Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter pr ovides information on using some of the computer components. • “F r equently ask ed questions” on page 13 • “Tips on using your comput er” on.
Solution: A compatible device driver is a requir ement to ensur e corr ect operation and performance of each component in your computer . If your comput er is preinstalled with an oper ating syst em, Lenovo provides all device drivers that you need on the hard disk drive.
Putting the comput er into sleep mode or shutting it down T o conserve power , put the computer int o sleep mode or shut it down when the comput er is not in use. Putting your computer into sleep mode If you will be away from your computer for a short time, put the comput er int o sleep mode.
• The way you use your computer: how often you access the har d disk drive, how bright you make the computer display . Using the ac power adapter The power to run your computer can come either from the lithium-ion battery pack pr ovided with it, or from ac power through the ac power adapter .
• Use the battery until the charge is complet ely depleted; that is, use the battery until the battery status indicator starts blinking orange. • Recharge the batt ery complet ely befor e using it. The batt ery is fully char ged if the battery indicator shows green when the ac power adapter is plugged in.

Replacing a memory module Before you start, print these instructions. Prer equisites for the procedure Note: The oper ating speed of the memory module has dependency on the system conguration. In some conditions, the memory module in your comput er might not be able t o oper at e at the maximum speed.
6. Find the notch on the contact edge side of the memory module you ar e installing. Attention: T o avoid damaging the memory module, do not touch its contact edge.
5. If one memory modules is alr eady in the memory slot, press out on the latches on both edges of the socket at the same time 3 , and then r emove the memory module 4 to make room for the new one. Save the removed memory module for future use. 3 4 3 6.
Prer equisites for the procedure DANGER During electrical storms, do not connect the cable to or disconnect it from the telephone outlet on the wall. DANGER Electric current fr om power , telephone, and communication cables is hazardous. T o avoid shock hazard, disconnect the cables before opening the cover of this slot.

2 1 1 5. If a tool for removing connectors is included in the package with the new car d, use it t o disconnect the cables 3 fr om the car d. If no such tool is included, disconnect the cables by picking up the connectors with your ngers and gently unplugging them.

Chapter 8. P r eventing problems An important part of owning a L enovo notebook computer is maint enance. With proper car e, you can avoid common pr oblems.
T aking care of your computer Although your comput er is designed to function reliably in normal work envir onments, you need t o use common sense in handling it. By following these important tips, you will get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer .
• Be sure to turn off the power and close the L CD when not in use. • When you leave the computer in your car , place it on the back seat to avoid being insolated.

The battery pack cannot be char ged. Y ou cannot char ge the battery when it is too hot. If the batt ery feels hot, r emove it fr om the comput er and allow it t o cool t o r oom temper atur e. Aft er it cools, r einstall it and rechar ge the battery .
• If the power indicator is in blinking, pr ess the power button to r esume from the sleep mode. • Pr ess Fn+F2 to conrm whether the L CD scr een has been turned off. If the problem persist, follow the solution to “The screen is unr eadable or distorted.
This is a normal char act eristic of a hard disk drive and is not a defect. The hard disk drive does not work. Go t o the Startup menu of the BIOS, and then select the Boot menu to make sure that the hard disk drive is on the Boot priority order list.
A sound pr oblem Print these instructions now and keep it with your comput er for refer ence lat er . No sound can be hear d from the speak er even when the volume is turned up. Make sure that: • The mute function is off. • The headphone jack is not used.
