2 Introduction 7 Important cautions Installation of the system • Select a plac e which is le vel, dr y and neither too hot nor too cold; between 5°C and 35°C. • Leav e suff icient distance be tween the system and the TV . • Do not use the system in a place su bject to vibration.
3 About discs This system has been designed to play back the following discs: D VD VIDEO, D VD A UDIO, V ideo CD (VCD), Super V ideo CD (SVCD), Audio CD (CD), CD-R and CD-R W . • This system accommodates the P AL system, and also can play discs recorded with NTSC system.
About discs 4 Notes on MP3/WMA/JPEG /MPEG4 discs • MP3/WMA/JPEG /MPEG4 discs (e ither CD-R or CD-R W) require a longer readout time. (It dif fers due to the complexity of the directory/file configuration.) • When making an MP3/WMA/JPEG /MPEG4 disc, select ISO 9660 Lev el 1 or Lev el 2 for the disc format.

Description of parts and controls 6 Powered subwoofer SP-PWS5/SP-PWS51 NOTE • For safety reasons, always ensure that there is sufficient space behind the powered subwoofer. Front Rear POWER ON lamp: pg. 14 pg. 9 P ower cord: pg. 11 pg. 11 Do not block the ventilation openings.
Description of parts and controls 7 Remote control Putting batteries in the remote control If the range or effecti veness of the remote control decreases, replace both batteries. CAUTION • Do not expose batteries to heat or flame. Operating the system from the remote control Aim the remote control directly to the front panel of the center unit.
8 Connections 7 AM (MW) loop antenna Setting up su pplied AM (MW) loop antenn a Connecting AM ( MW) loop antenna • T urn the loop antenna until you ha ve the best reception during AM (MW) broadcast program reception. NOTE • Make sure the antenna conductors do not touch any other terminals, connecting cords and power cords.
Connections 9 Note that the illustration bel ow is for TH-S5. CAUTION • When you connect speakers other than the supplied ones, use speakers of the same speaker impedance (SPEAKER IMPED ANCE) indicated near the speaker terminals on the rear of the po wered subwoofer .
Connections 10 NOTE • Although the satellite speakers and the powered subwoofer are magnetically shielded, the TV screen may appear mottled. In this case, keep enough distanc e between the speakers and the TV. • The speakers are m agnetically shielded to avoid color distortions on TVs.
Connections 11 Y ou can enjoy the sound of an analog component. NOTE • If you connect a sound-enhancing de vice such as a graphic equalizer between the source components and this system, the sound output through this system may be distorted.
12 Operating external components with the remote control NOTE • Manufacturers’ codes are subject to change without notice. • Set the codes again after replacing the batteries of the remote control. 7 To set the manufact urer’s code Y ou can operate a JVC TV without setting the manufacturer’ s code.

K eep the button pressed until step 4 is finished. 3 Press ENTER. 4 Press number buttons (1 -9, 0) to enter the manufacturer’s code (2 digits).

Basic operations 15 On the remote contro l: Press one of the source selecting buttons (DVD, FM/AM, AUX or TV SOUND). DV D : T o play back a disc (D VD VIDEO, VCD etc.). ( A pg. 18) FM/AM : T o tune in an FM or AM (MW) station. ( A pg. 38) Each time you press the b utton, the band altern ates between FM and AM (MW).
Basic operations 16 The system turns of f automatically when the specified period of time has passed. Press SLEEP. Each time you press the button, the shut-of f time changes. Example: To check the remaining time Press SLEEP once. To change the remaining time Press SLEEP r epeatedly .
Basic operations 17 NOTE • When you change the positioning of the speakers or listener, or replace the supplied speakers with other ones, perform Smart Surround Setup again. 7 While DVD is selected as the source and stopped 1 Take your position where you listen to the sound.

Playback 20 7 Screen saver A TV screen may burn out if a stat ic picture is displayed for a long time. T o preve nt this, the system automatically dims the screen if a static picture is displayed for o v er 5 minutes (the s creen saver function). • Pressing any b utton will cancel the screen saver function.

Advanced operations 23 7 All Channel Stereo (DSP) All Channel Stereo (ALL CH ST .) mode can reproduce a larger stereo sound fi eld using all the c onnected (and acti vated) speak ers. All Channel Stereo can be used while reproducing 2 channel stereo source.

Advanced operations 25 Y ou can start playing a title, chapter or track you specify . Y ou can also play a disc from specif ied time. Locating a desired scene from the DVD menu D VD VIDEOs generally hav e their own menus which sho w disc contents and you can display them on the TV screen.
