Chapter 2. Arr anging your workspace T o get the most fr om your computer , arr ange both the equipment you use and your work ar ea to suit your needs and the kind of work you do.
Air circulation Y our computer and monitor produce heat. The comput er has a fan that pulls in fr esh air and for ces out hot air . The monitor lets hot air escape through vents. Blocking the air vents can cause overheating, which might result in a malfunction or damage.
Chapter 3. Setting up your computer Be sur e to read and understand the ThinkStation Safety and W arranty Guide before you set up your computer . Reading and understanding the safety information r educes the risk of personal injury and or damage to your product.
Note: Depending on your model type, your computer might come with a L ow F orce Helix (LFH) connector on the rear panel, which enables you to connect up to four monitors. The standard LFH connector has two br eakout Video Gr aphics Arr ay (VGA) cables or Digital Video Interface (DVI) cables.
1 Audio line-in connector Used t o r eceive audio signals fr om an e xternal audio device, such as a ster eo syst em. When you attach an e xternal audio device t o your computer , connect the cable to the audio line-out connector of the device and the audio line-in connect or of the computer .

Updating your antivirus software Y our computer comes with antivirus software that you can use t o det ect and eliminat e viruses. Lenovo provides a full version of antivirus softwar e on your har d disk drive with a free 30-day subscription. After 30 days, you must r enew the license t o continue r eceiving the antivirus pr ogr am updates.

Chapter 4. Software overview The ThinkStation computer comes with a pr einstalled oper ating syst em and sever al pr eloaded applications. The applications can be specied by the cust omer . Chapter 5. Using the Setup Utility The Setup Utility pr ogr am is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your comput er , r egardless of which oper ating syst em you are using. However , the oper ating-system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.

Installing hard disk drives and conguring RAID This chapter contains information about installing hard disk drives and conguring Redundant Array of Independent Disks (RAID) for this pr oduct. Chapter 8. T roubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your comput er problem is not described here, see Chapter 10 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 39 for additional troubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The USB Keyboard does not work. V erify that: • The computer is turned on. • The keyboard is secur ely connect ed t o a USB connect or on the fr ont or r ear of the computer . • No keys ar e stuck. If you cannot corr ect the problem, have the computer serviced.
2. If you are unable to isolate and r epair the pr oblem yourself after running the diagnostic progr ams, save and print the log les creat ed by the diagnostic progr ams. Y ou will need the log les when you speak t o a L enovo t echnical support repr esentative.
3. F rom the Rescue and Recovery workspace, select Launch advanced Rescue and Recovery ➙ Diagnose hardwar e . The PC-Doctor for Rescue and Recovery diagnostic pr ogram opens. 4. Select the diagnostic t est you want t o run. Then, follow the instructions on the screen.
T o clean an optical mouse, do the following: 1. T urn off your computer . 2. Disconnect the mouse cable from the computer . 3. T urn the mouse upside down t o check the lens. a. If there is a smudge on the lens, gently clean the area with a plain cotton-tipped swab.

Chapter 9. Recovery information This chapter will help you get familiar with r ecovery solutions provided by L enovo. This chapter e xplains when and how to use the following recovery methods: • Cre.
• T o use recovery media on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, do the following: Attention: When you use r ecovery media to r estore the computer to the factory default settings on Windows 7 or Windows Vista, all the les currently on the system drive or the har d disk drive will be deleted and r eplaced by the factory default settings.
• T o perform a backup oper ation using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogr am on Windows 7, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click S tart ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e . The Rescue and Recovery pr ogram opens.
• Restore your har d disk drive fr om a Rescue and Recovery backup If you have backed up your har d disk drive using the Rescue and Recovery pr ogram, you can r estor e the hard disk drive from a Rescue and Recovery backup, even if you cannot start the Windows operating syst em.
Creating rescue media This section provides instructions on how t o creat e r escue media on differ ent oper ating systems. • T o creat e a r escue medium on Windows 7, do the following: 1. F rom the Windows desktop, click S tart ➙ All Pr ograms ➙ L enovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ Enhanced Backup and Restor e .
