Chapter 1. Important safety information CAUTION: Before using this manual, it is important that you read and understand all the related safety information for this product. Refer to the Safety and Warranty Guide that you received with this product for the latest safety information.

Chapter 2. Overview This guide provides information about r eplacing Customer Replaceable Units (CRUs). This guide does not include procedur es for all parts. It is expected that cables, switches, and certain mechanical parts be replaced by trained service personnel without the need for step-by-step procedur es.
Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-protective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed fr om the computer and you are r eady to install the new part. Static electricity , although harmless to you, can seriously damage computer components and parts.
Locations This chapter provides illustrations to help locate the various connectors, contr ols, and components of the computer . Locating controls and connectors on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the location of the contr ols and connectors on the front of your computer .
Locating connectors on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the location of connectors on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description Standard mouse connector Used to attach a mouse, trackball, or other pointing device that uses a standard mouse connector . Standard keyboar d connector Used to attach a keyboard that uses a standar d keyboard connector .
Locating components To remove the computer cover , see “Removing the cover” on page 11 . Figure 3 shows the location of the various components in your computer .

Chapter 3. Installing options and replacing hardware This chapter provides an intr oduction to the features and options that ar e available for your computer .
5. If there ar e thumbscrews securing the cover , remove them. 6. Press the cover -release button on the side of the computer cover , slide the cover to the rear , and then remove the cover . Removing and replacing the front bezel This section provides instr uctions on how to remove and replace the fr ont bezel.
2. Remove the front bezel by releasing the thr ee plastic tabs on the left side and pivoting the bezel outward. Car efully set the bezel to the side without disconnecting the power switch and LED assembly cable.
Installing internal options Important Read “Handling static-sensitive devices” on page 4 before r emoving the computer cover . Installing memory Y our computer has four connectors for installing dual inline memory modules (DIMMs) that provide up to a maximum of 8.
4. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the connector key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the connector until the retaining clips close. What to do next: v To work with another option, go to the appropriate section.
2. At the rear of the computer , press the r elease button 1 to open the adapter latch 2 and remove the slot cover . 3. Remove the adapter from its static-protective package. 4. Install the adapter into the appropriate connector on the system board.
5. Pivot the adapter latch to the closed position to secure the adapters. What to do next: v To work with another option, go to the appropriate section. v To complete the installation, go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 43.
Installing internal drives This section provides information and instr uctions for installing internal drives. Internal drives are devices that your computer uses to r ead and store data. Yo u can add drives to your computer to increase storage capacity and to enable your computer to read other types of media.
Figure 11 shows the location of the drive bays. The following list describes the types and size of drives that you can install in each bay: 1 Bay 1 - Maximum height: 43.0 mm (1.7 in.) v Optical drive such as CD drive or DVD drive (preinstalled in some models) v 5.
2. Remove the front bezel by releasing the thr ee plastic tabs on the left side and pivoting the bezel outward. Car efully set the bezel to the side without disconnecting the power switch and LED assembly cable. Note: Notice the spare r etainer bracket 1 attached to the side of the upper drive cage.
7. For a 5.25-inch drive, install a retainer bracket on the side of the drive. 8. For a 3.5-inch drive, you must use a Universal Adapter Bracket, 5.25 to 3.5-inch. Yo u can obtain a Universal Adapter Bracket, 5.25 to 3.5-inch from a local computer retailer or by contacting the Customer Support Center .
3. Connect one end of the signal cable to the drive and the other to the IDE connector on the system board. 4. Locate the extra four-wir e power connector and connect it to the drive. Connecting a serial ATA drive A serial optical or additional hard disk drive can be connected to any available S ATA IDE connector .
Replacing the battery Y our computer has a special type of memory that maintains the date, time, and settings for built-in features, such as parallel-port assignments (configuration). A battery keeps this information active when you turn off the computer .

Replacing the heat sink Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer . To obtain a copy of the Safety and Warranty Guide , go to the Support We b site at http://www .
7. Position the new heat sink on the microprocessor socket and then position the clamp on the plastic retention bracket. Pivot the handle 1 to clamp the heat sink to the plastic retention bracket. 8. Reconnect the heat sink and the fan assembly cable to the system board.
3. Press the blue r elease tab 1 down, slide the hard drive cage 2 back, and pivot it outward. 4. Remove the hard disk drive cage from the chassis by simply sliding it outward. 5. Pull on the blue handle 3 to release and remove har d disk drive from drive cage.
7. To install the new hard disk drive into the blue bracket, flex the bracket and align the pins 1 through 4 on the bracket with the holes in the har d disk drive. See Figure 23. Do not touch the cir cuit board 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive.
9. Align the drive cage pivot pin with the slot 1 in the upper drive cage and slide the hard disk drive cage into the chassis. 10. Connect the signal and power cables to the rear of the new hard disk drive. 11 . Press down on the metal latch 2 and pivot in the drive cage into place and then slide it forward until it snaps into position.
Note: If needed, there is a spar e retainer bracket 1 attached to the side of the upper drive cage. 4. Remove the retainer bracket from the drive being r eplaced and install it on the new drive. 5. Slide the new optical drive into the bay from the front until it snaps into position.
7. Go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 43. Replacing the diskette drive Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading the “Important safety information” in the Safety and Warranty Guide that was included with your computer .
5. Remove the retainer bracket from the failing diskette drive and install it on the new diskette drive. 6. Slide the new diskette drive into the drive bay until it snaps into position. 7. Connect the flat cable to the new diskette drive. 8. Go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 43.
4. Position the replacement memory module over the memory connector . Make sure the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the connector key 2 on the system board. Push the memory module straight down into the connector until the retaining clips close.
2. At the rear of the computer , press the r elease button 1 to open the adapter latch 2 and remove the adapter by pulling it straight out of the adapter connector .
3. Install the new adapter into the same adapter connector . 4. Ensure the adapter is fully seated into the adapter connector . 5. At the rear of the computer , pivot the adapter latch to the closed position to secure the adapter . 6. Go to Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 43.

6. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the fan assembly is in place. 7. Connect the front fan assembly cable to the power fan connector on the system board.
3. Pull the rear fan assembly out of the chassis. 4. Install the new rear fan assembly by aligning the rubber mounts of the r ear fan assembly with the holes on the chassis and push the rubber mounts through the holes.
5. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the fan assembly is in place. 6. Connect the rear fan assembly cable to the system fan connector on the system board.
3. Locate the keyboard connector . See Figure 35. Note: Y our keyboard might be connected to a standard keyboar d connector 1 or a USB connector 2 .

Chapter 4. Completing the parts replacement After replacing the parts, you need to close the cover and r econnect cables, including telephone lines and power cords. Also, depending on the part that was replaced, you might need to confirm the updated information in the Setup Utility program.

Chapter 5. Security features To help prevent har dware theft and unauthorized access to your computer , several security lock options are available. In addition to a physical lock, unauthorized use of your computer can be prevented by a softwar e lock that locks the keyboard until a correct passwor d is typed in.
Padlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop such that the cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed. Password protection To deter unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility program to set a passwor d.
3. Move the jumper from the standard position (pins 1 and 2) to the maintenance or configure position (pins 2 and 3). 4. Replace the computer cover and connect the power cord. See Chapter 4, “Completing the parts replacement,” on page 43. 5. Restart the computer , leave it on for approximately 10 seconds.
