ThinkV antage System Update The ThinkV antage Syst em Updat e progr am helps you keep the softwar e on your computer up-t o-date by downloading and installing softwar e packages (ThinkV antage applications, device drivers, BIOS updates, and other thir d party applications).
Locating connectors, contr ols, and indicators on the front of your computer Figure 1 “F r ont connect or , control, and indicator locations” on page 8 shows the locations of the connect ors, controls, and indicat ors on the front of your computer .

Connector Description Audio line-in connector Used t o receive audio signals from an e xternal audio device, such as a ster eo system. When you attach an external audio device, a cable is connected between the audio line-out connector of the device and the audio line-in connect or of the computer .
Locating components Figure 3 “Component locations” on page 11 shows the locations of the various components in your computer . T o r emove the comput er cover , see “Removing the computer cover” on page 30.
Locating parts on the syst em board Figure 4 “System board part locations” on page 12 shows the locations of the parts on the system boar d. Figure 4.
Locating internal drives Internal drives are devices that your comput er uses t o r ead and stor e data. Y ou can add drives to your computer to incr ease st orage capacity and enable your computer to r ead other types of media. Int ernal drives ar e installed in bays.
Machine type and model label The machine type and model label identies your comput er . When you contact L enovo for help, the machine type and model information helps support technicians to identify your computer and provide fast er service. The following is a sample of the machine type and model label.
Chapter 2. Using your computer This chapter pr ovides information on using some of the comput er components. F requently ask ed questions The following ar e a few tips that will help you optimiz e the use of your comput er .
Note: Y ou can use the mouse or the Up and Down arr ow keys t o highlight menu selections. Y ou can close the Start menu or the conte xt menu by clicking the mouse or pressing Esc. Using a ngerprint r eader Some computers might come with a keyboar d that has a ngerprint reader .
Optionally, you can connect a set of powered st ereo speakers t o the audio line-out connector to enjoy better sound with multimedia applications. Setting the volume from the deskt op The desktop volume contr ol is accessible through the volume icon in the taskbar , which is locat ed at the bottom-right corner of the Windows deskt op.
• Hold the disc by its edges. Do not t ouch the surface of the side that is not labeled. • T o r emove dust or ngerprints, wipe the disc with a clean, soft cloth fr om the center to the outside. Wiping the disc in a circular direction might cause loss of data.
Chapter 3. Y ou and your comput er This chapt er pr ovides information about accessibility, comfort, and r elocating your computer to other countries or regions. Accessibility and comfort Good ergonomic pr actice is important t o get the most fr om your personal comput er and t o avoid discomfort.
Adjust the monitor so the top of the screen is at, or slightly below, eye level. Place the monitor at a comfortable viewing distance, usually 51 to 61 cm (20 to 24 inches), and position it so you can view it without having to twist your body . Also, position other equipment you use regularly, such as the telephone or a mouse, within easy r each.
Register your comput er with L enovo T o regist er your computer , go to http://www.lenovo.com/regist er. Then, follow the instructions on the screen to complete the registr ation. This can help authorities return your computer to you if it is lost or stolen.

Chapter 4. Security This chapt er provides information about how to prot ect your computer from theft and unauthoriz ed use. Security featur es The following security featur es ar e available on your .
Locking the comput er cover Locking the comput er cover helps prevent unauthoriz ed people from gaining access to the inside of your computer . Y our computer comes with a padlock loop so that the computer cover cannot be removed when a padlock is installed.
Attaching an integr ated cable lock An int egrated cable lock, sometimes referr ed to as the Kensington lock, can be used to secure your computer t o a desk, table, or other non-permanent xture. The cable lock attaches to the integr ated cable lock slot at the r ear of your comput er and is oper ated with a key .
• Administrat or Passwor d: Setting an Administr ator P assword deters unauthoriz ed users from changing conguration settings. If you are r esponsible for maintaining the congur ation settings of several computers, you might want t o set an Administr ator P assword.

Chapter 5. Installing or r eplacing har dware This chapter provides instructions on how to install or r eplace hardwar e for your computer . Handling static-sensitive devices Do not open the static-prot ective package containing the new part until the defective part has been removed from the computer and you ar e ready t o install the new part.

This section pr ovides instructions on how t o install or replace a PCI car d. Y our computer has one standar d PCI car d slot, two PCI Expr ess x1 car d slots, and one PCI Expr ess x16 gr aphics card slot. T o install or replace a PCI car d, do the following: 1.

7. Pivot the card latch to the closed position to secur e the PCI car d. Figure 13. 5. Remove any parts that might pr event your access to the memory slots. Depending on your computer model, you might need to remove the PCI Expr ess x16 gr aphics car d for easier access to the memory slots. See “Installing or replacing a PCI card” on page 31.
7. P osition the new memory module over the memory slot. Make sur e that the notch 1 on the memory module aligns correctly with the slot key 2 on the syst em boar d. Push the memory module str aight down int o the slot until the retaining clips close.
• If you ar e replacing an optical drive, disconnect the signal cable and the power cable from the r ear of the optical drive, pr ess the blue release button, and then slide the optical drive out of the front of the computer . Figure 17. Removing the optical drive 5.

The battery normally r equires no charging or maintenance throughout its life; however , no battery lasts forever . If the batt ery fails, the date, time, and congur ation information (including passwor ds) are lost. An error message is displayed when you turn on the comput er .
Replacing the power supply assembly Attention: Do not open your computer or attempt any r epair before reading and understanding the “Important safety information” on page v . This section pr ovides instructions on how to r eplace the power supply assembly .
5. Lay the comput er on its side and remove the four screws at the r ear of the chassis that secure the power supply assembly . Figure 30. Removing the screws for the power supply assembly 6. Slide the power supply assembly t o the fr ont of the computer and then lift it out of the chassis.
T o replace the heat sink and fan assembly, do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets. 2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 30. 3. Lay the computer on its side for easier access to the system boar d.
9. P osition the new heat sink and fan assembly on the micr oprocessor socket and then position the clamp on the plastic r etention br acket. Pivot the handle 1 to clamp the heat sink and fan assembly to the plastic r etention br acket. Figure 32. Reinstalling the heat sink and fan assembly 10.
4. Locat e the syst em boar d and disconnect all cables connected to the system boar d. See “L ocating parts on the system board” on page 12. 5. Remove the heat sink and fan assembly . See “Replacing the heat sink and fan assembly” on page 45.
b. Note the orientation of the micropr ocessor in the socket. Y ou can look for the small triangle 1 on one corner of the micropr ocessor . This is important when installing the new micropr ocessor on the system board. c. T ouch only the edges of the micropr ocessor .
5. Pr ess the blue r elease tab 1 down, slide the har d disk drive cage 2 to the rear of the computer , and then pivot it outwar d. Figure 35. Removing the primary hard disk drive 6. Remove the hard disk drive cage from the chassis by sliding it outwar d.
12. Connect the signal cable and the power cable t o the new hard disk drive. 13. Pr ess down on the metal latch 2 and pivot the drive cage into place, and then slide it to the fr ont of the computer until it snaps into position. Note: There ar e two arr ows, one on the upper drive cage and one on the har d disk drive cage.
5. Pr ess the blue r elease button t o release the hard disk drive cage fr om the chassis. Figure 38. Removing the secondary hard disk drive 6. Remove the har d disk drive cage fr om the chassis by simply sliding it outwar d. 7. Pull on the blue handle to r elease and r emove the har d disk drive fr om the har d disk drive cage.
11. Install the hard disk drive cage int o the chassis until it snaps int o position underneath the metal tab. Make sur e that the hard disk drive cage r elease button is secur ed in the chassis. Figure 40. Installing the secondary hard disk drive 12.
5. Release the two tabs 1 that attach the fr ont fan assembly to the chassis as shown and then complet ely remove the fr ont fan assembly from the chassis.
6. Insert the two tabs 2 of the new front fan assembly into the corr esponding holes in the chassis, and press the other two tabs 1 thr ough the holes until the fr ont fan assembly is secured in place. Figure 42. Installing the front fan assembly 7. Connect the fr ont fan assembly cable to the power fan connector on the syst em board.
4. Disconnect the r ear fan cable from the system fan connect or on the system board. See “Locating parts on the system board” on page 12. 5. The rear fan is attached t o the chassis by four rubber mounts. Remove the rear fan by breaking or cutting the rubber mounts and gently pulling the r ear fan out of the chassis.
7. Pull on the tips of the rubber mounts until the r ear fan is secured in place. Figure 44. Installing the rear fan 8. Connect the r ear fan cable to the syst em fan connector on the syst em board. What to do ne xt: • T o work with another piece of hardwar e, go to the appropriat e section.
Note: Make sur e you note the locations of the cables when you disconnect the cables fr om the system board. 6. Remove the screw that secures the fr ont audio and USB assembly brack et t o the chassis to remove the br acket from the chassis. Figure 45.
T o replace the int ernal speaker , do the following: 1. T urn off the comput er and disconnect all power cor ds from electrical outlets. 2. Remove the comput er cover . See “Removing the computer cover” on page 30. 3. Locat e the int ernal speaker connect or on the system boar d.
6. P osition the new internal speaker into the four metal clips 1 and push the int ernal speaker downwar d until it is secur ed in place. Figure 47. Installing a new internal speaker 7. Connect the internal speaker cable to the system boar d. See “Locating parts on the system boar d” on page 12.
2. Connect a new keyboar d or mouse to one of the USB connect ors on the computer . Depending on where you want to connect the new keyboar d or mouse, see “L ocating connectors, contr ols, and indicators on the front of your computer” on page 8 or “L ocating connect ors on the r ear of your comput er ” on page 9.
4. P osition the computer cover on the chassis so that the rail guides on the bottom of the comput er cover engage the r ails on the chassis. Then, push the cover to the fr ont of the computer until it snaps into position. Figure 49. Reinstalling the computer cover 5.
Chapter 6. Recovery information This chapter pr ovides information about the r ecovery solutions provided by Lenovo. This chapt er contains the following t opics: • Creating and using r ecovery medi.
T o creat e r ecovery media on the Windows 7 oper ating system, click Start ➙ All P rograms ➙ Lenovo ThinkV antage T ools ➙ F actory Recovery Disks . Then, follow the instructions on the screen. Using recovery media This section pr ovides instructions on how t o use r ecovery media.
3. Click Back up your hard drive and select backup oper ation options. Then, follow the instructions on the scr een t o complete the backup oper ation. P erforming a recovery oper ation This section pr ovides instructions on how to perform a r ecovery operation using the Rescue and Recovery progr am.
Note: If the Rescue and Recovery workspace fails to open, see “Solving recovery problems” on page 68. 4. Do one of the following: • T o rescue les fr om your hard disk drive, click Rescue les and follow the instructions on the screen.
3. In the Please select boot device window, select the USB har d disk drive as the rst boot device and press Enter . The rescue medium starts. When the r escue medium starts, the Rescue and Recovery workspace opens. The help information for each feature is available fr om the Rescue and Recovery workspace.
Reinstalling software progr ams If a software pr ogram you installed on your computer is not working correctly, you might need t o remove and r einstall it. Reinstalling overwrites the e xisting pr ograms les and usually xes any pr oblems that you might have had with that pr ogram.
It is important t o creat e a rescue medium and a set of r ecovery media as early as possible and st ore them in a safe place for futur e use. Chapter 6 .

Chapter 7. Using the Setup Utility pr ogram The Setup Utility pr ogram is used t o view and change the congur ation settings of your computer , r egardless of which oper ating system you ar e using. However , the operating system settings might override any similar settings in the Setup Utility progr am.
• Administrat or P assword • Hard Disk P asswor d Y ou do not have to set any passwords to use your computer . However , using passwords impr oves computing security . If you decide to set any passwords, r ead the following sections. P assword considerations A passwor d can be any combination of up t o 64 alphabetic and numeric char acters.
2. F r om the Setup Utility progr am main menu, select Security . 3. Depending on the password type, select Set P ower-On P assword , Set Administr ator P assword , or Hard Disk P assword . 4. F ollow the instructions on the right side of the scr een to set, change, or delet e a passwor d.
Selecting a startup device If your computer does not start up fr om a device such as the disc or hard disk drive as e xpected, do one of the following to select the startup device you want. Selecting a tempor ary startup device Use this pr ocedure to select a t emporary startup device.
1. Start the Setup Utility pr ogram. 2. F r om the Setup Utility progr am main menu, select P ower ➙ Automatic P ower On , and pr ess Enter . 3. Select W ake Up on Alarm and pr ess Enter . Then follow the instructions on the scr een. 4. Pr ess F10 to save changes and e xit the Setup Utility pr ogram.

Chapter 8. Updating syst em progr ams This chapter pr ovides information about updating the POST and BIOS, and how to r ecover fr om a POST and BIOS update failure. Using system programs System pr ograms ar e the basic layer of softwar e built int o your comput er .
Updating (ashing) the BIOS from your oper ating system Note: Because L enovo makes constant improvements to its W eb sites, the W eb page contents are subject to change without notice, including the contents r eferenced in the following pr ocedure.
Chapter 9. P reventing pr oblems This chapter provides information that can help you avoid common pr oblems and keep your computer running smoothly . K eeping your computer current In some situations you may nd it necessary to have the most curr ent softwar e progr ams, device drivers, or operating system.
Using System Updat e The System Update progr am helps you keep the softwar e on your comput er up-to-dat e. Update packages are stor ed on Lenovo servers and can be downloaded fr om the Lenovo Support Web site. Update packages can contain applications, device drivers, BIOS ashes, or softwar e updates.
Cleaning your computer It is a good pr actice to clean your computer periodically to pr otect the surfaces and ensur e tr ouble-free operation. CA UTION: Be sure to turn off the computer and monit or power switches before cleaning the computer and monitor screen.
Many computer supply st ores carry the special cleaning uids for displays. Use cleaning uids developed for L CD displays only . First apply the uid t o a lint-fr ee, soft cloth, then clean the L CD display . Some comput er supply stores carry pr e-moistened towelettes for L CD maintenance.
Chapter 10. T r oubleshooting and diagnostics This chapter describes some basic troubleshooting and diagnostic pr ograms. If your comput er pr oblem is not described her e, see Chapt er 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 103 for additional troubleshooting r esources.
Symptom Action The operating syst em does not start. V erify that: • The startup sequence includes the device where the operating system r esides. Usually, the operating system is on the har d disk drive. F or more information, see “Selecting a startup device” on page 74 .
Select the problem your comput er is e xperiencing from the following list: • “ Audio problems” on page 85 • “CD problems” on page 86 • “DVD problems” on page 87 • “Intermittent .
• V erify that the audio device drivers ar e correctly installed. See Micr osoft Windows help syst em for mor e information. If these actions do not corr ect the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 99 for instructions).
Actions: • If you have multiple CD or DVD drives installed (or a combination of CD and DVD drives), try inserting the disc int o the other drive. In some cases, only one of the drives is connect ed to the audio subsyst em. • If you are using the Windows 7 oper ating system, follow the action for “ A CD or DVD does not work” on page 87 .
• T ry a lower scr een r esolution or color depth. If these actions do not corr ect the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 99 for instructions). If you need t echnical assistance, see Chapt er 11 “Getting information, help, and service” on page 103.
• On comput ers that have a CD-ROM or CD-RW drive in addition to a DVD-ROM drive, make sure that the DVD disc is in the drive labeled “DVD”. If these actions do not corr ect the problem, run the diagnostic progr ams (see “Diagnostic pr ograms” on page 99 for instructions).
The mouse or pointing device does not work Symptom: The mouse or pointing device does not work. Actions: • V erify that the mouse or pointing-device cable is securely attached to the corr ect connector on the computer . Depending on the type of mouse you have, the mouse cable will connect to either the mouse, serial, or USB connector .
F or information about the status lights and using the contr ols, refer to the documentation that comes with your monitor . Select your symptom from the following list: • “Wr ong char acters appea.
• The monit or might be oper ating in a low-refr esh r ate display mode. Set the monit or to the highest, noninterlaced r efresh r ate supported by your monitor and the video contr oller in your computer . Attention: Using a r esolution or refresh rat e that is not supported by your monit or might damage it.
• “The adapter st ops working for no apparent r eason” on page 93 • “If your computer is a Gigabit E thernet model and you use a speed of 1000 Mbps, the connection fails or err ors occur ” on page 94 • “If your computer is a Gigabit Ethernet model, it cannot connect t o the network at 1000 Mbps.
If your computer is a Gigabit Ethernet model and you use a speed of 1000 Mbps, the connection fails or errors occur Symptom: If your comput er is a Gigabit Ethernet model and you use a speed of 1000 Mbps, the connection fails or errors occur . Actions: • Use Cat egory 5 wiring and make sure that the network cable is securely connected.
Sound does not come from the Bluetooth headphone Symptom: Sound does not come fr om the Bluetooth headset/headphone but comes fr om the local speaker even though the headset/headphone is connected using Headset pr ole or A V pr ole. Action: Do the following: 1.
Actions: • V erify that all option har dware and cable connections are secur e. • If the option comes with its own t est instructions, use those instructions t o test the option. • If the failing option is a SCSI option, verify that: – The cables for all e xternal SCSI options are connected corr ectly .
2. Right-click your C drive entry and then click Pr operties . 3. Click Disk Cleanup . 4. Click Clean up system les . 5. Click the Mor e Options tab. 6. In the Progr ams and F eatur es ar ea, click the Clean up button. 7. A list of installed applications is displayed.
Note: Non-IEEE-appr oved printer signal cables might cause unpr edictable problems. 1. Any device drivers and other softwar e that came with the print er are correctly installed. 2. Y ou have assigned the print er port corr ectly in your oper ating system, application pr ogram, or BIOS settings.

PC-Doctor for DOS Y ou can also download the latest version of the PC-Doctor for DOS diagnostic pr ogram from http://support.lenovo.com. The PC-Doctor for DOS diagnostic progr am runs independently of the Windows operating system.
