated a rescue medium using a USB hard disk drive, use the following instructions to use the rescue medium: 1.
-OR- • If the subfolder for the device contains a le of setup information (a le with the ext ension .inf ), you can use the Add New Har dware progr am (in the Windows Control P anel) t o r einstall the device driver . Not all device drivers can be reinstalled by use of this progr am.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can increase the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by replacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. Or , if you need to, you can r eplace the PCI Express Mini C ard by following the pr ocedures in this section.
Prer equisites for the procedure DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion. The battery pack contains a small amount of harmful substances. T o avoid possible injury: • Replace only with a battery of the type recommended by L enovo.
4. Insert a fully charged batt ery until it clicks into place 1 as shown in the drawing, and then slide the battery latch t o the locked position 2 . 5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables to the comput er . Replacing the har d disk drive Before you start, print these instructions.
3. Remove the battery . F or mor e information about how to r emove the battery, refer t o “Replacing the battery” on page 77. 4. Loosen the screws 1 , and then r emove the cover 2 . 5. Remove the screws 1 , and then slide the hard disk drive towar ds the front of the system 2 .
6. Remove the hard disk drive by lifting its upper side. 7. Place the new har d disk drive fr om the lower side as shown in the pictur e. 8. Slide the har d disk drive rmly int o the connector 1 , and then reinstall the scr ews 2 .
9. Attach the cover 1 , pivot it downwar ds, and then tighten the screws 2 . 10. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 77 . 11. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables to the comput er .
5. Loosen the screw . 6. Pull out the drive. T o install a repaired drive or a new one, do as follows: Chapter 6 . Replacing devices 83.
1. Insert the drive in the bay, and then pr ess it rmly into the connector . 2. Reinstall the screw . 3. Attach the cover 1 , pivot it downwar ds, and then tighten the screws 2 .
5. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables to the comput er; then turn it on. ThinkP ad Edge E520 Before you start, print these instructions. An optical drive is pr einstalled in the bay . If it needs to be repair ed, r emove it as follows: 1.
1. Insert the drive in the bay, and then pr ess it rmly to the connect or . 2. Reinstall the scr ew 1 , and tighten it 2 . 3. Put the battery in place. 4. T urn the computer over again. Connect the ac power adapt er and the cables to the comput er; then turn it on.
DANGER Electric current from power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables befor e opening the cover of this slot. Attention: Befor e you start installing a PCI Expr ess Mini Card, t ouch a metal table or a grounded metal object.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.
7. Align the contact edge of the new PCI Expr ess Mini C ard with the corr esponding socket 1 . Pivot the card until you can snap it int o place. Secur e the car d with the screw 2 . 8. Connect the antenna cables to the new PCI Express Mini C ard as shown in the dr awing.
10. Reinstall the battery . F or more information about how to r einstall the battery, refer to “Replacing the battery” on page 77. 11. T urn the comput er over again.
5. If a tool for r emoving connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it to disconnect the cables fr om the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.

• Problem : Y ou search for a Bluet ooth -enabled device by clicking View devices in r ange in My Bluetooth Places, but you cannot nd anything. Solution : Make sur e that the device to which you want t o connect is enabled for the Bluetooth connection.
• Problem : Bluet ooth serial port was disconnected automatically . Solution : When any serial-based connection is established, an inactivity timer starts. If no application opens the port, the connection is ended automatically . This is a normal char acteristic of the serial-based connection and is not a defect.
K eyboard and other pointing devices The following ar e the most common keyboar d and other pointing devices pr oblems: UltraNav problems • Problem : The pointer drifts when the computer is turned on or after it r esumes normal oper ation. Solution : The point er might drift when you ar e not using the T rackP oint during normal oper ation.
• Problem : All or some keys on the external numeric keypad do not work. Solution : Make sur e that the e xternal numeric keypad is corr ectly connect ed to the comput er .

Solution : Dischar ge and r echarge the batt ery pack. If your batt ery's operating time is still short, use a new batt ery pack. • Problem : The computer does not oper ate with a fully charged batt ery pack. Solution : The sur ge protect or in the battery pack might be active.
g. W ait for 30 seconds, and then reinstall the SO-DIMM and the known good battery or the ac power adapter to test the computer with minimal devices attached rst. h.
