Chapter 1. About this manual This Hardware Maintenance Manual contains information to help you solve problems that might occur in your server . It describes the diagnostic tools that come with the server, error codes and suggested actions, and instructions for r eplacing failing components.

CA UTION: When replacing the lithium battery, use only a type battery recommended by the manufacturer . If your system has a module containing a lithium battery, replace it only with the same module type made by the same manufacturer . Chapter 2. General information This chapt er provides general information that applies to all machine types support ed by this publication. F eatur es and specications The following information is a summary of the features and specications of the server.

Chapter 3. General Checkout Attention The drives in the servers you ar e servicing might have been r earranged or the drive startup sequence might have been changed. Be extr emely careful during writ e operations such as copying, saving, or formatting.
– If it has been working, what changes wer e made prior to it failing? – Is this the original r eported failur e? • Diagnostics version – T ype and version level • Hardwar e congur ation .
Chapter 4. Diagnostics Diagnostic progr ams are used t o test har dware components of your server . Diagnostic pr ograms are also used t o report operating-system-contr olled settings that interfer e with the correct operation of your server . Notes: 1.
• The Ent er key is used to select a menu item. • The Esc key is used t o back up to the pr evious menu. • F or online help, select F1. Running tests There are four ways to run the diagnostic t ests. • Using the cursor movement keys, highlight Run Normal T est or Run Quick T est fr om the Diagnostics menu and then press Enter .
Quick and F ull erase - hard disk drive The diagnostics progr am offers two har d disk drive formatting utilities: • Quick Er ase Hard Drive • F ull Er ase Hard Drive Quick Erase Har d Drive provides a DOS utility that performs the following: • Destroys the Master Boot Recor d (MBR) on the hard disk drive.
Error FRU/Action The start-up drive is not in the boot sequence in conguration. Check the congur ation and ensur e the start-up drive is in the boot sequence. No operating system installed on the boot drive. Install an oper ating system on the boot drive.
Beep Symptom FRU/Action 1 long and 3 short beeps Keyboar d err or P erform the following actions in order . 1. Mak e sure the keyboard is properly connect ed to the keyboard connector . 2. Chapter 5. L ocating Server Contr ols and connectors This section describes the contr ols and light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and how to turn the server on and off. F ront view F ront contr ol and connector locations shows the locations of the contr ols and connect ors on the front of your server .

Connector Description USB connect or Used to attach a device that requires a USB connector , such as a USB keyboard, a USB mouse, a USB scanner , or a USB printer . If you have more than eight USB devices, you can purchase a USB hub, which you can use to connect additional USB devices.
Internal components Figure 4 “Component locations” on page 26 shows the locations of the various components in your server . T o remove the server cover and access to the inside of the server , see “Removing the server cover” on page 30. Figure 4.
Chapter 6. Replacing FRUs Important: Before you r eplacing FRUs, make sure that the server is working correctly . Start the ser ver , and make sur e that the oper ating system star ts, if an oper ating system is installed. If the server is not working correctly, see the Chapt er 4 “Diagnostics” on page 13 for diagnostic information.
7. Check for worn, frayed, or pinched cables. 8. Mak e sure that the power-supply cover fasteners (scr ews or rivets) have not been r emoved or tamper ed with.
T o reduce the possibility of damage from electr ostatic discharge, observe the following pr ecautions: • Limit your movement. Movement can cause static electricity to build up ar ound you. • The use of a gr ounding syst em is r ecommended. F or example, wear an electr ostatic-discharge wrist strap, if one is available.
Replacing FRUs This section provides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your server . Y ou can expand the capabilities of your server and maintain your ser ver by installing or replacing hardwar e.

CA UTION: The heat sink and micropr ocessor might be ver y hot. T urn off the server and wait three to ve minutes to let the server cool before removing the server cover . T o r eplace the micr oprocessor , do the following: 1. Remove all media fr om the drives and turn off all attached devices and the server .
d. Do not drop anything onto the micr oprocessor socket while it is e xposed. The socket pins must be kept as clean as possible. Figure 24. Removing the microprocessor 7. Mak e sure that the small handle is in the r aised position and the micr oprocessor retainer is fully open.
4. Remove all memory modules and PCI cards that are curr ently installed. See “Installing or r eplacing a memory module” on page 36 and “Installing or replacing a PCI car d” on page 32. 5. Remove the secondary har d disk drive. See “Replacing the secondary har d disk drive” on page 40.
The failing system boar d must be returned with a micr oprocessor socket cover t o protect the pins during shipping and handling. T o install the micropr ocessor socket cover: 1. Remove the micr oprocessor from the micropr ocessor socket. See “Replacing the micr oprocessor” on page 45 .

4. Disconnect the rear fan assembly cable fr om the system fan connect or on the system board. See “System-boar d internal connectors” on page 25. 5. The rear fan assembly is attached to the chassis by four rubber mounts. Remove the r ear fan assembly by cutting the rubber mounts and gently pulling the rear fan assembly out of the chassis.

Chapter 8. Conguring the server This chapter provides instructions on how to congure your server . This chapt er pr ovides information on the following topics: • “Using the Setup Utility pro.
When working with the Setup Utility pr ogram menu, you must use the keyboar d. The keys used to perform various tasks ar e displayed at the bott om of each screen. Using passwor ds By using the Setup Utility pr ogram, you can set passwords to pr event unauthorized access t o your server and data.
2. F rom the Setup Utility pr ogram main menu, select Security . 3. Depending on the password type, select Set P ower-On P assword , Set Administr ator Passwor d , or Hard Disk Security ® Hard Disk P assword . 4. F ollow the instructions on the right side of the screen to set, change, or delete a passwor d.
T o view or permanently change the congured startup device sequence, do the following: 1. Start the Setup Utility pr ogram. See “S tarting the Setup Utility program” on page 77. 2. F rom the Setup Utility pr ogram main menu, select Startup ® Primary Boot Sequence .
