Chapter 1. Product overview This chapter provides information about the computer featur es, specifications, preinstalled softwar e programs, and locations of connectors, components, parts on the system board, and internal drives.

Locations This section provides information to help you locate your computer connectors, components, parts on the system board, and internal drives. Locating connectors, controls, and indicators on the front of your computer Figure 1 shows the locations of the connectors, controls, and indicators on the front of your computer .
Locating connectors and parts on the rear of your computer Figure 2 shows the locations of the connectors and parts on the rear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer ar e color-coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description Audio line-in connector Used to receive audio signals fr om an external audio device, such as a stereo system. When you attach an external audio device, a cable is connected between the audio line-out connector of the device and the audio line-in connector of the computer .
Locating components Figure 3 shows the locations of the various components in your computer . T o remove the computer cover and gain access to the inside of the computer , see “Removing the computer cover” on page 14.

Chapter 2. Installing or replacing hardware This chapter provides instr uctions on how to install or replace hardwar e for your computer . This chapter contains the following topics: v “Handling sta.
Installing external options Y ou can install external options to your computer , such as external speakers, a printer , or a scanner . For some external options, you must install additional software in addition to making the physical connection.
5. Remove the two screws that secur e the computer cover and slide the computer cover to the rear to r emove it. Removing and reinstalling the front bezel Attention Do not open your computer or attemp.
3. Remove the front bezel by r eleasing the three plastic tabs on the left side and pivoting the front bezel outwar d. 4. T o reinstall the front bezel, align the other thr ee plastic tabs on the righ.
Installing or replacing a PCI card Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . 4. Do one of the following: v If you are r eplacing a PCI card, open the PCI card latch and r emove the old PCI card that is curr ently installed as shown in Figure 10. Note: If the PCI card is secur ed in place by a retaining latch 1 , press the retaining latch to r elease the PCI card from the latch.
6. Install the new PCI card into the appr opriate PCI card slot on the system board. Then, pivot the PCI car d latch to the closed position to secure the PCI cards. 7. Reinstall the screw to secur e the PCI card latch in place. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section.
T o install or replace a memory module, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn of f all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer .
7. Position the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the new memory module is aligned with the key 2 in the memory slot. Then, press the new memory module straight down into the memory slot until the retaining clips close and the new memory module snaps into position.
T o replace the battery , do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn of f all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer .
Replacing the power supply assembly Attention Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer . T o obtain a copy of the ThinkCentre Safety and Warranty Guide ,g ot o : http://www .
4. Lay the computer on its side and remove the four scr ews that secure the power supply assembly . Then, slide the power supply assembly to the front of the chassis. 5. Pivot the power supply assembly as shown and then lift the power supply assembly to remove it fr om the chassis.
v If the voltage supply range in your local country or region is 200–240 V ac, set the voltage-selection switch to 230 V . 7. Install the new power supply assembly into the chassis so that the screw holes in the new power supply assembly are aligned with the corr esponding holes in the rear of the chassis.
7. Follow this sequence to remove the four scr ews that secure the heat sink and fan assembly to the system board: a. Partially remove scr ew 1 , then fully remove screw 2 , and then fully remove scr ew 1 . b. Partially remove scr ew 3 , then fully remove screw 4 , and then fully remove scr ew 3 .
11 . Connect the new heat sink and fan assembly cable to the microprocessor fan connector on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 1 1. 12. Reconnect any cables that have been removed. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section.
7. Lift the small handle 3 and open the retainer 1 to access the micropr ocessor 2 . 8. Lift the micropr ocessor straight up and out of the microprocessor socket, as shown in Figure 21 on page 29. Notes: a. Y our microprocessor and socket might look dif ferent from the one illustrated.
d. Do not drop anything onto the micr oprocessor socket while it is exposed. The socket pins must be kept as clean as possible. 9. Make sure that the small handle is in the raised position. 10. Remove the new micropr ocessor 1 from the protective cover 2 that protects the gold contacts of the new micr oprocessor .
What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section. v T o complete the replacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 37.

This section provides instr uctions on how to replace the hard disk drive. T o replace the hard disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn of f all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cords fr om electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connected to the computer .
6. Slide the new hard disk drive into the har d disk drive bay and align the screw holes in the new hard disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay .

10. Reinstall the front bezel. See “Removing and r einstalling the front bezel” on page 15. What to do next: v T o work with another piece of hardware, go to the appr opriate section. v T o complete the replacement, go to “Completing the parts replacement” on page 37.
6. Remove the rear fan assembly out of the chassis. 7. Install the new rear fan assembly by aligning the r ubber mounts of the rear fan assembly with the holes on the chassis and push the rubber mounts through the holes. 8. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is in place.
3. Connect the cable of the new USB keyboard or mouse to one of the USB connectors on the computer . Depending on where you want to connect the new USB keyboard or mouse, see “Locating connectors, contr ols, and indicators on the front of your computer” on page 7 or “Locating connectors and parts on the rear of your computer” on page 8.
4. Position the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the computer cover engage the rails. Then, slide the computer cover to the front of the computer until it snaps into position and is closed. Then, install the two screws to secur e the computer cover .
Integrated cable lock An integrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer to a desk, table, or other non-permanent fixtur e. The cable lock attaches to a security slot at the rear of your computer and is operated with a key .
Padlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop so that the computer cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed. Password protection T o deter unauthorized use of your computer , you can use the Setup Utility program to set a passwor d.
6. Reinstall any parts and reconnect any cables that have been r emoved or disconnected. 7. Reinstall the computer cover and reconnect the power cor ds for the computer and monitor . See “Completing the parts replacement” on page 37. 8. T urn on the computer and leave it on for approximately 10 seconds.

Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapter contains the following topics: v “Creating and using r ecovery media.
v T o create Product Recovery discs on the W indows V ista operating system, click Start → All Programs → ThinkV antage → Create Product Recovery Media .
3. Select the optical drive with the boot disc as the startup device and press Enter . After a short delay , the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. 4. On the Rescue and Recovery menu, click Restore your system . 5. Follow the instructions on the scr een.
1. From the W indows desktop, click Start → All Programs → Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools → Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery program opens. 2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow .
Attention: If you restor e the hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup or restor e the hard disk drive to the factory default settings, all files on the primary hard disk drive partition (usually drive C:) will be deleted in the r ecovery process.
v T o create a rescue medium on the W indows 7 operating system, do the following: 1. From the W indows desktop, click Start → All Programs → Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools → Enhanced Backup and Restore . The Rescue and Recovery program opens. 2. In the Rescue and Recovery main window , click the Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery arrow .
disk drive by yourself. If you want to install a secondary hard disk drive, see “Replacing the hard disk drive” on page 31. When the rescue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
recovery media, you might not have the r escue device (an internal hard disk drive, a disc, a USB hard disk drive, or other external devices) set as the first boot device in the startup device sequence. Y ou must first make sure that your rescue device is set as the first boot device in the startup device sequence in the Setup Utility program.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility program Y ou can use the Setup Utility program to view and change the configuration settings of your computer , regar dless of which operating system you are using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility program.
Password considerations A password can be any combination of up to 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric characters. For security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised. T o set a strong passwor d, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility program passwor ds are not case sensitive.
Enabling or disabling a device This section provides instr uctions on how to enable or disable user access to a device. SA T A Controller When this option is set to Disabled , all devices connected to the SA T A connectors (such as the hard disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the system configuration.
Note: Selecting a startup device on the Startup Device Menu does not permanently change the startup device sequence. V iewing or changing the startup device sequence This section provides instr uctions on how to view or permanently change the configured startup device sequence.
Chapter 5. Updating system programs This chapter provides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to recover fr om a POST and BIOS update failure.
4. When prompted to change the serial number , it is suggested that you do not make this change by pressing N. However , if you do want to change the serial number , press Y , then type in the serial number and press Enter . 5. When prompted to change the machine type and model, it is suggested that you do not make this change by pressing N.
8. T urn on the computer and then insert the POST and BIOS update (flash update) disc into the optical drive. The recovery session begins. The r ecovery session will take two to three minutes.

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostic programs This chapter provides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic programs. If your computer pr oblem is not described in this chapter , see Chapter 7, “Getting information, help, and service,” on page 63 for additional troubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that you list the device where the operating system resides in the startup device sequence. Usually , the operating system is on the hard disk drive. For more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 53.
1. T urn off the computer . 2. Repeatedly press and r elease the F1 1 key when turning on the computer . When you hear beeps or see a logo screen, r elease the F1 1 key . The Rescue and Recovery workspace opens after a short delay . 3. From the Rescue and Recovery workspace, select Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery → Diagnose hardware .
Cleaning an optical mouse This section provides instr uctions on how to clean an optical mouse. An optical mouse uses a LED and an optical sensor to navigate the pointer . If the pointer on the screen does not move smoothly with the optical mouse, you might need to clean the mouse.
