Read this rst Be sur e to follow the important tips given her e to continue to get the most use and enjoyment out of your computer . F ailur e to do so might lead to discomfort or injury, or cause your computer to fail. Protect yourself from the heat that your computer generates.
Protect your computer and data when moving it. Before moving a comput er equipped with a hard disk drive, do one of the following, and make sure that the power switch is off or is blinking: • T urn it off. • P ress Fn+F4 t o put it in sleep (standby) mode • P ress Fn+F12 t o put it in hibernation mode.
Conditions that requir e immediate action Products can become damaged due to misuse or neglect. Some pr oduct damage is serious enough that the pr oduct should not be used again until it has been inspected and, if necessary, repaired by an authoriz ed servicer .

Never overload these devices. If power strips are used, the load should not e xceed the power strip input rating.
External devices CA UTION: Do not connect or disconnect any external device cables other than Universal Serial Bus (USB) and 1394 cables while the computer power is on; otherwise, you might damage your comput er .

When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations. The battery pack should be stored at room temperature, charged to approximat ely 30 to 50% of capacity .

When your computer connects to a LAN and a session with the network is available, the lower right indicator is solid gr een. While data is being tr ansmitted, the lower left indicator blinks yellow.

Chapter 2. Using your computer Y our computer is powerful and is loaded with featur es and applications. Use it to accomplish anything, any day, any time.
• T o conserve power , or t o suspend oper ation without e xiting applications or saving les, see “P ower-saving modes” on page 39. • T o achieve the best balance between performance and power saving, cr eate and apply power plans (in Windows XP , power schemes) by use of P ower Manager .
• Also recovery tool is pr ovided on your computer hard disk or solid stat e drive. F or mor e information, see Chapter 5 “Recovery overview” on page 103. Print the following sections and keep them with your computer in case you are unable to access this online help when necessar y .
If the numeric keypad is enabled, pr ess and hold Shift to use the cursor - and screen-contr ol keys tempor arily . Note: The functions of the cursor- and scr een-control keys are not printed on the keys. F unction k ey combinations By setting the function keys, you can change operational features instantly .
P ower conservation • Fn+F3 Select a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) that has been created by P ower Manager, or adjust the power level by using the slider contr ol. When you pr ess this combination of butt ons, a panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) or adjusting the power level appears.
Apply a pr esentation scheme dir ectly, with no need t o start Pr esentation Direct or . T o disable this function and use the Fn+F7 key combination for switching a display output location, start Pr esentation Dir ector , and change the settings. Launching the camer a and audio settings • Fn+F6 If you press Fn+F6, the camer a and audio settings window is opened and the camer a pr eview is turned on. F rom this window , you can change the camer a and audio settings. Note: The Camera settings ar ea only appears if your computer has an integr ated camer a.
V olume and mute buttons Y ou can adjust the sound level of the built-in speakers by using the following thr ee buttons: 1 Speaker mute button 2 V olume control button 3 Microphone mute If you mute the sound and then turn off your comput er , the sound will r emain muted when you turn on your computer again.

2 Application k ey T o display the shortcut menu for an object, select the object on the desktop or within an application and then pr ess this key . Using the UltraNav pointing device Y our comput er may come with the UltraNav pointing device.
If you ar e not familiar with the T r ackP oint, these instructions will help you get started: 1. Place your hands in the typing position, and pr ess gently with either index nger on the pointing stick in the direction in which you want the point er t o move.
Note: If you r eplace the keyboard, a new keyboard is shipped with the default cap. If you wish, you can keep the cap from your old keyboar d and use it on the new one. Using the touch pad The t ouch pad consists of a pad (1) and two click buttons below the T r ackP oint buttons at the bottom of the keyboard.
2. Click Manage Settings to open the Mouse pr operties window. 3. Click the Ultr aNav tab and proceed t o customizing the touch pad. F or details, refer to the Help in the Utility . Behavior of the Ultr aNav and an ext ernal mouse By default, the T rackP oint and the t ouch pad ar e set to Enabled .
5. Click OK or Apply . 6. If your computer is a Windows 7 model, click Show hidden icons in the task bar . The Ultr aNav icon is displayed. T o add it to the task bar permanently, click Customize and pr oceed to cust omize the settings. Y ou can now change the properties of Ultr aNav by clicking the UltraNav icon on the syst em tray .

Introducing the power -saving modes • Screen blank. The computer display r equires considerable battery power . T o turn off power t o the display, do as follows: 1. P ress Fn+F3. A panel for selecting a power plan (in Windows XP , power scheme) appears.
Enabling the battery alarm Y ou can pr ogram your comput er so that when the battery power falls below a certain level, thr ee events occur: the alarm goes off, a message is displayed, and the L CD is turned off. Do as follows: 1. Start P ower Manager .
DANGER Only recharge the battery pack strictly accor ding to instructions included in the product documentation. DANGER Do not put the batt er y pack in trash that is disposed of in landlls. When disposing of the battery, comply with local ordinances or regulations and your company's safety standar ds.
Wireless connections Wireless connection is the tr ansfer of data without the use of cables by means of r adio waves only . Depending on the frequency used for data tr ansmission, the area covered, or.
Note: Befor e you start setting up wireless networking connections by using Access Connections, obtain a Network Name (SSID) and your encryption information fr om your network administrat or . Access Connections, a connectivity assistant progr am, can easily enable one network adapt er and disable the other adapters on demand.
F or Windows XP If your computer is equipped with the Int egrated Bluetooth features, you can enable or disable the features by pr essing Fn+F5. If you press Fn+F5, a list of wir eless features is displayed. Y ou can enable or disable the Bluetooth featur es with a single click.
2. F or Windows XP , go to Bluet ooth T asks and double-click View devices in range . A list of the devices on which Bluet ooth has been enabled appears.
Installing the Microsoft Bluetooth software in Windows XP If you want to use the Micr osoft Bluetooth software, do as follows: First uninstall the ThinkP ad Bluetooth with Enhanced Data Rate Softwar e. 1. T urn Bluetooth power off. 2. Click Start ➙ Control P anel .
4. Double-click Bluetooth Radios to e xtract the Bluetooth Radios device tree. 5. Double-click the ThinkP ad Bluet ooth with Enhanced Data Rate icon t o open the Pr operties window. 6. Click the Driver tab; then click Update Driver . 7. Click No, not this time , and then click Next .

Using dialup connection If you sometimes have to dial in t o one or more networks from r emote sites, such as hotels or ofces, you will need t o start by setting up in your comput er a pr ole for each site you dial from and a pr ole for each network you dial in to.
Y our built-in modem is a worldwide modem and can be used in any region wher e P ostal T elegraph and T elephone (PTT) type appr oval has been obtained.
4. Click Advanced settings , select the On Screen Display tab, and then click Num L ock Settings . 5. The setting window opens. 6. F ollow the instructions on the scr een. F or Windows Vista: 1. Right-click on the desktop, and click P ersonalize . 2. Click Display Settings .

Click Advanced Settings , select the Monitor tab, then set Colors F or Windows Vista: 1. Connect the e xternal monitor to the monit or connector; then connect the monitor t o an electrical outlet.
NVIDIA Optimus Gr aphics enables a dynamic switch, that is, a switch with no need to r estar t your computer between High P erformance and Ener gy Saving Gr aphics. Note: T o use the DisplayP ort feature or DVI monitor on the docking station, you need t o switch to High P erformance Gr aphics.
Beam F orming feature A built-in dual arr ay digital microphone is mounted at the t op of the display . Whereas a conventional single-element microphone captures sounds fr om all around, the built-in .

• Select corr esponding item to eject the car d from the Windows oper ating system. • Pr ess the car d t o eject it from your computer . • Remove the car d from your computer and store it safely for future use.

Creating recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how to creat e recovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system. Note: On the Windows 7 oper ating system, you can creat e recovery media using discs or e xternal USB stor age devices.

Chapter 6. Replacing devices Y ou can incr ease the capacity of the memory or the har d disk drive by r eplacing the original, built-in device with an optional one. T o replace the batt ery with a new one, r ead the following pr erequisites, and select your model fr om the list below for the instruction. Prer equisites for the procedur e DANGER If the rechargeable battery pack is incorrectly replaced, there is danger of an explosion.

Replacing memory in the slot on the underside of the computer Y our computer has two memory slots: one under the keyboar d and another on the underside of the computer . T o r eplace the SO-DIMM, follow the procedur e below: 1. T urn off the computer; then disconnect the ac power adapt er and all cables from the comput er .
6. With the notched end of the SO-DIMM toward the contact edge side of the socket, insert the SO-DIMM into the socket at an angle of about 20 degr ees (1); then pr ess it in rmly (2). 7. Pivot the SO-DIMM downward until it snaps into place. 8. Make sur e that the SO-DIMM is rmly xed in the slot and cannot be moved easily .

When Wake on LAN is used with network management softwar e, many functions, such as data tr ansfer , software updates, and Flash updates of UEFI BIOS, can be performed r emotely without r emote att endance. This updating can be done aft er normal working hours and on weekends, to save time and increase productivity .
If an administr ator's password (supervisor passwor d) has been set, you will need t o specify it when you start the ThinkPad Setup, so that you can use these functions.
Chapter 9. P reventing pr oblems An important part of owning a ThinkPad notebook is maint enance. With proper care, you can avoid common problems. The following sections pr ovide information that can help you t o keep your computer running smoothly .
