Plugs and outlets If a receptacle (power outlet) that you intend t o use with your computer equipment appears t o be damaged or corr oded, do not use the outlet until it is replaced by a qualied electrician. Do not bend or modify the plug. If the plug is damaged, contact the manufacturer to obtain a replacement.
F or your safety and to maintain optimum comput er performance, always follow these basic precautions with your desktop comput er: • Keep the cover closed whenever the comput er is plugged in. • Regularly inspect the outside of the computer for dust accumulation.

Chapter 1. P roduct overview This chapt er pr ovides information about the computer features, specications, software progr ams pr ovided by L enovo, and locations of connect ors, components, parts on the system board, and internal drives. • Desktop Management Int erface (DMI) Desktop Management Interface provides a common path for users to access information about all aspects of a computer , including processor type, installation date, attached printers and other peripherals, power sour ces, and maintenance history .

Locating connectors on the rear of your comput er Figure 2 “Rear connector locations” on page 9 shows the locations of the connect ors on the r ear of your computer . Some connectors on the rear of your computer are color -coded to help you determine where to connect the cables on your computer .
Connector Description Ethernet connector Used to attach an Ethernet cable for a local ar ea network (LAN). Note: T o oper ate the computer within FCC Class B limits, use a C ategory 5 Ethernet cable. Locating internal drives Internal drives ar e devices that your computer uses to r ead and stor e data. Y ou can add drives to your computer t o incr ease stor age capacity and enable your comput er to r ead other types of media. Internal drives ar e installed in bays.

Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter provides information on using some of the computer components. F requently asked questions The following ar e a few tips that will help you optimize the use of your computer .
Note: Y ou can use the mouse or the Up and Down arrow keys to highlight menu selections. Y ou can close the Start menu or the conte xt menu by clicking the mouse or pressing Esc.
Y ou can switch the function of the primary and secondary mouse buttons and change other default behavior through the mouse properties function in the Windows Control Panel. Adjusting audio Sound is an important part of the computer experience. Y our computer has a digital audio contr oller built into the system board.
Using CDs and DVDs Y our computer might have a DVD ROM drive or r ecordable DVD drive installed. DVD drives use industry-standard, 12 cm (4.75-inch) CD media or DVD media.
1. With the comput er on, press the Eject/Load button. When the tr ay slides out automatically, car efully remove the disc. 2. Close the tr ay by pr essing the Eject/Load button or by gently pushing the tr ay forward.

Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapter provides information about accessibility, comfort, and r elocating your comput er t o other countries or r egions. Accessibility and comfort Good ergonomic pr actice is important to get the most fr om your personal computer and to avoid discomfort.
Adjust the monitor so the top of the scr een is at, or slightly below , eye level. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches), and position it so you can view it without having t o twist your body .
Register your computer with Lenovo T o r egister your comput er , go to http://www.lenovo.com/r egister. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een to complete the r egistration. This can help authorities return your comput er t o you if it is lost or st olen.

Chapter 4. Security This chapt er pr ovides information about how to protect your computer from theft and unauthorized use. Security featur es The following security features ar e available on your co.
Locking the computer cover Locking the computer cover helps pr event unauthorized people from gaining access t o the inside of your computer . Y our computer comes with a padlock loop so that the comput er cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed.
Attaching an integrat ed cable lock An int egrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the K ensington lock, can be used to secure your computer to a desk, table, or other non-permanent xtur e. The cable lock attaches t o the int egrat ed cable lock slot at the rear of your computer and is oper ated with a key .
• Administrat or P assword: Setting an Administr ator P assword det ers unauthorized users from changing conguration settings. If you ar e responsible for maintaining the conguration settings of sever al computers, you might want to set an Administrat or P assword.
• When you clear the Security Chip, be sure to turn your comput er off and then turn it on again aft er you set the Security Chip to Active . Otherwise, the Clear Security Chip option will not be displayed. T o set an it em on the Security Chip submenu: 1.

Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-prot ective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you are ready to install the new part.

7. Pivot the car d latch to the closed position to secur e the PCI card. Figure 13. 5. Remove any parts that might prevent your access to the memory slots. Depending on your computer model, you might need to remove the PCI Express x16 gr aphics car d for easier access to the memory slots. See “Installing or replacing a PCI car d” on page 34.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sure that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns corr ectly with the slot key 2 on the syst em board. Push the memory module str aight down into the slot until the r etaining clips close. Figure 16.
• If you are replacing an optical drive, disconnect the signal cable and the power cable fr om the r ear of the optical drive, pr ess the blue r elease button, and then slide the optical drive out of the front of the comput er . Figure 17. Removing the optical drive 5.
6. Slide the new optical drive into the drive bay from the fr ont of the computer until the optical drive snaps into position. Figure 19. Installing the optical drive 7. Connect the signal cable and the power cable to the new optical drive. Figure 20.

5. Lay the computer on its side and r emove the four screws at the r ear of the chassis that secure the power supply assembly . Figure 30. Removing the screws for the power supply assembly 6. Slide the power supply assembly to the front of the comput er and then lift it out of the chassis.
CA UTION: The heat sink and fan assembly might be very hot. T urn off the computer and wait three to ve minutes to let the computer cool before removing the computer cover . T o r eplace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
Note: P osition the new heat sink and fan assembly so that the heat sink and fan assembly cable is towar d the micropr ocessor fan connect or on the system boar d. 9. F ollow the following sequence t o install the four screws to secure the new heat sink and fan assembly .

b. Note the orientation of the micropr ocessor in the socket. Y ou can either look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micr oprocessor or note the orientation of the notches 2 on the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micropr ocessor on the system boar d.

9. T o install a new har d disk drive into the blue br acket, ex the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the br acket with the corr esponding holes in the har d disk drive. Do not t ouch the cir cuit board 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive.

9. T o install a new har d disk drive into the blue br acket, ex the bracket and align pin 1 , pin 2 , pin 3 , and pin 4 on the br acket with the corr esponding holes in the har d disk drive. Do not t ouch the cir cuit board 5 on the bottom of the hard disk drive.

Replacing the front fan assembly Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before reading and understanding the “Important safety information” in the ThinkCentre Safety and W arranty Guide that came with your computer .
6. Insert the two tabs 2 of the new fr ont fan assembly into the corresponding holes in the chassis, and press the other two tabs 1 thr ough the holes until the fr ont fan assembly is secur ed in place. Figure 42. Installing the fr ont fan assembly 7.
3. Locat e the rear fan assembly . See “L ocating components” on page 11. 4. Disconnect the rear fan assembly cable fr om the system fan connect or on the syst em boar d. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 12. 5. The rear fan assembly is attached to the chassis by four rubber mounts.
7. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan assembly is secur ed in place. Figure 44. Installing the rear fan assembly 8. 5. Disconnect the front audio and USB assembly cables from the syst em board. See “Locating parts on the syst em board” on page 12. Note: Make sur e you note the locations of the cables when you disconnect the cables from the system board.
This section pr ovides instructions on how t o replace the internal speaker . Note: The internal speaker is only available on some models. T o r eplace the internal speaker , do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets.
6. P osition the new int ernal speaker into the four metal clips 1 and push downward on the int ernal speaker until it is secured in place. Figure 47. Installing a new internal speaker 7. 4. Connect a new keyboar d or mouse to one of the USB connect ors on the computer . Depending on wher e you want t o connect the new keyboard or mouse, see “L ocating connectors, controls, and indicators on the front of your comput er ” on page 8 or “Locating connect ors on the r ear of your computer” on page 9.

Chapter 6. Recovery information This chapter provides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by L enovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • Creating and using recovery media.
Note: On the Windows 7 operating system, you can cr eate recovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices. On the Windows Vista operating systems, you can create r ecovery media using only discs, so this oper ation is also called “ creating P roduct Recovery discs.
• T o perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am on the Windows 7 operating system, do the following: 1. F r om the Windows desktop, click Start ➙ All Progr ams ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restore .
• Restor e your hard disk drive fr om a Rescue and Recovery backup: If you have backed up your har d disk drive using the Rescue and Recovery progr am, you can r estore the har d disk drive fr om a Rescue and Recovery backup, even if you cannot start the Windows oper ating system.
3. Click the Creat e Rescue Media icon. The Create Rescue and Recovery Media window opens. 4. In the Rescue Media area, select the type of the r escue medium you want t o cr eate. Y ou can creat e a r escue medium using a disc, a USB har d disk drive, or a secondary int ernal har d disk drive.
6. In the application subfolder , look for a SETUP .EXE le or other appropriat e EXE les for setup. Double-click the le and follow the instructions on the screen to complete the installation. Reinstalling pr einstalled device drivers This section pr ovides instructions on how to reinstall preinstalled device drivers.
5. Open the appr opriate application subfolder . 6. In the application subfolder , look for a SETUP .EXE le or other appr opriate EXE les for setup.

Chapter 7. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram The Setup Utility pr ogram is used to view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , regar dless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
P assword consider ations A passwor d can be any combination of up to 64 alphabetic and numeric char acters. F or security r easons, it is r ecommended to use a strong password that cannot be easily compromised.

Erasing lost or for gotten passwords (clearing CMOS) This section pr ovides instructions on how to erase lost or forgotten passwor ds, such as a user passwor d.
Selecting a startup device If your computer does not start up from a device such as the disc or har d disk drive as e xpected, do one of the following t o select the startup device you want. Selecting a tempor ary startup device Use this procedur e t o select a t emporary startup device.
• Pr essing the power switch • Enabling the wake up on alarm feature The wake up on alarm feature enables your computer t o wak e up at a set time.

Chapter 8. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter provides information about updating the POS T and BIOS, and how to recover fr om a POS T and BIOS updat e failure. Using system pr ograms System pr ograms are the basic layer of software built into your computer .

Chapter 9. P reventing pr oblems This chapter pr ovides information that can help you avoid common pr oblems and keep your computer running smoothly . K eeping your computer current In some situations you may nd it necessary to have the most curr ent softwar e progr ams, device drivers, or operating system.
can contain applications, device drivers, BIOS ashes, or softwar e updat es. When the Syst em Update progr am connects to the Lenovo Support W eb site, the System Update progr am automatically reco.
• Do not get the power switches or other controls wet. Moistur e can damage these parts and cause an electrical hazard. • Always disconnect a power cord by grasping the plug, but not the cord. Cleaning your computer It is a good pr actice to clean your computer periodically to protect the surfaces and ensure tr ouble-free operation.
Cleaning a at-panel monitor surface If you have a at-panel computer display that has a e xible lm surface, do the following t o clean the special surface. Wipe it gently with a soft, dry cloth, or blow on the scr een t o r emove grit and other loose particles.
3. T urn off the computer and all attached devices. Y our hard disk drive aut omatically parks the r ead/write head in a nondata area. This pr events damage to the har d disk drive.

Chapter 10. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic tr oubleshooting and diagnostic progr ams. If your computer pr oblem is not described here, see Chapter 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 109 for additional troubleshooting resour ces.
Symptom Action The operating system does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system resides. Usually, the oper ating system is on the har d disk drive. F or more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 78 .
8. If none of these actions solve the problem, seek t echnical assistance. See Chapter 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 109 for mor e information. T roubleshooting Use the troubleshooting information to nd solutions to problems that have denite symptoms.
• Double-click the speaker icon in the Windows notication ar ea. A master volume-control window opens. V erify that the Mute settings are not checked and none of the volume settings is set too low. • Some models have a front audio panel you can use to adjust volume.
CD pr oblems Select your symptom fr om the following list: • “ An audio disc or AutoPlay-enabled disc does not aut omatically play when it is insert ed into a CD drive” on page 93 • “ A CD o.
• “Black screen inst ead of DVD video” on page 94 • “DVD movie will not play” on page 94 • “No audio or intermitt ent audio while playing DVD movie” on page 94 • “Playback is ver.
• Ensure that video r esolution is set to less than 1152 x 864. If these actions do not correct the pr oblem, run the diagnostic pr ograms (see “Diagnostic progr ams” on page 107 for instructions). If you need technical assistance, see Chapter 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 109.
• If you are using an Enhanced P erformance USB keyboard and one or more of the Rapid Access butt ons are the only keys that are not working, these buttons might have been disabled or have not been assigned to a function.
• Scraping the surface of the r eader with your nail or anything har d. • Using or t ouching the reader with a dirty nger . • The surface of your nger is very differ ent fr om when you enrolled your ngerprint. The wir eless k eyboard does not work Symptom: The wir eless k eyboard does not work.
The monit or works when you turn on the computer , but goes blank when you start some application progr ams Symptom: The monitor works when you turn on the computer , but goes blank when you start some application pr ograms.
3. T urn on the monit or . If these actions do not correct the problem, your monitor might need service. See Chapt er 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 109 for details. Networking problems The following ar e the most common networking problems.
If you congured the adapt er for full duple x, make sure the switch port is also congur ed for full duple x. Setting the wr ong duple x mode can degr ade performance, cause data loss, or r esult in lost connections. • Y ou have installed all networking softwar e that is necessary for your network envir onment.
Note: If your computer is preinstalled with the Windows 7 oper ating system, click Show hidden icons in the Windows notication area. The Access Connections icon is displayed. F or more information about the icon, see the Help in Access Connections.
An option that was just installed does not work Symptom: An option that was just installed does not work. Action: V erify that: • The option is designed for your computer .
T o check the amount of fr ee space on the Windows Vista oper ating syst em and the Windows 7 oper ating system, do the following: 1. Click Start ➙ Computer . 2. Right-click your C drive entry and then click Properties . The amount of fr ee disk space is displayed.
– 1. Click Start ➙ Computer . 2. Right-click your C drive entry and then click Pr operties . 3. Click Disk Cleanup . 4. Click Clean up system les . 5. Click the More Options tab. 6. In the P rograms and F eatur es area, click the Clean up button.
Print er problems Symptom: The printer does not work. Actions: V erify that: 1. The print er is turned on and is online. 2. P aper is loaded correctly . 3. The print er signal cable is securely connect ed to the correct parallel, serial, or USB connector on the computer .
Check with your software manufacturer to see if any updates ar e available. Many software manufacturers make updates available from the W orld Wide W eb. Software does not work as e xpected Symptom: Software does not work as e xpected. Actions: • Most softwar e progr ams have built-in help systems that provide instructions for most tasks.
• Reset the device by detaching and reattaching the USB connector . If these actions do not correct the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams to test the USB connect or (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 107 for instructions). If the USB device came with its own diagnostics, run those diagnostics against the USB device.
