5. Remove any parts and disconnect any cables that might pr event your access t o the memory slots. 6. Do one of the following: • If you are replacing a memory module, open the r etaining clips and r emove the old memory module that is curr ently installed.

1. Remove all media from the drives and turn off all attached devices and the computer . Then, disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets and disconnect all cables that are connect ed to the comput er . 2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 14.

CA UTION: Never remove the cover on a power supply or any part that has the following label attached. Hazardous voltage, current, and energy levels are present inside any component that has this label attached. There ar e no serviceable parts inside these components.

Some power supply assemblies automatically sense the voltage or accept universal input, some power supply assemblies are voltage specic, and some power supply assemblies have a voltage-selection switch.

5. Hold the hard disk drive and r emove the four screws that secur e the har d disk drive. Then, r emove the hard disk drive from the drive bay assembly and disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the rear of the har d disk drive to completely r emove it from the chassis.

8. The fr ont fan assembly is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts. Remove the fr ont fan assembly by cutting the rubber mounts and lifting the front fan assembly out of the chassis. Note: The new fr ont fan assembly will have four new rubber mounts attached.

Chapter 3. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • “Creating and using r ecovery m.
Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e r ecovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. On the Windows Vista oper ating syst ems, you can cr eate r ecovery media using only discs, so this operation is also called “ creating P roduct Recovery discs.
P erforming a backup operation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on different operating systems. • T o perform a backup operation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram on the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1.
• Rescue les from your hard disk drive or fr om a backup The Rescue and Recovery workspace enables you t o locate les on your har d disk drive and tr ansfer them to a network drive or other r ecordable media, such as a USB device or a disc.
1. The recovery oper ations you can perform using a r escue medium vary depending on the oper ating system. 2. The rescue disc can be start ed in all types of optical drives. Creating a rescue medium This section provides instructions on how to creat e a r escue medium on differ ent oper ating systems.
Device drivers for factory-installed devices are locat ed on the computer hard disk drive (usually drive C:) in the SWT OOLSDRIVERS subdirect ory . The lat est device drivers for factory-installed devices are also available at http://ww w .lenovo.com/support.
Chapter 4. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram Y ou can use the Setup Utility progr am to view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , regar dless of which oper ating system you are using. However , the oper ating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword considerations A password can be any combination of up t o 16 (1 to 16) alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security reasons, it is r ecommended to use a str ong password that cannot be easily compr omised. T o set a str ong password, use the following guidelines: Note: The Setup Utility pr ogram passwor ds ar e not case sensitive.
SA T A Controller When this option is set t o Disabled , all devices connect ed to the SA T A connect ors (such as the har d disk drive and the optical drive) are disabled and will not be displayed in the syst em congur ation. USB Setup Use this option to set up USB connect ors.
2. Select Startup ➙ Primary Boot Sequence . Read the information displayed on the right side of the screen. 3. Select the rst boot device, second boot device, and so on. 4. Pr ess Esc t o return t o the Startup menu. Then, select the devices for the Aut omatic Boot Sequence and Error Boot Sequence .
Chapter 5. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POS T and BIOS update failure.

Chapter 6. T roubleshooting and diagnostic programs This chapt er pr ovides information about some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer problem is not described in this chapt er , see Chapter 7 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 63 for additional tr oubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The mouse does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The mouse is correctly connected to an appr opriate mouse connector (the PS/2 mouse connector or one of the USB connectors) on the computer . • The mouse is clean.
Creating a diagnostic disc This section provides instructions on how to cr eate a diagnostic disc. T o creat e a diagnostic disc, do the following: 1. Download a self-starting bootable disc image (known as an ISO image) of the diagnostic pr ogram from: http://www.
