Locating connect ors and parts on the rear of your computer Figure 2 “Rear connect or and part locations” on page 7 shows the locations of the connect ors and parts on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer are color -coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .

Chapter 2. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace har dware for your computer . This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Handli.

Removing and reinstalling the front bez el Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your comput er .
4. T o reinstall the fr ont bezel, align the other three plastic tabs on the bottom of the fr ont bezel with the corresponding holes in the chassis, then pivot the front bez el inward until it snaps into position. Figure 8. Reinstalling the front bez el 5.

This section provides instructions on how t o install or r eplace a PCI card. Y our computer has two standar d PCI card slots, one PCI Express x1 car d slot, and one PCI Express x16 graphics car d slot. See “L ocating parts on the system boar d” on page 8.

5. Install the new PCI car d into the appr opriate PCI card slot on the syst em board. Then, install the screw to secur e the new PCI car d in place. Figure 12. Installing the PCI card 6. If necessary, connect any cables between the PCI car d and the syst em board.
4. Locat e the memory slots on the syst em board. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 8. 5. Remove any parts and disconnect any cables that might pr event your access t o the memory slots.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e that the notch 1 on the new memory module is aligned with the key 2 in the memory slot. Then, pr ess the new memory module str aight down into the memory slot until the retaining clips close and the new memory module snaps int o position.

T o r eplace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er .

11. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct are aligned with those in the heat sink and fan assembly . Install the two screws to secur e the heat sink fan duct.
3. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly . See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 21. Note: Place the heat sink and fan assembly on its side so that the thermal gr ease on the bottom of it does not get in contact with anything. 4. Lift the small handle 3 and open the r etainer 1 t o access the micropr ocessor 2 .

Replacing the power supply assembly Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any repair befor e r eading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your comput er . 4. Pivot the drive bay assembly upward, r emove the two screws that secure the heat sink fan duct, and then lift the heat sink fan duct out of the chassis. Figure 23. Removing the heat sink fan duct 5. Disconnect the power supply assembly cables fr om all drives and fr om the 24-pin power connector and 4-pin power connector on the syst em board.
6. At the r ear of the comput er , r emove the thr ee scr ews that secure the power supply assembly . P ress the power supply clip 1 downward to release the power supply assembly and then slide the power supply assembly to the fr ont of the computer .
8. Install the new power supply assembly int o the chassis so that the screw holes in the new power supply assembly are aligned with the corresponding holes in the r ear of the chassis. Then, install the three screws to secur e the new power supply assembly in place.
10. Lower and position the heat sink fan duct on the top of the heat sink and fan assembly until the two screw holes in the heat sink fan duct ar e aligned with the corr esponding holes in the heat sink and fan assembly . Then, install the two scr ews to secur e the heat sink fan duct in place.
6. Hold the optical drive and remove the two scr ews that secure the optical drive. Figure 27. Removing the optical drive screws 7. Pr ess the drive bay assembly clip 1 inward and pivot the drive bay assembly downwar d as shown.
8. Slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . Figure 29. Removing the optical drive 9. Slide the new optical drive int o the optical drive bay fr om the fr ont of the comput er .
10. Hold the new optical drive and pivot the drive bay assembly upwar d. Align the scr ew holes in the new optical drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay . Then, install the two scr ews to secur e the new optical drive in place. Figure 31.
This section provides instructions on how to r eplace the hard disk drive. T o r eplace the har d disk drive, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er .
5. Hold the hard disk drive and r emove the four screws that secur e the har d disk drive. Then, r emove the hard disk drive from the drive bay assembly and disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the rear of the har d disk drive to completely r emove it from the chassis.
7. P osition the new har d disk drive int o the har d disk drive bay and align the scr ew holes in the new har d disk drive with the corr esponding holes in the drive bay . Then, install the four scr ews t o secur e the new har d disk drive in place. Figure 36.

9. Install the new fr ont fan assembly by aligning the new rubber mounts that came with the new front fan assembly with the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and then push the rubber mounts through the holes. Then, car efully pull on the tips of the rubber mounts fr om the bott om until the new front fan assembly is secur ed in place.
This section pr ovides instructions on how to replace the USB keyboar d or mouse. T o r eplace the USB keyboard or mouse, do the following: 1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cords from electrical outlets.
5. P osition the computer cover on the chassis so that the r ail guides on the comput er cover engage the rails on the chassis. Then, slide the computer cover t o the fr ont of the computer until it snaps into position and is closed. Then, install the two scr ews to secur e the computer cover .
Integr ated cable lock An int egrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer t o a desk, table, or other non-permanent xtur e. The cable lock attaches t o a security slot at the rear of your computer and is oper ated with a key .
P adlock Y our computer is equipped with a padlock loop so that the comput er cover cannot be r emoved when a padlock is installed. Figure 42. Installing a padlock P assword protection T o det er unauthoriz ed use of your comput er , you can use the Setup Utility pr ogram to set a password.
5. Move the jumper from the standard position (pin 1 and pin 2) t o the maintenance position (pin 2 and pin 3). 6. Reinstall any parts and r econnect any cables that have been r emoved or disconnect ed. 7. Reinstall the computer cover and reconnect the power cords for the computer and monit or .
Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Creating and using recovery me.
Using recovery media This section provides instructions on how t o use r ecovery media on differ ent oper ating systems. • On the Windows 7 oper ating system and the Windows Vista oper ating system, you can use recovery media t o rest ore the comput er to the fact ory default settings only .

Using the Rescue and Recover y workspace The Rescue and Recovery workspace resides in a prot ected, hidden area of your har d disk drive that operat es independently fr om the Windows operating system. This enables you t o perform recovery operations even if you cannot start the Windows oper ating system.
Notes: 1. The recovery oper ations you can perform using a r escue medium vary depending on the oper ating system. 2. The rescue disc can be start ed in all types of optical drives.
Installing or r einstalling device drivers Before installing or reinstalling device drivers, make sur e that you have a preinstalled oper ating system and the documentation and software media for the device.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A password can be any combination of up t o 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwords ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Controller When this option is set t o Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connectors (such as the har d disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the syst em congur ation. USB Setup Use this option to set up USB connect ors.
2. Select Startup ➙ Primary Boot Sequence . Read the information displayed on the right side of the screen. 3. Select the rst boot device, second boot device, and so on. 4. Pr ess Esc t o return t o the Startup menu. Then, select the devices for the Automatic Boot Sequence and Error Boot Sequence .
Chapter 5. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POS T and BIOS update failure.
5. When prompted t o change the machine type and model, it is suggest ed that you do not make this change by pr essing N. However , if you do want to change the machine type and model, pr ess Y , then type in the machine type and model and pr ess Ent er .

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostic programs This chapt er pr ovides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer problem is not described in this chapt er , see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 63 for additional tr oubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that you list the device wher e the oper ating system resides in the startup device sequence. Usually, the oper ating syst em is on the hard disk drive. F or mor e information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 53 .
3. F r om the Rescue and Recovery workspace, select Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery ➙ Diagnose hardware . The PC-Doct or for Rescue and Recovery pr ogram opens. 4. Select the desir ed diagnostic test. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een.
2. Disconnect the mouse cable fr om the computer . 3. T urn the mouse upside down to check the lens. a. If ther e is a smudge on the lens, gently clean the area with a plain cott on-tipped swab. b. If there is debris in the lens, gently blow the debris away fr om the area.
